The thought of being down there and the lights going out freaked me the fuck out

[–]welcometoheartbreak 61 points62 points ago

Get the fuck out of the subway you idiots.

[–]pork2001 11 points12 points ago

All the wiring is going to have to be redone, because the water will cause corrosion and connections will have increased resistance and will heat up; some will cause fires. This is going to be expensive in so many ways.

[–]SirErlton 11 points12 points ago

One large can of WD 40 and everything will be fine.

[–]pork2001 8 points9 points ago

I have taken advantage of your advice and bought stock in D 40, am soon to be a millionaire. I owe it all to you.

[–]Unidan 8 points9 points ago

No, no, no, WD 40, you fool!

[–]pork2001 1 point2 points ago

I may be a ful, monsieur, but I solve crimes and have a minkey!

[–]los_braingeles 9 points10 points ago

Where are the rats?

[–]pork2001 21 points22 points ago

  1. Wearing scuba equipment.

  2. Back in their natural habitat, restaurant kitchens.

[–]rdm_box 10 points11 points ago

, teaching cleaning boys how to cook.

I have to ask, where are all these underground images coming from? I'm hoping they are from security cameras, but a lot seem higher quality than that. Are there idiots going underground in this storm? Or does NY just have higher quality surveillance equipment than I realised?

[–]okcchuckaway 42 points43 points ago

It's possible that emergency workers, ConEd workers, MTA employees, etc. have legitimate reasons to be there and are taking a second to snap pictures with their phone. FWIW, someone found this photo on instagram, so yeah it's almost certainly not a security camera.

[–]Jescartes 1 point2 points ago

I hadn't considered that it might be a response team member's photo, that's a very good point! Thanks :)

This is not in Manhattan, it's in Brooklyn (86th and 4th).

Not a local, but aren't Brooklyn stations a lot closer to the surface? It looks like open air in the background, but can't get that to match Google StreetView.

Also if the overhead lights are on, maybe it's not even completely closed off?

[–]pandariyaBrooklyn 5 points6 points ago

They are substations.

[–]Dawggoneit 4 points5 points ago

Some stations are open air, some are close to the surface, a few are deep in bed rock.

[–]dksprocketDenmark 3 points4 points ago

I know. I was trying to point out that this wasn't necessarily from someone breaking in to an underground station.

[–]pete2104 4 points5 points ago

I'm a local who lives not too far from this station. Yes it is open air, and the N line from 8th ave all the way to Stillwell is the same way (cut but not covered). Here is a view of another station on the line: http://imgur.com/r/nyc/nTKvk

This station is the second to last before you reach Stillwell Ave. and therefore is right next to the Coney Island yards. There are a lot of transit workers very close to the area so it makes sense that this came from one of them. This is right in zone B; the coney island yards, which are in zone A, were completely flooded.

[–]assumefalsefirst 4 points5 points ago

This isn't 86th and 4th (R Train) -- it's on the N train towards Coney Island.

[–]Jescartes 1 point2 points ago

... I only have a very vague idea of the difference between the two areas ( by which I mean that i know they aren't the same place...) pardon my ignorance; are the two areas being affected in different ways? Aren't they both part of new York?

[–]dksprocketDenmark 3 points4 points ago

They are connected to the same train system, but in different areas quite a bit apart. In Manhattan it's a true underground, but outside Manhattan not all of it is underground and when it is it's usually very close to street level.

I have only visited New York a couple of times so I'm not in any way an expert - I was just trying to point out that entering a train station outside Manhattan wouldn't necessarily be such a big deal. I don't know if that particular station is above or below ground, but the pictures seem to indicate the tracks are exposed to open air. I also don't know how much flooding there have been in that part of Brooklyn.

[–]yallcat 0 points1 point ago

There is some elevated track in Manhattan, as well.

[–]Jescartes 0 points1 point ago

Ah, yeah, I get what you mean. I just assumed it was underground, but looking again, I can see what you mean.

That would be a lot less of a silly place to be.

[–]dsfox 3 points4 points ago

Brooklyn is across a very large river from Manhattan. Both are New York City, but different counties.

[–]double_the_bass 0 points1 point ago

On the R, 86th and 4th, the platform is in the center.

[–]Fzero21 0 points1 point ago

There was a post about an hour and a half ago with pictures from people breaking in to the subway.

[–]Jescartes 1 point2 points ago

Completely missed that :s seems kind of insane...

