sounds like its time to make keto gummie bears for this kid :-P

[–]kaisawheelF/27|5'7"|SW 266|GW 150| CW 224 23 points24 points ago

They might still not be safe for him to eat. The diets that epileptic kids are put on are vastly more restrictive than what /r/keto practices.

[–]callmesuspectSW: 240 CW: 195 GW: 170 1 point2 points ago

Yes, a doctor must be consulted, your kid's health is not worth his short-term happiness.

[–]honilee 49 points50 points ago

Sounds like a good idea, but depending on his age it may be best to wait until he's old enough to know that "these" gummies are safe to eat and "those" gummies are not.

[–]enforce1SW: 275 / CW: 181 / GW: 175 19 points20 points ago

Perfectly valid point. I don't recommend artificial sweeteners, just feel bad for the kid.

[–]sirberus 3 points4 points ago

He's 8.

[–]trojanguyM 6'0" SW:204 CW:171 GW:175 2 points3 points ago

Seriously! I bet the kid would love it!

I'm going to fly blind, without verifying, but...

i bet that search string will yield your results.

[–]zeertOne year of keto. Need moar veggies in my life. 0 points1 point ago

Why not pork rinds? Those are like candy!

[–]SeptVentiDue 62 points63 points ago

What impressed me most is he gave you the toy instead of expecting you to find an alternative.

[–]RockDrill 5 points6 points ago

I would probably go out and buy some more toys for the kid just to repay his dad's politeness.

[–]callmesuspectSW: 240 CW: 195 GW: 170 1 point2 points ago

I was about to get pissed at the dad, because I thought the letter was gonna turn into "please go out and buy this/that for him"

Glad it didn't.

[–]goddessummanda 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. I mean this was a kickass idea. Faith in humanity restored for the day

My best friend's daughter has one of the most severe forms of epilepsy and it has left her as a nearly three year old who is unable to communicate verbally and is just now taking her first steps. If it weren't for the ketogenic diet, she wouldn't be learning to walk at all. She went to a special Halloween event on the 30th for special needs children and walked to receive a small toy from Cinderella for the first time in her life. She hasn't had a seizure in 6 months since starting the ketogenic diet a year ago. She is now weaned off all medication and has surprised her doctors with her progress. She is likely never going to function entirely normally due to developmental delays, but she may be able to live more independently than ever expected.

[–]cletustheslackjawed 4 points5 points ago

Truly amazing thing to hear. Taking serious medications from a young age is so very dangerous. I'm glad that the keto diet works for these poor kids and hopefully gives them a chance at life.

[–]FlintGreasewood 7 points8 points ago

It is highly controversial to put young children on such a restrictive diet, and it took my friend ages for her doctors to agree to try it. She thinks it was when they could no longer increase her dosages of medications yet her seizures weren't getting any better that convinced her neurological team to try something drastic. There was literally nothing to lose because she was going to die if the seizures didn't ease up. She had to have frequent blood work, and that is traumatic for a young child. She is a brave, miraculous little girl.

[–]DrStalkerSW:127kg|CW:119kg|2 weeks 6 points7 points ago

I thought the keto diet was well established as helping childhood epilepsy (as far as I know that is where it started, with adult use for weight loss being an "off label" use")

Well done to your friend for pushing through and sorting this out for her child, she has literally given her child a life.

[–]FlintGreasewood 5 points6 points ago

It is controversial, from what I was told, because children can fail to thrive due to the restrictive nature. Doctors tend to want to use first line antiseizure medications first. They have to be very closely monitored to make sure they don't miss out on vital nutrition or lose weight. There have been a few times my friend's daughter lost weight despite following the exact diet her nutritionist made for her that month. Each month her nutritionist makes up a menu with exact proportions of what she needs to eat each day to get what she needs to grow. It is so restrictive that there are lotions and body products she can't use because of glycerine content that could be absorbed.

[–]mason55 0 points1 point ago

Taking serious medications from a young age is so very dangerous

Huh?

[–]Jer_b 1 point2 points ago

Not only are benzodiazapines nephrotoxic but they're also highly addictive, not great for developing children. I'm too lazy to find peer reviewed sources but a quick glance at wikipedia yields this:

The safety and effectiveness of lorazepam is not well determined in children under 18 years of age, but it is used to treat acute seizures. Dose requirements have to be individualized, especially in the elderly and debilitated patients in whom the risk of oversedation is greater. Long-term therapy may lead to cognitive deficits, especially in the elderly

With long-term use of benzodiazepines, it is unclear whether cognitive impairments fully return to normal after cessation of therapy; cognitive deficits persist for at least six months after withdrawal, but longer than six months may be required for recovery of cognitive function. Lorazepam appears to have more profound adverse effects on memory than other benzodiazepines; it impairs both explicit and implicit memory.[42][43] In the elderly, falls may occur as a result of benzodiazepines. Adverse effects are more common in the elderly, and they appear at lower doses than in younger patients. Benzodiazepines can cause or worsen depression.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorazepam

I wouldnt want my kid on it. Young children's liver and kidney are still growing causing them to be even more susceptible to some of the toxic side effects of many medications.

[–]mason55 2 points3 points ago

Sure I totally agree that there are tons of medicines that kids shouldn't be on. But saying

Taking serious medications from a young age is so very dangerous

Is a scary attitude. There are plenty of medications that children can take from the day they are born.

