7Zip is free for a full version and does the same thing.

EDIT: I mean that I prefer 7Zip over winrar. I see how the way I put it was like saying its better because its free but I do like it better for its useability.

No, I can confirm that they are not the same when I used winzip the trial version actually ended for me alot of people it just never ends and winrar is free.

Stop downvoting. 7zip is the best thing out there. It can often unzip extra filetypes too (I've done it to .exe just to see what was in there). It's a very robust piece of freeware. Plus, it fits right into the context menu. Add Notepad++ and you can do plenty of snooping.

The thing I like about 7zip is it decompresses really fast. Now that I mainly use a computer with a 5400 HDD though, WinRar is effectively just as fast. I don't like 7zip's interface at all (or maybe I'm just used to WinRar?).

There are still companies out there that are paying licensing fees for it because it's part of their standard software bundle. I had it pre-installed on my work computers at 2 different companies in 2007-2008.

However owns the rights is getting an insane return.

I installed windows 7 on my uncle's laptop and I installed all the softwares he needed including winrar. 2 days later I come back to his house to find out he bought it! He told me "I hate having problems with trials and shit, I prefer buying it right now instead of having to do it later". He must've made someone happy.
