In Houston after Ike, the houses on my side of the street got power back a week and a half before the houses across from us. There were about 3 extension cords coming out of every house on my side to the houses on the other side.

[–]TheWhiteNashorn 185 points186 points ago

Same in my neighborhood in VA after Isabel, those of use who didn't have power or generators got super extension cords for our fridges for 2 weeks.

[–]youngeric86 171 points172 points ago

In houston after IKE the local borders, off of Kirby, had every table and chair moved near an out let with 2 or 3 surge protectors. The place was packed with people charging phone and using laptops to do work on their free wifi. I never shopped there much before but after that I got every single book from that location.

[–]hobbers 143 points144 points ago

And now Borders is out of business. :(

[–]memeries 141 points142 points ago

Their electricity bill caused them to go bankrupt.

[–]SirAuron 10 points11 points ago

No. Most likely, since that guy bought every single book, they went out of business having no more books to sell.

[–]nyaaaa 54 points55 points ago

Not enough hurricanes to pull in customers :/

[–]ashishduh 17 points18 points ago

I remember after Ike all the grocery stores had set up big charging stations. I wasn't even looking for people doing this around my home because fuck if I was gonna sit at home in Houston humidity with no A/C anyway.

[–]MrFlagg 55 points56 points ago

In Quebec after the ice storms the local utility workers had their union blockade the utility workers from other provinces that were coming in to help.

[–]ShaunathinShavis 161 points162 points ago

Aaaand that's why nobody likes Quebec

[–]beaverteeth92 44 points45 points ago

They're almost as bad as the actual French.

[–]nagas 5 points6 points ago

Most residential electricity panels are designed for a 200 amp max, which is plenty for a house... but if you get too crazy powering other houses you're gonna have problems. Gotta be careful doing this. At the very least you would find yourself tripping breakers constantly.

[–]jiggypfiewah 53 points54 points ago

You could've seen that on my block until this morning.

I had two 100ft extension cords running to two of my neighbors houses since I had power and they didn't.

I'm hoping that maybe they'll realize that even though I've got Obama stickers on my Prius and my Volt and they've got Romney stickers on their trucks, that I'm not in fact the devil, but rather I'm a totally reasonable guy.

Maybe that's too much to ask, but a guy can dream!

[–]Zagrobelny 48 points49 points ago

You should have charged them. Free electricity is just socialism.

[–]eyecite 2564 points2565 points ago

Then when people turn around, you draw up the cord into your window. I call it phone fishing and it is very profitable.

[–]grant0 209 points210 points ago

These people don't need the money. That's a $700 stroller.

Source: I am a stroller salesperson.

[–]eyecite 105 points106 points ago

That's about as much as one of the phones.

Source: I am now a phone salesman.

[–]grant0 108 points109 points ago

People who choose to spend $700 on strollers and live in houses with gates like that do not generally also steal phones.

Source: I am a gate salesman.

[–]eyecite 59 points60 points ago

How do you think I afford the stroller and gates?

[–]Bunnyhat 22 points23 points ago

I make a good living stealing peoples expensive strollers and gates.

[–]eyecite 6 points7 points ago

Game recognize game.

[–]derpdeederpa 21 points22 points ago

People have gates

Source: I am a gate

AMA Stroller Salesperson

[–]zipzap21 4 points5 points ago

Stroller Salesperson: You love your baby more than anything in the world, right? Then it's settled, you'll get the Vista Stroller 9000. Will it be check or charge?

[–]jbenz 1074 points1075 points ago

I call it phone phishing, but that's only because I think I'm more clever than I actually am.

[–]skmfl 798 points799 points ago

I call it phishing because it uses parts from both phone and fishing, effectively making me think I'm the most clever person on reddit.

[–]DoWhile 427 points428 points ago

I call it phoning because it uses parts from both phone and fishing, effectively making me think I'm cleverer than the most clever person on reddit.

[–]Provenzer0 617 points618 points ago

Y'all have ridden this horse to the end of the line.

[–]el_pinata 445 points446 points ago

Good news: it can still be beaten, post-death!

[–]IronDiggy 105 points106 points ago

Still waiting for the [fixed]

[–]Aeneis 5 points6 points ago

Quick it's a squirrel! Photoshop it white!