[–]anderungen 1 point2 points ago

please do not sensationalize a class of medications that has been used, safely, for decades now, as toxic and scary. there are people out there who rely on benzodiazpines to live their lives. having addictive properties doesn't preclude a vast array of therapeutic indications.
that being said i do agree administering most any pharmaceutical to anyone still developing should be vigilantly questioned, particularly the psychiatric drugs.

[–]Jer_b 0 points1 point ago

You're right, when used in the correct circumstance Benzo's have a therapeutic effect in many different scenarios. Thats why both they, and their precursor barbiturates, have been around for ages and are included in the WHO's "essential medications" list.

That being said they are currently schedule IV and III according to the FDA due to the high susceptibility for abuse/addiction. In addiction, they interact with many other drugs due to their use of the cytochrome P450 pathway. This is compounded with children due to their immature liver /kidneys which are unable to excrete the medication and its metabolites in the same capacity as we would.

A commenter in the other thread has a little brother on keto for treating epilepsy. He said they have to watch which suncreen he uses.

A quick google search later, and yes, is a valid concern.

Other important instructions for children on the diet:

  • The child should not receive any intravenous fluids that contain dextrose.
  • The child should not receive any tooth swabs, syrups or suspension.
  • We must know the carbohydrate content of all toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen and other topical lotions the child uses.

There are carbohydrates in toothpaste, deodorant, and sunscreen?

[–]ggggbabybabybabymicroing my macro 24 points25 points ago

Toothpaste I'm not surprised by but deodorant and sunscreen are new to me. I guess I should stop drinking this stuff.

[–]Jer_b 1 point2 points ago

I would have never thought of checking the carb count in toothpaste!

[–]3DPDDFCFAG 0 points1 point ago

I would guess those are sugar alcohols which tecnically are carbs even though most people don't metabolize them. But they do spike blood sugar afaik.

[–]anderungen 2 points3 points ago

I think the ability of the skin to absorb a whole lot of stuff is often neglected by everyone in general. definitely some food for thought!

[–]jax9999 0 points1 point ago

huh this might explain how i got fat. love me some deoderant.

[–]elfonzi 0 points1 point ago

Alcohol I believe in deodorant and sunscreen to help it evaporate.

[–]FlintGreasewood 3 points4 points ago

I noted that my friend's daughter can't use certain body products, too. Keto for epilepsy is serious stuff. In the case of my friend's daughter, it has literally saved her life.

[–]dubbya 22 points23 points ago

I comb the internet in my off time looking for proof that I'm still normal because certain mental illnesses that have an effect on emotional responses run in my family. I ask myself, "does this art move me? Do I still feel a thrill from exciting videos? Do I still long for my younger years when I see photos of kids having fun in a park?"

This letter is the first solid and instant emotional response I've had in a long time while doing this. I had to ask myself nothing and merely almost began crying in the parking lot of CVS.

If you are reading this, dad who did this for your son, well done and thank you.

Dear Neighbour,

I live in Discovery Ridge. My son Fletcher is 8 years old and will be dressed as an Angry Bird for Halloween (a character from the video game). Fletcher has a very severe form of Epilepsy. In order to treat his Epilepsy and prevent more seizures, Fletcher must maintain a medical diet called the Ketogenic Diet. The diet is very strict and excludes many foods, including every type of candy.

Obviously, Halloween would be a difficult holiday for him as all of his friends are trick or treating and getting all sorts of candy. He is very excited and simply can't wait for Halloween to arrive. We want fletcher to participate in as many events as he can. Therefore, we have purchased a number of small toys to give to Fletcher on Halloween instead of candy. One of these toys is attached to this letter. We are asking that when Fletcher comes to your door on Halloween evening, instead of giving him candy, please give him this small gift (he will be with me and he will introduce himself as "Fletcher")

Thank you so much for helping us making Halloween a very special day for Fletcher.

Yours truly,

Allan Fletcher's Dad

We have a similar situation in our neighbourhood with a kid on a keto diet. On top of providing each of the neighbours with a special treat bag for their kid, these parents also made the most kick-ass traffic light costume for the kid. Some parents are just too awesome :)

Truly... dad of the year! Way to go, Allan!

[–]Mutjny 2 points3 points ago

Give him delicious beef jerky in his candy bag!

[–]pilsung 4 points5 points ago

I took Neurontin, Lamictal, Depakote, and Keppra at different times to control seizure activity brought on by an inoperable brain cyst. What those meds did to me, I wouldn't wish on the worst of my enemies. It breaks my heart that anyone, especially children should ever go through this. For me, greatly increased activity has been a life saver, as well as diet change. Interesting, none of my doctors ever mentioned the Keto diet. I shall now look into it to control some of my more sinister and lingering symptoms. Thank you, REDDIT!

[–]actuallychrisgillen 4 points5 points ago

First of all that is a super awesome dad. Good for him,

I would encourage all people who give out candy for Halloween to include a non candy option as well. So many allergies and for the really young kids candy/nuts simply aren't an option. For my family we hand out invidual play doh packets. Huge hit with the under 6 set.

[–]tittyfister69 3 points4 points ago

It's kind of funny, most people would see his diet as a negative. Having been on keto looking back I wish I was put on a ketogenic diet as a child.

This is so sweet. We used to have a neighbor with two sons, one with autism, both with numerous allergies. They left a similar note one year with a bag of special treats for us to give them. My kids and I went out and bought them a few small toys and gadgets and made them each a toy goodie bag in addition to the treat bag the parents dropped off. Every year till we moved out of that neighborhood we'd make special bags just for the two of them. My kids loved picking out fun things that they thought each kid would enjoy. The mom told me they looked forward to our house the most every year. :)
