You think those forest fires out west were big? Yea, well...THE SUN.

[–]Lord_NiteShade 29 points30 points ago

You think the sun is big? Have you seen a fucking Xbox controller?

[–]BrohemianRhapsody 17 points18 points ago

That joke isn't as funny when it doesn't use the original Xbox controller.

[–]abortedhivemind 0 points1 point ago

You think the observable universe is big now? Just wait 1010500 years, it's gonna be real fucking huge.

[–]Throwaway281281 0 points1 point ago

The big freeze

[–]brussels4breakfast 75 points76 points ago

Always doing the one-upman shit.

[–]whiskeymikie 27 points28 points ago

I'm getting tired of that shit

[–]Cormophyte 4 points5 points ago

Fucking NDT. I knew that fuck was bought and paid for by the Jupiter lobby years ago!

Don't go to Jupiter! No matter how hard these guys shill for its tourism board.

[–]Fuglypump 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, stupid smart guy didn't think we'd catch onto his schemes.

[–]wurtis16 -1 points0 points ago

One-uppity

[–][deleted] 94 points95 points ago

Yeah no shit Neil, I think i learned that in elementary school. Just saying

[–]Gorkymalorki 62 points63 points ago

It is also not destroying any homes or ruining people's lives. Just saying.

[–]abortedhivemind 10 points11 points ago

Unless Jupiter somehow ejects it at just the right angle and Earth gets hit with a ball of about 3-4 Earth mass's worth of unbreathable helium and hydrogen.

[–]mpordon 2 points3 points ago

easy, we'll just build a giant one of these to deflect it http://www.aweseurs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/airzooka-demo.jpg

[–]Throwaway281281 0 points1 point ago

If you live on Jupiter it's fucking your shit up though

You are so right, thank god Neil is there to save them! Oh, praise him, Oh, praise him!

[–]CaptainCaucasian 31 points32 points ago

This isn't funny.

[–]Flapjack_ 24 points25 points ago

This isn't fucking funny

Why would you post this here

[–]sydneygamer 1 point2 points ago

You know that rule "only post if you are funny"?

Fucking nobody follows that rule.

[–]zoltar_says 58 points59 points ago

I'm sorry but I think this guy is a condescending dick. He always has to one-up or make people feel inferior.

[–]orange_kevin 20 points21 points ago

Exactly how I feel about him. He's just not funny, he grinds my gears beyond belief because he has himself up on this pedestal.

Yeah, Jupiter has a massive storm on it, but that storm isn't on Earth and isn't about to whack into a few million people. Get some perspective, Neil, you condescending prick.

[–]Iron_tiger_of_flames 7 points8 points ago

No, man. Fuck you. SCIENCE SPACE>EARTH

WHY ARE WE SPENDING MONEY HELPING AFRICANS? WE GOT JUPITER TO EXPLORE BITCHES

[–]madumimike 5 points6 points ago

I feel the same way. What kills me about this guy, is that he's not even known for anything worthwhile. While other scientist are trying to figure out Higgs-Boson, Anti-Matter or Renewable energy technology, this guy gets more fan-fare for being literally just a mouthpiece. So he went to some big shot schools, studied Astronomy and shit, talks about that shit on TV, but that's pretty much the extent of it. If someone knows what else he is working on other than publicity, TV Astronomy, Twitter, or some other shit, please let me know. I'd love to be wrong here.

[–]JakJakAttacks 15 points16 points ago

Seriously. Who gives a fuck how big Jupiter's fucking spot is now? Sandy is big enough. Yet he's trying to downplay the fact that people are losing their homes and lives with trivial facts that no one cares about right now. Bad form.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Yet he's trying to downplay the fact that people are losing their homes and lives

I really don't think this was his intention.

[–]dezholling 7 points8 points ago

Maybe. I just saw the tweet as a way to broadcast a cool astronomy fact by being topical, which is a good way to reach people who aren't inherently interested in astronomy.

[–]miseryisnotdead -4 points-3 points ago

I thought this was obviously the case. I suppose he could have worded it better but I really don't think he meant it as "quit your whining over this hurricane you're experiencing and think about the poor souls over on Jupiter!" I read it as if he's joking a bit, and even though I don't think it's that funny I also don't think he's an asshole for it.

