Personally, I felt like OP left this out..

Edit: 1 word removed from comment

[–]CasaElDiablo 306 points307 points ago

That's exactly what I was thinking

[–]skinnyowner 304 points305 points ago

its wal mart. i believe the op

[–]dudamann 46 points47 points ago

yup, my local wal mart has that giant clusterfuck of a candy dish too

[–]ShineOnAndOn 96 points97 points ago

I like it better cluttered, makes me think I can find some good stuff hidden in the nooks and crannies.

[–]pavlovs_hotdog 93 points94 points ago

That's part of the marketing scheme. It also gives the illusion of it being "cheaper" because it's just thrown in. They do the same for game/movie bins. Customers will begin rifling through the mess and eventually just pull out a few boxes because they seem like they're a bargain that the company is just about to throw out.

[–]doomgiver98 51 points52 points ago

The games are also $5.

[–]ftrs13 10 points11 points ago

Kids just $10

[–]cgoodent 17 points18 points ago

WE'LL SELL YOU THE WHOLE SEAT, BUT YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE!

[–]imisscrazylenny 34 points35 points ago

Former Walmart employee here. Yup. Also, I used to organize the bins like this for the hell of it. It never even lasted until the end of my shift. No need to destroy it, but customers do anyway.

[–]Davey_Jones 10 points11 points ago

Also former Walmart employee. Seen a handful of customers do this before. Usually with the DVDs. Then they jokingly remark on how we should hire them. Never happens.

[–]Echohawkdown 8 points9 points ago

Used to work in apparel retail, too, and see this way more often than I'd like to. Some people just aren't taught to respect the salespeople.

One time, we literally had a huge pile of clothes, woman comes in, and just chooses the size she wanted, yanked it, looked at it and decided she didn't want it, and threw it on the floor. When 3 of us were standing 5 feet away.

She did this to several other piles, then after fcking up the store for another 5 minutes, left without buying a single thing (we worked on commission). And this is right before closing, too, so we'd just finished up cleaning that section before she came. What a btch.

EDIT: I do not miss that job.

[–]YourACoolGuy 6 points7 points ago

Wow, that is psychologically ingenious, never realized that. Similarly, they put the milk, meat, and "important" stuff you need towards the back of the store so you pass by all the other stuff and pick up things you think you need.

[–]JuniperJupiter 20 points21 points ago

But it's Wal-Mart...all you'll find are crooks and nannies.

I'll get my coat...

[–]Alexanderh86 3 points4 points ago

I just think about all the germs i get from sifting through any bins in walmart. Be it dvds, candy or whatever. silent bob grumble

[–]TheBakedZorro 4 points5 points ago

yep

[–]MarioKartPrime 62 points63 points ago

Thanks for following Reddiquette and not making a whole new post for this just to karma whore.

[–]Manos_Of_Fate 13 points14 points ago

This implies somebody came across one of these all neatly stacked and separated. At Wal Mart. The OP's version seems more believable.

[–]Sirdannykins 1 point2 points ago

oh good, i don't have to open an art program now, thank you good sir.

[–]mRWafflesFTW 163 points164 points ago

Funny story: We used to clean the bargain bin when I worked for Gamestop because my manager and I could not handle disorder. We organized everything during the sale and made it presentable. Our district manager found it organized, and was completely pissed. The "trash pile" look is a deliberate marketing attempt to get customers to stand there longer as they sort through the mess trying to find something they want. Theoretically, people are more likely to buy something if they cannot find what they want.

[–]AskDoctorBear 62 points63 points ago

I work electronics at a walmart, and we got the same story from our district manager for organizing the $5 dvd bins they gave us. It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. "Look at what a great deal I got on this movie that I had to spend four minutes digging for! A much better deal than if I was able to just find it instantly!"

[–]CW3MH6 108 points109 points ago

If those damn bins were sorted I would have bought a movie out of them by now. But as it stands I'm not patient enough to go searching through a bunch of shit movies to find the one or two gems.

[–]thaway314156 24 points25 points ago

I can see the psychology behind it, "Oh look what I found after sorting through the garbage! What a score!", and the person would be so attached to his prize that he'd pay money to take it home...

[–]ordinaryrendition 4 points5 points ago

So, you're telling me these are IRL le gems?

[–]catatonicfan 19 points20 points ago

gemsgemsgemsgemsgemsgems...

[–]bo87 4 points5 points ago

Disregard comment, downvote use of word.

Welcome to reddit, you mindless fucking drones.

[–]WigginIII 12 points13 points ago

The idea is that, if they are all scattered and messy, it implies to the customer that other customers looked through there as well. And they must have found something good in there if someone took the time to toss around to get at the bottom! It is an attempt, in retail, to mask regular cheap items as "buried treasure."

In your example, the district manager doesn't want items to be easily picked out, because, likely, they are undesirable items. Cheap DVDs. Hey look, a mess of DVDs, you know they are cheap, look how the store doesn't even care! They must be a steal! I wonder if I can find a gem!

Nope...600 copies of Good Luck Chuck.

