Any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me too as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity?
-Stewie Griffin

[–]nikita2206 6 points7 points ago

I'm not native english speaker and I didn't get it. Can someone explain it? Maybe some syntax tree?

[–]tbunreal68 14 points15 points ago

Being sarcastic because OPs post is talking about something old.

[–]iamadogforreal 6 points7 points ago

Phenomena have non-abitrary heights, usually measured in megafonzies. He's saying that the coolness of this joke has fallen below the socially acceptable 50 megafonzie line due to its age.

[–]sideshow67 1 point2 points ago

What episode is this from?

[–]ssbberggren 0 points1 point ago

Oh he was gay? Doesnt change anything, he is still on par with Jeremy Clarkson and Stephen Fry, Sammy Davis, Barney, Morgan Freeman etc on being some of the coolest people ever to live.

Suck that ignorance.

[–]akjake 68 points69 points ago

How many times is this going to be posted?

[–]tyme 96 points97 points ago

N+1, where N is the current number of times it's been posted.

[–]AluminiumSandworm 5 points6 points ago

So,

N=N+1?

[–]tyme 1 point2 points ago

Yes. I was just trying to be less cryptic.

[–]AluminiumSandworm 0 points1 point ago

I feel like an idiot, who just learned the basics of programming, ruthlessly un-nesting a coding genius' artfully written program, and getting told that this activity benefits no-one in any way.

[–]tyme 1 point2 points ago

You're not an idiot...you condensed my comment while retaining its meaning, that's what good programmers do - find the most concise solution. Clearly you understand.

[–]AluminiumSandworm 0 points1 point ago

I just watched about an hour of zero punctuation... I think it's been influencing me.

[–]AluminiumSandworm 0 points1 point ago

Also, I realized this halfway through, but didn't want to throw away my analogy, as I had spent about five minutes making it up.

As many as it takes before people learn to stop upvoting it.

[–]Robby5566 31 points32 points ago

You know that awkward moment when the conversation has moved on, and you had a joke to tell, but you can't because it's not relevant anymore?

This is like interrupting that conversation to tell it anyway, but multiplied by a couple years

[–]AluminiumSandworm 0 points1 point ago

I do this...

[–]Le_Master 38 points39 points ago

Anything not found in the books is not canon.

[–]geliduss 12 points13 points ago

The reason why many people "couldn't believe that he was gay" is because her saying that was an afterthought to get some more media attention and buzz etc... there's a reason why no one made the connection beforehand. Now of course everyone is seeing things that weren't there to begin with. As well any actual possible connections were in the book that came out a bit before her making that statement.

[–]lebiro 8 points9 points ago

It's hinted in the books. Grindelwald was his boyfriend.

His auntie can say what she likes, but two teenagers sending messages to each others rooms in the small hours of the morning are not discussing politics.

[–]SneerValiant 18 points19 points ago

I would rather have not known anything about Dumbledore's sex life, gay or straight, just like I don't want to know about Obiwan Kenobi's or Gandalf's. What if you found out Gandalf preferred blondes? Or had yellow fever? It's weird and messed with my conception of the character.

Edit: FYI I support gay rights and think having gay role models in media is a good thing.

[–]lebiro 24 points25 points ago

Pretty sure Gandalf had a foot fetish. I mean, he could go anywhere in the world but time and again he comes back to the Shire.

[–]bikiniduck 12 points13 points ago

Or its the fact hobbits are just the right height ;P

[–]t3hkl0wn 11 points12 points ago

OH GOD IT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE STOP PLEASE

[–]SneerValiant 2 points3 points ago

OMG, it's so obvious now

[–]lebiro 0 points1 point ago

OMG I know right?

[–]iamadogforreal 0 points1 point ago

and by 'foot' we mean 'little men who looked like boys,' right?

[–]lebiro 1 point2 points ago

Well if you wanna take it that way, but some bearded wizards are probably straight.

[–]MTGandP 1 point2 points ago

Obi-Wan was a Jedi, and Jedi do not partake in romantic relationships. And Gandalf was a powerful immortal spirit being with no desires of the flesh.

[–]fuckyoubarry 6 points7 points ago

Yeah just like priests

[–]firstrisingsun 2 points3 points ago

Jedis don't partake in successful romantic relationships. See: Luke Skywalker

[–]IINestorII 1 point2 points ago

exactly

[–]MustacheBus 1 point2 points ago

Why, because t-o-d-a-y we live in a hyper sexualized world? Therefore any reference to teenagers must have overt sexual undertones?

[–]FuzzyToaster 0 points1 point ago

I... wow. Duh. That's so obvious but it never occurred to me while reading the book.

Huh.

[–]A_WILD_ABRA_APPEARED 4 points5 points ago

Even if the author says it?

