[–]mofoqin 207 points208 points ago

Do we know they are all from slain soldiers and not just surrendered equipment?

[–]Quieonienoyaz 152 points153 points ago

I'm like...99% sure these were forfeited over in surrender. I'm also not entirely sure about New York's Grand Central Station either. I don't know where it took place, but stacking them in New York isn't ringing any bells.

[–]totemair[S] 30 points31 points ago

[–]DontMakeMeDownvote 174 points175 points ago

So, they are captured helmets. Not necessarily those of slain soldiers.

[–]Flapjack_ 12 points13 points ago

Right I mean they could have just found a literal truckload in a warehouse

[–]Superdonaldo26 13 points14 points ago

but he was number 1!

[–]DizeazedFly 2 points3 points ago

Yeah. Some of them might have been slain, but most were captured/swapped. My grandfather came home with a couple helmets he managed to trade with surrendered forces because he though they looked cool.

[–]sirjash 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, they look cool

[–]fernguts 31 points32 points ago

1) They were not necessarily from slain soldiers.

2) It's Grand Central Terminal, not Station

Maybe it's time for /r/ShittyHistoryPorn???

[–]ALoudMouthBaby 2 points3 points ago

Maybe it's time for /r/ShittyHistoryPorn???

I think /r/historyporn is already serving the demographic that would enjoy this type of thing quite well.

[–]HacksawDecapitation 0 points1 point ago

Neat, had no idea that was a thing. Thanks for the link :)

[–]no-ez -5 points-4 points ago

JUICY SAUUUUUUCE!

[–]urquan 67 points68 points ago

I'm counting 56 helmets at the base, if the pyramid were full that would be 60116 helmets, it probably wasn't however.

[–]tugb0at 21 points22 points ago

How'd you get that number?

[–]secretsuperhero 245 points246 points ago

I'm guessing he used math.

[–]famouslastturds 42 points43 points ago

nobody really knows how it works....

[–]Earth_Lad 18 points19 points ago

Just like birds. What are birds? No one really knows.

[–]joshy1234 11 points12 points ago

Wings flap up, wings flap down. You can't explain that.

[–]moofdivr 5 points6 points ago

Birds are a miracle. So are magnets.

[–]SoulOnFire1 0 points1 point ago

Water Water what has thou done?

[–]darkevilemu 1 point2 points ago

For those who haven't seen it

Skip to about 1:50 for the bird reference.

[–]daroons 1 point2 points ago

thants.

[–]ICouldEatAKnobAtNite 4 points5 points ago

Math. Not even once.

[–]colmd5142 0 points1 point ago

Math addiction is nothing to joke about.

[–]weber20 16 points17 points ago

[–]jedify 15 points16 points ago

Don't downvote the guy for attempting to educate himself. Come on, reddit

[–]TILnothingg 7 points8 points ago

theres a formula for that

[–]tugb0at 8 points9 points ago

That's what I was getting at. How would i do this on a calculator without it taking ages?

[–]elnino2k10 17 points18 points ago

56

Σ n2

n=1

[–]Meepzors 1 point2 points ago

n=3, doesn't come to a point.

[–]Sleekery 0 points1 point ago

I don't get what you mean. n=3 means 3x3, on top of which is 2x2 (each one covering a quarter of the 3x3's central helmet), on top of which is 1x1.

[–]Meepzors 1 point2 points ago

I meant that if you look at the image, it stops at about a 3x3 layer, on top of which is the statue. It doesn't end in a single 1x1 layer.

Makes a difference of a whopping 5 helmets out of 60000, so it's not like it actually matters, but yeah :)

[–]SilversunPickups 0 points1 point ago

He saying the top is three by three. As in the pyramid wasn't complete.

[–]bizkut 0 points1 point ago

I think they mean that it doesn't look like the pyramid comes to a 1x1 point at the top, and thus is missing the top 2 rows, or something like that.

[–]fastonia 3 points4 points ago

wolframalpha is the shit...

[–]LawrenciuM94 0 points1 point ago

1/3 x Area of the base x the height is the formula for the volume of a square based pyramid, not sure how he got the height though

[–]Karnaugh_Map 1 point2 points ago

Notice how each subsequent level has one less helmet across.

[–]thelibrarina 0 points1 point ago

But that gives you the slant height, not the height from the top of the pyramid down to the center of the base, which is what you need in order to calculate height.

EDIT: I just did like 20 minutes worth of math only to come up with a ~ 10,000 helmet difference between the volume function and the sum of the squares of each level. So I'm not going to subject you to an English major's fumbling attempts at geometry. :-/

[–]ImOffendedByThat 0 points1 point ago

sqrt(a2 - (b2 /4))?

[–]TILnothingg 2 points3 points ago

i got a 53 in grade 12 calculus. i'm the wrong person to be asking lol.

