i work across from that building, it's one of the greenest and most technologically updated towers in manhattan with solar pannels and generators

[–]BeastKiller450 56 points57 points ago

My mom works in the building so i've been it it a lot of times. It actually is really technologically advanced and apparently pretty green.

[–]stanfan114 90 points91 points ago

I saw a picture of it on Reddit. Apparently it is both technically updated and did I mention green as well?

[–]SelfDeprecating 82 points83 points ago

My dad went to a high school where he had to wear school uniforms and my mom wanted to become an actress when she was younger. I can confirm that the building is technologically advanced and green.

[–]Sinyster79[!] 20 points21 points ago

I am currently in community college and have seen many videos on youtube. It is indeed true that the building is painted green.

[–]spychipper 6 points7 points ago

I work on a farm and capture pig farts to power it. I can confirm that the building is technologically advanced and green (though the dark basement that echoes with the sounds of misery is somewhat smelly at times)

[–]onewiththebeard 5 points6 points ago

I am some guy browsing Reddit. I can confirm that the building is technologically advanced and green.

[–]muckpucker 10 points11 points ago

I saw that picture, I'm wearing green.

[–]kapita 7 points8 points ago

Green.

[–]RunningThatWay 18 points19 points ago

Settled, Half Life 3. Confirmed.

[–]MeldingPlague 3 points4 points ago

So, what you're saying - and I want to be really delicate about this because I know it's a hot issue - is that the Goldman Sachs building is basically the building from Gremlins 2?

[–]strobexp -2 points-1 points ago

It actually is really technologically advanced and apparently pretty green.

.. you just repeated what he said..

You could have been like "Yeah, my mom works in the building, and i agree, it's greener than an outsider might expect. "

[–]dragonlancehuma 386 points387 points ago

Possibly because they own their own generator?

[–]Iminurcomputer 362 points363 points ago

No, I think what he means is that if you are rich enough you can bribe a hurricane.

[–]Mr-Sexy 29 points30 points ago

Lol, damn rich businessmen.

[–]SarcasticSquirrl 7 points8 points ago

Bribe politicians? Psh, small stuff, gotta bribe Mother Nature.

TIL - Your not 'rich' until you can bribe nature.

[–]farmerfound 20 points21 points ago

And they put it on the 4th floor or something. Like they do in New Orleans now, post-Katrina.

[–]Retanaru 15 points16 points ago

Yep, so many generators in basements. Let's put the generator in the worst place possible when living on the coast guys, nah it a great idea they'll never be flooding.

[–]JabbrWockey 5 points6 points ago

Christ - so many failures. Even people who put their generators up higher left their fuel pumps on the ground floor - which flooded and was rendered useless.

[–]farmerfound 1 point2 points ago

Seriously? Wow. That's just stupid.

[–]thelordofcheese 0 points1 point ago

Who...? Why...? Words. Send words: have none.

[–]xauronx 38 points39 points ago

Thank you for bringing a voice of reason. I hope the reddit wave doesn't roll over you after someone posts some highly emotions semi-intelligent and highly extrapolated study about how they in fact are evil for being prepared.

[–]woyteck 24 points25 points ago

Because they can afford to run their own generators and have sufficient fuel storage.

[–]Dysgalty 13 points14 points ago

Good on them then.

[–]gAlienLifeform 3 points4 points ago

Shit, I break a sweat filling up my gas tank...

[–]LoremIpsumDolorShit 3 points4 points ago

I bet I can fill 100 gas tanks

[–]OverlordTommyWiseau 96 points97 points ago

THE REPUBLICANS WANT TO POLITICIZE THE HURRICANE!!!

LOOK AT THIS BIG BUSINESS MONEY BRIBE COMPANY THAT HAS POWER!!!

[–]Politus 11 points12 points ago

The Dems won't politicize it that way. The Dems will politicize it by capitalizing on Obama's role as the man in charge during this, his crisis management skills, and Romney's "let's get rid of FEMA" comments.

[–]thelordofcheese 2 points3 points ago

If anything, this shows that he has no idea how to run a country. Getting rid of something that is necessary yet flawed will not solve any problems, and in fact counter-intuitively will produce more and greater problems.

[–]TheResPublica 0 points1 point ago

There seems to be this notion that 'getting rid of something' will inherently cause it to disappear forever.

Such as the calls to eliminate the EPA. It's not that such a department will not ever exists again - with a similar mandate - it's that in its current form it has become so bloated and drenched with corruption and politicking that it must be entirely shut down and a new department built from scratch in its place.

