Check out my exhaust pipe.

[–]silverscreemer 122 points123 points ago

NASA just broke up with me,

[–]esccccp 99 points100 points ago

I told them long distance relationships don't work out.

[–]wsgy1111 33 points34 points ago

What part of my chassis should I expose next?

[–]th1nker 15 points16 points ago

Feelin [R]eally lonely up here. Anyone wanna cam? (14 min delay)

Curiosity [R]over here. Little shy.

Call me baby!

[–]VonBrewskie 1 point2 points ago

That's what was missing. Yup. Now I can fap to it.

[–]yamehameha 0 points1 point ago

Curiosity is a slut

[–]Trinityofwar -1 points0 points ago

Because its bored and has nothing to do

You called?

[–]matthewperri 21 points22 points ago

Los locos kick your ass. Los locos kick your face. Los locos kick your balls INTO OUTER SPACE!

[–]drewcifer04 2 points3 points ago

This comment is the only reason I clicked through. Thank you.

redditor for 5 years.

Man you've been waiting a long time for this moment, haven't you?

[–]xinlo 2 points3 points ago

Alright, six steps, we've gone from a mars rover to a rousing chorus of the Village People.

[–]VonBrewskie 0 points1 point ago

I love Reddit for just this reason. Well, that and porn, but mostly how brilliant people can be on here. (Myself excluded.)

[–]Endyo 19 points20 points ago

Welp, that's pretty undeniable.

[–]skaboss4493 1 point2 points ago

I (gulp) deny. It's a convex image appearing on the mirror, meaning that human-like figure is more like an upward-opening cone figure, which is the arm holding the camera. But don't hold me to that

[–]RAGING__LONER 15 points16 points ago

WOW. You saw the same thing I did.

[–]Frankeh 8 points9 points ago

It has a tiny little cyborg driving it.. Wuuuutttt.

[–]jugalator 1 point2 points ago

[–]Staulphin 2 points3 points ago

How do you know his pants are blue? I call bullshit on your bullshit calling

[–]jerk_van_face 8 points9 points ago

That part was artistic interpretation. I don't even have proof he was wearing any pants

[–]jugalator 0 points1 point ago

You can tell he's serious about this, tying his shoelaces and all!

[–]VerneAsimov 0 points1 point ago

That man would be upside-down, then.

[–]therealpersona -1 points0 points ago

i don't get it

[–]snakeeye838 1 point2 points ago

He only has one eye and has a clear mask on. Get it right.

[–]mediocre_robot 1 point2 points ago

Don't people who takes self portraits need to be in bathing suits in the bathroom?

[–]Bennyboy1337 2 points3 points ago

Nice: except that guy would have to be standing on his head while taking the picture lol

[–]xatefroggg 2 points3 points ago

I posted your picture over in /r/photoshopbattles here

[–]wikidd 0 points1 point ago

Look at the reflection on the lens closely. It has a dome head and an eye on a stick.... It's a dalek!

[–]mastercylinder2 76 points77 points ago

There is a big black guy with wires attached to the back of his head in the lens. It's totally there, and I can't stop seeing it.

[–]gqtrees 22 points23 points ago

i too saw a black man

[–]escapist11 -5 points-4 points ago

Racist.

[–]lalop 5 points6 points ago

Holy fuck!

[–]Craptain 4 points5 points ago

There is definitely a black man in that lens, it seems our preconceived notion of martians was wrong. What are the implications?

[–]mastr_slik 0 points1 point ago

I was looking at it on my phone zoomed in, and when I got to the lense I freaked out

[–]t3hdemon 49 points50 points ago

[–]Iampossiblyatwork 18 points19 points ago

I saw a dalek.

[–]Fsmv 1 point2 points ago

I agree, it looks way more like a dalek than a guy. It doesn't even have a face.

[–]Saerain 0 points1 point ago

You don't see the big upswept eyes and evil grin?

[–]fuckshitwank -1 points0 points ago

Davros?

[–]NobblyNobody 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, a miniature Cyborg wearing a Gimp suit.

Of course.

[–]achshar 0 points1 point ago

The image is inverted. The sky is down. So rotate it and then you will see it looks like joint of some kind of cover of something.