[–]jamesz5000 -1 points0 points ago

One-third of half the base times the height times some squares and stuff.

[–]robboywonder 2 points3 points ago

who says it's solid helmets? could just be a shell.

[–]Blacksburg 0 points1 point ago

You beat me to the math. Thanks.

[–]uhhhclem 65 points66 points ago

Captured, not slain.

[–]Hyro0o0 43 points44 points ago

Dunno if it adds anything to it, but I cleaned it up a little bit.

[–]paleo_dragon 3 points4 points ago

Wow much better thanks

[–]AdamRGrey 14 points15 points ago

Yeah it's pretty surreal that one guy would own that many helmets.

[–]RipTatermen 4 points5 points ago

That's why ze Germans lost, some dude was hogging all the head protection.

[–]anarchistica 107 points108 points ago

It's sort of a tradition in the US.

[–]philistic53 105 points106 points ago

Man I hate that picture.

[–]TheRanchoChupacabraj 56 points57 points ago

-Sent from my hamburger.

[–]Sublem0n 34 points35 points ago

I'm pretty sure they did this because the US realized that the American Buffalo was the major source of food for the Native Americans, and pretty much paid for the skulls

[–]anarchistica 56 points57 points ago

Yup, genocide.

[–]Ahhuatl 34 points35 points ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted for this. The United States' deliberate attempt to deplete the food sources for the peoples of the plains is well known.

[–]anarchistica 14 points15 points ago

Judging from earlier discussion, many people actually don't know what genocide is.

[–]Ahhuatl 16 points17 points ago

Or they don't want to accept the idea that the United States had a genocidal policy.

[–]VastCloudiness -3 points-2 points ago

Brutal disregard for and purposeful slaughter of people of a different culture was hardly an American-only thing.

[–]Ahhuatl 9 points10 points ago

At what point did I say it was? I don't understand why Americans can't just admit these things and reflect on their nation accordingly. Always this defensive, "point the finger elsewhere" silliness.

[–]VastCloudiness -4 points-3 points ago

I didn't say you did. But that's the sentiment that is almost always contained within these threads. A whole bunch of "America killed these guys, and that's awful, America is bad because of it". And it is systematically ignored that not only was it a while ago, America was far from the only one to do such a thing. Because it's an anti-America circlejerk and that's about it.

So I voiced it earlier rather than later on.

[–]Ahhuatl 0 points1 point ago

I didn't say you did. But that's the sentiment that is almost always contained within these threads

Or more simply: you posted with prejudice.

A whole bunch of "America killed these guys, and that's awful, America is bad because of it".

If genocide makes a country bad, then yes the United States is bad.

And it is systematically ignored that not only was it a while ago, America was far from the only one to do such a thing.

The fact that a crime happened in the past or that other people have committed a crime does not detract from how bad a crime was.

Because it's an anti-America circlejerk and that's about it.

I have a feeling people's anti-American sentiments have a lot more to do with the way some Americans minimize the wrong-doings of their country rather than the wrong-doings themselves.

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2011/05/09/genocide-by-other-means-u-s-army-slaughtered-buffalo-in-plains-indian-wars-30798

There is a good boo in there too, I was tempted to just that cite it but I had a feeling no one would accept that.

[–]moofdivr -1 points0 points ago

I'm fairly certain the buffalo were killed off en masse by the railroad companies because their migration and grazing was a constant disruption of train routes. I'm sure killing off the native's food source was viewed as a nice side effect by the early settlers, but I'm almost positive the pic is from a railroad expedition killing them for the aforementioned reason.

[–]Ahhuatl 4 points5 points ago

I'm fairly certain the buffalo were killed off en masse by the railroad companies because they're migration and grazing was a constant disruption of the train routes.

That was a component of the bison's decline but not the major one. The transcontinental railroads weren't completed until the 1870s by which time the extent of bison populations had shrunk dramatically.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Extermination_of_bison_to_1889.svg&page=1

I'm sure killing off the natives food source was a nice result as well for the early settlers

It was intentional.

I'm almost positive the pic is from a railroad expedition killing them for the aforementioned reason.

This article would seem to indicate otherwise:

[–]duncanmarshall 8 points9 points ago

I'm so glad they blurred out the human genitals, otherwise this picture might have been offensive.

[–]moofdivr 8 points9 points ago

Damn, we are dope at stacking helmets, skulls, people, etc

[–]diegodlv -1 points0 points ago

Their asses are offensive to me. Goddamn terrorists.

[–]DolphinGirl1120 2 points3 points ago

What is that picture of?

[–]Sigh_No_More 3 points4 points ago

Bison skulls.

[–]SpacemanSpiff56 5 points6 points ago

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS

[–]D14BL0 3 points4 points ago

Those are some weird-looking Nazi skulls.