[–]ViscountShiningWit 21 points22 points ago

Nice relevant username!

[–]paulethegreat 61 points62 points ago

I am not a clever man.

[–]swiftb3 9 points10 points ago

Well, I call it-- ...ah, nevermind...

[–]firstpageguy 62 points63 points ago

Since phoning and phishing already have other meanings, it's called phonshing, effectively making me think I'm even more clevererer than those who think they're cleverer than those who think they are even cleverer than those who think they are the most clever on reddit.

[–]OsamaMKH 8 points9 points ago

You're clever to us Jonathan, you're clever to us.

[–]ru552 12 points13 points ago

I expecting this to turn into a conversation about phone phreaking. I r dissapoint

[–]TarBarrel 6 points7 points ago

People here are to young to remember phreaking.

[–]iq_32 7 points8 points ago

this term has been around since the 80s or so. it's old school hacking/social engineering.

phone phreaking too

[–]GoReadEmersonAgain 4 points5 points ago

phone phishing , brings me back to AOL days

blue boxes and all

[–]Achalemoipas 397 points398 points ago

I've seen someone do this with a big pile of logs once during winter.

There was a sign in front of the pile of logs that basically said they had too much wood and that it was free and that you could take it.

Then the real owners showed up and called the cops because people stole their logs. Turned out the neighbor was tired of seeing that pile of logs there.

[–]bat-fink 981 points982 points ago

how is that in any way the same?

[–]ObiWanBonogi 1561 points1562 points ago

There was a thing and people.

[–]IAmA_Black_Guy_AMA 406 points407 points ago

And it happened on earth.

[–]wipedingold 215 points216 points ago

Did you steal the logs?

I'm so sorry, I couldn't resist.

[–]jbenz 112 points113 points ago

It's not stealing if there was a sign saying "free wood", you silly racist.

[–]wodahSShadow 107 points108 points ago

No one grabs my wood

sigh

[–]wratx 66 points67 points ago

Put a sign on it

[–]thedrivingcat 34 points35 points ago

"Too much wood? " Yeah, I get that all the time.

[–]supnel 63 points64 points ago

[–]SloshyBro 36 points37 points ago

LOL It never gets old.

That kid is going to be soooooo pissed in a few more years.

[–]CockbeardedNeck69 31 points32 points ago

This gif is so old, the kid is like 27 by now

[–]irish711 28 points29 points ago

And he's a redditor by the name of IAmA_Black_Guy_AMA.

[–]eaglesguy96 18 points19 points ago

Don't forget that it was at a place and at a time as well.

[–]peon47 21 points22 points ago

It's not, but it's funnier. :D

[–]ianmgull 16 points17 points ago

[–]RuffDesperado[S] 1074 points1075 points ago

Credit goes to random person on my newsfeed!

[–]Kit_L 1264 points1265 points ago

It's been a while since college, is that the MLA or APA citation format?

[–]RuffDesperado[S] 1353 points1354 points ago

reddit citation format.

[–]Texas_ 791 points792 points ago

I thought reddit citation format was to repost and take credit.

[–]jortr0n 363 points364 points ago

That's OIaF format.

[–]malcolmreynolds1989 246 points247 points ago

I read this, and was like "I don't know what that stands for, but this guy would have gotten a ton of karma if he said OP is a faggot." and then I realized that I am, in fact, a derp.

[–]WASDx 91 points92 points ago

I thought it said "olaf" which I'm sure someone in Skyrim is named.

[–]DrMandible 55 points56 points ago

There's also Olaf of Lokfar (of League of Legends renown.)

[–]Anonyberry 25 points26 points ago

Count Olaf.

[–]iDiedYesterday 71 points72 points ago

OPiaF*

Edit: Lowercase 'i'

[–]canhazhotness 94 points95 points ago

MLA in text would probably look like (Person) - this is assuming the person's full name is 'Random Person', where the full citation would include the date of the post, and the location. Perhaps a variation of:

Person, R. Facebook Newsfeed 2012

I don't feel like doing APA. APA is bullshit. ಠ_ಠ

[–]JustZisGuy 116 points117 points ago

You have been banned from /r/MLAformat

[–]Machinax 68 points69 points ago

AH GOD IT ACTUALLY EXISTS

[–]martinw89 14 points15 points ago

IEEE transaction format bitches. Bitches love when I use square brackets and shit.[1]

[1]This is true.