[–]nmvzciehjfal 1 point2 points ago

Darkseid!

[–]Free_Brain_Removal 0 points1 point ago

I too saw a much more morbid version of Karan Sjet.

[–]jmoriarty 12 points13 points ago

Without any irony or sarcasm at all, I think this is just one of the most beautiful things.

Every screw, cable, dial, and edge was thought out and master crafted by professionals as at the top of their game as any artist who has ever walked. What that rover went through to get where it is, to look back on itself, and take a picture so packed with meaning about itself and this literally alien world upon which it rolls is just staggering in every way.

This is a beauty of form, of function, of achievement, and of grace. Stunning.

[–]LiquidDinnerTable 2 points3 points ago

When I look at the background and see that endless desert behind the rover, it always blows me away that it's not earth.

[–]dombili[S] 17 points18 points ago

[–]Audiovore 9 points10 points ago

[–]Logical_Primate 35 points36 points ago

Still hasn't sunk in for me that we have a robot the size of a Range Rover on Mars with a HD camera(s).

[–]baskandpurr 24 points25 points ago

Yeah, I can't get over how clear the pictures are. Pictures from other planets are supposed to be fuzzy and low resolution. How are people going to argue that a rock looks like a carving of a human face?

[–]maximalyst 11 points12 points ago

2015's gonna be a fun year.

[–]freakflagflies 1 point2 points ago

All kinds of good shipt coming up in the sky. December, 2013 is supposed to be a comet as bright as a full moon and May, 2014 is a possible meteor storm of at least 1000 per hour.

[–]uhmhi 0 points1 point ago

Also, Star Wars ep. 7

[–]baskandpurr 2 points3 points ago

Perfect example. Pluto is kind of brown-grey and out of focus.

Surely something is going to a better picture than that soon?

[–]OK_Eric 9 points10 points ago

There's a probe on the way to it, it's a long ass jouney though, it launched in 2006 and still has a few more years until it gets there on July 14, 2015. It's called New Horizons..

[–]williamthefloydian 11 points12 points ago

Poor little guy still thinks Pluto is a planet, too. :(

[–]option_i 0 points1 point ago

Look at that beautiful Martian day.: D

[–]mharveyyay 94 points95 points ago

Why does it have to make duck face?

[–]Atanvarno 19 points20 points ago

At least it wasn't taken in the bathroom.

[–]boscomandeux 18 points19 points ago

Or shared on Instagram

[–]Shappie 4 points5 points ago

Not enough tilt shift.

[–]brolix 14 points15 points ago

that's what you think

[–]crm7290 -2 points-1 points ago

The planets a barren wasteland. Bathrooms everywhere!

[–]wartornhero 3 points4 points ago

I was hoping to see it cheek to cheek with Opportunity!

[–]TheEngine 6 points7 points ago

Can anyone conjecture on why the Martian soil is sticking to the treads? There's a distinct lack of wetness out there.

[–]maschnitz 3 points4 points ago

It's very very fine powdery stuff, like flour, and it's rust and volcanic glass. Very likely just static cling.

[–]neon_overload 5 points6 points ago

Curiosity is already getting a little dusty in places. Does she have any way of cleaning herself? Is the dust even going to be a problem? With Spirit and Opportunity it blocked their solar panels, but Curiosity doesn't need solar panels. Could it cause any other problems, like drying out and seizing up moving parts?

[–]new_math 1 point2 points ago

All the important sensors and cameras have covers that retract so dust doesn't accumulate on the actual lens or sensors. And the moving parts are all designed to work in the dusty environment.

[–]neon_overload 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure that they would have designed everything to work in a dusty environment, but I just am naturally curious (no pun intended) how they do it.

I'm guessing that if the lenses need to be covered to protect against dust, then they are vulnerable to dust while they are open, right? So there must be a mechanism to detect how much dust is being blown about and close the lenses if it's a certain amount?

The lubricants used would be a special type that won't dry out or become ineffective when dust gets in them I imagine, or are all joints and axles inside a sealed system (behind rubber boots/grommets) sealed to outside air?

[–]sameoldshit 8 points9 points ago

My God these comments are atrocious.

