Isn't a Mexican standoff one involving three people, like in The Good the Bad and the Ugly?

[–]aequitas3 212 points213 points ago

Yes it is.

[–]JohnDoeNuts 69 points70 points ago

I've also heard the phrase being used to describe a situation where 4 people all converge on the same stop sign designated intersection, and everyone sits there waiting for someone to go.

[–]kc7wbq 102 points103 points ago

The person on the right gets to go first, duh!

[–]rook218 35 points36 points ago

4 people on a four way intersection.

I need some help finding the corners on my circle, you might be just the person for the job.

[–]JonnyRichter 83 points84 points ago

I think you got whooshed, friend.

[–]rook218 26 points27 points ago

I considered that, but it's a risk a man has to take.

[–]Cougarlax15 1 point2 points ago

I believe you like he kottonmouth kings?

[–]JonnyRichter 4 points5 points ago

I gave them a listen after I found out he and I have the same name. I like Tangerine Sky; that's about it.

[–]Cougarlax15 4 points5 points ago

Oh wow. I thought you made this your name because you liked them. That's pretty cool that you have the same name though. Their new song cruzin is pretty good too though.

[–]idntwntppl2knw2 4 points5 points ago

blocked it in your country

I'm now sad.

[–]lutzj 7 points8 points ago

The real Canadian standoff >.>

[–]Mystikilla 3 points4 points ago

I saw one of them earlier in a class. Two students sitting next to each other both thought get got picked to answer a question after they tried to respond there was a good minute of "Ladies first, no you first" before the teacher just continued the lecture.

[–]G0VERNMENT 0 points1 point ago

At that point it is a matter of who has the biggest balls.

[–]generic_0 0 points1 point ago

Must be the philosophers all driving home after dining together.

[–]Jonny_Watts 8 points9 points ago

And then all four cars inch forward at the same time and slam the brakes.

[–]Sriad 4 points5 points ago

This is closer to a Canadian Standoff because no one is trying to go first.

[–]Versatyle07 4 points5 points ago

That's a Portland standoff

[–]ismo420 1 point2 points ago

It's the guy with the gun rack of course.

[–]thexfiles81 0 points1 point ago

We call that Minnesota Nice.

[–]rjhelms 0 points1 point ago

In Toronto, I heard it used to describe a situation where two people come towards each other on a side street that is normally wide enough for two cars, but only has room for one because of snow banks on either side of the road.

Not clear who should get to pass first, and not clear where the other car should go to let them through.

[–]CrossP 12 points13 points ago

I think it's three or more

[–]fubes2000 21 points22 points ago

Truxican Standoff.

[–]Japanimekid 0 points1 point ago

si si si

[–]i_am_omega 1 point2 points ago

Ooieooieooooo... Whanq whanq whanq...

[–]chewp911 0 points1 point ago

or Reservoir Dogs

[–]YoungFoeBreaker 0 points1 point ago

Actually amigo, down here we just call it a standoff...

[–]dnmty 164 points165 points ago

Very common at the entrance of Tim Horton's

[–]reallife31415day 71 points72 points ago

Proper etiquette is for the person on the side the door opens on to go last. In most places this has the effect of letting the person on the inside leave before the new person enters. If there is no door/a sliding door/ect, the person leaving goes first.

tl;dr Dooriquette, person leaving goes first

[–]Frailed 14 points15 points ago

I don't know how to go through a doorway any other way. If you go first you just get in the way.

[–]Jonny_Watts 5 points6 points ago

Subway car style

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 0 points1 point ago

Many New Yorkers still fail to understand this.

[–]FrunkyMcNorman 2 points3 points ago

Having had these standoffs both in and outside many a Tim Horton's, I believe the most practical approach is to go with whichever way the door swings, as it's difficult to hold the door for somebody if it swings out towards them.

Edit: reread your comment more carefully, you are correct sir. Sorry.

[–]txmadison 0 points1 point ago

Of course it's difficult with that attitude.