[–]fafaforza 3 points4 points ago

Why? They cut power well in advance. And we get to see these cool pictures. Who knew there was a river that ran through the center of Brooklyn?

[–]Toomz808 5 points6 points ago

[–]neighburrito 5 points6 points ago

I never thought I'd ever see a subway station submerged in water like that. Holy shit.

[–]hak8or 2 points3 points ago

This is NOT sandy, but an old video showing water in the NYC metro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h96v8RhLX4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLfvCl4YWg8

[–]ConcernedSitizen 4 points5 points ago

That really makes me want to head over with a kayak and a couple head lamps.

Reminds me of cave tours as a kid - just replace blind fish with rats.

[–]mbrady 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget about the raw sewage!

[–]seekingAnswers91 3 points4 points ago

I wanna see the pump they use to get rid of that water

[–]rdm_box 13 points14 points ago

I want to know if they're going to filter it before dumping it in the drains or into the sea. Many years of crisp packets and fag ends coming up arent't going to be nice.

[–]thndrchld 16 points17 points ago

Caution: British-like typing detected.

[–]rdm_box 1 point2 points ago

Indeed. Most people on here will know them as chip packets and cigarette butts.

[–]The_Bravinator 2 points3 points ago

Packages. :D

[–]MdmeLibrarian 2 points3 points ago

Bags. :D

[–]nycea 0 points1 point ago

I wonder how the pumps handle rats?

[–]meatmacho 4 points5 points ago

[–]b19pen15[S] 1 point2 points ago

She accredits it to ninjapito on Instagram. Link.

[–]Sn1pe 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I wasn't able to see the picture straight from the link and had to input ninjapito in the search box. Let's see if this link works:

Bored....checking out the train station

[–]summitrock 2 points3 points ago

Is that the 86th street in Brooklyn? Doesn't look like UES or UWS stations.

[–]yallcat 0 points1 point ago

Bay Ridge, bk. I would guess that the 3 86th St. stations in Manhattan are all too high above sea level to be flooded at all, or significantly, anyway.

[–]assumefalsefirst 1 point2 points ago

It's 86th Street on the N line towards Coney Island --

86th Street in Bay Ridge has a middle platform, while the N line is exposed and the platforms are at the sides.

[–]xnoybis 2 points3 points ago

Submarineway!

[–]plzdontrecognizeme 1 point2 points ago

How high are those platforms from the tracks?

[–]Swook 0 points1 point ago

Been a while since i was last in NYC but i'd wager 3 feet

[–]bobertson 10 points11 points ago

Naw, I saw some idiot jump down once, they're about 5 feet. He could barely climb back up.

[–]Dawggoneit 4 points5 points ago

I concur. Much closer to 5 than 3.

[–]heryougo -1 points0 points ago

If there is a plus side to this it's that the Subways are getting cleaned. Bye smell of urine, goodbye rats.

[–]Dawggoneit 11 points12 points ago

Rats can swim. They will be stronger than ever now.

[–]thndrchld 4 points5 points ago

No, it's only weeding out the weak ones. Now, the gene pool has been cleansed, and the rats will be stronger, faster, smarter...

[–]NeckwreckerQueens, NY 1 point2 points ago

Hello smell of seawater!

[–]cebullgator -1 points0 points ago

Looks like Venice.

[–]yeehawl 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking that's what they should do - replace subway trains with boats. How quaint that would be...

[–]Mustaka 0 points1 point ago

What I would like to know is why is in not filled all the way. Or did it eventually fill all the way?

[–]GunkertyJeb -1 points0 points ago

I have a hard time believing that a flooded station would have power and lighting.

[–]MdmeLibrarian 0 points1 point ago

Question: Is that water electrically charged/dangerous? Or did they shut down the power rails?

[–]b19pen15[S] 3 points4 points ago

They shut down the whole system.

[–]oDFx 1 point2 points ago

Has subway flooding of this magnitude ever happened before? That's all salt water I'm sure. That cannot be good for the infrastructure.

[–]jeneral_tso 0 points1 point ago

ahhh my stop!! :( holy crap...the platform is about 3-4 feet high and it's flooded

[–]MysidianPadawan 1 point2 points ago

I wonder how many people are gonna be sick from coming into contact with water contaminated by raw sewage and other wastes?

[–]AK40_Evan -2 points-1 points ago

The worst part is that the Baseball Furies are waiting right outside...