[–]nmvzciehjfal 10 points11 points ago

Someone has to repost this to /r/aww. It's adorable.

[–]doctorheredoctor 16 points17 points ago

These are the absolute worst comments I've ever seen on r/space. Be ashamed of yourself.

Why does it have to make duck face?

Self pic? Uhhhh oh. It's only a matter of time before it learns how to do a duck face.

No duck face?

Major duckface

I really expected to see 'duck face', then I realized this was /r/space.

It would look funnier with a duckface if it's a self shot

It's not a real self portrait until it does a duck face! At least that's what all the cool kids on myspace are doing.

What? no duckface?

Upvotes for no duck face

Funny that I don't see a duck face

Was expecting a duck face picture

Upvote for no duck face

At least it's not doing the duck face.

Finally, one without duck-face!!

What, no duck-face?

will we never see the end of the duck face?????

[–]NOACeulemans 8 points9 points ago

/r/space is becoming like any other /r/all subreddit. Out with the content, in with the memes, puns and lame jokes.

Bummer.

[–]doctorheredoctor 5 points6 points ago

50% increase in subscribers since August. Go figure.

[–]TITS_ON_MY_ASS 1 point2 points ago

Yep. Generally speaking, the overall quality of a subreddit is inversely proportional to the number of a subscribers it has.

[–]muckaduck 2 points3 points ago

That's a rather insightful comment coming from one with your username.

[–]option_i 1 point2 points ago

Dis b da bst sub yo.

[–]NotlimTheGreat 1 point2 points ago

There are times it can be successfully countered, much of /r/games is quality discussion until it hits /r/all(a tag shows when this happens so people know the top comments are probably going to be lower quality).

This post is one of those as well, I think it was in the top 20 very early on.

[–]freakflagflies 0 points1 point ago

The fact that all the above exists doesn't negate the decent comments. Take what you like and ignore the rest.

[–]Kurskovich 2 points3 points ago

It's a picture of the rover, what do you want people to talk about?

Seeing comments like this that cherry pick the worst comments on the post is one of the more annoying symptoms of a growing subreddit.

[–]LordNero 2 points3 points ago

This. It's these people that probably think that it's alright for Reddit to grow, but not in the subreddits they're already subscribed to.

[–]bds0688 2 points3 points ago

And you quoted them all for easy reading. Thanks!

[–]ungoogleable 4 points5 points ago

These are the absolute worst comments I've ever seen on r/space.

So you decided to collect them all in one place so more people would see them.

[–]Tiauguinho 4 points5 points ago

This is so awesome! Curiosity is such an achievement, would love to see more of these ventures in Space Exploration!

[–]My-Work-Reddit 6 points7 points ago

These images are absolutely amazing. I'm loving the cameras on this rover.

[–]JezusGhoti 2 points3 points ago

Is this legit? The only self-portrait I have seen is this one, which is decidedly lower resolution.

[–]new_math 0 points1 point ago

That's the raw images stitched together. The image posted is definitely legit, it's just been corrected to fix the bending and distortion.

[–]Sure_Enough 2 points3 points ago

Hot damn! As a kid, I would see the Millennium Falcon, with all its outer hull full of machinery bullshit & would think "that's not a sleek futuristic spaceship!" To me, the future was more like the Naboo Fighters.

But holy fuck! This rovers outer shell is FULL if its components!

So to whoever created and designed the Falcon... a future to past 2012 nod to you. ;)

[–]dearastronomer 2 points3 points ago

That would be famed Boeing illustrator Ralph McQuarrie

[–]Sure_Enough 0 points1 point ago

Nice! THX!

& I know that RM designed the sketches that would lead to studio approval & then storyboarding, but I figured that the Falcon's final details would've landed on some ILM's unsung hero's lap (the tall bearded dude with the glasses & flannel shirt).

;)

[–]jonwtc 2 points3 points ago

I've always loved anything related to space, but as i'm in medicine now, my mind rarely dwells on the great beyond. So whenever little pictures like this pops up in my day to day, it shakes something within me and a little smile spreads across my face. I don't know, maybe I'm just still in awe that our little friend here is (at least to me) incomprehensibly far away, another planet! Maybe I'm just giddy at the prospect of learning something extraordinary from this adventure.