Edit: it might be the 'just saying' part at the end that makes it really come across as dickish. Especially if you're already reading it as having a condescending tone.

[–]MAJORpaiynne 7 points8 points ago

If you love Jupiter so much then why don't you live there!

[–]abovepostisfunnier 2 points3 points ago

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

[–]MrHatebreed 16 points17 points ago

Yeah Neil tell this nice facts to the victims that Sandy already caused ... arrogant dumbass

[–]ninjivitis 8 points9 points ago

But we don't live on Jupiter! Just sayin'.

[–]KDIZZLL2 39 points40 points ago

This guy is full of himself, I still can't figure out why people on /r/ worship this guy?

[–]kuikka3 13 points14 points ago

People watch couple of episodes of Mythbusters and think they are scientists too..

[–]BurntTheToast 8 points9 points ago

I watch for buster's death and karie.

[–]Brickfrigid 2 points3 points ago

Dat assss

[–]poopshackle -5 points-4 points ago

Agreed

[–]FAguy00 5 points6 points ago

I can't believe I'm saying this, but.

[–]Devon302 8 points9 points ago

Sorry Neil, should I be boarding up my home and evacuating because Jupiter is large and stormy?

[–]scottoh 8 points9 points ago

OP's thoughts:

"Oh joy! Neil Degrasse Tyson is saying something about Hurricane Sandy! I'll get loads of Karma for sure!"

[–]sydneygamer 4 points5 points ago

If only he was wrong.

[–]Mackinstyle 12 points13 points ago

"Like I said before, don't be a one-upper."

[–]mark10579 1 point2 points ago

Carolla?

[–]Mackinstyle 0 points1 point ago

=)

[–]yourstupid2 4 points5 points ago

KARMA PINATA

[–]OldZippo 1 point2 points ago

¡Olé!

[–]CoyoteStark 5 points6 points ago

It's interesting, really. Up until /r/funny,politics,atheism,etc. got called out on worshipping this man, literally every post he had was in the thousands of karma. Everyone disliking him now is still a massive circlejerk, just going in the other direction.

[–]Hougigo 0 points1 point ago

Never liked this prick. Fuck him and his worshippers.

[–]MVPyouknowme 5 points6 points ago

Douchebag NDT

[–]eldovaking 8 points9 points ago

Well mr neil how is that storm in another planet going to affect us here in earth? Im just asking?

[–]RebelWithoutAClue 4 points5 points ago

There's some poor trailer park on Jupiter which has been ravaged by an epic gyre that has lasted for 400yrs.

[–]Biganon 3 points4 points ago

Who gives a fuck ? Sandy is still fucking huge for a hurricane. Yeah, there are bigger things in the Universe, we get it, thanks.

[–]Siethron 2 points3 points ago

Ok but what about percentages, I'm betting sandy covers a higher percentage of the earth's surface than big red.

[–]cakeandale 2 points3 points ago

Hmm... interesting theory.

Without doing any real hard research, Hurricane Sandy appears to have been 280km in radius. That works out to about 250,000 square kilometers, or 0.048% of the Earth's surface.

The great red spot, however, seems to be about 20,000km in diameter, which works to about 1.3 * 109 square kilometers. Jupiter appears to have a surface area of only 6.14 * 1010 square kilometers, meaning that the great red spot takes up 2% of Jupiters surface.

Bummer.

[–]SacredTorment 2 points3 points ago

Siethron said earth's surface..not jupiter's. Big red is on jupiter..not on earth. So big red covers 0.0% of earths surface whereas Sandy, according to your calculations, covers 0.048% of earth's surface. Technically, Siethron is right.

[–]abovepostisfunnier 2 points3 points ago

Technically correct is the best king of correct.

[–]nail1r -1 points0 points ago

It can't be 280 km. I don't know if they are talking about the epicenter when they say that, but that's a ridiculous claim. Looking at those satellite images, I'd say a couple of thousand kilometers at least. And anyways, talking about the great red spot, I'm sure they don't mean the epicenter only.

[–]HiImDan 1 point2 points ago

Nope: Surface area of Sandy: 246300 km2

Surface area of Earth: 510072000 km2

Percentage: .048

Surface area of Big red: 439822971 km2

Surface area of Jupiter: 62200000000 km2

Percentage: .707

[–]SacredTorment -1 points0 points ago

sandy covers a higher percentage of the earth's surface than big red because big red isn't on earth. sandy - .048% of earth's surface. jupiter - 0.0% of earth's surface.

