Soon to be dead-lift...

[–]KilgoreTroutQQ 5 points6 points ago

Hemorrhoid medicine ball.

[–]princeandin 57 points58 points ago

For those interested, she is lifting 135 pounds.

35# women's bar

25# x 2 (innermost plates)

10# x 4 (outermost and 2nd plates)

5# x 2 (3rd plates)

They are bumper plates (metal coated in rubber) and therefore less dense than their iron/steel equivalents. Those red plates in the background are likely the 45#s you may be more used to.

Weightlifting is crucially important for post-menopausal women who are much more prone to bone-loss / bone-deterioration.

Source: I'm a goddamned gym rat ya hear?

(There is a slight chance that one of those 10# bumpers is actually 15#, they are almost identical so it would be hard for me to tell)

[–]kcros10 4 points5 points ago

for those interested, she is actually deadlifting 153lbs.

source: this was a well-circuited photo in the CrossFit community. and her name is Jean.

[–]RockDrill 0 points1 point ago

Weightlifting is crucially important for post-menopausal women

That's surprising. I would have thought they'd need to stay away from exercises that would strain their bones, and do things like yoga.

[–]zaite 15 points16 points ago

The long term benefits from weight lifting include significant increases in bone strength. Someone who has lifted for most of their adult life will go into old age with much stronger bones than someone who does not. Much like anything else - as you age if you dont use it you lose it. Calcium leeching becomes a real problem. But if you are using your bone strength (lifting weight) your body is discouraged from doing so.

[–]jack_spankin 6 points7 points ago

[–]swipecardblues 6 points7 points ago

Stress leads the bone to remodel and strengthen, which is what you need for bone health.

[–]MightyGamera 0 points1 point ago

See, at first glance some months ago, there was me all warm and fuzzy thinking that there was a little old lady who could lock out 405.

Oh well. Still mad kudos to Jean.

[–]kanyeezy24 1 point2 points ago

the red plates are usually designated for 25kg or 55lbs.

for those curious. Blue=20kg, Yellow=15kg, green is sometimes 10, although i've seen black plates from 10kg down.

[–]Bad_Zoo_Boy -3 points-2 points ago

Ummm, red plates are usually ~45 lbs

[–]kanyeezy24 3 points4 points ago

Wikipedia says 25kg

Eleiko sells red 25kg plates

so does Pendlay

some red plates are 45lbs, but the norm is definitely 25kg.

Come on, come on. Pump it!

[–]aaronheck 4 points5 points ago

Pick anything in this room I can lift it over my head.

[–]the_trepverter 3 points4 points ago

Your feet.

[–]FThisNoise 45 points46 points ago

Do you even lift?

[–]jbg89 4 points5 points ago

fight me IRL!

[–]WildWasteland 5 points6 points ago

FWD: FWD: FWD: LOL SO FUNNY

/r/forwardsfromgrandma

[–]Zorroroaster 5 points6 points ago

She probably worked harder in a month than most of us will in a year. Grandmas kick ass and take names.

Edit: bonus points for proper grip!

[–]TheClayroo 20 points21 points ago

Mixed is not "proper," it's a variation generally for people who don't have the forearm strength to avoid a rollout.

[–]Birdslapper 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, what's a rollout?

[–]mortiphago[!] 5 points6 points ago

When the weight is too heavy for you to keep it gripped, but not necessarily too heavy to lift it. Ie: you can lift it, but once up you can't hold on to it, and it rolls outta your hand.

[–]Downhilldude 2 points3 points ago

I hit that at any weight over 300. My forearms are weak as hell and I can't seem to improve it. I do static holds, rows up the ass, Idk what else to do.

[–]Dialaninja 1 point2 points ago

Have you tried farmers walks? Works for me whenever my grip strength plateaus.

[–]Indorill 1 point2 points ago

Reverse grip curls on a straight bar do wonders for my forearms.

[–]accostedbyhippies 1 point2 points ago

I've heard Fat Gripz help improve forearm strenght.

