And here I was, thinking God hated West Virginia...

[–]SashaTheBOLD 117 points118 points ago

Even TORNADOES are afraid to go to West Virginia.

[–]woopywoop 40 points41 points ago

I live in West Virginia and it's great here. Most of the time we get beautiful seasons. Especially right now during fall. Orange and yellow and brown tree leaves everywhere. It's great.

[–]jberth 77 points78 points ago

Partly cloudy with a chance of incest

[–]Shady7544 13 points14 points ago

Country roads, take me home...

[–]woopywoop 21 points22 points ago

Actually, incest is an extremely rare occurrence here. We have just as much of a chance as other states. Now it's true there are some people who are pretty off beat with society but they know that banging uncle Jim isn't the right thing to do. I've actually met more redneck people from Ohio than I have from West Virginia.

[–]wolfsktaag 6 points7 points ago

ive lived all over the US. even the non-continental. the most 'you got a purty mouth' place ive seen: some town off the interstate in the woods of PA

ill take southern necks over northern necks any day of the week

[–]Cawley22 3 points4 points ago

Come check out Maine.

[–]throwmeawayout 10 points11 points ago

This person is right. And the people you should really be afraid of live in KY and the Ozarks of MO.

[–]Pete_and_Carl 6 points7 points ago

Yes ozarks are bad. I have relatives there, I have seen how people live. I feel like it's a never ending war to see who can sit the most shit on their porch/front yard

[–]god_anus 1 point2 points ago

originally from the ozarks...no incest but I have an unnatural desire to put couches on my lawn

[–]pattywagon -1 points0 points ago

More like coal dust.

[–]GeneralBS 40 points41 points ago

he just hates the bible belt

[–]CoyoteStark 36 points37 points ago

On a scale of one to Sagan, this is at least a 10 in terms of bravery.

[–]asdfcasdf 23 points24 points ago

A single Sagan is actually 4 billion, so that's really not that much.

[–]CoyoteStark 17 points18 points ago

Apologies. My calculator was in "Bill DeGrasse Dawkins" mode, and I failed to change units.

[–]demonstrable_user 0 points1 point ago

wait, who hates the bible belt?

[–]zortor 0 points1 point ago

Which is kinda interesting, that the most heated, virulent, tempestuous(hah) people in the states are located in the most heated, virulent tempestuous(HAH) part of the states. You'd think that if God hated fags San Francisco would be wiped off the map.

[–]hidden_premise 4 points5 points ago

Clearly you've never been to Singapore

[–]skarface6 1 point2 points ago

Hooray West Virginia!

[–]xXRoflFalafelXx 1 point2 points ago

thank god i live in san francisco!

[–]UTC_Hellgate 63 points64 points ago

Good to see the Great Canadian Tornado shield remains active.

[–]SeymourLevov 19 points20 points ago

In Canada they are actually called Tornehdoes...

saying that out loud just now also explains the Mexican shield.....

[–]thesepigswillplay 9 points10 points ago

Please, don't jinx us.

[–]dt_vibe 0 points1 point ago

I'm in Toronto, and people are freaking out for the excessive rainfall these next few days.

[–]tukimansugiman 46 points47 points ago

TIL all tornadoes move in straight lines.

[–]McGravin 23 points24 points ago

Except for that one in New Mexico that takes a 90° turn.

[–]Joferd 36 points37 points ago

That would be Arizona. New Mexico is directly east of Arizona.

[–]xxXX69yourmom69XXxx 25 points26 points ago

As someone who lives in Arizona, I can confirm this.

[–]AntiHer0z 4 points5 points ago

As someone who lives in New Mexico, I can confirm this as well.

[–]Vermilllion 0 points1 point ago

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, their facts check out.

[–]SonicFlathead 10 points11 points ago

Must have been a wrong turn near Albuquerque...

[–]TrollErgoSum 3 points4 points ago

They don't, they just head in generally the same direction with the parent storm, and when you zoom out to such a great distance as this map then the small changes in the tracks are washed out.

[–]ndkl98 0 points1 point ago

What about that one in Albany NY? (I'm there right now)

[–]Swordfish08 0 points1 point ago

At this scale, yeah, for the most part. Most of the ones that others have pointed out as taking abrupt turns actually seem to be different tornadoes. If I remember correctly, they kind of wander back and forth, or spiral in the direction that they move.

[–]MrDave19 12 points13 points ago

Since when was there a Tornado in Seattle?!?

[–]Pravusmentis 1 point2 points ago

DO YOU QUESTION MY WIND_WRATH!?!?!?!?