[–]ZombiePilot15 2 points3 points ago

I feel like a dick now because of all the times I've done the opposite of this.

[–]Rhynocerous 1 point2 points ago

But what if it's cold out and everyone wants to be inside for a long time

[–]ceakay 17 points18 points ago

As a Canadian, I don't understand what you mean by 'cold'.

[–]_xiphiaz 1 point2 points ago

What then if you are male and leaving the building with outwardly opening door and a female wanting to go in? Etiquette paradox.

[–]Ceejae 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't really make sense for door etiquette to apparently always apply like this, for a number of reasons.

[–]thatnewjunksmell 1 point2 points ago

I was thinking "door etiquette" and that sounds like Dorito kit. And that's like make your own Doritos - which sounds awesome. And yes, of course you can have some of my home made Doritos.

[–]Ryan_Grywa 1 point2 points ago

I dislike how every building doesn't build their doors to all open outwards...

[–]canadian028 0 points1 point ago

Tim Hortons is superior to Starbucks in every way!

[–]1919[S] 93 points94 points ago

[–]DoctorWombat 145 points146 points ago

Hey, I'm the author of this comic, thanks for linking to it!

I have a small request, if I may, if you could link directly to the page in the future. I know it may not seem like much difference, but I love drawing these comics and those few extra pageviews will enable me to do more of these, more often. Don't worry -- the server can handle the reddit effect (mostly).

I hope you can take this into consideration. Regardless, thanks for the link back.

[–]1919[S] 19 points20 points ago

Noted, thanks!

[–]tehcharizard 10 points11 points ago

You honestly probably get more hits from the imgur link and mention than you would from the direct link. A lot of redditors basically scroll past anything that isn't an imgur link.

[–]DoctorWombat 5 points6 points ago

Hmm, that's a good point. Time for an experiment..

[–]CoinSlot 1 point2 points ago

As long as the source gets upvoted to the top you should be good.

[–]Versatyle07 2 points3 points ago

This is the first comic to make me laugh in a long while!

[–]Goosegoose135 2 points3 points ago

Are you Filipino? I thoroughly enjoyed the Filipino stereotype comic.

[–]DoctorWombat 1 point2 points ago

Yep! Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

[–]loconet 2 points3 points ago

That was the most polite request for linking I have ever seen. Let me do some resarch...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR.. He currently lives with an overweight cat in Vancouver, Canada.

Oh.

[–]SocietalReject 2 points3 points ago

I'm glad to see you're back to drawing. You've been sorely missed this past year.

[–]ceakay 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, I pissed myself laughing at Richmond, BC!

</bookmark>

[–]bozoskeleton 1 point2 points ago

Hey thank you for that dog comic. I'm sure you've heard it a million times over by now, but that was a fantastic piece.

[–]GPadraic 1 point2 points ago

Dude my family is from Canada and you seriously had me cracking up even after a 13 hour day. I don't know why you do what you do, but if it is for the lulz, lulz achieved sir / Madame.

[–]thescientist1337 57 points58 points ago

I thought this was a Canadian Standoff

[–]Teusaurus 27 points28 points ago

Or this.

[–]thegreatstranger 23 points24 points ago

The fact that those two teams are in United States is kind of ironic.

[–]TrackZero 30 points31 points ago

The majority of players on NHL teams are composed of Canadians. So it still works. ;)

[–]jibbybonk 15 points16 points ago

We do like our hockey. Although there are no Canadian NHL players this year :(

[–]prmaster23 0 points1 point ago

Although there are no Canadian NHL players this year :(

What? Why?

[–]Vinicelli 17 points18 points ago

Because there are no NHL players...

[–]notanotherpyr0 4 points5 points ago

I had suppressed that for almost a week. Now RAGE!!!

AND THERE IS A FUCKING HURRICANE SO I CAN'T GET ENOUGH BOOZE TO SUPPRESS IT AGAIN!

AND THE CAROLINA HURRICANES WON A CHAMPIONSHIP AND THEIR FANBASE DIDN'T APPRECIATE IT ENOUGH! SO MUCH RAGE!