Similarly, the "let GM go bankrupt" mantra is silly. GM did go bankrupt... they were just given special treatment so those at the top didn't have to be replaced. The traditional bankruptcy approach would not have eliminated all GM jobs - nor causing the factories to be shuttered and destroyed and eliminating all automobile production from Detroit for generations to come. Operations do not need to disappear permanently, nor would they. Simply replaced by an ownership group and management that know how to actually run a company without government subsidies.

Whether you think such an approach is right or wrong... that is what has been proposed. Mis-characterizing what is being advocated does no one any good in terms of finding common ground and working toward mutual goals.

[–]moonrocks -1 points0 points ago

And franky, that coloration looks like the reflection of dusk.

[–]PandaK00sh -3 points-2 points ago

That's gotta be one hell of a generator to power that entire building. There's no way they're still using all those floors and offices, why not save at least a little gas and power what's necessary?

[–]cajunbander 2 points3 points ago

You know they have huge generators right? As in, 18 wheeler trailer sized generators. My parents live up the road from a large regional medical center. During hurricanes, they park one of those 18 wheeler trailer generators in the lot. During a hurricane when I was in high school, we, including the hospital, lost power from the grid for about 8 hours. During that time, that generator powered the hospital.

Bring in a few of those, combined with the backup systems they have already, and I can see it.

[–]PandaK00sh 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I know they got huge generators. 100kw (wow) generators are only $26,000 or so. Grab a few of those, install them on the maintenance floor, and you got power for days for a whole building. I think most of those types run off a natural gas supply line, which I'd imagine are non functional during emergencies like these. I wonder if they have gasoline tanks on them. I bet they use a shit ton if they do.

[–]count757 4 points5 points ago

100kw isn't a huge generator. Equinix in Northern Virginia has 4 wired-up 3 MW generators. They're only slightly larger than a semi trailer. THAT is a huge generator :)

[–]PandaK00sh 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit!!! Yeeeep, that's what I need for my house; a 3MW generator.

[–]xiaodown 1 point2 points ago

... I think I may have been to that facility, if it's the one in Herndon with two sort of long buildings and a courtyard between. The other half of that building is occupied by the company that I work for..

If it's the facility I'm thinking of, we have roughly a hundred thousand square feet of raised floor, filled with servers, and we have three generators that I think are 3, 3, and 2.2 MW (?). We can run the building on any two of them; they hold enough diesel for 60 hours of runtime and can be refilled while running, and we have a contract with a diesel supplier that guarantees 24h delivery.

During hurricanes and other weather events, we have a tech from the generator manufacturer / repair center on site literally 24h a day. We stock food and water, and have beds and showers on site.

It's serious shit, man.

[–]cajunbander 0 points1 point ago

Unless the pumping station has problems, gas and muni water systems generally still work during stoms.

Those stations usually have their own backup generators, and deliver the product via closed, underground networks of pipes. Power goes out becuse it's flying through the air on powerlines, and are extremely susceptible to flying shit that'll knock them down. That's not a problem with underground pipes.

That is why I'm going to live in a house with muni water and a gas range. My parents have never lost water or gas during a hurricane. (And since they live by a hospital, and all their power lines are buried, have only lost power once, for about 8 hours.)

That being said, water lines can get tainted and gas lines could get water in them. Tainted water lines aren't hard to clear, order a boil advisory and flush them with clean water. Gas lines are more tricky, since gas and water pretty much oppose each other.

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

That's really good to know. Now I just need to get one of those 3 megawatt generators in my back yard. That should just about do it.

[–]cajunbander 1 point2 points ago

Your block would love you. Lol

Whole home generators aren't terribly expensive if you live in a place like I do and are prone to losing power. They range from 2-5 thousand, or around 12, 13 thousand for a really, really nice one.

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

At my work we have a few 20kw generators and a stationary 65kw generator out back. Figure that'd be enough for my home :)

[–]EnhancementShaman 0 points1 point ago

Your.

[–]cajunbander 0 points1 point ago

I'm a dumbas.

[–]f0urtyfive 0 points1 point ago

FYI, you could also just have your own propane tank, and a well with a propane generator.

[–]cajunbander 0 points1 point ago

Or I could live in a house in the city, that has a gas range. Which is what I'd want to do regardless of hurricane preparedness.

