Sally Mann. She is amazing. As a photography student she is one of my favorite photographers.

[–]starsspinningdizzy 22 points23 points ago

she manages to make pictures that are weird, somewhat disturbing, and beautiful at the same time. I love her.

[–]Deadlyseriousness 3 points4 points ago

Really similar to a lot of the photos Robert Frank from "The Americans"

[–]spaghettibug 1 point2 points ago

Hmm.. I feel Ms Mann's work has more dark undertones and Frank's work in The Americans isn't all about the "shock". But I can still see the resemblance! It's nice to know there are other cool photography appreciators on Reddit haha

[–]milque_toast 1 point2 points ago

I actually thought this was a Robert Frank piece.

[–]T-rexEyes 1 point2 points ago

would never be a Frank photo. His Subjects NEVER look into the camera. If you notice they are always looking just away or down or through the photographer. only his wife makes eye contact in the final images of "the americans"

[–]T_Jefferson 2 points3 points ago

NSFW, put a tag on that yo.

[–]raffytraffy 3 points4 points ago

yeah sorry, did it right after submitting.

[–]LegitimateSnape 0 points1 point ago

I actually saw one of those shots at the New Orleans Museum of Art several years ago, except all three were jumping and urinating at the same time. It was covered with a black cloth to censor it from young eyes, and had a title with something like "is this art?" Pretty interesting.

[–]niceguydammit 0 points1 point ago

check out Maplethorpe and Diane Arbus if you've not already.

[–]Fight4Light 2 points3 points ago

Same here. I loved researching her in my history of photography class.

[–]alexandra4rose 1 point2 points ago

I came here to say this... As a former photo student myself I became enamored with her series on her children.

[–]omnilynx 92 points93 points ago

It's the juxtaposition of innocence and maturity.

[–]headzoo 41 points42 points ago

Or the slow corruption of innocence.

[–]Brutalitarian 5 points6 points ago

And yet the eyes bring out your innocence when she looks at you.

[–]Kahnza 5 points6 points ago

They bring out something

[–]LevelFiveVegan 3 points4 points ago

You admit to getting sexually aroused by pictures of children?

Why don't you have a seat over there?

[–]Kdean509 1 point2 points ago

Hi, my name is Chris Hansen...

[–]MoT 3 points4 points ago

or just a child with a cigarette in their hand posing for a picture.

[–]Damnyoureyes 3 points4 points ago

It's a candy cigarette.

[–]andhelostthem 0 points1 point ago

My favorite part is I think she's wearing a Mickey Mouse watch.

[–]Gosuhax1 70 points71 points ago

"Is that a headless guy on stilts?"

"shut up i'm posing for an edgy photo"

[–]squirellandmoose4eva 16 points17 points ago

Its a frigin candy cigaret.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 11 points12 points ago

youre ruining it

"I picked the wrong week to quit."

[–]lowndest 4 points5 points ago

i picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue

[–]Anathema320 5 points6 points ago

The name of the picture is "Candy Cigarette" i somehow doubt that's a candy cigarette.

[–]Poseidon-SS -1 points0 points ago

Also, just look at it. It's sorta obvious it's a real cig or at least not a candy one.

[–]LegendofMaxine 27 points28 points ago

I was actually looking for Slender Man...

[–]waitee11 3 points4 points ago

See the kid in the left. He might not come back from the woods.

[–]dadanksauce 3 points4 points ago

I love this picture, thanks for sharing.

[–]mmmorgan 10 points11 points ago

For some reason I read that as potato instead of photo, was massively disappointed.

One of my favorites of all time. The phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" was meant for this. This is not "the best view of subject X", this is an introduction in mid-sentence to a thousand stories. And yes, the central figure is incredible in look, posture, and emotion, but so are the other two figures...

[–]tugrumpler 0 points1 point ago

this is an introduction in mid-sentence to a thousand stories

Beautifully described, this photo has exactly that effect on me every time I see it

[–]tassysurfer 1 point2 points ago

What's the context? It is an intriguing photo.

[–]Noradr00 11 points12 points ago

Sally Mann has used her 8 × 10 view camera to capture in fine detail, among other subjects, images of her children as they mimic and act out social and familial roles in the lush landscape of their rural Virginia home. For the series Immediate Family, posed or simply arrested in their activity, Mann’s children (who often appear nude) convey both primal and playful aspects of human behavior. The images in the series and subsequent publication At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women (1988) capture the confusing emotions and developing identities of adolescent girls. Candy Cigarette is a striking example of Mann’s distinctive combination of careful planning and serendipity. In this work Mann’s daughter Jessie suspends her activity and gracefully balances a candy cigarette in her hand, the innocent miniature of a blonde and gangling twenty-something beauty. Mann’s expressive printing style lends a dramatic and brooding mood to all of her images.

[–]Forblarion[S] 2 points3 points ago

Exactly, Wish I knew the context as well.

[–]Lingua_Franca2 10 points11 points ago

It's a photo called Candy Cigarette by Sally Mann. I posted it to /r/HumanPorn a few months back and it didn't really get much response. Glad to see this photograph getting publicity though!