[–]sertman 10 points11 points ago

cheer up lil nigga everythings gonna be alright

[–]nanew 4 points5 points ago

Bettman...

[–]CoughTunt 0 points1 point ago

Meh, it's closer 50% now I'm fairly certain. Then around 25% are from the US and the rest are mostly from Sweden, Czech Republic, Russia, Finland, and Slovakia.

[–]DukeCanada 0 points1 point ago

60

[–]BrelanAllin 1 point2 points ago

50% of the players 60% of the penalty minutes. sounds about right.

[–]Metalock 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, the two players fighting in the photo, Adam McQuaid and Brian Sutherby, are both Canadian.

[–]Canadian_in_Canada 0 points1 point ago

That's a square off.

[–]h3rpad3rp 9 points10 points ago

I'm Canadian, and in this situation I think the person not holding the door should go first, otherwise there is some awkward walking past each other while transferring the door holding responsibility.

[–]tricky3737 96 points97 points ago

I'm Canadian, and this is fully accurate. I experienced it today and it's not unusual

[–]escozzia 46 points47 points ago

As a Mexican-Canadian, whenever this happens I just shoot the other guy

[–]Drutarg 19 points20 points ago

As an American, I experience plenty of Canadian standoffs throughout my day.

[–]AriBBCP 11 points12 points ago

you've noticed the "slow invasion" then?

[–]chyp 2 points3 points ago

The Canadian invasion of 2012 will be known as the most polite invasion in history.

[–]dysrhythmic 3 points4 points ago

I'm not Canadian but somehow i end up in this "Canadian stand-off" situation quite often as the one more polite... I think I'm gonna move.

[–]monkeedude1212 3 points4 points ago

I'd say I experience it at least once a day.

[–]windwaterfireearth 0 points1 point ago

ugh me too... it really happens far too often

[–]LittlePinkMoose 1 point2 points ago

I want to move to Canada.

[–]tellMyBossHesWrong 7 points8 points ago

This is incorrect. A Canadian wouldn't wear shoes inside the house!!!

[–]JimmiesSoftlyRustle 4 points5 points ago

You Americans actually wear shoes inside the house huh? That boggles my mind.

[–]papageorgio120 29 points30 points ago

Then one Canadian finally makes the decision and apologizes after walking through the doorway.

[–]anthropogenic 22 points23 points ago

This is exactly what happens all the damn time. I usually end up being the one to go first because while my Canadian sensibilities say to let the other person go I can't waste the time to stand around in every stinking doorway.

[–]savagefox 7 points8 points ago

Agreed. I also find it becomes more awkward the longer both people wait so I usually just go first. But always apologize.

[–]DukeCanada 5 points6 points ago

You guys are bad at this, the person who's holding the door always goes last!

[–]anthropogenic 0 points1 point ago

I don't think you run into enough of the stereotypical canadians then. At my university when I hold open a door people will stand there and wait until I go through. I'm not talking like 4-5 seconds either I'm talking like full awkward as hell 20 second pauses that I don't have time for between classes. This is what i get being an american in canada, I just can't do it.

[–]Ihadacow 5 points6 points ago

I'm terrible at this. I just don't want to be rude.

[–]DomoInMySoup 2 points3 points ago

Shit ok so I was walking out of school today and I saw a kid walking in towards the same door, but the windows are tinted which makes it difficult to see in but not out, and he was texting. So he got to the door just before me but hesitated to open, and I'm there standing on the inside of it, and I can't open it cuz he's right fucking there blocking the door, and then he looks up at me, opens the door, and we both apologize before I walk through and we go on our merry way.

[–]cseckshun 6 points7 points ago

Haha has been a problem for me many a time, except for when its 5 minutes until they stop serving breakfast sandwiches at timmies... then its every man for himself

[–]RyanSmithN 6 points7 points ago

A Canadian standoff is actually a real thing, but it's where 2 or more people are at an intersection and everyone is offering someone else the right of way, meanwhile no one is moving. The longest Canadian standoff on record actually took place in Milwaukee in 1995 and lasted over 4 minutes.