[–]lanaius 6 points7 points ago

When, on occasion, the $5 bins are rectangular I sort the DVDs for Walmart. None of this OCD talk or anything, it just bothers the fuck right out of me when those bins are disorganized. I also somewhat arrange the elliptical bins, but it's too hard to do anything useful with it.

[–]Cayou 2 points3 points ago

It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

If it sounds stupid, but it works, then it's not stupid.

[–]h3rpad3rp 5 points6 points ago

That's interesting, because I'm more likely to not look through it at all if its in some horrible mess.

[–]CW3MH6 10 points11 points ago

More likely to buy something when they can't find it?

As opposed to finding what they want and buying it?

That is some ass-backwards logic. I personally never waste time looking through those damn bins, purely because it's impossible to find anything decent. If they were actually sorted properly, I'd have probably purchased something from them on more than one occasion. As it stands, total purchases from a bargain bin like that is currently 0, because I'm not spending the time to search through such a mess.

I always thought it was a result of employee laziness. If it's truly intentional, then management is dumber than I thought.

[–]NoticeableUsername 24 points25 points ago

More likely to buy something when they can't find [what I want]?

Absolutely, this technique is actually specifically useful against people with your mentality (though obviously not you personally).

You are the kind of person who knows what game they want and is not there to browse, if you were also shopping on a budget, you might look through the bargain bin for that one particular game.

During your quest, you may stumble upon an old gem you would enjoy playing again. One you would never have even glanced at in an alphabetized arrangement one quick check and your shopping would be done.

TL;DR: It is a technique used to turn shoppers seeking specific items into "browsers," thus increasing the chance of an impulse purchase.

Source --- I thought about it for a little while.

[–]guacotaco 10 points11 points ago

This is an evidence based decision. Studies were done by marketing folks and psychologist folks, and they realized that overall this tactic results in increased sales, even if it is off-putting to some.

[–]mRWafflesFTW 6 points7 points ago

I think it shows a de-valuing of the products in the bin, I guess it suggests to the customer that this is bottom barrel prices, as you literally need to sort to the bottom of the barrel to find what you want. Who knows. Either way, it was dumb.

[–]Cryptophagist 15 points16 points ago

It was from this thread. http://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/ytl5y/i_made_a_new_downvote_gif/ I think you have the one Ciphermind posted that was shortened a little.

[–]RageHippo 26 points27 points ago

My mom refused to take me with her to grocery shopping when I was younger, because I would start to rearrange all things that were displaced....Today I work in a wharehouse and CAN SORT ALL THE STUFF WITHOUT SOMEONE DISTURBING MY NEED TO ARRANGE EVERYTHING!

[–]Phoniexbates 8 points9 points ago

So you're angery at your mother, how does that make you feel?

[–]RageHippo 21 points22 points ago

ANGRY

[–]vletmixutechre 65 points66 points ago

Obviously the pictures are out of order and you actually messed it up!

[–]Robert_Cannelin 55 points56 points ago

Sheesh, anyone whose ever been to Wal-Mart knows they never ever sort those types of bins.

[–]kmofosho 31 points32 points ago

Yeah, actually we do. The 5 dollar movie bin takes approximately 2 people looking through it to become completely fucked.

[–]MeanTree 16 points17 points ago

Not entirely true. Most of the time, yes, but occasionally there will be one worker who has nothing to do (myself) and will make those bins look good. I usually sort the movies though, not the candy.

[–]crackyJsquirrel 4 points5 points ago

I pass those movie bins specifically because when they are messed up it is just a huge waste of time to go through and realize there is nothing in there you want. That however means that I might actually miss a good deal on a movie I like. If they were organized, I would actually buy something from time to time.

[–]kmofosho 13 points14 points ago

Tell your shitty fellow customers to stop being terrible people, then.

[–]assholeofnew 2 points3 points ago

When they come in shippers to my store they are all organized, however people still seem to think that they aren't so they throw them around looking at the same dvds. After about 2 hours its completely ruined.

[–]TwoFriends 2 points3 points ago

Yep. I work in a Sam's Club and this happens all of the time there too.

[–]Windyless 19 points20 points ago

They're just going to come back around and mess it up again. You know that, right? :)

[–]ryopwns 25 points26 points ago

yep. A messy store is supposed to somehow give the illusion of finding a good deal after you've had to go digging for what you want. I think it's a load of shit.

[–]Robert_Cannelin 5 points6 points ago

that's bullshit! That candy is one cent cheaper than where I live, I'm burning down all the Walmarts in my area..

[–]ctguzman 2 points3 points ago

We stock these bins at work, every few days, we literally empty boxes and boxes of candy into an empty shopping cart and lift the whole cart up and dump all of it in there, no organization necessary

[–]bixlersafro 1 point2 points ago

I spent a good hour doing this at the candy bin at a Walgreen's I used to work at because looking at that bin drove me fucking nuts. Store manager came up behind me and ruined my nice little stacks because "it looks more full and enticing this way."

Then when that one was stolen and I bought a new one, I did it myself and it took 15 minutes. No idea what took them so long.