[–]FlyingPasta 22 points23 points ago

I only hate APA because EasyBib doesn't do it.

[–]DrBubbles 19 points20 points ago

I have the same picture on my newsfeed. Hello person I probably know.

[–]darad0 9 points10 points ago

I think we might have the same real life friend.... oO

[–]cannman11 126 points127 points ago

This is in Hoboken, NJ. I charged my phone at this exact location yesterday. there are a few blocks with power and every resident has laid out power cords for people to charge their phones. Restaurants were also giving out free food to any residents who needed. Truly a great display of human kindness

[–]bdams19 9 points10 points ago

My friend is one of the people who is sharing electricity (among other things). I lived in boken for 4 years and it is always flooding during heavy rain so I knew this was going to be bad news. I can't believe how many people ignored the mandatory evacuation order though =/

[–]IrishGh0st91 345 points346 points ago

Is that Hoboken? My uncle used to live in an apartment in Hoboken that has gates just like those.

[–]RuffDesperado[S] 235 points236 points ago

yes it is!

[–]IrishGh0st91 123 points124 points ago

Ha! Awesome! I've definitely walked down that street before. Is there a park across from it?

[–]LeopoldTheLlama 336 points337 points ago

...I am mildly weirded out that you can pinpoint a house to a specific street based on the style of gate in front of the house

[–]IrishGh0st91 119 points120 points ago

Yeah, this is starting to get weird. I'll bail out now. Only reason is because I spent a lot of time in Hoboken.

[–]Reddit-Hivemind 109 points110 points ago

dont bail out! I feel a nowkiss.jpg coming

[–]bamfsalad 54 points55 points ago

Nowkiss.jpg

[–]Dramatic_Sans 69 points70 points ago

Aww man, you blew it! Way too soon!

[–]bamfsalad 137 points138 points ago

Story of my life :(

[–]baconisforwork 38 points39 points ago

There's only 2 blocks in Hoboken with power, so it's not as much of a shot in the dark as you might think

[–]I_AM_Achilles 122 points123 points ago

Only 1 block ever since the hurricane.

[–]JPong 16 points17 points ago

Well, shooting in the dark would be kind of pointless. They have power! You should be shooting at the lights.

[–]MidgetAbilities 6 points7 points ago

He can't. At least 50% of Hoboken apartments have a gate just like that out front.

[–]Genmaken 49 points50 points ago

Now it's just called Ken. Sandy washed all the hobos away :'(

[–]okcrazypants 422 points423 points ago

That's fucking awesome, I love friendly neighbors.

[–]Timibumatay 561 points562 points ago

Then you'll love State Farm.

[–]wickedweather 120 points121 points ago

I always thought State Farm was like a Good neighbor, not a friendly one. :-)

[–]zoidy-1 105 points106 points ago

good fences make good neighbors

[–]wallychamp 176 points177 points ago

Like a good neighbor, State Farm's a fence?

[–]jbenz 27 points28 points ago

This checks out, people. By the law of the transitive property, State Farm is a fence....

A fence that protects your property! Even the transitive ones! Wait oh god my mind is melt-

[–]danweber 19 points20 points ago

Friendly neighborhoods are where Spider-Mans live.

[–]Somnioblivio 57 points58 points ago

[–]GifsNeedSound 13 points14 points ago

this gif. fuck did I laugh.

[–]Norse_of_60 10 points11 points ago

What are you wearing 'Jake' from 'State Farm'?

[–]Fluhearttea 4 points5 points ago

Nice try, State Farm agent.

[–]cojafoji 175 points176 points ago

It saddens me to have to say this, but a lot of people from New Jersey, especially in the south and what remains of their farming areas are really, really, really nice.

[–]scaevola 75 points76 points ago

You and me both. I lived in New York and MA and every time I would go to NJ the people were great! I really doubt the people who disparage NJ have spent any length of time there and are more reacting to a cultural stereotype.

[–]Dinewiz 65 points66 points ago

Jersey Shore did them no favours, no doubt.

