[–]FuckingTornadoes 63 points64 points ago

I bet that smells righteous.

[–]smackisbad 241 points242 points ago

well... on the bright side of things, at least the subway is getting a much-needed cleaning.

[–]LemonDifficult 67 points68 points ago

Homeless people troll about in the tunnels, right? There are designated shelters for emergencies that the homeless can hole up in, aren't there?

I really hope so.

[–]leonsecure 62 points63 points ago

I rather hope they searched the system and evacuated everyone. They should know most hiding points.

[–]minnick27 75 points76 points ago

From what I have heard it is so extensive down there it would take forever to search down there. Plus there are no complete maps of the system

[–]rdm_box 29 points30 points ago

Well now's their opportunity! Put a load of floating GPS trackers in and see where they float to!

Apart from the solid earth blocking the signal, it's a great idea!

[–]Probydoby 23 points24 points ago

That's a retarded idea. Just leave it as it is and let people buy tickets to row canoes from one station to the other.

Also, some people should do some urban exploring.

[–]RaveRaptor 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, but then people will get hit by the 10:15 Boat Way Ship. The captain is very punctual on his time.

[–]mscheryltunt 0 points1 point ago

I vote for sea kayaks

[–]pineapplol 20 points21 points ago

We should send the entire NYPD in there to map it, but tell everyone its a "training exercise". What could possibly go wrong.

[–]Cheese_Bits 48 points49 points ago

How the fuck is that possible? Couldn't they at least have adjoining maps?

[–]minnick27 103 points104 points ago

150 years of drilling tunnels, shit gets lost I guess.

[–]noryork 92 points93 points ago

They should hire that tunnel douche from prometheus.

[–]i_drink_corona 31 points32 points ago

He still got lost though. Can't be too good at tunnels.

[–]moparornocar 17 points18 points ago

They need the little flying bot to go through there.

[–]paleo_dragon 8 points9 points ago

I love me P.U.P.S

[–]mainsworth 26 points27 points ago

Wouldn't Hurricane Sandy be considered a tunnel douche?

[–]King_of_lemons 5 points6 points ago

"tunnel douche" should be a professional title.

[–]Cheese_Bits 17 points18 points ago

Yea, but they're subway tunnels, not the catacombs of Paris, it's just mind boggling that that level of ignorance about the infrastructure would exist. If you can't map out the entire system, how the hell could it be maintained or even inspected. How do we know these 100 year old tunnels aren't on the verge of collapsing? Obviously now is much too late to consider this, but what about over the last 20 years? I'm aware that the system was built over a hundred or so years by multiple contractors and there is a level of overlap between the conjoined systems, but shuttering them and ignoring them is not a responsible means of action.

[–]UrbtoOSU 27 points28 points ago

For the most part it's useless knowledge and mapping it all out would cost money that would be better spent elsewhere. There really isn't much point.

If you can't map out the entire system, how the hell could it be maintained or even inspected.

They don't maintain or inspect it. The tunnels that aren't fully mapped out are largely completely abandoned and haven't been used for decades upon decades. The tunnels that are in use are certainly well known, but there's no use in worrying about the ones that aren't used.

[–]Cheese_Bits 0 points1 point ago

Just because they're unused doesn't mean they dont fall into disrepair and became a dangerous situation for the people above ground.

[–]UrbtoOSU 18 points19 points ago

They don't become dangerous situations for people above ground. I honestly doubt you can find one news story of an abandoned, unused and uncharted NYC tunnel actually randomly collapsing and causing harm to someone on the surface.

[–]NRGT 11 points12 points ago

Its just lizard people and ancient beings from the depths of the earth in there anyway, nothing important.

[–]falser 5 points6 points ago

And mutant turtles. They like New York pizza.

[–]mybloodyballentineChelsea/nyc 1 point2 points ago

CHUD.

[–]Zionist_Reptilian 0 points1 point ago

We really don't want anything to do with that place anyway. Rats give us the heebie-jeebies.

[–]GoldFishie 0 points1 point ago

Love could guide them... like Avatar, only a subway and not a mountain.