[–]DorienG 2 points3 points ago

I wonder what the sand is like up there. Is it fine and squeaky like it is here in Pensacola, or is coarse like the sand near the Chesapeake. It'd be cool to walk up there barefoot...

[–]7h3C47 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't it be funny if in the future we visited another planet, or sent a rover to another planet, and found a different civilizations' scientific attempts to remotely explore it? Or if other intelligent forms ever come to mars and they're just like..."Whaaaaaaat are these doin' here..."

[–]d3jake 1 point2 points ago

That would be awesome: A desolate planet littered with rovers. We could scrub their solar panels and hit the restart button.

[–]andrewsmith1986 9 points10 points ago

[–]eyecite 0 points1 point ago

underrated

[–]andrewsmith1986 -2 points-1 points ago

The joke?

[–]eyecite -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah, imo.

[–]FrenchyDude 4 points5 points ago

1) Never thought the cables would be in the open, and not protected/hidden under the hull. 2) How did it take a self pic ?! 2 cameras ?

[–]pablogrb 19 points20 points ago

The rover has not two, but 17 cameras overall! This particular shot was taken with the MAHLI located in the rover arm and it shows 7 cameras on the mast: ChemCam, the two MastCams and 4 NavCams as seen here

[–]BernzSed 2 points3 points ago

The four "hazcams" in that picture are actually the navcams. The real hazcams are close to the bottom of the rover.

[–]pablogrb 2 points3 points ago

Damn, I mistyped on the image, thanks for the heads up.

[–]darkxc32 0 points1 point ago

So how did it take that picture?

[–]BernzSed 2 points3 points ago

[–]corpsmoderne 0 points1 point ago

Curiosity has lots of cameras, not only on its mast. I'm quite sure this one is taken from its robotic arm.

[–]rhombomere 2 points3 points ago

The cables are exposed because there is no reason that they can't be. Multiple years of Spirit and Opportunity having exposed cables have proved this. Besides, if you have them "inside" it affects the thermal story, volumetric issues, makes it harder to get access if they need re-work on Earth, etc.

[–]DelphFox 0 points1 point ago

Why not? It's like like it's going to rain, and running them outside leaves more space for equipment or other, more fragile cables.

[–]darkbridge 1 point2 points ago

The cables are exposed because NASA has strict standards in place, and they are built to last.

[–]commentsurfer 1 point2 points ago

I thought the same thing about the cables...

[–]reidzen 1 point2 points ago

If only the Curiosity lander had included a bathroom mirror...

[–]driveling 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't it make more sense to paint it black so that it would absorb more sunlight and stay warmer?

[–]NOACeulemans 0 points1 point ago

Why would it need to be warm?

[–]pooinmyloo 2 points3 points ago

It blows my tiny little mind every time I see one of these pictures. It's a robot that us little humans put on another planet, taking pictures, moving about and shooting x-rays at shit. Astonishing.

[–]flightsin 2 points3 points ago

I still cannot unsee the British guy chap with the monocle.

[–]muoncat 0 points1 point ago

We need a picture of Curiosity taking this picture.

[–]AD7863 1 point2 points ago

Mum, Dad, I wish you could see this.

[–]idrink211 1 point2 points ago

[–]ZorbaTHut 3 points4 points ago

Take it off!

Then put it back on before dust gets in!

[–]JavaPants -1 points0 points ago

Looks like Lore Sjöberg got his wish

[–]sameoldshit 2 points3 points ago

[–]Audiovore 1 point2 points ago

That's from the thumbnails. This one used the hires images.

[–]atomfullerene -1 points0 points ago

Just glue some cables on it and call it NASApunk

[–]thiss -1 points0 points ago

But who was camera?

[–]zombieriot -1 points0 points ago

Johnny-5 is alive!

[–]pomanE -1 points0 points ago

Curiosity killed the cat (check the tire treads).

[–]raygunc -1 points0 points ago

Goddamnit, it's aware. Great..

[–]Myschyf -1 points0 points ago

That can't be a self-portrait. I don't see a shower anywhere.