[–]0xFFE3 2 points3 points ago

There's a 4-way stop down the road from my apt., and I can assure you they last much longer than 4 minutes.

[–]blueandwhite_knight 3 points4 points ago

i'm in canada. yesterday it was snowing, today we have a hurricane...i don't have the energy to get mad at anyone

[–]lolrsk8s_2 24 points25 points ago

[–]Redemptions 10 points11 points ago

I thought a Canadian standoff is when 2 or more people were at a 4 way stop and everyone insisted the other person go.

[–]rasputine 9 points10 points ago

That is almost the exact same situation as in the doorway scenario.

[–]Clive_Stillman 3 points4 points ago

I actually run into this problem all the time here in Canada. So awkward.

[–]VslachaTurbo Sloth 7 points8 points ago

And a French standoff where three people all wave white flags simultaneously.

[–]scifiwoman 5 points6 points ago

Why is Reddit taking the piss out of Canadians so much recently. Sorry for swearing (I'm English)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

GOOD GOLLY, COULD WE GET A NSFW TAG? Sorry for swearing (I'm white)

[–]TheRanchoChupacabraj 1 point2 points ago

Isn't the majority of Reddit traffic coming from Canadians? I remember seeing something about that a few months ago.

[–]TheCxC 2 points3 points ago

Automatic doors are pretty bad for we Canadians too. I always wind up saying "thank you" to the air by habit. Same for Skytrain doors and the like.

[–]FuzzyNutters 2 points3 points ago

I do this on the daily. I will kill you with kindness.

[–]sluttycupcakes 2 points3 points ago

Living in a bad part of Canada, I'm not too fond of these stereotypes.

[–]Betrivent 0 points1 point ago

While I usually hate Canadian jokes, this is, in fact, what ACTUALLY happens. Mostly at 4 way stops.

[–]jacobtaylor1987 1 point2 points ago

As an Australian who has worked with both Americans and Canadians: Canadians aren't any more polite than anyone else. Americans are just kind of dicks, haha.

[–]Dunskees 0 points1 point ago

This is entirely true. No joke this happens to me about 4 times a week

[–]ShootsToKill 7 points8 points ago

Waiting for obligatory "American" standoff... Fatties in buggies.

[–]workguy 6 points7 points ago

As a Canadian, I have had this happen to me far to often.

[–]HerbyDrinks 11 points12 points ago

I don't think Canadians are all that nice, met some at PAX few years back and they where being real dicks about us cutting infront of them in line. Talk about rude.

[–]c_hand 18 points19 points ago

Man I REALLY can't tell if this is a joke! The internet broke my sarcasm radar.

[–]Claptrap8 7 points8 points ago

..I cant tell if you can't tell if this is a joke! Goddammit

[–]goodbrowngravy 0 points1 point ago

Canadians rock! Lovely people.

[–]HeresJonnie 0 points1 point ago

As a Canadian, it's easier to count the times this hasn't happened.

[–]Destator 2 points3 points ago

As a Canadian it is sad I see less and less of these standoffs in the big cities.

[–]LlamaLlamaPingPong 0 points1 point ago

Not all big cities, just the ones that have a smaller Canadian to foreigners ratio.

[–]waltztheplank 1 point2 points ago

I am Canadian, and this actually happens to often for it to be comfortable for me. I hate it.

[–]liquidxlax 2 points3 points ago

American stand-off - last doughnut in the box

[–]zbx7 1 point2 points ago

That is so true.

How many times a day does this happen to people? Happens to me all the time.

[–]warpath79 0 points1 point ago

So what would be an American stand off?

[–]writekindofnonsense 7 points8 points ago

I assume a mix of both, you meet someone in a doorway and if they don't move you shoot them.