[–]Jarnes_Bond 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering the same thing my friend

Here you go sir, i figured that komo news was a reputable source

http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/Thursday-is-40-year-anniversary-of-Washingtons-only-deadly-tornado-146323595.html?m=y&smobile=y

[–]djmg82 53 points54 points ago

Fucking love the west coast.

[–]MajorMol 63 points64 points ago

Until you get hit by an earthquake.

[–]summerkc 17 points18 points ago

And then all of your shit that fell down gets destroyed by wild fires. Dont forget you paid a 400% markup on that house to live there also. (I just bought a fairly new 4000 sq ft house here in Indiana for 159k)

[–]eramos 58 points59 points ago

(I just bought a fairly new 4000 sq ft house here in Indiana for 159k)

See, there's always a catch.

[–]Jzkqm 11 points12 points ago

Indiana's not so bad! We're just 27th on every list, good or bad.

[–]eramos 18 points19 points ago

Indiana: Almost as average as Ohio

[–]diggoran 3 points4 points ago

But that would make Ohio the MOST average place in the US, which is hardly average. Indiana is averagely average in every respect.

[–]CitizenPremier 7 points8 points ago

It's like the America of America.

[–]LineOfSight 12 points13 points ago

Yeah but you're in Indiana.

proudly paying the sunshine tax

[–]Captain_Vegetable 2 points3 points ago

While not for a place quite that big, you can make a down payment for a house here in San Fran for only a little more money than that.

[–]cHuZhEe 2 points3 points ago

That why I love El Paso, no tornado's, no earthquakes, and the seasons are what they are suppose to be they are not extreme, but it kind of boring.

[–]wwt0112 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, all you have is obesity and drugs.

[–]nwestnine 1 point2 points ago

I was in El Paso not too long ago. Saw a cute dancer and ended up killing a guy over her. Now, I don't know what to do...

[–]BKLounge -1 points0 points ago

Or catch on fire.

[–]predictableCommentor -1 points0 points ago

Vegas wins all. No tornados, no earthquakes, just hot/windy summers and cool/windy winters.

[–]aal113 11 points12 points ago

What the hell happened in 1953, 1965, and 1974?!

[–]sviraltp7101 12 points13 points ago

1954 was the Worcester tornado in Massachusetts. That big line going through the center of Mass. That was the deadliest tornado in American history before Joplin.

[–]Otterfan 3 points4 points ago

Actually the Flint, MI tornado the day before the Worcester tornado killed more people (116 dead vs 94 dead). Those two tornadoes are often linked together because they were spawned by the same storm.

[–]TrollErgoSum 2 points3 points ago

Very not true, the Tri-State Tornado was the deadliest at 695 confirmed deaths.

[–]barjam 1 point2 points ago

Joplin was the deadliest since 1953 and the tornado you mention but there were far more deadly tornadoes prior to 1953.

On a side note my son was born in the hospital that the Joplin tornadoes pushed off it's foundation. I hope to never see devastation like that again in my lifetime.

[–]nikolifish 1 point2 points ago

I'm with you. This is a pretty interesting phenomenon to me. The shame is that the data only goes back to 1950. So were these years the anomaly or did huge tornado seasons occur with some genera peroidicity until recently. Iirc wasn't there a particularly bad tornado season during the dust bowl era ?

[–]doubleclick -1 points0 points ago

My dad was born in 1953, so there's that.

[–]willymo 11 points12 points ago

If you'll notice, there's a tiny little spot in middle/west Tennessee that's black. That's where I grew up. It's on a plateau, and all the tornados hit the plateau and either stop or go around it. My town NEVER got hit with tornadoes, yet all our neighbors got demolished constantly. Thank you, geography!

[–]endymion2300 40 points41 points ago

can we overlay this with a map of all the u.s. trailer parks?

[–]ndchristie 125 points126 points ago

[–]endymion2300 14 points15 points ago

You're my hero.

[–]Genericrelish 6 points7 points ago

I see that my town is one big trailer park. That's exciting.

[–]03Titanium 1 point2 points ago

Now with all the earthquakes.

[–]LinkChecksOut 5 points6 points ago

[–]JacobCurry -1 points0 points ago

Can we get a legend on this mofo?

[–]FluoCantus 0 points1 point ago

That overlay is moved over too far to the right.

[–]SWgeek10056 6 points7 points ago

10% of which are in wisconsin, right?

[–]Krispyz 15 points16 points ago

I was about to get offended, but I realized we DO have a lot of trailer parks...