[–]cbarrett1989 0 points1 point ago

It still blows me away that everything in the background is fucking MARS. Why are we not there yet?

[–]diodex -1 points0 points ago

I can't stop seeing the black dude in there.

[–]mr_mason -1 points0 points ago

The lense reflection looks like a pissed of black guy...

[–]helter_skelter26 -1 points0 points ago

Selfie!!!!!!

[–]EmannuelMartinez -1 points0 points ago

"Does this angle make me look fat?"

[–]GnarlyNoober -1 points0 points ago

Johnny 5 is alive!!

[–]_Justice_Beaver -1 points0 points ago

Hard to tell if making a duck face

[–]capnbj -1 points0 points ago

At least it's not in a bathroom and doing the duck face.

[–]ohheythatguy -1 points0 points ago

There's a little black man in the top controlling the whole thing!!!

[–]dustinhossman 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else see this and think, "I really want to go there someday." I cant wait for the future. Lol.

[–]XXXBATSSKATERXXX 0 points1 point ago

Ahh i see the martians helped this little guy by providing a mirror for a nice picture!

[–]wooder32 1 point2 points ago

WALL-E

[–]oneangryrobot 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why you got downvoted, I think this rover has a lot of personality in its look and the first thing I thought of was Wall-E when I saw this picture.

[–]boiker 1 point2 points ago

After living in Phoenix, Mars doesn't look that alien to me anymore. It's desert like Arizona but with less plants.

[–]sprodigy 2 points3 points ago

Can anyone tell me what that black thing is - right above the ground on the left side (zoom in), its below the mountains. Dust on the lens?

[–]sirbruce 0 points1 point ago

Probably, or a pixel lost when this was stitched together. You can see another one above it in the sky.

[–]IncoherentVoidParrot 1 point2 points ago

Its characteristic of a dead pixel.

[–]farchewky 1 point2 points ago

How awesome is it that Curiosity is sending us pictures from another planet! It just sort overwhelmed me when I saw the mountains in the background that they weren't mountains on Earth. Amazing!

[–]taumeson 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, NASA -- why all the exposed wiring? I can think of two reasons: 1. weight at takeoff, and 2. it's better for heat in some fashion. Surely those are ludicrous reasons to leave it so unprotected to the elements!

[–]maschnitz 7 points8 points ago

Why so incredulous? I mean, it's JPL/NASA - gotta figure they know what they're doing, right? They're pretty smart. They've done this before.

Basically, because there are no real elements on Mars. The atmosphere is 1/100th as thick, the wind is fast but there's no weight behind it, and it's bone dry 99.99% of the time. Not much is happening. It's a pretty dead planet.

Besides, these are all shielded wires. And encasing them means just more weight, like you said.

[–]goodduck 0 points1 point ago

always wondered this as well.

[–]WesternZulu -1 points0 points ago

So. Fucking. Cool.

[–]BF3FAN1 -1 points0 points ago

What is that floating thing in the middle left background?

[–]vasquezsanchez 1 point2 points ago

what a beautiful piece of machinery!

[–]justwondrin -2 points-1 points ago

Holy shit guys, that thing is actually on Mars!

[–]imjusthereforthe -3 points-2 points ago

This is the beginning of the end. Soon, Curiosity will become self-aware and the rise of the machines will commence.

[–]rjnr -3 points-2 points ago

Anybody notice the minature dude in the control tower? I have questions.

[–]CubanMissileCrisis -3 points-2 points ago

Am I the only one that see's Johnny 5?!

[–]ManNomad 1 point2 points ago

no..but you are the only one not to see the best comment

[–]Terrasel -3 points-2 points ago

Is that biggie smalls inside the camera?

[–]biga415 -3 points-2 points ago

It looks like theres a pissed off black guy in the lens

[–]paraiahpapaya -3 points-2 points ago

Is it just me or does it look a little like there's an angry, bald black man with a collar and cane in the camera lens?

[–]colby_may -3 points-2 points ago

Is it just me or does it look like a mans reflection on the top part of the rover

[–]Woohoo-Cthulhu 0 points1 point ago

I have to continuously remind myself that these spectacular images are coming from another planet.

[–]bhig3 0 points1 point ago

Which one is the laser? :D