[–]Le_Master 7 points8 points ago

Especially even if the author says it.

[–]MustacheBus 0 points1 point ago

Exactly!

[–]Cheddarwurst 2 points3 points ago

[–]eXX0n 4 points5 points ago

What movie is that from?

[–]Swissmilkhotel 16 points17 points ago

I think the downvotes are shopped.

[–]Robby5566 2 points3 points ago

I've worked in the industry for over 10 years, and can confirm that if you look at the pixels the downvotes were probably added in post.

[–]eXX0n 1 point2 points ago

Nooohhhhhh!!!!!

[–]El3utherios 5 points6 points ago

Battleship, don't watch it

[–]eXX0n 2 points3 points ago

Based on the game? Like the board/table-game?

No, I'm not watching that.

[–]El3utherios 4 points5 points ago

It's not based on the board/table-game, however if it was it would still be a better movie.

[–]ak416 3 points4 points ago

According to the imdb, it was based on the board game. I would link directly to it but I am on my phone, apologies. I haven't seen it though so I really have no idea.

[–]BecauseTheyDeserveIt 0 points1 point ago

The national commercials running right now say "from hasbro, the game company that brought your transformers"

[–]eXX0n 1 point2 points ago

Ah, enough said. Thanks for the heads up.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 1 point2 points ago

...yes it is. What are you talking about?

[–]El3utherios 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, I had to quit the movie halfway through becuase it was so horribly bad, but I don't remember there being any aliens in the board game. And I didn't check up stuff about it on the net either.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 0 points1 point ago

I haven't actually seen it myself, but I saw a synopsis. It explains how they tried to emulate how battleship is played (like the blind guessing and stuff)... and yeah, it sounded totally stupid. They could've made a ship battle movie without basing it off a board game.

[–]Semajal 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I watched it on a plane. It is terrible. Everything I thought it would be, predictable and silly. Pointless "aliens" and Rhianna doing FUCK ALL and somehow being immune to anything going wrong.

[–]edinburg 1 point2 points ago

What no one seems to realize is Battleship is a fantastic bad movie. The hammy acting, the ludicrously ridiculous plot, the unbelievably stupidly shoehorned-in elements of the board game, the part where a Battleship power-slides; it all approaches a Troll 2 level of awesome if you watch it with the right mindset.

[–]mcanerin 3 points4 points ago

My favorite part is when we discover that the old battleship that has been turned into a museum for decades not only started up and worked once some old vets got their hands on it, but was FULLY ARMED AND LOADED.

[–]THEREFOREiEXIST 4 points5 points ago

Battleship: The Movie: The Game

[–]eXX0n 1 point2 points ago

Say what? I'm not watching that.

[–]ThisIsMyFloor 0 points1 point ago

Too bad it doesn't work apperently... The post still has over 1000+

[–]Ajunk 9 points10 points ago

When she came out and said that, I couldn't help but think she was slapping on this extra fact to bolster LGBTQ sales.

[–]FlyingDutchkid 15 points16 points ago

OH HEY LOOK I DID NOT SEE THIS ONE YET. HAHA GOOD ONE BRO

[–]literally_a_whale 3 points4 points ago

One: can people stop posting this? Please? Two: a fan asked a question about his love life and she answered it. It wasn't a publicity stunt. I don't understand why people are so hung up on believing that it was one.

[–]longknives 3 points4 points ago

It's because they're homophobes but they don't want to think they are.

[–]GreedDisaster -2 points-1 points ago

Or just because a lot of celebrities exploit a matter like this in order to appeal to a young and modern generation. Let's not forget that this is actually a reality, too.

I've read all 7 books how did I miss the fact that Dumbledore is gay?

I don't remember a scene where he comes out of the closet.

[–]m42a 18 points19 points ago

A fan asked JK Rowling about Dumbledore's love life, and she said that he had been in love with Grindelwald. It actually explains a decent part of that backstory fairly well.

[–]zeppelinfromled 2 points3 points ago

It's always weird to me when an author states the Truth about a character, even though it wasn't in the books. It's not like it actually happened, and there's some truth to be revealed.

[–]Mo0man 15 points16 points ago

It was the subtext to the entire Grindelwald storyline. Honestly, I was surprised people didn't notice it earlier

[–]MrArmandTanzarian 7 points8 points ago

Not really. A man can love another man without it being gay love.

[–]Mo0man 4 points5 points ago

This is true, but we all know the how the "Internet Shipping community" works. If two characters ever have a scene together, they're immediately in a torrid secret relationship. I was just surprised that it never happened to Dumbledore and Grindlewald, who were supposed to have spent multiple teenage summers together

[–]MustacheBus 18 points19 points ago

I don't think his sexuality is relevant. JK Rowling saw an opportunity to make a social statement an took it. Can we not have a book with exceptional characters without speculation of their sexuality? Does it matter? Does it change the books? No, it doesn't.