[–]lbutton 5 points6 points ago

The other parts are fields, bars, churches and the random village with population "Unincorporated"

[–]Lysus 2 points3 points ago

That we do.

[–]Squishy_squid 7 points8 points ago

There was a tornado in seattle?

[–]Toopato 4 points5 points ago

this is a common misconception, it was actually the landing of the space needle.

[–]CPO_Mendez 0 points1 point ago

It's quite nice at this end. No tornado's, rarely an earthquake this far north, just calm. Oh rain. We get that a bit...

[–]MegaSuperAwesome1214 26 points27 points ago

Oddly enough, West Virginia looks pretty nice, right now.

[–]jedadkins 7 points8 points ago

it is a beautiful state the media hates us though

[–]TSchroeder26 20 points21 points ago

First and last time that'll ever be said....

[–]jedadkins 2 points3 points ago

ever been? its actually a beautiful state

[–]skarface6 1 point2 points ago

It's not odd, it's a great state. Just super poor.

[–]AdamRGrey 12 points13 points ago

awesome. Totally thought I was in /r/dataisbeautiful for a second there.

[–]huskerblack 1 point2 points ago

I wasted an hour on this. Thank you

[–]_ThatOneDude 4 points5 points ago

The perks of living in WV. _^

[–]Imissyourgirlfriend2 19 points20 points ago

This is one reason why I live in CA.

[–]Semajal 61 points62 points ago

But.. Earthquakes?

[–]Im_At_Work_Damnit 22 points23 points ago

Pfft. Seasonal fires are a bigger worry than earthquakes.

[–]endymion2300 101 points102 points ago

i don't mind earthquakes. so my house falls on me, nbd. at least i'm not getting stabbed to death with a flying cow.

[–]OklaJosha 36 points37 points ago

being from Oklahoma... it amuses me that everyone is scared of tornadoes. they hit a very limited range; unlike hurricanes, earthquakes, or tsunamis which fuck EVERYTHING up.

granted, if they do actually hit you. you're fucked.

[–]shoeler 9 points10 points ago

but your house just flies in the air and you go to oz?

source: some movie I watched that I synced up to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon

[–]Aszuul 4 points5 points ago

at the point of cow body impact you have already ceased to exist, so it's not that bad.

[–]screampuff 11 points12 points ago

I live in Nova Scotia, no earthquakes, tornadoes, never seen a flood...Maybe a bad hurricane once per decade. It also never gets unbearably hot, or freezing cold. We do have to deal with incredibly friendly people, however.

[–]drzaeus 15 points16 points ago

Haha. Move to N.S. he said, the winters aren't freezing cold he said.

[–]screampuff 1 point2 points ago

We've had 1 white Christmas in the past 6 or 7 years, and it turned to green on Boxing Day.

I miss the long white winters of my childhood, where you could skate on frozen lakes and ponds for more than a week out of the whole winter :(

[–]helium_farts -1 points0 points ago

And crazy laws.

[–]Cinnamon__Buns 9 points10 points ago

Earthquakes scare me more then Tornado's...

Tornado limited area of impact, advanced weather and storm warning's, can hide in shelter or sturdy heavy object (like a walk in fridge, basement, even ditch)

Earthquake, massive area of impact, no concrete warnings, may cause tsunamis.

[–]weatherbys 3 points4 points ago

As a survivor of one of the largest tornados in history, I believe you would feel differently if you had been there lol.

[–]higherlogic 3 points4 points ago

CA is the reason I live in Phoenix. No earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, mudslides, blizzards, tsunamis, etc. The occasional dust storm is about the most dramatic thing we get.

[–]chrismetalrock 6 points7 points ago

Heat, the silent killer :D

[–]nwestnine -1 points0 points ago

Doesn't everything give you cancer there?

[–]skarface6 0 points1 point ago

Wildfires?

Do you guys get tsunami warnings?

[–]StumpyMcStump 7 points8 points ago

[–]Semiautomatix 9 points10 points ago

I feel bad saying this, but it's actually a beautiful picture...

[–]Zerovarner 4 points5 points ago

I couldn't help but think the same thing...countless dead and property lost aside.

[–]ChiliRitz 3 points4 points ago

West Virginia doesn't look too bad.

[–]Vengeance164 3 points4 points ago

Woo! As someone from West Virginia, it's nice to see something about WV that isn't incestuous or in overalls.

[–]Deslyn 2 points3 points ago

At least Appalachia has something going for it.