[–]JalapenoCheese 5 points6 points ago

It's a pretty famous photograph, as far as art photography goes. Happy Cake Day!

[–]Allen-Smithee 2 points3 points ago

The BBC did an excellent documentary series on Photography that includes Sally Mann. The Genius of Photography (This was the only video I could find) The Sally Mann portion starts around 39 minutes in. I definitely recommend watching the whole series.

[–]Kdean509 0 points1 point ago

HBO did a special on her as well titled "What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann" in 2005. It was fantastic!

[–]seegrace 3 points4 points ago

Sally Mann! Those two little girls are actually her children. Incredible work done by her.

[–]dgarz 4 points5 points ago

I'm really eager to know what this picture is trying to say

[–]erryday_IAm_rustling 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure either, but the title is "Candy Cigarette". Maybe showing the idea of kids wanting to be grown up before they have to? Maybe it's purely to provoke a reaction, but I kinda doubt that.

[–]dgarz 1 point2 points ago

Well I googled the photo, and it apparently shows the 3 different perspectives in which the photo is taken. But I feel like the OP put it up because he saw something. Its bugging me!

[–]erryday_IAm_rustling 2 points3 points ago

Not sure what you're asking. Saw something like metaphorically or like a creepy face in the shadows?

[–]dgarz 0 points1 point ago

Well he says in the description he stared at it when he first saw it.

[–]erryday_IAm_rustling 9 points10 points ago

I think he was saying he was overcome by the image.

[–]abrykwall 0 points1 point ago

Well it looks like a kid was hanged, that's what I thought he didn't see at first.

[–]Noradr00 3 points4 points ago

This photograph is meant to me more of (a stretch of) documentary photography than conceptual photography. Durring her children's youth she would observe them playing/hanging out and ask them to reenact scenes that she saw, or she would make them pause in position while she ran to get her camera. This is probably the most analyzed of Sally Mann's photos, but her interest lied more in beauty of light and tone than in concept/meaning.

Her kids were often quoted saying than Mann was a photographer first and a mother second. Her kids are grown up now and she currently photographs mostly still lifes.

[–]cuffofizz 6 points7 points ago

It means whatever you want it to mean.

[–]Brutalitarian 24 points25 points ago

you just all the art

all of it

[–]greenw40 0 points1 point ago

So... nothing.

[–]NinjaGrandma 0 points1 point ago

You were probably trying to guess whether or not she was over eighteen.

[–]Otterfan 16 points17 points ago

That's Jessie Mann, Sally Mann's daughter.

She was born in 1981. The photograph was taken in 1989, so she is at most 8 years old.

[–]FlyLikeAMouse 11 points12 points ago

No way is she eighteen. I reckon fourteen at the most. She looks French to me, but that might just be because she has a cigarette.

[–]NinjaGrandma 0 points1 point ago

I was making a joke. I was calling you a pedophile. Now give me my downvotes.

[–]burnte 1 point2 points ago

They're the orange ones on top, right? I gave you two because I'm not a wuss who can't take a joke.

[–]username0899 1 point2 points ago

Haunting.

[–]rsmjr 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Perfect contrast, beauty, innocence and mistakes all at once. Brilliant!

[–]grandzooby 0 points1 point ago

I kept looking for a hidden smiling black man and was disappointed.

[–]21bender21 0 points1 point ago

Nah its a dude on stilts at a fair while a little girl eats a candy ciggarette

[–]jackman19 0 points1 point ago

that'd better not be a fake lynching.

[–]nathan1942 -1 points0 points ago

Is it the fucker on stilts?

[–]Forblarion[S] 0 points1 point ago

No, it's the beauty of the picture

[–]dead_badger 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't this in national geographic?

[–]SirFoxx 0 points1 point ago

Well, I think it's the fact you get to see SuperGirl there on the right.

[–]spencerman1 0 points1 point ago

Modern day Dorothea Lange photo

[–]JimmyNelson 0 points1 point ago

She looks like a young Emma Watson. am I the only one that sees that?

[–]StAlfonzo 0 points1 point ago

The child on stilts in the background is very creepy.

[–]atropinebase 0 points1 point ago

Retired beauty pageant contestant

[–]AiFormer 0 points1 point ago

When you saw what?

[–]Makaveli777 -1 points0 points ago

Maybe its because this witch and her friend just decided to hang daddy, steal his cigarettes, and make pretty pictures!

[–]Aloooon 1 point2 points ago

Low aperture. High depth of field.

[–]Red_snowman_17 0 points1 point ago

It's the floating man in the background

[–]andrew_canada 0 points1 point ago

That's actually a candy cigarette. Not many people realize that though.

[–]ticklesoda -1 points0 points ago

With an open end? I don't think so. Looks filterless.

[–]doyduhdoh 0 points1 point ago

Candy Gum Cigarrettes came in a paper tube with confectioners sugar you could blow 'smoke' out with.

[–]adarmatic -1 points0 points ago

It looks like she's mimicking her mother.

[–]Bipolarbear_au 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful photo but the kid on the left in the background is kinda creepy with his/her head cut off >.<

[–]pause_and_consider 1 point2 points ago

Kinda reminds me of the Virgin Suicides.

