VoluntarismFAQ

This article by Professor Roderick Long features responses to ten common objections to the idea of libertarian anarchism, and serves as a good FAQ for those interested in learning more about the philosophy. To help us author a more extensive FAQ, click here.

That would make a wicked heavy metal album cover.

[–]Ataraktika 20 points21 points ago

The bottom text says: "The US wants to save European culture from downfall. By what right?"

Thank you!

THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL LEG

[–]dihedral3 3 points4 points ago

Those...monsters...

[–]Gr8WhiteGrammarNazi 11 points12 points ago

That was not "Germany's view;" it was Nazi propaganda. I mean seriously, I can find piles of fucked-up shit from the Third Reich, but it doesn't mean the Germans believed it.

EDIT: or that the state even believed it.

[–]dkey1983[S] 2 points3 points ago

Sorry about the poor title. I didn't put a lot of thought into it.

[–]dkey1983[S] 1 point2 points ago

"Are you upset, brother?" Love it.

[–]tzan 11 points12 points ago

Uhm.. the text on the poster is not German, it's Norwegian I think. Still, awesome poster.

[–]zoink 2 points3 points ago

You are correct, but it was probably made when the Germans occupied Norway.

[–]insanityfarm 7 points8 points ago

That's the assertion in the thread on /r/wtf. I'm not sure why the OP here labeled it as "prior to WW2" when the other post clearly dates this poster from 1944.

[–]RonaldMcPaul 0 points1 point ago

OP did not deliver?

[–]tstone11 1 point2 points ago

What does it say?

[–]Gr8WhiteGrammarNazi 4 points5 points ago

The US wants to save Europe's culture from ruin.

By what right?

[–]dkey1983[S] 1 point2 points ago

Sorry, that's just what the OP labeled it as. I did not research it before reposting.

Would I be correct in interpreting the KKK hood and noose as symbols of America's horrible racism, and the Star of David loincloth as a contradictory symbol of America's "dirty Jew" population? Edit: Wait, are the jitterbugging figures in the cage meant to be caricatures of African Americans? Now I'm really confused...

Some of the other criticisms (again, if I'm interpreting correctly) of the "American ideals" of greed, vanity, and militarism are still fairly valid today.

[–]dkey1983[S] 4 points5 points ago

I think the cage of African Americans was to represent that at the heart of America was slavery and racism.

[–]insanityfarm 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure about that. If it was meant to be anti-racist it wouldn't have depicted them as charcoal-black and ape-like. The "jitterbug" label and their dancing motions seem to be a smear against "black music," the fast-paced jazz and swing that were birthed out of the spiritual songs of slaves (later evolving into rock and roll, and hip-hop). The drum, trumpet, and vinyl record would reinforce that point. I don't think the cage represents the evil of oppression, but rather the suggestion that black people are monkeys who belong in zoo cages.

The racism of the early 20th century was extremely blatant and vulgar at times. We need to view this through a lens of the culture of the era. The ape caricatures of black people don't surprise me, it's the negative depiction of the KKK hood and noose that caught me off guard, because the messages are so mixed.

[–]Denieru 3 points4 points ago

it wouldn't have depicted them as charcoal-black and ape-like

Blacks were often depicted like that back then with no racist intent.

[–]dkey1983[S] 2 points3 points ago

Agreed.

[–]ancapfreethinker 0 points1 point ago

LOL

[–]in_cogito_ergo_blegh 5 points6 points ago

The Nazi's were not what one could call intellectually consistent, but the KKK was also anti-Catholic and anti-"foreignor" in the olden days, i.e would have had historic beef with Irish, Italian and German immigrants.

[–]aletoledo[!] 13 points14 points ago

Not much has changed.

[–]muyuu 2 points3 points ago

Funny that the nazis characterised the US as a racist country.

[–]insanityfarm 2 points3 points ago

Sorry if I'm overcommenting here... I find this stuff fascinating and I'm trying to find out the truth behind the image. Too much misinformation floating around.

We should note that the poster is from 1944, actually toward the end of WWII. It was designed by Harald Damsleth, a Norwegian socialist who produced propaganda for the Nazis during the five-year German occupation of Norway. This discussion has a bunch of useful insight about it.

[–]dkey1983[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the link! They did a fantastic job of explaining it.

[–]hotclubsauce 0 points1 point ago

Isn't this exactly how AnCaps portray the USA?

[–]emfyo 0 points1 point ago

I saw an exhibit at the musuem in Chicago last year about the two world wars, it featured a lot of propaganda against the Nazi's but lacked Axis created content.

This is just about on line of what I would expect from the era, it's actually pretty tame considering what else was being published, I found it really funny as a response to the attacks they were getting and in one picture really sums up what they were using to rally against the Americans

[–]heirtoruin 0 points1 point ago

While some of it is certainly true, there seems to be more than just a little cognitive dissonance on the part of the artist.

[–]Meatball_express 0 points1 point ago

They didn't depict our enormous genitalia very accurately...

[–]Denieru 0 points1 point ago

This is a poster made by a Norweigan national socialist during the war, his name was Harald Damsleth.

[–]SerialMessiah 0 points1 point ago

I love propaganda. Funny how their view of America was pretty much spot on in a lot of respects - the opportunistic, corporatist elite which indisputably ruled this country for a century and a half now has spared no bloodshed to achieve their aims, whether that blood is American or foreign. These were assholes who told the American public, "We won't ship your sons to war!" during both World Wars while simultaneously maneuvering to do just that. These were the assholes who set today's welfare-warfare-regulatory nightmare into motion and ass fucked future generations for yesterday's sour spoils. Fuck them. I have no love for those degenerate fucks.

[–]mynewromantica 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or does that make America seem pretty awesome. Except for the racist parts.