I saw it.

Looks like I'm subscribing to /r/HistoryPorn.

The fact that it was posted three times in one month, is irrelevant. It had zero exposure, and I'm glad this was reposted so I could see it without surfing through piles of worthless /r/pics.

[–]fool217 9 points10 points ago

this would be on r/wtf if it was in germany and those were the helmets of american soldiers

[–]galient5 -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah, but not if it had been almost 100 years and America was being the belligerent asshole.

[–]elkku 2 points3 points ago

Did they ship them all to new york from europe?

edit: spelt work, not york.

[–]spamncheese 10 points11 points ago

No, they were collected from the famous "Battle of 4th Avenue".

[–]noamXchomsky 0 points1 point ago

Yes

[–]elkku 0 points1 point ago

I know there was no Battle of 4th Ave, just seems rather wasteful. "Look at that then, brought back helmets we did." "Oh, I never noticed that before." "And, we made a pyramid out of them" "I myself woud have never thought that one up, now would I?" "Clearly, that's why we're the military and you're the civilian."

[–]crwlz 3 points4 points ago

I bet you can't find someone without a hat.

[–]randrews 12 points13 points ago

Well, other than the thousands of German soldiers whose hats are in that pyramid.

[–]skarface6 2 points3 points ago

you're allowed to have 2 hats

[–]Citisol 3 points4 points ago

1918 theme song: AMERICA! Very well!

[–]davesidious -1 points0 points ago

Disgusting.

[–]Otterfan 4 points5 points ago

It would be disgusting if it were true.

[–]annihilus813 15 points16 points ago

Why? It's a stark reminder of the cost of war, on both us and our opponents. Perhaps we have been "protected" from the true costs of war for too long. It helps to explain the increased militarism of the US and our involvement in global conflict zones throughout the world.

[–]Dyolf_Knip 31 points32 points ago

It's a stark reminder of the cost of war

Was that's its intention? Or was it basically a pyramid of skulls? "See here what happens to those who oppose me"?

[–]annihilus813 5 points6 points ago

It was probably each of those things to different people. I wasn't there to see it for myself, or to ask others how they felt.

[–]bam6470 4 points5 points ago

This string of replys has made me understand why people enjoy art.

[–]annihilus813 0 points1 point ago

Subjectivism, baby!

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

It's a sign that military and might are better than holding the upper ground. It's a statement of jingoism and no better than putting heads on pikes of the medieval era.

[–]FordSVT1 16 points17 points ago

It's helmets from soldiers who surrendered. Please, try to contain your false outrage.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

At which point did I say any of those helmets belonged to someone killed in the war? I didn't.

The very imagery of stacking helmets this way is militaristic, jingoistic and no better than putting heads on pikes. It is not the same as, but it's no better than.

Also, I'm not outraged, stop trying to portray me as some angry individual to reduce the effectiveness of my message. It's poor form to be so presumptuous.

[–]HashRunningRapist 2 points3 points ago

Holding the upper ground means letting Europe fall to the Germans and letting German naval forces devastate civilian shipping? You have a weird sense of upper ground then.

[–]Fuzzzylilmanpeach 0 points1 point ago

Well it is better because we didn't actually cut off any ones heads.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

People still died en mass in the war. War trophies are never good.

[–]davesidious 11 points12 points ago

Because it is indistinguishable from a trophy collection. To portray your meaning, US helmets worn by the fallen would make far more sense.

[–]annihilus813 2 points3 points ago

I just don't agree. The lives of our enemies are a cost of war as well. Maybe it's intention was to disgust, and not to gloat about the victory. Either way, I think people should always and constantly be reminded of the cost and nature of war. Otherwise, it becomes an "easy" option for politicians and populations alike.

[–]NameTak3r 4 points5 points ago

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like there's a figure standing on top, arms raised triumphantly. Seems like gloating.

[–]annihilus813 2 points3 points ago

It's thought to be Nike, the greek goddess of victory.

[–]AKA_Sotof -1 points0 points ago

No. It is just fuel to the fire that was WW2. It is a collection of skulls, nothing more, nothing less.

[–]unholyrage 1 point2 points ago

Honestly, if those were American helmets, reddit would flip shit and whine about it not being in /r/WTF. Have some compassion, some of us are German.

[–]annihilus813 -1 points0 points ago

Funny. I thought I was the one advocating compassion. God bless the Internets.

[–]ItinerantDegenerate 0 points1 point ago

Better then scalps or their heads with the genitalia stuffed into their mouths - both of which are older practices.

[–]Stall0ne 0 points1 point ago

My exact reaction.

How did they even get them to stay together like that? Wow

[–]Elemmakil 26 points27 points ago

"Made in Germany"

[–]The_Ultimate 0 points1 point ago

You ever used Gorilla glue?