[–]scattyboy 0 points1 point ago

Most of the generators i have worked with in financials run on diesel fuel.

[–]Juhmaine 0 points1 point ago

They probably run off of diesel.

Ninja Edit: A quick googling brings up this.

http://www.dieselserviceandsupply.com/Diesel_Fuel_Consumption.aspx

Diesel fuel.

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

The 65kw generator at my office runs off a natural gas line. I'd imagine diesel being a great idea for generators. Thanks for the link.

[–]Juhmaine 0 points1 point ago

It appears they make generators which pretty much run on any fuel source. I would imagine in a disaster scenario diesel would be the best. Especially if you want to consider zombie style disaster scenario as they can be converted to bio-diesel very easily.

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

Always gotta think about the zombie style disasters ;)

[–]EnhancementShaman 0 points1 point ago

2MW fits in a 40ft container with 1200gallons of fuel.

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

That'll fit just fine in my backyard. Where do I secure myself one of these bad boys?

[–]GeneralBS 0 points1 point ago

Kodak had their own nuclear reactor, I'm sure goldman sachs could afford one

[–]PandaK00sh 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap. Nice link, man, thanks!

[–]EnhancementShaman 0 points1 point ago

Nuclear reactor but not nuclear power station.

[–]bearwulf 39 points40 points ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it also looks like other buildings have lights on.

[–]RyanOnymous 4 points5 points ago

battery powered emergency backup lights at exits and stairwells most likely

[–]JabbrWockey 2 points3 points ago

Hmpf! Plebeians.

[–]Rat_Cat_Batman 2 points3 points ago

I see it too. Especially the building next door to the right. Floors are lit up, much more than emergency stairwell lighting.

[–]emperorOfTheUniverse -1 points0 points ago

I'd venture to guess that the local hospitals still have power. As well as some other businesses and banks. Loads of places are required to have diesel generators to combat power outages.

[–]123612 126 points127 points ago

"How the world works" = "People who are prepared and pay for generators reap the benefits"

[–]LearnsYou 25 points26 points ago

I also would have accepted "People who make a lot of money don't stop working or close the office, even in the middle of a damn hurricane."

[–]hillesheim1992 4 points5 points ago

I'd be okay with working during a hurricane if I was in a sturdy building with electricity and heat.

[–]Beakerbite 1 point2 points ago

What the hell else is there to do? As long as your family is safe, there is nothing to do until the storm passes and the water drains. I'd rather try to take my mind off of the situation by working than by sitting in a half submerged house looking through the remains.

[–]seinfeldlover98 220 points221 points ago

Damn rich people with their foresight and good planning

[–]bmw120k 20 points21 points ago

Don't see how anyone can critique their foresight and planning ability. Hell, they had the foresight to realize they were helping crash the economy in 08 and started betting against shit they were selling. Evil, yes, but very good at strategery.

[–]MaxFrenzy 11 points12 points ago

Right...I for one sleep more soundly knowing that they can keep their power running on the equity from our homes.

[–]CerpinTaxes 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that insider trading and illegal?

[–]_delirium 1 point2 points ago

It's a bit of a gray area. Insider trading strictly speaking only applies to trading public equities, e.g. buying or selling NYSE shares based on inside information about the companies. Betting against your own mortgage-backed securities isn't illegal, though it might violate some kind of fiduciary duty to your clients.

[–]IndustriousMadman -1 points0 points ago

"Oh, gee, I wish I had thought of spending millions of dollars lobbying to get my taxes lowered," said no poor person ever.

[–]mrdelayer 40 points41 points ago

the only building in downtown NY with a generator is owned by Goldman Sachs

FTFY

[–]Retanaru 16 points17 points ago

The only building in downtown NY with a generator not in the flooded basement is owned by Goldman Sachs

FTFY

[–]nem0fazer 11 points12 points ago

I used to work for GS in London. It was explained to me that the building we were trained in for three weeks before starting (DTP) was an entire backup to their main one in Fleet Street in case of disaster/bomb etc. Now that's foresight, and a crapload of money.

[–]sionnach 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it's up the road - near St Paul's. Just like Golden Lane is the same for Liverpool St for UBS. They're not sitting empty, they just move people who are not immediately important while the BCM plan is executed.

[–]nem0fazer 0 points1 point ago

No. The place I trained at was in was near Highbury and Islington tube. My last office at GS however was right next to St Pauls across Paternoster Square as I remember after I moved from Fleet Street. Good money but I'm glad I'm not in that world anymore.

