This reminds me of an exchange that occurred between my father and a waiter at a cafe.

There's actually a fair amount of good shows on SBS, both past and currently shown. Insight, Iron Chef, Top Gear, Mythbusters, Entourage, Skins, Mad Men, the Aussie Wilfred, Summer Heights High, ANYTHING by John Safran...

A lot of good documentaries like Tyson, Jonestown, the Up Series... Consistently changing and always new.

They offer a lot of foreign films late at night when other channels are playing infomercials. A lot of them are good. They even have US cult film showings from time to time if subtitles aren't your thing. SOS or Shorts on Screen late at night is really cool for an hour of short films.

They also broadcast the World Cup and have a news program that isn't just stories focusing on how a kangaroo closed an Adelaide airport for half an hour.

I use the internet for television mostly but SBS is the best offering on free-to-air. I guess you could stick with things like shitty renovation shows, tired arse rehashes of Underbelly, Big Brother, ACA & TT, The Voice and The Shire, that's up to you. Or you could pay for Foxtel and spend 90% of your time watching ads when you can get that shit for free in twenty minutes with a torrent.
