    I messaged the mods the other day, this is how it went:

    Me: Mods, I know this might not be the best time, most of you are probably busy doing God-knows-what but I implore you, you must place stricter rules on /r/WTF. This subreddit has seriously gone down hill, do you know what's at the front page right now? A mughsot of a guy with a large chin, a woman painting her nails, a pigeon and way at the top is just an odd shirt design seriously. I might as well start a petition to change /r/WTF to /r/mildlywtf.

    Mod: for every complaint we get we get an equal amount of praise. Defining "wtf" is impossible, some people want /wtf to be /r/aww, some want it to be /r/spacedicks, so we let the voters decide on the content of /wtf's front-page (which is as it should be) Remember the front-page is chosen ENTIRELY by wtf subscribers like yourself

    TL;DR:

    I asked mods for some actual moderation, they said no

    Edit: I think wtf is not subject of controversy, it either is or it isn't

    wtf is not an art so it should not be seen nor interpreted as one. Shirts, this post, and other things alike do not belong on this subreddit, I just wish the mods would implement a new rule so we don't have to deal with all these complaints

    Yes and no. Some things here still make me say "What the fuck!". This picture does not. It is mildly humorous but very far from WTF material. The same could be said for the picture of the guy with a dead hog hanging from the roof. Well, that wasn't even funny, and very far from wtf, it was just a picture of a dead hog. The last few months /r/wtf seems to have been filled with posts from people's grandmothers. /r/wtf does not need to be on the same level as /r/spacedicks but still needs to have some sort of shock value to make people say, "What the fuck!".

    The problem with that is that reddit's voting system is fundamentally biased towards simple, quick to digest material because of how important it is to get those first few upvotes which set the post on it's way to the top.
    It's why it's common for a video to be posted, go nowhere, then have a gif of that video hit the front page a week later with people complaining in the comments that it's not in video form.
    It's why sensationalist titles are so commonplace.
    It's why crap like this and gore/gross images are the main things that hit the front page, since people just look at it, go 'heh, that's kinda neat/gross', upvote and move on.

    By it's very nature reddit's voting system rewards shallow, simple content and penalises anything which takes time to digest (at least on the larger subreddits.)

    The only way to prevent it is to change the voting system, or extremely active moderation, and if neither happens... Well, there are almost always smaller subreddits that do have the content you're looking for.

    As an aside, I am the newest moderator of /r/fifthworldproblems. I spent hours removing all the terrible content the previous moderators let accumulate.

I mean, there's people who think dicks in exhausts are wtf; I just think it's one of the first pictures I've seen on the internet. Plus they wouldn't feel they're doing a good job if they remove things that get thousands of upvotes. The botttom line is that there is no definition for what is wtf. Some say you have to raise your eyebrows. Some people never raise their eyebrows in surprise. Should they then remove everything? Of course not. You also say "it either is or it isn't." Laughably oversimplified, completely not thought-through. YOU know for YOURSELF what YOU think is wtf. But that does not mean the moderators agree with your assessment of what is wtf.