[–]Wurm42 21 points22 points ago

Manhattan is a maze of tunnels for 8-10 stories below ground. Different subway lines were dug at different times by a host of companies, to say nothing of the various utility tunnels for steam pipes, electrical wiring, etc.

The sandhogs know where all the important stuff is, but it's kind of frightening how much vital infrastructure is hidden down there without real maps or institutional knowledge.

[–]suchanoob 3 points4 points ago

huh, i never knew movie scenes with people living unknown and unseen in underground new york were realistic.

[–]Wurm42 1 point2 points ago

Well, there aren't actual tribes of morlocks running around in the tunnels, but there are homeless people living there and other shady stuff going on.

[–]DrSmoke 14 points15 points ago

There's a documentry about this. As many as hundreds of people or more live in the sewers, and old train tunnels under places like London, New York, and Vegas.

[–]SociallyAwkwardBees 19 points20 points ago

What's living under the city is not human, it's C.H.U.D.

Jokes aside, Dark Days may be the documentary you're thinking of. It's a fascinating look into New York's underground homeless community, worth watching if your curious about this topic. It was available on Netflix streaming, last I checked.

Actually, Dark Days may not be what you're talking about, as it's set entirely in NY. If that's not it, please post the name if you can recall, I'm curious.

[–]wambotron 1 point2 points ago

Forget Dark Days, I recommend C.H.U.D! That movie is amazing.

[–]louky 6 points7 points ago

I.ve lived in tunnels in Louisville and Olympia.

[–]dabnoob 3 points4 points ago

AMA?

[–]HumannequinNorth Central WV 2 points3 points ago

PLEASE!

[–]spanky12493 4 points5 points ago

"Dark Days" is a documentary about homeless people in nyc tunnels, but in the 80s the kicked them all out, I am sure some still live there but not nearly as much.

[–]halfwaytothebeach 0 points1 point ago

they dont (the dark days spot anyways), its just a big tunnel thing with nobody in it. and trains come by real fast.

source: been there.

[–]aintnopreacher 3 points4 points ago

Living at the Edge of the World: A Teenager's Survival in the Tunnels of Grand Central Station painted a pretty good picture of life underground for at least some of these folks.

[–]painfullyalone 4 points5 points ago

Vegas doesn't have a metro, does it?

[–]Contranine 9 points10 points ago

No, but it has a drainage and a flood management system.

[–]emericle 8 points9 points ago

no, but we've built an extensive drainage system. since there isnt a lot of rain here it's inviting for homeless to find refuge there. When it does rain heavily (as it did several times this summer), it's not unheard of for bodies to turn up.

[–]painfullyalone 2 points3 points ago

Oh, crazy. I didn't know that.

[–]Randominterloper 0 points1 point ago

Always did make me wonder how many bodies have slowly washed to the mouth of these tunnels over the years. Seen quite a few people scramble out of the ones by Paradise and Harmon when the rain kicks up and deposits it's load.

[–]jobrody 2 points3 points ago

You'd be amazed at how clueless municipal governments are. I spent an internship trying to map the sewer and drainage system in Poughkeepsie. The government just didn't know where the pipes were.

Edit: spelling

[–]Drag0nflamezFar away from the storm 4 points5 points ago

So these aren't quite complete?

[–]minnick27 7 points8 points ago

From what I have heard its not. Also keep in mind tunnels for utilities and other stuff

[–]natenash 0 points1 point ago

There should be a google earth layer to show the immediate subsurface/main passages. There should also be an additional google earth layer that shows the 3d infrastructure of the underground area similar to the "3d buildings" layer.

[–]knightofmars 0 points1 point ago

Are you crazy? The Mbwun lives down there.

[–]unusedalias 6 points7 points ago

As someone who has been through many hurricanes, that water moves super fast. Even if there is shelter, it's highly likely that they were unable to find it. Also, include the confusion that comes with panic and you have a really shitty situation in those tunnels.

[–]ridik_ulass 0 points1 point ago

i wonder will those stories of people living under the city end now?

[–]skyfish_landman 8 points9 points ago

As a Swede, i'm salivating right now.

