Can't imagine what this will do to the underlying structures. Isn't there also a subway directly underneath?

There used to be a train station for the old WTC; I believe the A-C-E serviced there. That being said, active or not, it's probably in the same state as most of the stations in that area: flooded to all hell.

As a guy working in construction:

Hope the engineers didnt fuck up. Because if they did, youll see another 9/11 , but without planes.

[–]TheSuperSax 1 point2 points ago

As an engineer: I hope nobody fucked up. Another 9/11 is the last thing we need after this.

Yep. Thats quite a shitton of water goin down into the earth right there...I dont even know what to expect, I mean, I live in Switzerland and I can tell you that we wouldnt have half the probelms you have with that storm. We have solid houses made of nice thick Concrete Walls, and from what Ive seen(specially that tree that penetrated the walls of a house ಠ_ಠ ), you should get your shit straight.

Spaniard living in America (New York) here. There are forests here the size of Europe and as a result wood is abundant and cheap. As a result, a lot of small structures (read: all houses) are made out of wood and not stone. This makes fires a lot worse too. In Spain every house is made out of stone or brick so if you suffer a fire, your house is gutted but you paint the walls and move on. Having a fire in a home in the US very frequently means losing everything in a smoldering pile of rubble. It's a totally different concept in home construction. And don't get me started on above ground power lines... that's what's causing the majority of problems right now.

The 1 train runs through the middle of the site going north/south. It's now supported by a several-story deep concrete substructure and located fairly close to street level, so hopefully the flooding/damage isn't too bad. We'll see, I guess.

*EDIT: Also, the PATH trains/station, which are much lower down.

I was shocked to see how many people on FB cried out that this was a photoshop and how horrendous and unpatriotic it was for people to share it. Seriously... it's a fucking hurricane, an it hit NY, and that's a big ass hole. But people some how think this site was protected by God and Uncle Sam, so there's NO way it could have flooded other than in a Photoshop by un-american terrorists.

[–]gregorymichael 1 point2 points ago

You were ambiguous. Did you mean bigass hole, or big asshole?

Relevant.

I don't understand, both buildings are high in the sky and the memorial is open. Why is there still a pit?

[–]madagh 4 points5 points ago

I can't tell what part of the site that is, but keep in mind that beside 1WTC, Tower 4, and the Memorial, there are several other projects active on that site including two other towers, a new Vehicle Security Center, and the Transportation Hub.

Thanks for sharing this. I was last in New York in 2004 and kind of thought the same thing, that the construction was done. TIL!

This photo is of an area that actually wasn't originally part of the World Trade Center. The Bankers Trust building (later renamed Deutsche Bank Building) used to sit on this section of land that is directly next to the WTC, and as such it was severely damaged on 9/11 and then de-constructed over several years. The land was then bought and incorporated into the World Trade Center, and at the moment the land is being excavated in preparation of the construction of 5WTC.

Here is a map. Where I drew the green arrow near the bottom is roughly the position and direction the photo was taken.

[–]SgianDubh 4 points5 points ago

How is that shocking?

[–]DocObvious 2 points3 points ago

[–]Lilkriz 0 points1 point ago

is this actually flooding the memorial?

[–]nomofica 5 points6 points ago

This is flooding into the construction zone at Ground Zero.

[–]MysidianPadawan 0 points1 point ago

That looks pretty!

[–]PirateATC 0 points1 point ago

It looks more like Niagara than ground zero.

[–]SockBramsonA Pineapple Under The Sea -1 points0 points ago