[–]trampus1 3 points4 points ago

Is it still considered fanfic if it comes from the author?

[–]MrArmandTanzarian 11 points12 points ago

Tbh, yes. If it isn't in canon then it doesn't really count.

[–]longknives -2 points-1 points ago

Or at least that's what homophobes keep telling themselves.

[–]MrArmandTanzarian 1 point2 points ago

Ah, yes. If you don't suck the proverbial cock of gay people everywhere then you are a "homophobe."

[–]Higeking 2 points3 points ago

indeed

sometimes it's just nice to experience a story without getting sexuality showed in your face. (this does go both ways i.e. both hetero and homo)

[–]MustacheBus 0 points1 point ago

I agree.

[–]Ducksaucenem 3 points4 points ago

I wonder if the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were gay?

[–]Higeking 0 points1 point ago

does it matter?

[–]Ducksaucenem 4 points5 points ago

Did you take that as a serious question?

[–]Higeking 0 points1 point ago

just a little

[–]Phil_J_Fry -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure how you'd classify that if you switched genders... So, I'm going with.. no?

[–]scott_lappi 3 points4 points ago

You're right... they should probably take out all those heterosexual parts in there too... Like Harry and Cho... or Cho and Cedric... or Hermoine and Krom... or Harry and Ginny.... or Ron and Hermoine... or Tonks and Lupin... or Fleur and Bill... or Snape and Lilly... or Lilly and James... Yep, nothing makes books better than sterilizing all notions of sex and romance between people on the off chance someone doesn't share your particular sexual orientation...

[–]Higeking 3 points4 points ago

hmm might be more about how sexuality and love is portrayed when i think about it.

those relationships that you mention have importance to harry as a character.

however dumbledores lovelife wasnt made important to the story in the same way so he could just aswell have had a secret affair with the nurse witch or something.

[–]Mo0man 2 points3 points ago

Dumbledore's love life was relevant to the plot in that it was a key part of his sister's death

[–]Higeking 0 points1 point ago

huh cant recall anything like that. but then again it has been a while since i read the books.

mind clarifying how you consider it to be important?

for me its mostly just a case of people wanting a character to be gay to validate their own views of sexuality. but i might aswell be blind to what you see as obvious.

[–]Mo0man 1 point2 points ago

Well, it was mostly incidental to the plot itself, and I'm not the hugest HP fan, but

a) Story wise: His time with Grindlewald distracted him from his sister's issues which eventually ended in her death and his big fight with his brother. This was basically the first half of the last book.

b) His romance with Grindlewald was a example of what was probably the whole point of the story: Ie Love as a motivation. Examples: Snape being a good guy cause of Harry's mom, The Malfoy family, Harry's parents being human shields, etc etc

Him being in love with Grindlewald (who, if you recall, was like the Voldemort of WWII) blinded him to the fact that Grindlewald was a crazy genocial asshole.

[–]Higeking 0 points1 point ago

hmm i always interpreted it as him just having a friend in grindlewald. and simply had his company as an excuse to get away from his sister.

maybe it is for the best that it isnt explicitly stated in the book so that we all can see it for what we feel is best and thus can enjoy the books to their fullest?

[–]MustacheBus 1 point2 points ago

It has nothing to do with sexual orientation, or the sexual identity of a character! It had no part in the book. It didn't exist to begin with. That is the point. It adds no value to the purpose of the books. If JK Rowling wants to write a big ole gay novel about Dumbledore enjoying homosexual relations wih other wizards, and there is a plot point, I will probably buy it and say, "Wow! Dumbledore's gay." That isn't what happened. The whole premise of her using a characters sexuality to promote a social issue after the fact is ridiculous. If anything Dumbkedore is asexual because he is a fictional character in a book with no character points that involve love. Just because JK Rowling wants to prove she's down with homosexuality. Do you know what, I'm not trying to sterilize anything. Homosexuality is not an AGENDA to me. It is people living their lives as they're entitled to do. They don't need to be pawns in a social puzzle. End rant.

[–]smellsmoist 0 points1 point ago

You're absolutely correct. I just have a tendency to read too fast and miss things and I would be appalled if I missed such a huge plot point...in both the movie and the book.

[–]winkandthegun 2 points3 points ago

there wasn't one. she "revealed" it in response to the movie studio wanting to write in a love interest for dumbledore.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god. Really?

You are so homophobic.

[–]monksawse 6 points7 points ago

Man I hate this one.

[–]dolphin_rape_caves 5 points6 points ago

I hated this. Not because he was gay but because it felt like a cheap publicity stunt thought up after the fact.