[–]notalandmine 3 points4 points ago

I want to take huge nets and just scoop that garbage out of the water.

[–]d3r3k1449 -1 points0 points ago

Fuck. NYC is filthy.

/snarky Chicagoan

[–]rhapsodicAstoria, NYC 52 points53 points ago

Looks normal to me.

[–]gormster 36 points37 points ago

Nah I think it's a bit cleaner than usual

[–]synserai 23 points24 points ago

is the subway going to have issues with rust after all this is over?

[–]donny007x 48 points49 points ago

Thousands of sensors, latches, switching mechanisms, lights and other electrical and mechanical goodies will suffer damage. Rusty tracks is not the biggest problem...

[–]DrSmoke 25 points26 points ago

City wide OT for every industry pretty much. Hurricane Stimulus project.

[–]Italia_still_sucks 13 points14 points ago

Forklift seller here! 10% off for redditors! We also do maintenance work. Please take your canoe to Suffolk to acquire your new used forklift today!

[–]BoonTobias 1 point2 points ago

Any word on that forklift '13?

[–]Italia_still_sucks 3 points4 points ago

The blueprints are underwater, but if you bring us some bagels we might send one of the cousins to fish it out. Now, how about the new Yamaha? Got it in last week, great new paint job! Might be a bit rusty now... but don't fret! Just call Papa and he fix it for ya if it becomes a problem.

PS - I'm setting up boeys (sp?) to tie your canoe to right now! Get here before the rush! Don't want your new Yamaha to be blown away like y'trees!

[–]made_account_to_say 0 points1 point ago

Using the parable of the broken window to make a point against calling this a Hurricane Stimulus doesn't really work. The ends of the two are different, where the Parable cares about opportunity cost, dollars saved don't help the short term overall economic situation.

Both schools of thought are correct within their own confines, but whether or not $1 spent now or later has the best long term effects is a function of multiple factors, most importantly the current state of the economy, and its future health with and without intimidate stimulus.

[–]toastworks 4 points5 points ago

Put 'em all in little bags of rice.

[–]Finleigh 0 points1 point ago

Goddammit I want to see tunnels full of rice-filled ziploc baggies.

[–]pohatu 4 points5 points ago

They shut off power to avoid much if that. Actually I read someone complaining that it was unnecessary. Hopefully it avoided lots of damage that way.

[–]fresh_herbal_extract 19 points20 points ago

seawater on non water-proof copper wiring/circuits and sensors is bad freakin' news without getting rinsed off before drying even with the power off.

When it does drain away and dries up, that's when teh corrosion will cause havoc very quickly...and a lot of overtime.

[–]CaptainVulva 22 points23 points ago

The rails are no longer going to have that gleaming chrome shine, for sure

[–]mbrady 1 point2 points ago

Chrome plated subway rails would look amazing.

[–]vagijn 6 points7 points ago

Rust will be a minor concern. Water and electricity don't go together well, or actually, they mix very good. Damage to electrical installations could be the biggest problem once the water is gone. Not only in the subway for that matter.

[–]Kuxir 5 points6 points ago

im guessing they cut off the power on the subway though..?

[–]CyriusSE Texas 2 points3 points ago

Salt and other contaminants will ruin the electronics regardless.

[–]Kevinsense 0 points1 point ago

*mix very well

[–]limonana 101 points102 points ago

All I can think of is all of the rats that need somewhere to go.

[–]vinglebingle 7 points8 points ago

God, I am SO glad right now that I unwillingly moved from NYC this summer. The stories I heard of them coming up through toilets were bad enough...

[–]angryPenguinator 4 points5 points ago

wat

[–]tehrebound 1 point2 points ago

Willard made a wise choice.

[–]deputy1389 0 points1 point ago

Why do all these cool animals get to fall great heights without getting hurt, while I can't fall 3 feet in Dayz without breaking my legs?

[–]limonana 0 points1 point ago

Basically, we should just kill ourselves now so rats at least take over our bodies when we're dead, not like what happened to this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27rSqA2EqeU&sns=em

[–]revital9 0 points1 point ago

The article is gone. I smell a rat!