[–]Dammit81 3 points4 points ago

Two cars pulling into a Mcdonalds drive-thru at the same time and both are refusing to budge

[–]Evan_the_Young 0 points1 point ago

The one who was to leave should go first, as the other person is already holding the door open. It would be terribly rude to try and hold an already open door at the place where it is hardest to hold to keep open, for a person who much then go around you, AND a door that could slap them in the ass at any given moment.

Either that, or I am a strange man who holds door open regardless of my position relative to the ideal spot on the door door.

[–]le_mexicano 0 points1 point ago

I am mexican and I can assure you that 99% of mexican people dont carry guns with them.

[–]Rowanshark -1 points0 points ago

you forgot Truxican.

[–]ridingmissdaisy 0 points1 point ago

I'd argue but I've already done this twice today..

[–]Smilular 0 points1 point ago

I think vampires would find Canada as a dream spot, we'd always invite them in.

[–]shug7272 -1 points0 points ago

Are Canadians really that nice? Because rude people piss me off, which makes me an asshole in public. I dont want to drag my trashy ass up there and ruin it but I am sure if I was around people this polite all day I could relax and smile... gooday mate and all that.

[–]LlamaLlamaPingPong 0 points1 point ago

Yes. We really are that nice. Even when we're rude we still apologize.

[–]buck7131 0 points1 point ago

I love how Canada has a nice reputation

[–]gyro12 -1 points0 points ago

You know you've been engineering too much when you were expecting these.

[–]Elbeez -1 points0 points ago

As a Canadian, I can say I have one of these at least twice a week.

[–]oneslyfox 0 points1 point ago

Until someone goes "Close the door eh? You're letting all the cold air in!"

[–]vivvav 0 points1 point ago

We Americans have sitoffs.

[–]FatDIck9 0 points1 point ago

[–]TheZenji 1 point2 points ago

American stand-off, guy in a tank bearing down on a cowering man.

[–]SPENmasterflex 0 points1 point ago

I can honestly say I had a “Canadian Standoff” at the bank today. He wouldn’t budge, I gave in...

[–]bd10123 0 points1 point ago

cheer up emo kid.

[–]Nukor 0 points1 point ago

Does that mean an American standoff is one person holding a door open while the other points a gun at him?

[–]Santa_Claauz -1 points0 points ago

I thought Mexican stand off had 3 people

[–]kungfukai 0 points1 point ago

Looks like we've got a Mexican standoff...

Only we ain't got no Mexicans.

[–]essbeck 0 points1 point ago

[–]restrictionenzyme 0 points1 point ago

You know what's in between those two? An american standoff.

[–]Apotheosis91 0 points1 point ago

I... I can't even deny it

[–]pourspellur -1 points0 points ago

There should be an American standoff in the middle with two fat people fighting over a burger.

[–]OneRomaines 0 points1 point ago

I actually got into a bout of the "After yoo's" earlier today. I'm not sure how I feel about being so accurately fit to such a specific sterotype.

[–]Fzero21 0 points1 point ago

I tend to open the door for others no matter what side were on just hold it and step behind the door.

[–]JeremyKean 0 points1 point ago

And a Newfie firing squad is where a circle of people all fire guns at a target in the center.

[–]couldbekidding -1 points0 points ago

the "American Standoff" should be two fat people with forks in their hands, both looking at the same piece of meat

[–]Vranak 0 points1 point ago

As a Canadian, I wonder if this steady flow of posts telling the world how polite we are is only making them angrier at us for setting the bar so high and thinking too highly of ourselves.

[–]shriekingofnothing 0 points1 point ago

Apply the Canadian standoff to drivers at an intersection in Washington, US. It drives me nuts that no one seems to know the right of way. They just insist that you go first. Of course, that's better than someone tailgating or cutting me off.

[–]Luitpold 0 points1 point ago

People are like Canadians in Oregon

[–]pmazza 0 points1 point ago

JUST FUCKING GO <---NY standoff

[–]strig 0 points1 point ago

This actually happened with me and an RCMP officer this past week at a restaurant.

[–]otakukitty 1 point2 points ago

I do this so much! The Canadian one not the Mexican one.. Ill stop talking.