[–]Birdslapper 0 points1 point ago

oh ok thanks, never had that problem =D

[–]TheClayroo 0 points1 point ago

Rolling out of your fingers, but not really intentionally dropping it.

[–]Zorroroaster -1 points0 points ago

Best tell that to the granny, then. I'll get out the camera and film her beating you with a handbag.

[–]DCraik -2 points-1 points ago

Do you even lift?

[–]russian_unicycle 3 points4 points ago

Mixed grip does give you the best grip but I don't like it. The bicep just doesn't feel right. There's a guy in my gym (probably lifts the tenfold of what I do and in addition he competes) who got his bicep torn while doing deadlifts with a mixed grip.

I prefer (a more sissy thing, for sure) straps. :)

[–]shookas 2 points3 points ago

Shouldn't have flexed his bicep.

[–]emceegyver 7 points8 points ago

Straps aren't sissy unless you are using them with a sissy amount of weight. Using straps for 600+lbs is not sissy. Using straps for 95lbs deserves a slap outside the head.

Have you tried chalk though? If you haven't, you may be surprised how much it helps.

[–]TheJ32 5 points6 points ago

Chalk is best

[–]bgrugby60 8 points9 points ago

Chalk will get you the "Lunk Alarm" at Planet Fitness.

[–]BananaTailor 16 points17 points ago

Doing deadlifts or squats at all will get you kicked out of Planet Fitness

[–]bgrugby60 7 points8 points ago

And then you miss out on pizza night...so sad

[–]Frapter 1 point2 points ago

What? Why? Are squats somehow unacceptable?

[–]DCraik 2 points3 points ago

To them, yes.

[–]accostedbyhippies 1 point2 points ago

I know a girl who does heavy barbell work at a PF and they've never rung the alarm. They did try to give her shit about using chalk but I guess after she executed a 350lb DL, they decided they'd leave well enough alone.

[–]no_no_NO_okay 0 points1 point ago

squats won't get you kicked out, deadlifts would for sure though. this is why planet fitness is fucking retarded. being a douche bag is a bad thing, being muscular and doing workouts properly is not.

[–]RockDrill 1 point2 points ago

does the lunk alarm actually result in any punishment or is it just embarrassing? planet fitness seem to have found the douchiest way to improve gym culture, but then I've never used their gyms

[–]CervantesX 0 points1 point ago

Only for gyms that allow chalk.

[–]DCraik 7 points8 points ago

If it doesn't allow chalk, it isn't a real gym.

[–]CervantesX 5 points6 points ago

U insulting my gym? Fight me irl.

[–]DCraik -3 points-2 points ago

ok

[–]TheDoktorIsIn 0 points1 point ago

Sounds unrelated, I've seen vids of bicep tendon tear with all grips. Gotta do what makes you comfortable thought.

[–]PigDog4 2 points3 points ago

The key is to not pull with your biceps. Like, at all.

[–]CokeCanNinja -1 points0 points ago

I prefer not being a pussy.

Wow, 405? Thought this was fake, but then saw the slight bend in the bar. Could be shopped but....wow.

[–]sharpa17 23 points24 points ago

I would estimate ~155lbs. The inside plates look like 25lb Hi-Temps. The rest are probably 10s. These are cheap rubber bumpers, not iron.

[–]le-dude 14 points15 points ago

Even so. A septuagenarian lady who deadlifts 155 wins pretty much any badass contest I can dream up. I wanna give that lady a high five.

[–]jftduncan 21 points22 points ago

She's actually 35, but has spent too much time in the tanning salon.

[–]mortiphago[!] 3 points4 points ago

oh man, I thought those were steel plates, i figured she was lifting around the 400 mark... Seeing how I'm at the 250ish , I was mighty impressed.

Meh

[–]VslachaTurbo Sloth 3 points4 points ago

I'll trust you because you use terminology that I am unfamiliar with.