[–]lukeLOL 26 points27 points ago

Damn it, we need Corvo

[–]Zypothalamus 8 points9 points ago

"All right, Everybody tuck your pants into your socks!"

[–]Swook 1 point2 points ago

Those rats are probably dead

[–]Ulys 72 points73 points ago

You underestimate rats

[–]LemonDifficult 8 points9 points ago

Swimming masters.

[–]unusedalias 4 points5 points ago

I don't know. Those suckers are resilient as hell. They also are pretty good swimmers.

[–]Duraz0rz 0 points1 point ago

Fancy rats are pretty awesome pets. Feral rats, not so much.

[–]paperkites1 47 points48 points ago

We should make a trash ball and send it to space

[–]damM3 23 points24 points ago

why not Sweden?

[–]VonBrewskie 10 points11 points ago

But what happens when the trash ball comes back? How ever will we deflect it? hehe

[–]Cheese_Bits 14 points15 points ago

That's a problem for future generations!

[–]Kevinsense -1 points0 points ago

No hehe haha!

[–]cnostrand 22 points23 points ago

Quick! Contact our handsomest politicians.

[–]radarbeamer 18 points19 points ago

Or Sweden.

[–]buriedunderbricks 3 points4 points ago

Probably happened already.

[–]NorwayWobbegong 6 points7 points ago

It's called New York.

[–]DrSmoke 1 point2 points ago

Blast it to Venus. Only what, 10K a pound?

[–]hob196 0 points1 point ago

[–]xblaz3x 1 point2 points ago

[–]slapadabassStorm on its way. 100 points101 points ago

Fuck

[–]DrKisses 56 points57 points ago

What will be interesting is what happens when the city has to shut down for 2 or 3 days for cleanup- things could get really interesting.

[–]DrStemSell 74 points75 points ago

This looks like it will take quite a few more than 2-3 days to cleanup.

[–]unusedalias 15 points16 points ago

You'd be surprised how quick shit gets done when people have no power, no heat, and nothing else to do. After a day or so you are pretty desperate to get back to every day life.

[–]LukeChemistry 23 points24 points ago

what the fuck are we gonna do?

[–]deshki 76 points77 points ago

Walk

[–]Eleminohp 9 points10 points ago

run

[–]vagijn 77 points78 points ago

swim :-(

[–]ParadoxD 62 points63 points ago

Triathlon anyone!?!?

[–]Whipfather 4 points5 points ago

[–]MysidianPadawan 1 point2 points ago

Don't swim, you get sick from all the raw sewage in the water.

[–]DrSmoke 10 points11 points ago

I would stay the fuck home.

[–]Dorfidiot 2 points3 points ago

BUS

[–]absolutlyboring 7 points8 points ago

8,244,910 - Jul 2011, that's a lot of people cleaning.

[–]revital9 5 points6 points ago

Makes you wonder how many old bodies of missing persons and such will be found.

[–]cunnalinguist 3 points4 points ago

I thought this was post-cleanup.

[–]marshmallowhug -1 points0 points ago

Buses will be up and running tonight. It won't be convenient, but anyone who really needs to get to work, etc will be able to get around.

[–]lunarlumberjack 0 points1 point ago

Shhh you'll make the ooz onstable.

[–]grandmaester 81 points82 points ago

Whelp there's yer problam

[–]Source_Australian 13 points14 points ago

Apparently NYC forgot all those lessons which the ghostbusters movies showed us.

[–]webauteur 49 points50 points ago

Looks like sewage. That will take a long time to clean up.

[–]cnostrand 142 points143 points ago

And the smell will... well it'll be the same.

[–]Dawggoneit 19 points20 points ago

Not sewage, just trash that's thrown onto the tracks.

[–]angryPenguinator 13 points14 points ago

And pee. Don't forget the pee.

[–]SensibleMadness 2 points3 points ago

The pee was already there, the depth has just increased slightly.

[–]Kevinsense 1 point2 points ago

Really? My guess is that the trash we're seeing is from more places than just the rails, the water carried a lot of it down there in addition to the garbage that was on the tracks.