[–]StewHo 2 points3 points ago

People never believe me when I say we get a bunch of tornadoes here in MS. Now I can show them this.

[–]w00t4me 2 points3 points ago

Same with Alabama. no one believes me when I say tornado's are worse here than in the great plains.

[–]fixthecopier 6 points7 points ago

Even tornadoes will not go into West Virginia.

[–]helium_farts 4 points5 points ago

Tornadoes and mountains don't get along very well.

[–]Filter_Out_Cats 2 points3 points ago

It's incredible the way they just stop at Canada.

[–]Great_Chairman_Mao 3 points4 points ago

Remind me to not live in the Midwest. Can we get an earthquake map of the US?

[–]chuttz 3 points4 points ago

Very inaccurate. (Obviously) it's only tracks of tornadoes that the source is aware of because I've personally seen dozens of tornadoes in a relatively small area over a few years that are in a pretty clean area of the map in Oklahoma.

[–]katzenjammer360 4 points5 points ago

It also only goes to 2007 if you look at the scale at the bottom.

[–]Trashcanman33 0 points1 point ago

I saw 2 tornadoes in 30 years living in Kansas, how did you see dozens in a few years? Are you like a weather chaser or something?

[–]Xeeke 0 points1 point ago

I feel more comfortable now seeing that I live in one of the dark areas.

[–]gogriz 1 point2 points ago

Or why I love living in the North West

[–]Kashyd 1 point2 points ago

god only likes half the americans

[–]viroxit 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if mother nature cares about West Virginia, or is just trolling us.

[–]bookishyo 1 point2 points ago

I live in that blue spot.

[–]vamub 0 points1 point ago

And not one going where they say sandy will... O that's just great

[–]leggomyshmeggo 0 points1 point ago

I'm more interested in the Fujita Scale. Tasty.

[–]Stinkfingers 0 points1 point ago

I live right there in the middle of that mess.

[–]TentacleFace 0 points1 point ago

mountains are your friend.

[–]fiveironfreshy 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I read this as "Toronto Attacks In America." Was sorely disappointed.

[–]thatloudblondguy 0 points1 point ago

Hey east-coast, we'll trade ya for earthquakes.

[–]Wolfie_Ecstasy -1 points0 points ago

Fuck this side of the country in particular!

[–]jotate 1 point2 points ago

What was that big fucker that cut across the full width of Florida?!

[–]kx250f855 1 point2 points ago

This is pretty cool. I'd like to see this with all natural disasters.

[–]thefinalfight1 0 points1 point ago

Ah, yes. Canada the blasted grey wasteland.

[–]ihatecats18 1 point2 points ago

Tornados allergic to mountains?

[–]pecindian17 0 points1 point ago

Seems my area in Illinois has it's own little safe zone going...hoping that doesn't end any time soon.

[–]xj13361987 0 points1 point ago

I thought it said tornado attacks which made it much more terrifying.

[–]johnsmcjohn 0 points1 point ago

No tornadoes in Vegas in the last 50 years. Yet another reason why I love this city. :)

[–]Iomma -1 points0 points ago

I see that one very small dot right there in the Seattle area of Washington, and I'm thinking, we get more than just Earthquakes here?

I see one tornado here, I'm out.

[–]rdunlap1 0 points1 point ago

Alternative title: 56 years of lightsaber battles in America

[–]rage_rave 0 points1 point ago

Every spring shit hits the fan in the midwest.

[–]Steveiethenarwhal 0 points1 point ago

Look how cool that is, one went all the way across central Florida.

[–]jennafoo33 1 point2 points ago

Life here in California is good. Although a similar map for earthquakes would be interesting...

[–]Isle_of_Tortuga 1 point2 points ago

As a citizen of Missouri.... fuck.

[–]GaetanDugas 0 points1 point ago

They all appear to be moving in the same direction, southwest/northeast. Why is that?

[–]Zanthazar 0 points1 point ago

1 tornado in 56 years in southern vermont, and it goes through my front yard

[–]moogoesthecat 0 points1 point ago

East coast. Beast coast.

[–]serosis 0 points1 point ago

#1 Reason to not live in the Eastern U.S.

I will take the earthquakes and super volcanoes over that shit.

[–]corylew 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I didn't know there were so many gays in the midwest.

[–]sfoxy 0 points1 point ago

Some of those tracks are pretty long... Do tornados really go for a hundred miles?

[–]cuntRatDickTree -1 points0 points ago

That's just the USA not America... trololol

[–]RobToastie 0 points1 point ago

That is some beautiful data.