[–]charbo25 6 points7 points ago

She's still a badass! :)

[–]sharpa17 3 points4 points ago

Of course! Definitely inspirational. I hope that I still have the motivation and ability to lift when I am older.

[–]MassMindRape 33 points34 points ago

Bumper plates. I believe they can be as little as 10 pounds.

[–]jerschneid 2 points3 points ago

It looks like a women's bar too. And it's not bending much.

[–]random19 3 points4 points ago

not a photoshop, also not standard 45lb plates.

[–]charbo25 2 points3 points ago

If it's a photoshop, color me impressed. The bar is bending slightly. It looks like you can see the bar pressing against her legs. There's a shadow from her sweatshirt on the middle of the bar. The mixed grip. She's even wearing appropriate shoes. It's hard to tell, but it looks like her right arm might not be locked out, which would be unlikely.

[–]TheDoktorIsIn 0 points1 point ago

Could be an old, pre-bent bar. Sharpa17 said that he estimated around 155lbs, but still I know people in college who can't DL that.

[–]sikyon 2 points3 points ago

The vast majority of people in college can DL that if you give them 2-3 weeks to get their CNS used to it.

[–]MasterSprtn117 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean by that last part?

[–]sikyon 2 points3 points ago

The deadlift is a very intense excersize that requires full coordination between a large number of muscle groups in your body (as do all the compound lifts). However, people who are not used to doing compound lifts will have terrible initial lifts because their central nervous system cannot coordinate all of their muscles properly and execute the lift properly. Generally people tend to start out very weak on these lifts (deadlift, squat, cleans, etc) the first time they do them and after a few weeks of regular practise their bodies get used to the motion and they can do it effectivly.

Basically you need to build in some muscle memory to get your full lift out. People will go from a 135 deadlift to a 200+ deadlift in a matter of weeks when they start simply due to their bodies getting used to it, not because their muscles can actually gain 40%+ strength in a few weeks.

[–]EgyptinMagicin21 2 points3 points ago

What was meant by getting the CNS used to it was this:

When you start working out a large portion, if not most of your strength gains comes from your nervous system increasing its ability to recruit. Recruitment refers to calling in more motor units (groups of muscle fibers) to contract.

So if you started lets say lifting 135 for deads for the first time ever, do it for a few weeks and lets say you jump up to 185 or something. You haven't built up a lot of muscle or anything, your CNS just got better at telling your existing muscles to contract with that motion.

TL;DR

Give nervous system time to be able activate as many muscle fibers as possible for a muscle group.

[–]DCraik 0 points1 point ago

it's not a photoshop, those are bumper plates. It's around 155 lbs.

[–]sel227 0 points1 point ago

I read in a previous version of this picture that she was lifting 110. Still very impressive nonetheless

[–]ironsidez -3 points-2 points ago

It's definitely impressive for an older lady to do this, but my grandfather is 80 and he could still do 405 without too much difficulty.

[–]le-dude 0 points1 point ago

Respect. It's folks like your grandpa and that guy who someone posted about earlier this week, the retired shepherd who just started running and winning ultramarathons and gave the prize money away … I exercise some, but they make me wonder what the hell I'm doing with myself, you know?

[–]ironsidez 0 points1 point ago

Ha I saw that post about that marathon runner. Them older folks are just a tougher breed. My grandfather was ray penna, his son an elite powerlifter and he himself team captain/ironworker/traincar box loader. Guy did everything, he still says that 30 years ago or so they were really close to getting powerlifting into the olympics, he himself was invited to compete in the senior division but was unable to attend. If anyone ever wants proof come see me at Skiba's gym in Carteret, a westside barbell certified gym. The guys there all know my grandfather as well, he just doesn't seem to age like a normal person. I myself am a terrible comparison to my uncle and grandfather but I have been working hard to try to continue the tradition.

[–]just_bob 1 point2 points ago

Reminds of this quote from secondhand lions:

"I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, KILLED MANY MEN and loved only one woman with a passion a FLEA like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. NOW, GO HOME, BOY!"