[–]lilleulv 8 points9 points ago

And saltwater. That will take a long to clean up.

[–]hypnoguy1 18 points19 points ago

I wonder what the long term damage the salt water will do to the electronics and tracks.

[–]SweetKri 14 points15 points ago

Just put it in some rice. It'll be fine.

[–]Iforgotmyother_name 19 points20 points ago

eeh, I guess that place needed a good purge.

[–]Dawggoneit 16 points17 points ago

And this is how the NYC Canal System started. It's the Venice of America!

[–]Mulsanne 0 points1 point ago

Have you read 2312?

[–]jasonw56k 17 points18 points ago

Can someone from NYC explain the meaning of the sign in the photo? I have to board certain cars of the train to get to 145 street? Don't really understand how that would work. Sorry, I'm really curious, I'm from SF and our rapid transit system (BART) is quite simple. At least, the whole train generally goes to the same destination...

[–]steerio 39 points40 points ago

145 St station has a very short platform that can only accommodate for five cars (instead of the full length of ten cars), so the train only opens the front five of them. The sign advises you to use one of these if your destination is there.

[–]tulpan 8 points9 points ago

it surely does arrive, but due to shorter platform only 5 cars doors will be opened. That's my thought.

[–]AStabToTheEye 7 points8 points ago

That's how it works. They start announcing it at 116th street, five stops before the station you are looking at. You basically need to move up to the first five cars of the train if you want to get off at 145th. You have a couple opportunities to change cars while the train is stopped if you move quickly, which is preferable to moving through them when the train is moving.

If you don't move up, you arrive at 145th, but your train door don't open and you end up at the last stop, 148th.

[–]ZippyDan 4 points5 points ago

I think that station is quite small, and the platform only accommodates 5 cars

[–]agnosticnixie 0 points1 point ago

There's three lines on that particular train (1-2-3) and not every station accomodates all three at all times, with some of them not having full size platforms.

[–]lurw 1 point2 points ago

Fun fact: In Switzerland, there are trains which will split at some given station and continue to run as individual trains, for example in front of two valleys, where one half will continue in the "left" valley, and the other in the "right" one. If you don't read the signs properly at one of the stations before, it's entirely possible you end up pretty far from your planned destination.

[–]feminist 16 points17 points ago

Lucky for us they had exactly one shot left on their film camera.

Who doesn't walk down the last few steps and TAKE A FEW MORE PHOTOS?

OP - where did you originally get this photo from?

[–]Bear_Masta 3 points4 points ago

Looks like a surveillance camera.

[–]BlueThundah 2 points3 points ago

No, its someone standing on the top of the stairs.

[–]Swook 7 points8 points ago

Question: Are the subway cars parked somewhere safe? If not? Will this much flooding wreck them beyond repair?

[–]vagijn 12 points13 points ago

I imagine they are somewhere on higher ground. And yes, putting a subway car in enough water to flood the engines does kill it. - But I imagine the cars will not be the biggest problem after the storm...

[–]REDDIT- 0 points1 point ago

Flood the engines? Isn't the NYC subway like all other light rail trains in that it's powered electrically by the third rail?

[–]Wilcows 10 points11 points ago

Oh, so because it runs on electricity it doesn't need an engine right? You just put a current on it and it'll run itself... right??

[–]SaneBrained 32 points33 points ago

Engine is commonly used to describe fuel burning engines. Motor is commonly used to describe electric motors. Motor and Engine are, however, synonyms.

[–]REDDIT- 4 points5 points ago

It's semantics, I guess. I think of the internal combustion engine when I see the word "engine".

[–]Kevinsense 1 point2 points ago

Wow I never thought I'd get the opportunity to talk to the actual Reddit! I have a question for you, REDDIT- Has this ever happened before, flooding of the subway? I should think that this can't be the first time it has happened.

[–]i_can_see_yo_brainz 0 points1 point ago

His point was that they have motors and not engines. Electric motors will have different problems from internal combustion engines when they are flooded. I am not an expert on this, but I suspect that electric motors fare better when they get wet (when off) and then dry. IC engines will have problems with rust in parts of the engine that are impossible to get to without total dissasembly.