[–]EdYOUcateRSELF 0 points1 point ago

Its called a warm site (or hot if its completely ready to go) Its becoming a popular trend as technology prices drop.

[–]f-dapolice 0 points1 point ago

Most large banks have recovery sites that allow nearly the entire workforce to be transferred to a different location in case of an.. incident. Became pretty important after 9/11.

[–]MaxRide 85 points86 points ago

OP is obviously one of my douchebag neighbors.

It's my fault and I'm an asshole for buying a generator but neglecting to buy generators and the associated fuel for all my neighbors.

If you are unprepared for a natural disaster the only person to blame is yourself. It is not the responsibility of the government or your neighbors to save your stupid ass after you refuse to take even SIMPLE STEPS to prepare for an emergency. BE PREPARED TO HELP YOURSELF OR BE AT THE MERCY OF OTHERS HELPING YOU. And finally, STOP FUCKING COMPLAINING THAT HELP IS TOO SLOW OR NON-EXISTENT.

[–]clemen2 41 points42 points ago

You're on Reddit. Personal responsibility is a curse word here.

[–]MaxRide 8 points9 points ago

I'm actually posting from an airplane right now. I'm sure there's at least one other passenger who's mad that I'm a privileged person and have WiFi but they don't because they are too cheap to buy it. Ironically, it's probably one of those people who also spend $75 in drinks at the airport bar before the flight.

[–]clemen2 -5 points-4 points ago

Atone for your white privilege. Give your laptop to the nearest person of color or non-male gender. You acquired that through exploitation!!?!

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]longroadplease 11 points12 points ago

always some asshole

How is that person an asshole?

[–]KRossVD 0 points1 point ago

You're missing the subtlety of the argument. It's not that anybody who has more money than me is an asshole, but if that bastard has the audacity to spend the money they earned on something that I might notice than fuck him! He's an asshole! Why can't he just burn all that extra money in the fireplace instead of being an asshole and running his damn generator within eyesight of my house!

[–]DeadForTaxPurposes 6 points7 points ago

Yeah I really hate those bastards with foresight.

[–]Dysgalty 6 points7 points ago

How the fuck is he the asshole? He was smart enough to buy and maintain his own generator that allows him to operate at normal capacity in a disaster scenario. Therefore he fully deserves the right to enjoy luxuries when others neglected to invest in such systems, as he is not obligated to provide others with power when it is not crucial/absolutely needed. If sharing power was absolutely needed (like providing a hospital or police force) and he was not sharing power in such a case, then yes that would make him a bit of an asshole.

[–]MaxRide 15 points16 points ago

I don't think you get the concept of this whole thing. You are not an asshole for being prepared. Your an asshole for being envious of the prepared. The wise man builds his house upon a rock, etc.

That person who shelled out $1000.00 for a while house generator made an investment with his money that he earned. It's his choice to buy a generator, a motorcycle, a family vacation, spinning rims, or light up the grill and just fucking burn the money. The person doesn't judge you on how you spend your earnings, right? How much did you spend going out to the bar last year, on cigarettes?

This is what's VERY VERY wrong with America today. People like Ziggy are the reason people own guns. When shit hits the fan they are the type of person to steal your generator for themselves...you know, because it's the right thing to do! Robin hood and all that jazz. Then of course they are the victim when the property owner tries to protect what they earned and paid for.

[–]Beakerbite 2 points3 points ago

Obviously Ziggy has never had to live without electricity. Growing up with it and then seeing it taken away can be shocking. I've had several power outages as a kid and adult and they generally suck. So he's bored and confused and is lashing out at anything.

Now, people who earn more will live a more comfortable life. I generally have a problem saying that people who make more money "earned it" because that's a total farce (there are so many factors of luck, location, up-bringing, etc to getting rich that you cannot say those who make more earned it and those who make less are just lazy envious scum) but it's a fact of life that those enjoy a larger paycheck will also enjoy more luxuries. There's nothing wrong with someone taking vacations in France while others take them at the local beach.

Here's where the rich getting it better ends though. When life is at stake. From what it sounds like, the guy with the genny is comfortable but those without are surviving as well. If, though, the guy with the genny was watching Scrubs and enjoying central heat while the rest of the neighborhood was freezing and at risk of hypothermia, that would be a problem.