[–]SacredTorment -2 points-1 points ago

Hahah nice comic, bro!

[–]hippopotacat 0 points1 point ago

Man, imagine having 439822971 km2 of big red, cinnamon heaven.

[–]me_and_batman -1 points0 points ago

Pretty sure none of that shit on Jupiter is ON earth's surface as was the posed comparison.

[–]SacredTorment -3 points-2 points ago

yep

[–]I_STAB_HIPSTER_FILTH 2 points3 points ago

I'll be sure to keep an eye on it next time I drive by jupiter area. Just saying

[–]Duplicate_Pie 1 point2 points ago

WOWOWOWOW! Now only if that storm on Jupiter were affecting the Earth in any kind of way that statement would be applicable to this situation in any kind of way....

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Why is it that Reddit feels the need to psychoanalyze the entirety of a man's personality based on one twitter post of all things?

[–]thorns0014 1 point2 points ago

For the past 15 years a second hurricane has been raging that is slightly smaller, but growing.

[–]BIC3PS 0 points1 point ago

It's not the size of the storm that counts, it's how you use it.

[–]garrettmikesmith 0 points1 point ago

I hear Saturn floats in water too.

[–]BelugaTaquito 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else surprised that it's only 400 years old? I guess I always thought that anything that big has to be much older than that.

[–]MugatusDog 0 points1 point ago

...and then there's your mom

[–]saadit_k 0 points1 point ago

So brave.

[–]thetasigma1355 0 points1 point ago

I think this goes to show you, any internet hero is one hurricane and off-the-mark joke away from being the most hated man on reddit. I'm sure mittens will do something to re-take the lead, but I'm guessing NDT is going to have the crown at least until the hurricane passes.

[–]iLuVtiffany 0 points1 point ago

This man loves his "Just saying".

[–]MagnusTheGreat -1 points0 points ago

Scientists: They can always one-up everyone.

[–]tabret2004 1 point2 points ago

Fortunately, I'm not on Jupiter, so my biggest concern is Sandy.

[–]Shadowheim 0 points1 point ago

TL;DR: Fuck you, Florida.

[–]Truck43 0 points1 point ago

That would be funny if the storm wasn't killing dozens of people and destroying thousands of homes.

Asshole.

[–]JD1313 0 points1 point ago

That storm blew my doormat away.

[–]hereforeyebleach 0 points1 point ago

NdGT is a really intelligent and interesting but sometimes it feels like he makes really unnecessary statements on twitter. Of course when are statements ever necessary on twitter....

[–]Hougigo 0 points1 point ago

Why the fuck is this funny? Fuck NDT

[–]stevelain 1 point2 points ago

If you think Scumbag Steve is a douche, Neil deGrasse Tyson is the douche king. Just saying...

[–]cocktastic_voyage 0 points1 point ago

We aren't ON Jupiter, asshole.

[–]vinox -1 points0 points ago

TIL! Didn't know that, and it sure puts some things in perspective :|

[–]SDcowboy82 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but the red eye hasn't killed anyone yet. It's all bark and no murdertime

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Ok, by the look of this thread, Neil deGrasse Tyson reached the circlejerk point of no return.

[–]UndeadSteveIrwin -1 points0 points ago

No shit Neil, it's also not relevant to the current storm on earth.

[–]RudyBagels 0 points1 point ago

Yeah Andy, but we're stuck in here and Jupiter is way the hell out there and that's just the way it is.

[–]ginger_mittens 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad to see that people aren't necessarily backing this. I know we are supposed to love the guy but with a death toll already nearing 100 people this is not the most tactful tweet in the world

[–]Abraham_Wallace 0 points1 point ago

neil degrasse tyson is a fag shut up

[–]lazergator -2 points-1 points ago

I wonder if hes tired of educating us yet. Just saying.

[–]jinxypig 0 points1 point ago

what a fucking dumb comparasion.....

[–]glaciator -4 points-3 points ago

Isn't the great red spot dissolved now?

[–]Indigoh -3 points-2 points ago

Actually, the Great Red Spot storm stopped millions of years ago, but we still see it going because it takes so long for light to reach us from that far away.