[–]camp_anawanna 1 point2 points ago

It's probally just one or two hats deep. I imagine there were holes drilled into the hats and onto a sloped piece of wood to keep it all together.

[–]thepeoplesidiot 2 points3 points ago

This looks like the cover art for a shitty metal band and I love it.

[–]PollyWollyDoodleDumb 1 point2 points ago

What is the statue of on the top?

[–]ImaginaryEvents 4 points5 points ago

Looks like Nike.

[–]rexington_ 1 point2 points ago

I think that's Columbia

[–]jerisho 0 points1 point ago

How many skulls are there, Guesses?

[–]losesauce 0 points1 point ago

This is pretty fucked up

[–]freakonature 1 point2 points ago

It's not slain soldiers, it's captured soldiers.

[–]Geirkrak 0 points1 point ago

This would make an awesome album cover.

[–]Shadw21 0 points1 point ago

So where are the helmets now?

[–]sadisticsam 0 points1 point ago

And not a single hair was seen that day.

[–]Phog_of_War 0 points1 point ago

That's alot of Sthalhelms.

[–]rabbitclyro 0 points1 point ago

I think its important to note when commenting on photos such as this that the German soldiers killed during WW1 were not evil. They were not fighting in aid of an intensely immoral ideology such as Nazism rather fighting as a result of a convoluted treaty system put in place by their rulers. It was a real for king and country kind of justification for war rather than a we must fight to ensure our country can go on killing puppies and blotting out the sun so no rainbows may ever form.

[–]urnotoriginal 0 points1 point ago

Love to see what this photo would look like if it was superimposed on the same spot today at Grand Central Station.

[–]supn9 0 points1 point ago

Dont see this in history books.. Wonder why??

[–]CuriousCursor 0 points1 point ago

Didn't Genghis Khan do something like this with skulls back in the day?

[–]funkytoad 0 points1 point ago

I wonder what happened to these helmets, and where they wound up.

[–]GermanBro -1 points0 points ago

It's shit like this that makes me a nazi and have the feelings that I do. (I'm German)

[–]LOLumad1013 0 points1 point ago

Why the fuck do we not do things like this anymore?

[–]realigion 0 points1 point ago

For one, our enemies are too poor for helmets.

[–]souv 0 points1 point ago

Welcome to America, where Murder is Glorified and an essential part of the culture. If Americans aren't murdering others, you can bet they will pick some random small country to start murdering soon enough.

[–]Stewiecasserole 0 points1 point ago

The original tag says they are "captured" helmets....not slain. http://pinterest.com/estine2522/vintage-love-and-history/

[–]ScrappyDoo998 0 points1 point ago

Jesus, that's like some crazy Aztec shit.

[–]crnkn 0 points1 point ago

Totally misread the title and thought it read "German Soldier's Heads"

[–]whileyouwereliving 0 points1 point ago

how civilised...

[–]Keyserchief 1 point2 points ago

So... we were the good guys in that one, right?

[–]Scottmk4 4 points5 points ago

Not really. There wasn't really a clear cut good guys vs. bad guys distinction in World War 1. A bunch of people just decided it was time to slaughter each other.

Because we broke the stalemate and helped France and England win the war decisively, the Allies imposed absurdly harsh terms on the Germans. Those terms led to the rise of Hitler.

The world would have been much better off if we had stayed out of the conflict entirely.

[–]NameTak3r 6 points7 points ago

To an extent. Germany had some good guys too. War sucks.

[–]onedollarbill -1 points0 points ago

Primitive

[–]Insanitys_shadow 1 point2 points ago

This seems a little like showboating

[–]ApostrophePatrol 1 point2 points ago

[–]iForkyou 0 points1 point ago

Thats just wrong.

[–]undergroundPOP -1 points0 points ago

Just a friendly reminder to the world... If you're not on our team, we'll fuck your shit up.

[–]TerrorShark 3 points4 points ago

"If you're not on our team, we'll join the war near the end and take all the credit for beating you"

[–]Fuzzzylilmanpeach 2 points3 points ago

And also give everyone fighting you lots of money.

[–]Pertinacious 2 points3 points ago

USA! USA! USA!

[–]rscott89 -1 points0 points ago

Had the Russians stayed in then the US would not have been needed. However with the Russian withdrawal from the war the Allies would have lost, all the US did was take Russia's place and inject fresh troops and millions of dollars worth of weapons, equipment and food. Without the US the Allies would have had a much harder time winning but they didn't win just because the US came riding in on a white horse like Gandalf at Helms Deep... though I think we all agree that version of history sounds much...much better.

[–]ginja_ninja 0 points1 point ago

Because things were going so well before they got involved.