I'm not saying that they should tear down his doors and steal his shit, but if the National Guard needed to take his generator to heat a refuge then I'd say all is fair. As a society, we work together so we all enjoy better lives. At times of emergency, sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures and that could include those who are wealthier taking bigger hits.

All that said, it seems like everyone is alright and it's just a matter of Ziggy grasping at anything to explain the situation.

[–]Cannedbeans 5 points6 points ago

I live in a 50 year old city housing development sandwiched between section 8 apartment complexes and police tape. The house across the street is burnt, and laid abandoned for a year. My neighborhood is shit poor, and I love it. 4 years ago we lost power for 17 days, and directly after decided to save to buy a direct genny. It took us 9 months, and we're the only ones on the block that has one. We've lost power several times, right along with the rest of our friends, and when it happens, we hold food over for neighbors, we've kept fish warm for neighbors, we've charged laptops for neighbors, and yeah, I'm watching my basic ass cable. Instead of assuming the guy with the genny is a raging asshole rubbing his silver spoon in your face, go have a beer and get your laptop charged when the shit hits the fan.

[–]_delirium 0 points1 point ago

I've actually found people in poorer neighborhoods are more sharing in this way. When you move up, you tend to run into more of a "fuck you, I got mine, you should've gotten yours" attitude.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]NonaSuomi 3 points4 points ago

So because he wouldn't let you use his shit that in all rights you had no claim to, he's an asshole. Right.

[–]cajunbander 0 points1 point ago

...running their heat...

Running heat after a hurricane just sounds wrong. Down here, we get the luxury of having 80-100 degree heat and a million percent humidity after one.

[–]longroadplease 22 points23 points ago

I'm not sure this is a lesson in anything except perhaps that GS takes seriously their responsibility to shareholders, customers and employees to maintain continuity of operations.

[–]AttackTribble 8 points9 points ago

When we have a power outage here at the office, my desk is like that. I had the foresight to get a UPS. Any building in that picture could have bought a generator, it appears Goldman Sachs did.

[–]Bupod 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, there were MANY buildings that did have back-up generators. But many of them are damaged from Flooding. Now maybe Goldman sachs installed their generator with potential flooding in mind and so it remains operational, I don't know.

[–]Schwa142 0 points1 point ago

Being a technology reseller, I've found a lot of companies choose not to do the necessary maintenance and testing of their generators and battery backups.

[–]Bupod 0 points1 point ago

Ah, well that'll do it. I suppose they're probably kicking themselves right about now.

[–]JustinBieber313 23 points24 points ago

CLASS WARFARE! CLASS WARFARE!

[–]methshin 24 points25 points ago

What a stupid post, you can clearly see at least a dozen buildings with lights on in this limited picture.

[–]leblancbabyy 24 points25 points ago

well if money doesnt buy happiness it sure as hell buys electricity during a hurricane

[–]budaslap 12 points13 points ago

Wouldn't this be more along the lines of

"Money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure as hell helps to have a backup generator for when the electricity goes out in a hurricane?"

[–]CSchoaff 2 points3 points ago

Its the building from the last Matrix, the one that controls the system..... Haha.

[–]thexfiles81 6 points7 points ago

More like a lesson in how to buy a generator for your building. Stop with this class warfare BS already.

[–]Topwater 1 point2 points ago

lots of lights on in other buildings

[–]droper666 5 points6 points ago

It is a great investment if all your competitors are shut down =).

[–]f-dapolice 0 points1 point ago

They're all running on generator power, too. I work for a large bank and today's "fuel delivery" to our NY datacenter was sufficiently important that they felt the need to tell all NY staff about it...

[–]Standgeblasen 5 points6 points ago

Seems like a lesson in a good DR strategy to me... Their Risk Management team should get a gigantic bonus check.

[–]AxeManActual 5 points6 points ago

OP, I don't get it. Is having the means to afford your own generator a bad thing, or are the Jews in control of the weather now?

[–]Tanie 2 points3 points ago

Is this shopped? It seems to me that if they were running off a generator they wouldn't want every light in the building on.

Either way, good on them for being prepped.

[–]PurpleCapybara 2 points3 points ago

Once worked at a mid-sized company w/ a significant IT department. When a blackout hit, there were only 2 things still working in the IT area: the DB guy's computer and the DB guy's desk lamp. Recognized.

[–]TheWebCoder 2 points3 points ago

Fault them all you want for fucking over the global economy, but not for good disaster preparedness. ;-)

[–]OtterCreek 0 points1 point ago

fuck you OP

[–]lebiro 2 points3 points ago

So what you're getting at is, people with more money have better things, like generators.

