Come on, really? I know it isn't the show you once loved, but are you really going to sit there and tell me The Simpsons isn't better than reality TV shows, generic laugh track sitcoms, soap operas, entertainment television like TMZ, or all of the other mind-numbing sludge?

Like it or not, The Simpsons presence on TV still raises the average quality of television, it does not lower it.

The show has never had continuity, so no. One thing I never cease to find amazing is how many of the complaints people lob at the Simpsons are completely unfounded if they would go back and watch earlier episodes. Jerk ass Homer? Um, I'm pretty sure Homer was imagining Flanders burning to death and laughing about in the first couple of seasons, among other things. Show sucked once Conan left? Conan wrote 2 episodes...and John Swartzwelder is funnier. etc. etc. Episodes like Holidays of Future Passed and a Fun Thing Bart Will Never Do Again from last season are easily some of the funniest, best looking, and thought provoking episodes of anything on TV. A part like Bart imagining his whole life passing by while being bored in a chair is an amazing emotional suckerpunch, and moved me more than any serious drama on TV ever does.

I'm in my late 20s and started watching The Simpsons when I was seven or eight when it was still two or three seasons old, and stopped around the time I went to university-- at first for lack of TV, but really because the writing got really tired, the plots predictable, a weird shift to topical humour, guest stars appearing as themselves on the show the same way they appear on late night talk shows (a way to plug something), self-referential humour, etc. The animation got better, but that's not necessarily a good thing if it doesn't feel fresh, and really just the voice acting that's still as good as it ever was, but that's not reason enough for me to keep watching.

Really, like a lot of people here, I subscribe to /r/TheSimpsons just to see stuff like this and smile and remember the old days.

I don't get it, what are people reading in my message? The Simpsons is a just slightly above average show. I never said anything otherwise. Maybe I should have been clearer. All I said was its presence on TV raises the bar. Maybe only incrementally, but I sure as hell would rather kids watch The Simpsons than Honey Boo Boo. There are plenty of shows dragging down our culture and collective IQ, and The Simpsons isn't one of them.

It used to be the best show on television, now it's horrible. The same thing happened to Futurama and Seinfeld, you can still be a fan of the show and admit that the quality has taken a serious nosedive over the (now not so recent) years.

Not really. I haven't watched a new episode on Sunday for the past five years because they're just bad. I still watch everything up to season 12 or so over and over though, and I never get bored of that.