[–]03Titanium 19 points20 points ago

Comedy central also does no favors for them.

[–]cocoria 38 points39 points ago

My experience with NJ is that the people are much nicer than the stereotype, but driving in NJ is even worse than the stereotypes. They're almost Asian-level aggressive when behind the wheel.

[–]Weedwacker 31 points32 points ago

I'm a New Jersey driver and I can vouch for this. Aggressive driving is the only driving, if you're out of state don't use the left lane in NJ because guaranteed we're all trying to go faster than you just because you're out of state.

[–]stealthismatt 8 points9 points ago

Fuckin' Camden...

[–]baconisforwork 21 points22 points ago

This would be Hoboken - the northwest and extremely urban area.

People are nice all over :)

[–]MundoChemicalRomance 253 points254 points ago

Meanwhile, there's the jerk with the iPad charger, who is totally going to take up two sockets if he doesn't get a bottom one, because he didn't bring his easymode extension.

[–]mrbooze 62 points63 points ago

If I threw out something like this I would include several of these already plugged in. (I have a couple sacks of them in a drawer. They are the best invention in history until someone stops making those goddam wall warts.)

[–]linlorienelen 58 points59 points ago

[–]scuba617 89 points90 points ago

I've been playing with the squid in the logo on that page for the better part of 5 minutes. That logo has no business being that fun.

[–]wordtoyourmuthaship 9 points10 points ago

Yesssss...at only $1.15 or less, these are a good alternative to a PowerSquid. Plus they still work well even if you only need the two plugs a typical outlet provides.

[–]mrbooze 7 points8 points ago

Upvote for linking through monoprice, the god of cable suppliers.

[–]flargoo 36 points37 points ago

charging anything other than a phone is a shitty thing to do. Phones have a purpose in an emergency, which is the only reason one should take advantage of this hospitality. No excuses for a tablet with a cell chip in it either. If you have one of those, you have a cell phone.

[–]kyuubi42 61 points62 points ago

There's a good chance that they're using the iPad charger to charge an iPhone, it works and charges the phone way faster.

[–]wordtoyourmuthaship 33 points34 points ago

Yeah, because everyone charging a phone there is going to use it strictly for emergency-related communication. /s

I partly agree with you on principle, but in reality someone taking advantage of this to charge a tablet is probably no worse than most of the rest of the people using it to charge a phone. Besides, who's to say they aren't going to use their tablet to Skype or IM to stay in contact with friends or relatives?

An interesting point, sir/madam, but I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree.

[–]Tyler2191 149 points150 points ago

Holy sh*t! That's my fiance's cousin's house. Yeah they were so generous. I live in Hoboken at 1st and Clinton and they put a sign on the windows saying "Charging Station" and put the extension cords outside. Even cooked food for people and left hot coffee outside for everyone. Such great people. I know it's their house because of the black strollers in the background. Was taken on 11th street.

[–]clarkster 40 points41 points ago

Do you both know each other?

[–]YourACoolGuy 20 points21 points ago

Whenever I see posts like this, I always assume they immediately check each others post history to see their 'internet' version of someone they know.

[–]thefray777 6 points7 points ago

when I found out my brother's username because of something he said in a comment... i decided i dare not see what he's been commenting on... didn't want to be mind scarred...

[–]tsteward1 9 points10 points ago

Just tell all of reddit where your fiance's cousins house is!! I'm sure they will love you for it!!!

[–]triscuit312 17 points18 points ago

Yo take down the personal info!.... and just so you know, I wouldn't want to live at 1st and Clinton. That area's sketchy.

[–]PortixArsenal 26 points27 points ago

Wait till it rains

[–]wasting_internet 27 points28 points ago

buzzkill

[–]zaquanimus 22 points23 points ago

[–]Wonkybritches 113 points114 points ago

As someone who takes calls for jcpl we do not know when power will be restored but threatening my family won't make the people in the field work faster

[–]banggarang 37 points38 points ago

[–]chaoticbuddhist 345 points346 points ago

This is what I'm talking about. We all need to help each other. This world is entirely too big to try and do it all on your own. This really made my day.

[–]raffaellog 31 points32 points ago

:_)

[–]BiggityBates 96 points97 points ago

It seems you've misplaced your nose, friend!