[–]MaliciousH 3 points4 points ago

Some might be in the subway lot out in Brooklyn/Queens. Then again, not sure how that lot is doing since its so close to the water. I'm sure that there are some other yards they use.

[–]silent_but_dirty 3 points4 points ago

If I remember correctly from Irene, they don't have room at the lots for all of them, so some are parked at stations. I assume underground stations in outer boroughs, far from the rivers.

[–]themonkeyaintnodope 0 points1 point ago

All of the 3 train equipment got moved to the express tracks under Broadway. Lenox Yard is particularly prone to flooding (see the left edge of the photo), which is why this was closed down even earlier than the other subway lines.

[–]upturn 1 point2 points ago

New York City has about two dozen rail yards that serve its subway. Some of them are below ground. There's a Reuters article being published in various papers that mentions some of the rail yards were flooded, but doesn't mention any damage to rolling stock. We'll have to wait and see.

[–]majortom1981 1 point2 points ago

The news stated they are parked at a lot of the yards. Well that's what the head mta guy stated.

[–]NyNYC83 20 points21 points ago

That station always floods, and there's usually a fire caused by trash once every 3-4 years.

[–]Jord-evans 10 points11 points ago

OHH, WE ARE GONNA HAVE ANTS!

[–]encee_rzToronto, ON 10 points11 points ago

Well, that's pretty disgusting.

[–]Puge 28 points29 points ago

Dat trash

[–]JurassicCotyledon 31 points32 points ago

To be fair, noone else was picking it up.

[–]orbitur 0 points1 point ago

Good Guy Flood.

[–]dirtyredhead13 3 points4 points ago

I don't know why I just saw that and then thought Titanic..

[–]dratthecookies 3 points4 points ago

But what will become of the mole people!

[–]rhokad 2 points3 points ago

Master Splinter NOOOOoooo

[–]xjustsmilebabex 2 points3 points ago

That's sick.

[–]xoites 2 points3 points ago

New York City is going to be screwed for a while. There is no way they are going to clean that up in a hurry.

[–]identifiedlogo 1 point2 points ago

That looks like a nightmare!

[–]DarknessFallsOverUsIn Europe. Lol. 1 point2 points ago

That's actually kind of cool. But when the water level drops and the trash will either float away or hit the tracks and cement. Going to be one hell of a clean up.

[–]xnoybis 1 point2 points ago

Submarineway FTW!

[–]ilovebologna 2 points3 points ago

That is going to fucking stink in a couple of days ....

[–]paulieo53 0 points1 point ago

Long overdue. Nature sends in a cleaning crew...b/c politicians steal all the clean up funds. ;)

[–]Kalmah666 0 points1 point ago

as someone from montreal, at least all that wet stuff isnt piss

[–]Kevinsense 1 point2 points ago

Do Montreal subways flood with urine?

[–]Dorfidiot 1 point2 points ago

bring a nice camera when you do something crazy.

[–]imhoneybooboochild 1 point2 points ago

I remember thinking, "Damn, if the subway floods, there's going to be a LOT of trash." I was right!

[–]Probably_immortal 1 point2 points ago

I see Jay and Silent bob are doing well.

[–]_supernovasky_ 0 points1 point ago

This kills the subway.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

How many homeless were washed away?

[–]binging 1 point2 points ago

Crab People will soon emerge

[–]HowImetYou 0 points1 point ago

well...since they are already down there, they could start cleaning as well

[–]brielem 1 point2 points ago

but why are the lights on?

[–]Linkruleshyrule 0 points1 point ago

Send the trash to Sweden

[–]FranceisBologna 1 point2 points ago

Residents of NYC, can we at this time agree to make sure our trash goes in the bin only. Pretty please?

[–]Patcheditor 1 point2 points ago

I just hope the TMNT are OK.

[–]kgilr7 1 point2 points ago

This is very stupid. If the lights go out, they're screwed. I f they slip and fall in they will get very sick. I hope they don't do this again. Good picture though.