[–]budaslap 3 points4 points ago

I have a generator backup up my house and I'd hardly be considered anything other than middle class.

[–]Navicerts -4 points-3 points ago

I bet theirs is bigger.

[–]budaslap 4 points5 points ago

It's likely proportionate to the size of the building, if that's what you're trying to say. Backup generators aren't terribly expensive, especially if you consider what downtime in a company costs.

[–]rick2g 1 point2 points ago

Yes, it is a lesson in how the world works. I think you're learning the wrong one.

[–]Sphinks2875 0 points1 point ago

the generators must be kept pertty safe if they have power

[–]VlaDeMaN -1 points0 points ago

oh nooo look a rich person has power in NY while everyone else is too stupid to buy a generator!!!

[–]Popcom 0 points1 point ago

"Why aren't you at work? No the power isn't out, get down here!"

[–]GiantPineapple 1 point2 points ago

I was just in Lower Manhattan. It does not look like that. Some buildings have a floor or two of lights on, others have nothing. I didn't see anything guns blazing like that.

[–]NakedJuices 1 point2 points ago

And those are the people you want to work for.

[–]TheReaperr -1 points0 points ago

[–]ConnorHD3 -1 points0 points ago

I can see lights on in every single one of the other buildings. Did you ever think that they're just vacated?

[–]cindreiaishere -1 points0 points ago

There is a building just to the right with all its lights on...

what about the buildings to the right of it?

[–]emqz 1 point2 points ago

Is it just me or can you actually see a $ symbol in the lights of the building? but im probably just really high

Goldman hires an entire coven of gay weather witches to divert disastrous weather (created by the other gays). It's good business.

There are many more buildings in downtown with power. They have generators and are mostly health facilities. If you're going to get mad at anyone get mad at ConEd, who shut down power to most of NYC (the black outs are partial shut down, and a little because of blown transformers).

Living in the West Village right now.

What about all those other buildings with power?

[–]Password-123 0 points1 point ago

So what I've gathered from the title is that; this building, owned by Goldman Sachs, is secretly a bunker, and Goldman Sachs had somehow unleashed hurricane Sandy onto the east coast, because they're evil.

TL;DR: Umbrella Corporation is real.

Jews?

The thing I like about Reddit is that many times a post that is clearly intended to achieve one thing by the OP is hijacked by reasonable commentators who don't have time for that bullshit.

A better way of looking at that picture is that only one company in downtown NY has competent disaster preparedness planning. Since these companies have a massive effect on the economy, that's the part that should be worrying people. They can't even protect their own property, why would you trust them with yours?

And all I can see is the employees not getting the night off.

Generator? You mean reactor!

Does anyone even bother to do due diligence on news anymore? Get off your high horse OP.

Most of Battery Park has power. I live next to the GS building and my two roommates walk there for work. We have power, never lost it. The reason a lot of downtown Manhattan doesn't have power is because of the Union Sq. ConEd explosion. Battery Park draws its power from a station in Jersey.

Goldman is brightly lit because they work almost all hours; residential buildings all around it don't need banks and banks of overhead fluorescent (nor floor to ceiling glass).

WTC is black because it's in the blackout zone and it's basement is flooded. All the other blacked out buildings are in the zone powered by the Union Sq plant or flooded.

If anything GS's lighting is a lesson about private sector efficiency in infrastructure versus hospitals and the City Hall...

[–]machinegunmax 0 points1 point ago

The only building with power, really, so none of those hospitals and many other buildings have backup generators like this one. No you're right they are somehow secretly stealing power from the grid because they know people from high places.

ok, so why all the sudden are like half the imgur links i click dead? no one else seems to have this problem as there are not mirrors...

[–]sonanz 0 points1 point ago

I'm having the same problem. I've tried to view this image at least 10 times now (it stays blue since I can never view it). I have no idea why it and a few others don't work, yet this is the first comment I've seen where someone else is having the same problem as me.

Edit: I got it to display by removing the "i." at the start of the URL.

[–]FAStalin 0 points1 point ago

Some of their servers aren't on a backup generator.

[–]Flapjack_ -2 points-1 points ago

Maybe all the less wealthy people should pressure the rich people who own their apartment buildings to get a generator for their building.

[–]Gr8AlphaOgre 1 point2 points ago

I like that you used the word power and not electricity