If his sexuality was central to his personality in context to the story then delve into it. If it isn't and you wrote seven books without outright stating it, then why do so after the fact?

Felt like a case of Rowling having her cake and eating it. She could pretend to be an outspoken ally while not further pissing off anyone (Wizard loving homophobes) who might've bought her books.

[–]ReallyCreative 12 points13 points ago

Not at all. Someone asked, she answered. She didn't make it a point to tell everyone this, she didn't go out of her way.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Not that I agree with you but pissing off wizard loving homophobes would be a perfect reason to state thus.

[–]longknives -4 points-3 points ago

I think you actually hated it because he was gay.

[–]dolphin_rape_caves -4 points-3 points ago

Dumbledore is gay!? Where has my life been?

[–]nodnarbiter 0 points1 point ago

Repost... Didn't laugh then... Not laughing now

[–]TheAethereal 0 points1 point ago

Either Rowling decided to make him gay ex post facto, or she wanted him to be gay all along, but lacked the courage to actually do it. Either way. Dumbledore was not gay in the books or the movies.

[–]wrcftw 0 points1 point ago

Wow this is not funny

[–]payne6 0 points1 point ago

Honestly I never understood why she made him gay. Not that I care if he is gay because honestly hes a fictional character. Yet it didn't add to the story at all. Never was Dumbledore's sexuality my main concern when I was reading the books. Hell its not even in the books she just said it like oh btw hes gay. I understand you are for gay rights, but just saying "oh my character who was a huge part of the story but his love life has nothing to do with the main plot." Doesn't make great gay rights movement /rant.

[–]TigerWylde -1 points0 points ago

that's all you noticed? the woman has no concept of how to put a plot together in any sense..

[–]payne6 0 points1 point ago

I honestly liked the books (not the movies) the thing I always had to remember when I was like "wtf is this shit?!" Is its a book originally meant for children. I will admit though the last book was a lot of nothing.

[–]pooponagoose -1 points0 points ago

I wasn't surprised. He was the Headmaster.

[–]Shumuu 0 points1 point ago

Of course I can believe he is a wizard. It is fiction!

But since you know some things about his character, it was hard to believe that he was gay. Although I did not care at all that J.K thought Dumbledore was gay.

[–]luna16 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was the actor who played Gandalf in LOTR not Dumbledore from Harry Potter.....

[–]rikashiku 0 points1 point ago

This repost is gay.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Let's see. He's fantastic in decoration.

He lives in a giant castle with a lot of other men. His right hand people include a giant and an old woman.

He wears a dress.

[–]trampus1 -1 points0 points ago

Oh look, our old friend "You can't believe X, but you can believe Y".

[–]brian1987 1 point2 points ago

His name is Ted Alexandro in case anyone was interested in looking up his other stuff. He is pretty funny.

[–]Choppa790 1 point2 points ago

Dumbledore being gay came as a surprise because nowhere in the book did she hint of his sexuality being remotely relevant. Not even in the 7th book is his sexuality important since the relationship between him and Grindewald can be seen as anything but friends. Frankly I did J.K. Rowling made a mistake in doing so. Not that it matters, the same people freaking out about Dumbledore's non-existent gayness are the sames that wouldn't read the book due to Witchcraft.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Who cares? Why does it have to be relevant? What, did you want the Sorting Hat to also scream out each students' sexuality as it sorted them?

[–]Choppa790 0 points1 point ago

Having the Sorting Hat scream out their sexuality is precisely what I don't want. Sex and sexuality was not that important in the Harry Potter series. Fans still theorize whether Krum and Hermione got it on, but the books were very prudish when it came to all sex. It's a children's series not a treatsie on sexuality. Rowling just said "Dumbledore was gay" and that's it. There was never any point to it. Because Dumbledore is a good man regardless of his love life. She never bothered to write anything related to character's sexuality except the fact they were mostly straight.

[–]Ditchingworkagain -5 points-4 points ago

I guess that gives a whole new meaning to "use your wand Harry".

[–]1millionaccounts -1 points0 points ago

It bothers me when people say "a gay." It's just so awkward. It's not a noun, it's a descriptor.

[–]amcuriosity -4 points-3 points ago

Da fuq.. doesnt even make sense.

Referring to a fictitious characters sexuality then hitting me with reality.

I can believe he us not gay purely based on reading the book not that it makes iota of a difference.

[–]lishenzhao -3 points-2 points ago

[–]euryalus0 -3 points-2 points ago

Not one of the students or other characters in the books was identified as gay. Stats say roughly 1 in 10 of the guys should have been - not sure what the stats should have been for the women... With all the hetero romances, she could have at least had one gay one. I for one am not impressed.