[–]Junes2k 0 points1 point ago

Living in eastern Kentucky doesn't look to bad right about now.

[–]vainamo- 0 points1 point ago

There are a few long-ass tornado trails there.

[–]lejudge 0 points1 point ago

west coast is best coast

[–]RemmyQEinstein 0 points1 point ago

....and here we have further evidence that tornadoes are caused by gay marriage

[–]eskimofr3nzy 0 points1 point ago

Thank GOD i live in West Virginia

[–]ben_lacy 1 point2 points ago

Arizona here, what's a weather?

[–]Mamba1138 0 points1 point ago

I wish i could see my state....

[–]Druzl 2 points3 points ago

I live in Iowa... Fuck

[–]Azzwagon 2 points3 points ago

I am the wizard protecting West Virginia AMA.

[–]jednx01 0 points1 point ago

This may be a dumb question, but do tornados always travel in straight lines? I never really thought about it until I saw this picture.

[–]anon_eh_moose 1 point2 points ago

Because fuck Mississippi.

[–]danavondette 0 points1 point ago

It's like fuck this area in particular

[–]RcOhTeMfGs 0 points1 point ago

Fuck it I'm moving to Nevada

[–]BenMargarine 0 points1 point ago

Those Nevada fuckers.

[–]shoeler 0 points1 point ago

the nearly logarithmic pattern the frequency of F#'s occur makes my math-weeney super hard.

[–]tyvanius 0 points1 point ago

What's up with that tornado in Arizona that pulled a right angle?

[–]SrsSteel 0 points1 point ago

TIL tornados move in straight lines

[–]THE_GR8_MIKE 0 points1 point ago

74' was REALLY a shitstorm.

[–]Jacqalope 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to see trailer park locations on this map.

[–]EvilHom3r 0 points1 point ago

Source, which includes a much higher quality version, an updated version, and an interactive version.

Next time, please take the two seconds to link to the source.

[–]gr3n3gsnsam 0 points1 point ago

Can someone explain why all the tornadoes are concentrated in the east and none in the west?

[–]meatblock 1 point2 points ago

Those sweet sweet Appalachians.

[–]MyNameIsHax 0 points1 point ago

tfw you cant even see where you live.

feelsbadman.jpg

[–]noisycat 0 points1 point ago

They are really sawing away at the lower half of Florida.

[–]Benjaphar 0 points1 point ago

[–]MakeYouHamble 0 points1 point ago

This needs to be on /r/MapPorn

[–]ON3i11 0 points1 point ago

I like how that map tries to make Canada and Mexico almost invisible, as if the U.S. were surrounded completely by ocean.

[–]ShrewyLouie 0 points1 point ago

Weird how the frequency is clearly worse in areas you would expect, but the severity seems horrible in northern AL/MS. This only lends to the question, "What came first, the tornado or the trailer park?"

[–]baracudaboy 0 points1 point ago

fuck yeah californiaaaaaa

[–]ChillsWithKittens 0 points1 point ago

tl;dr Live in Nevada

[–]erock0546 0 points1 point ago

Wow, there's a small area around where I live that hasn't been hit... yet...

[–]spudty 0 points1 point ago

I live in that little spot in northern Illinois that has hardly any hits. I always thought storms went around us and this confirms it. Now to figure out why.

[–]lukaskywalker 0 points1 point ago

so is each straight line one tornado?

[–]rosesareredviolets 0 points1 point ago

After living in Arkansas most of my life I moved to South Carolina where I mentioned to a friend. "At least I don't have to worry about tornadoes."

My friend laughed in my face.

[–]reality_czech 0 points1 point ago

That tornado in the Seattle, Washington area is my first memory

[–]CalvinDehaze 0 points1 point ago

WTf, when was there tornadoes in Los Angeles??

[–]aloadofgobbledegook 0 points1 point ago

"Tornado Terrorism is on the rise and needs to be sorted out!" - Mitt Romney.

[–]elastic-craptastic 0 points1 point ago

Anybody else see that overweight, armless , native american woman with a bunch of bullet wounds in her torso in the grey area between the tornados and the rockies?

[–]MinjaSaurus 0 points1 point ago

This is actually really sweet...

[–]AudacityTN 0 points1 point ago

Tornadoes: they don't enter Canada. Ever.

[–]Mikemillering1 0 points1 point ago

This is probably the only chart that can me ok with the fact that I live in Utah.

[–]saltmarsh 0 points1 point ago

Jim Morrison was right.

[–]xordon 0 points1 point ago

Now show me a map of earthquakes for the same period