[–]throweraccount 51 points52 points ago

No worries, that's just his pillow. He's in the hospital getting ready for his nose transplant, they can do that nowadays.

[–]B_S_O_D 17 points18 points ago

:^)

Now it's better!

[–]oracular_spectacular 446 points447 points ago

FUCK NO EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF ROMNEY 2012

[–]matt01ss 169 points170 points ago

[–]Aviator8989 11 points12 points ago

I'd hold onto this one. May come in handy in a few years

[–]Lionhearted09 67 points68 points ago

Yes because all Romney supporters don't think we should help one another out

[–]ColoradoAmendment64 153 points154 points ago

I actually heard Mitt Romney say, "Fuck that one guy who's letting other people charge their phones."

[–]T-Luv 72 points73 points ago

I heard he went there on his private jet, landed it in the middle of the street and cut the power cables with wire cutters and as he got back on his jet he said "See you in hell, suckers!"

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 7 points8 points ago

I read that on /r/politics too!

[–]howl777 34 points35 points ago

I know. Jesus Christ, lay off Reddit. We love to help people here on the right. I personally help at least 52% of the people I interact with, maybe even 53%.

[–]rosyatrandom 1028 points1029 points ago

But by providing this service for others, he's denying them the opportunity to create a solution for themselves and thus enrich their lives. What a douche!

[–]Agodoga 455 points456 points ago

He is preventing free-market solutions! Behead those who insult the profit!

[–]rocketcraft 807 points808 points ago

He is charging them.

[–]eyeballTickler 148 points149 points ago

This might be one of the most 1.) bearable and 2.) underrated pun sequences in a while. Upvote.

[–]gzilla57 21 points22 points ago

thank you for pointing out the pun, I wouldn't have noticed :)

[–]Flurven 34 points35 points ago

Underrated? It's 30 minutes old, and nobody has rated it.

[–]Le_This_FTFY 28 points29 points ago

30 minutes on Reddit is like 2 years elsewhere.

[–]participating 6 points7 points ago

I closed the tab just as I read this. Took my brain a second to see what you did there. Had to re-open the tab to give you the upvote you deserve.

[–]potodds 9 points10 points ago

Nah, he is just hooking them up.

[–]eyecite 51 points52 points ago

Yeah, just write a letter to mom and tell her you're okay!

[–]TBradley 23 points24 points ago

Or for private companies to swoop in and offer $5 phone charge sessions. This person must be an American hating socialist.

[–]ajleece 4 points5 points ago

That's like saying "How dare he set up a massage parlour! He's denying people the opportunity to massage themselves!"

[–]sw2de3fr4gt 216 points217 points ago

Why not just do this?

[–]f3renz 76 points77 points ago

I'm embarrassed by how much this made me laugh

[–]cryptonitt 52 points53 points ago

The scary thing is that it looks like the power button is glowing. :O

[–]scoops22 64 points65 points ago

It's because it was plugged in the wall then he quickly pulled it out of the outlets and plugged it into the power bar. The electricity is looping and as long as he doesn't plug in any other appliances it should go on forever.

I'm a scientist by the way so I know this for sure.

[–]cheerbearsmiles 16 points17 points ago

If I didn't live in an apartment complex where everyone has power, I would totally do this. I wish there were a way for me to bottle my heat and hot water for my friends who have none :( I've told people they're welcome to come over for showers, internet, food, and kitty interaction, but no one's taken me up on the offer.

[–]rallets 26 points27 points ago

It was the cameras in the shower and you staring at me thru the bushes that put me off.

[–]tobsn 11 points12 points ago

the kitty interaction might sound creepy :P

[–]JavaGurl 16 points17 points ago

Its all good til someone wheels over their fridge.

[–]RemainingAnonymoose 61 points62 points ago

That's my older brother's house!

[–]rocketcraft 52 points53 points ago

I live near there. I'll send you a creepy PM soliciting a sexual favor.

[–]jblo 21 points22 points ago

moose sex is illegal in NJ.

[–]CodeOfKonami 48 points49 points ago

Not if it's anonymoose.

[–]clarkster 15 points16 points ago

Do you both know each other?