[–]peewafe 0 points1 point ago

Take off hoser

[–]EnjoyMyDownvote 1 point2 points ago

The guy on the right should go first. If the guy on the left went first, the door would close on the other guy.

[–]Solar424 0 points1 point ago

What's an American Standoff then? 2 guys opening a door with guns drawn?

[–]ThePlanner 1 point2 points ago

I once nearly died of dehydration and fatigue trying to amicably end a classic Canadian Standoff. "After you!" I kept begging him. How on earth could I go first? It'd be rude.

[–]quantumduckling 0 points1 point ago

Sorry!

[–]Feyo777 1 point2 points ago

I'm a mexican living in Canada and i can confirm this.

[–]zeroskie 0 points1 point ago

side splitting laughter.

[–]xxJORDISxx 1 point2 points ago

it sure beats the French Canadian Standoff

[–]Oddin85 -1 points0 points ago

And that's why they have revolving doors in Canada

[–]brokendimension 0 points1 point ago

So what comes in between?

[–]babypixee -1 points0 points ago

I hate canadian standoffs, I get in one about 3 times a day.

[–]Big_Boyd 1 point2 points ago

That isn't a mexican standoff.

[–]HeatherMarMal -1 points0 points ago

I had a Canadian standoff with an old man at a Tim Hortons for a good 5 minutes. In the winter. We were both wearing toques. We also apologized once we finally figured out how to get away from it. It was so Canadian it hurt. Literally, my toes were numb.

[–]Sporlos -1 points0 points ago

This is actually true. I'm sorry, you first, no you.

[–]GodricRyuzaki 0 points1 point ago

I wish I lived in Canada

[–]eliguillao 1 point2 points ago

[–]whatismoo 1 point2 points ago

a mexican standoff is between three individuals, not two

[–]megacookie 0 points1 point ago

Ha, I used to do the anti-Canadian Standoff. Someone had opened the door for themselves, and may or may not have held it open an extra second for me. I speed up, align myself slightly sideways and slip through the undisturbed door like a ninja, while the person behind me now has to deal with a more-closed-than-expected door. I later realized this was a bit dickish.

[–]m4tthew 0 points1 point ago

[–]Vajazzler 1 point2 points ago

These pale in comparison to a Utah Standoff.

[–]r2chartouni 0 points1 point ago

By the way I am Mexican and have no clue this situation was called this way until inglorious basterds. Any clue about its origin?

[–]Gemuese11 -1 points0 points ago

its stereotypical and kinda racist, i like it :3

[–]The_Spectator 0 points1 point ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't guns illegal in Mexico? Although, the illegal guns are on the rage right now. But still. I'd say this was a cowboy thing...which used Mexican culture. And I've made a 360..... Never mind carry on.

[–]Shishakli -1 points0 points ago

This image makes me laugh simply because after moving to Canada I'm surprised to notice that #1, Canadian's don't say thanks when you hold the door for them, and #2, when you thank a Canadian for holding the door for you they are noticeably shocked and maybe a little embarrassed...

[–]JCongo 0 points1 point ago

I remember when I was younger my dad was waiting at an intersection and had a standoff with a pedestrian for who went first. First my dad waved, then the pedestrian waved, then they both tried to go at the same time and immediately stopped, then it was back to square one. Repeat about 4 more times.

[–]opie92 0 points1 point ago

In America we have eat offs

[–]D1iTiger 0 points1 point ago

That has got to be a liquor store

[–]girlfight -1 points0 points ago

Canadian here...had an episode of road rage at a woman this morning because we were both trying to let each other by and neither would go first. I finally pulled out with an angry thank-you wave.

[–]JDogish -1 points0 points ago

As a Canadian I can confirm this. It happened today. Twice.

[–]logicalthinker1 0 points1 point ago

Guys get it?! Canadians are polite and are always apologizing!! Guys it's a funny joke! You've probably never heard it before!

[–]Beardcore1982[!] 0 points1 point ago