[–]Big_Oil 0 points1 point ago

her hand looks so old while the rest of her looks so young...almost like she's a 200 year old child vampire.

[–]Lerris911 0 points1 point ago

She has the classic thousand yard stare.

[–]buddhist32 -1 points0 points ago

Can someone put slenderman in the background?

[–]gravion17 -1 points0 points ago

Same thing...but I just kept coming back to it later as well. I just kept asking: "How OLD is she?" "Is she really smoking?" As far as the picture goes...I love it!

[–]tunit000 0 points1 point ago

I keep waiting for her to smile.

[–]IlliniOneSeven 0 points1 point ago

Sally Mann, great photographer, i like her series she did at the "body farm" of corpses

[–]speedkillsdj 0 points1 point ago

If I could upvote this more than once, I would.

[–]hctibreggin 0 points1 point ago

wow so many of my personal realizations in life are apparent in this photo. It's just unreal. I love a photo that creates a mood as strongly as this does.

[–]niceguydammit 0 points1 point ago

She'a bit jarring, but I like that.

[–]chaoticbuddhist 0 points1 point ago

Other than it's a beautiful shot, there is something about this obviously little girl engaged in a very adult act. I also see more pain in those eyes than a girl that young should have to deal with.

No wonder she needed a smoke.

[–]ojazer92 0 points1 point ago

did she just hang that guy?

[–]belfastphil 0 points1 point ago

Childhood lost.

[–]Ghastly_Toilet 0 points1 point ago

This is what photography is all about. Not black and white pictures of trees with the sun behind them. A good picture brings out feelings and juxtaposes your emotions. This girl is both a woman and a child, the look on her face suggests a lost innocence. The cigarette and stance make her look older while she and her surroundings clearly portray youth.

It's like looking at old photo's of yourself and realizing you haven't really changed

[–]castlebravo7 0 points1 point ago

Maybe it's the child with the cigarette, maybe it's the girl with the backwards head, maybe even the one who's just hung himself, I can't say for sure.

[–]w8forit 0 points1 point ago

The kid is on stilts.

[–]kerrybrower 0 points1 point ago

Why dies the little girls hand look like an old woman's?

[–]venev420 -2 points-1 points ago

i can only imagine the girl saying.. "And so i says to my daughter, jessi-anne, yer gunna make a great mother one day"

[–]biggestballz -4 points-3 points ago

It's because you're a pedophile and don't know it yet OP

[–]Pudding36 -2 points-1 points ago

who the fuck smokes parliments? Some one get this girl a real cigarette.

[–]kchriste -3 points-2 points ago

photoshop! look at the arms and hands. those are from a much older male subject.

[–]needsmoreocarina -3 points-2 points ago

[–]SamSamSamurai -5 points-4 points ago

Am I the only one that notices the kid on stilts in the background?

[–]gingertendencies 12 points13 points ago

No.

[–]ashlifires 1 point2 points ago

I saw that too then got really creeped out...

[–]Fight4Light 0 points1 point ago

It's the ladder to a slide that he is climbing

[–]Scientologistics 0 points1 point ago

There aren't any rungs below his feet

[–]Fight4Light 1 point2 points ago

Oh right. Sorry, I'm pretty sick and out of it. I think my mind was just trying to make the most sense out of it.

[–]Scientologistics 0 points1 point ago

To be honest I'm still kind of skeptical that it's a kid on stilts haha

[–]Fight4Light 0 points1 point ago

The old school photographers really impress me. I'm pursuing a career in digital photography and to see the stuff they did without photoshop not only that but they had to be conscious of everything. They couldn't see the picture immediately after, film was expensive with no do-overs. Plus, you can't even see what will be in focus in the viewfinder.

Anyway, I digress, my point being its incredible how they were able to distort things to that extent.

[–]chaddy2o0 -2 points-1 points ago

Just so happened that Beautiful Place by Good Charlotte was playing while i stared.

[–]gkiltz -2 points-1 points ago

It's from the late 1960s at least. Maybe older.

[–]Stemp 3 points4 points ago

1989

[–]mkmyles -2 points-1 points ago

what about teh stilts

[–]seeteethree -1 points0 points ago

Umm, that's your Lolita complex kicking in. Chill.

[–]BlissFoster 0 points1 point ago

I've had this saved on my harddrive for years. It's one of my favorite pictures.

Along with this one: http://i.imgur.com/kyuub.jpg

[–]riptaway -3 points-2 points ago

You mean back in 1998?

[–]Miglu -3 points-2 points ago

Did you really stare at this for five minutes? Seems boring.

[–]sligerpj -1 points0 points ago

it's probably the super sexy child in it

[–]LevelFiveVegan 0 points1 point ago

Children should never be sexualized.

[–]wackywiener -3 points-2 points ago

Sally Mann. Ugh. God I hate her. She is such a creep.

[–]deadair101_84 -3 points-2 points ago

perhaps cuz its a child smoking a cigarette?? ....from the mind of a mother fyi

[–]LORDJEW_VAN_CUNTFUCK -5 points-4 points ago

cigarette and posture makes her look legal

[–]doismellbacon -5 points-4 points ago
