Love the photo, but it wasn't taken today. See: https://twitter.com/The_Old_Guard/status/262948037536649217

Also, here are some other misleading/fake photos currently circulating the Internet:

[–]wikipediabrown007 15 points16 points ago

Here's the original photo from September

[–]SkippyTheDog 12 points13 points ago

Not to be the ball buster, but this picture isn't from Sandy. It was taken in September of this year.

Also, so many people are wondering: Are they required to stand guard 24/7?

Do they stand guard 24/7? Yes, yes they do. The guard is rotated typically about every 30 minutes to an hour, but this time period can be changed due to weather. The time during bad weather will probably be reduced to 15 minutes, as it has been in the past.

Are they required to stand guard 24/7? Technically not, but they always have. There have been instances of bad weather where the guard was allowed to leave their station and seek shelter. They were not ordered to leave, but they politely declined and remained at the tomb. As far as I know, they have never left it since they first started posting guards.

I feel bad for the first soldier that does decide to seek shelter. (If that ever happens.)

i think it's pretty moving to see these guys do this kind of thing, it's been going strong since 1937 I personally would die before being the guy to break that record

Let's see: face this category 6 hurricane that breeds tornadoes and shoots lightning from the sky at everything that moves, or abandon post?

guess i'm going to be in the history books after all!

[–]fernguts 14 points15 points ago

Misleading title. The main body of the hurricane hasn't come ashore yet. You can also tell by the angle of the rain that it's not very windy. They definitely be there when Sandy comes ashore. Besides, this photo isn't even from today.

[–]treebeard189 0 points1 point ago

They will stay there as ling as possible but you are correct that photo is pretty old. Not sure at what point they pull the plug but they take that duty very seriously so they will probably be out there till the wind gets to high.

"The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier maintain their vigil even as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Eastern Seaboard. The Old Guard has guarded the tomb every minute of every day since April 6, 1948. Today will be no exception." 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)

so, short of nuclear war they will be there

[–]Rustysporkman 4 points5 points ago

If conditions are really unsafe -- like if the hurricane passed directly through that area with strength -- would they still be out there? What kinds of considerations/precautions can they take?

Edit:spelling

[–]skatch 12 points13 points ago

My brother did a stint in the Old Guard. Quote from him:

"You do know that the Tomb Guards don't walk the carpet 24 hours a day, right? They also have a box to stand in during nasty weather. In addition, when it's really dangerous they are under cover, not walking back and forth like a bunch of damn fools. They're dedicated not stupid."

[–]Rustysporkman 0 points1 point ago

I appreciate your brother's candor.

Closest info I could find:

https://tombguard.org/society/faq/

YES, BUT the accomplishment of the mission and welfare of the Soldier is never put at risk. The Tomb Guards have contingencies that are ready to be executed IF the weather conditions EVER place the Soldiers at risk of injury or death – such as lightning, high winds, etc.

[–]jrPRICE9225 4 points5 points ago

now that is military discipline. God bless them and the United States of America!

TRUCKS!

[–]kLipsiS 0 points1 point ago

How Long do they stand per shift, like 12 hours?

[–]greencurrycamo 7 points8 points ago

Hour in the winter, 30 minutes in the Summer.

My bad here is the legit answer I was a little off.

During the day in summer months from April 1 to September 30, the guard is changed every half hour. During the winter months, from October 1 to March 31, the guard is changed every hour. After the cemetery closes to the public (7 p.m. to 8 a.m. April through September, and 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. October through March), the guard is changed every 2 hours. The ceremony can be witnessed by the public whenever Arlington National Cemetery is open.

Literally copy pasta'd from wikipedia

[–]SkippyTheDog 1 point2 points ago

Shifts are typically 30 minutes to 1 hour during the daytime (depending on the season). When the area is closed to the public, shifts are 2 hours. During cases of bad weather, they are 15 minutes.

[–]rainboy 0 points1 point ago

are they required to stand guard no matter what?

[–]jrPRICE9225 3 points4 points ago

yup. There is always at least one guard

[–]IndieAtheist 0 points1 point ago

this was taken in september.

[–]PatriotGabe -1 points0 points ago

[–]aak937 -1 points0 points ago