[–]Tyler2191 16 points17 points ago

No clue. The male side of that family living in the house is related by marriage. No idea about his side of the family, I only really know her. So weird though. I know it's their place because of the black stroller. I was there last night when this was happening and remember looking outside at them. In any event -- small world.

[–]P_Charming 18 points19 points ago

Is your older brother doing this? Tell him I said he's nice.

[–]rtmn 11 points12 points ago

So ... I bet he is using the plug of the neighbor he doesn't like :)

[–]mundt8111 21 points22 points ago

I'm sure this will get buried and no one will see it but I was one of the people who benefited from the generosity of these folks in Hoboken. Just want to say thank you so much for restoring my faith in humanity!!

[–]edgar_jomfru 28 points29 points ago

A reminder that many in NJ are still without power. Please, donate all the non-electronic porn you can.

But where will those people be when that guy gets his electricity bill?

[–]atheistjubu 44 points45 points ago

Thought about this. A phone charger draws about 500mA, say you're averaging 8 phones plugged in at a time over the course of 10 hours. That's an energy draw of:

.5A*120 V * 8 * 10hours = 17 MJ = 4.8 kwH

US average is 13.3 cents a kilowatt hour so you're looking at 64 cents of extra electric bill. In return you are enabling perhaps a hundred people to reassure loved ones, make rendezvous plans, start resuming their lives, and check reddit.

EDIT: Also, they're probably on a generator if they're the only ones on the block without power. In which case, it's a comparably trivial cost in diesel.

EDIT EDIT: Yeah, yeah...adjust by order of magnitude for voltage.

on the block with power*

Look at that greedy asshole getting ready to charge his iPad. The sign clearly said cellphones.

[–]vidyagames 4 points5 points ago

There looks like an iPad charger already plugged in too.

[–]code_makes_me_happy 7 points8 points ago

Ipad chargers can be used for Iphones because that way they charge way faster Source: Some comment in this thread that I'm too lazy to look up

JERSEY STRONG

[–]sir_fancypants 22 points23 points ago

That's awesome. Amazing how the worst in nature brings out the best in people.

[–]trokker 30 points31 points ago

Don't forget the worst. Looters like hurricanes :(

[–]deehan26 52 points53 points ago

Oh thank god Debbie made to this thread

[–]Strikerj94 13 points14 points ago

After the April 27th Tornadoes that ravaged the south last year, Looting during disasters is now a felony charge in Alabama. Not sure if New York has a law like this though.

[–]Dinewiz 24 points25 points ago

Isn't stealing other peoples shit already a felony?

[–]Strikerj94 11 points12 points ago

Stealing under normal circumstances is a Class-C Misdemeanor.

[–]weinerdudley 13 points14 points ago

See, us Jerseyans aren't that bad..

[–]ALAN_BEFORE_TIME 16 points17 points ago

Nice try, Snooki.

[–]arcanition 17 points18 points ago

Daisy-chaining power strips? Nooooo!

[–]Vew 19 points20 points ago

Each outlet is pulling an amp or less. They're safe.

[–]arcanition 16 points17 points ago

Ah, okay, just checking. I know daisy chaining power strips or extension cords can sometimes tear a hole in the space-time continuum.

I heard a story on the radio yesterday about some guy who was charging people $5 to charge their phone. He worked in a parking garage and had several cars running so the batteries wouldn't run down. Its nice to see that not everyone is like that guy.

Edit: They weren't his cars.

[–]iScreme 62 points63 points ago

and had several cars running

He wasn't doing it for free because cars burn up fuel. But $5 is a bit steep.

[–]TheBoxTalks 62 points63 points ago

If I understood him correctly, they weren't his cars.

[–]iScreme 63 points64 points ago

Now that's a crime.

[–]4chanpolspy 7 points8 points ago

I also listen to NPR and heard that story. The guy wasn't using his cars and also did not have permission from the parking deck owner, he's just an asshole employee.

[–]therealpersona 15 points16 points ago

heard dat shit on NPR

[–]afondul 5 points6 points ago

that is incredible

[–]zoeyloveslife 3 points4 points ago

Good job random home owner. You allow people to let their loved ones know that they are safe....and go on reddit. Nicely done
