Unfortunately it's true, and it seems like most people nowadays only half-experience things because they are too busy capturing it and sharing it rather than just being there.

While this comic is somewhat of an exaggeration, though it does happen often, the worse part is that people arrange their whole life like this, angrily moving "cool" bits and pieces around for the supposed benefit of others and little benefit for themselves.

Sad world, in a lot of ways.

[–]Malex_Wolf 48 points49 points ago

Whoa. That's a lot better of my go-to: "I don't take photos because i'm lazy."

[–]ashiningstar 5 points6 points ago

i dont even have the means to film anything so the incident with my friend not knowing how to work her defroster in the dead of winter will be only in our memories :(

[–]Lord_NiteShade 43 points44 points ago

Nothing can defeat the people who go to concerts, to hold an Ipad over their head to record said concert, to later go home and upload this video to YouTube, so they can later post to FaceBook, because they were at said concert.

[–]peach_and_garlic_pie 19 points20 points ago

[–]BornOnFeb2nd 23 points24 points ago

HAI GUYZ! I'M AT THIS AWESOME CONCERT!

Uh...no shit? So are we?

[–]upvotes_doesnt_post 10 points11 points ago

While I am certainly guilty of this, I've found that my memory of stuff fades fairly quickly and photos of all the cool stuff I did provide, I find, the best way to reminisce, so it has its ups too

[–]angrylawyer 17 points18 points ago

The worst are people at museums. That object your photographing has been around for a 100+ years, everybody and their mothers have already photographed it better than you. Last time I saw the hope diamond I almost couldn't see it because it was surrounded by a thousand fucking cameras as people tried to take some 'amazing' picture of it. I saw a few people spend more time looking at it through their camera than actually looking at it with their eyes.

[–]gustercc 4 points5 points ago

I'm guilty of doing the same thing when I saw the Mona Lisa. There were so many people surrounding it, you almost couldn't see it. It was difficult to just sit there and soak it in because people were pushing, shoving, and clicking.

[–]murderface04 6 points7 points ago

Besides that, I didn't find the Mona Lisa that impressive. Probably because I knew exactly what it looked like before stepping foot in the Louvre.

[–]Evilllamas 8 points9 points ago

What's so special about the Mona Lisa anyway, it's not particularly interesting.

[–]Bongson 8 points9 points ago

Honestly, I see graffiti nowadays that I feel is far more impressive. I mean actually good graffiti, not those idiots who tag everywhere with "Tongue" or "i luv hitler".

I get how much work was done to achieve a painting of that quality in that time, but there are people today who can "paint" better pictures using their computers.

EDIT: Grammarz

[–]SansGray 3 points4 points ago

I honestly hope you don't get downvoted to oblivion because you're saying what a lot of us are thinking.

[–]angrylawyer 1 point2 points ago

The Mona Lisa revolutionized painting. The pose itself broke tradition--previously, portraits were invariably full length. Leonardo introduced the waist-up, hands-folded-on-lap approach, which allowed for a much more intimate treatment. The pose was imitated immediately and became fashionable for portraiture by such painters are Raphael. The background is painted in a gradation of lights and colors, losing details in the distance, instead of the traditional approach in which foreground and background are equally distinct. Mona herself is rendered with extraordinary vividness--one has a sense of viewing the living woman. (The effortless realism of photography has perhaps diminished our capacity to appreciate this.) Leonardo displayed in this work a mastery of technique that was unknown at the time, profoundly impressed his contemporaries, and has seldom been equaled since.

From here. Just a guess though, I don't know anything about art history.

[–]everybodyisanigga 0 points1 point ago

When I was there, you weren't allowed to take pictures! (of the Mona Lisa specifically)

[–]BornOnFeb2nd 3 points4 points ago

Then the photo will be EXACTLY how they remember it.

and zoom lenses.

[–]n1c0_ds 4 points5 points ago

It still makes sense to take a few pictures of the craziest things, like that 4 meters high painting at the Louvres, so you can show your family when you return, but that's about it.

[–]Wazowski 13 points14 points ago

I went to a Jonathan Coulton show in SF awhile back. At the table in front of me, all four people were videotaping the show on their smartphones, obstructing my view for the entire set.

Punchline: They were all wearing "reddit" t-shirts.

[–]TheRanchoChupacabraj 16 points17 points ago

You know it is possible to take a picture, put away your camera and experience the moment, right? There's nothing wrong with taking photos or videos of things you would like to remember.

[–]purplezart -3 points-2 points ago

take a picture, put away your camera and experience the moment

But the picture will never be of a moment you experienced, and you'll never get to experience the moment when you were preoccupied with taking the picture.

[–]muglecruzle 3 points4 points ago

Same could be said with most people that text frequently.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 17 points18 points ago

This is why never take my camera or take pictures anywhere I go, I've been to so many countries and things and not taken a single picture. I don't give a fuck, I'd rather just experience it there and then, than waste time taking pictures and being annoying posing for shit.

Fuck photography, someone else can do that shit, I want no part of it.

[–]EskimoRanger 28 points29 points ago

"Fuck photography" lol.

[–]Satan_in_a_Sundayhat 10 points11 points ago

All of the photos I have of me and my friends are of us sitting around bored. This isn't because we're boring people, it's because we only think to take photos when we're not doing anything more interesting. When I am out and about i don't want to stop and document fun, I want to have it!

[–]hirajo 14 points15 points ago

Pictures are trophies! like Dexters bloodslides. You look at them to feel something... if you don't have any trophies you should try it! it makes you feel (breaths deep) ...alive

[–]BlackZeppelin 0 points1 point ago

So you're saying we should go murder people???

[–]RedAero 5 points6 points ago

I can sort of understand people taking photographs of themselves in certain places, it can jog a memory later on and remind you of the trip. I can also understand taking a photograph of something very unusual and unique as well.

What I do not understand is people taking photgraphs of landmarks and other famous stuff like paintings... I mean, this is the information age: someone else much more qualified than you has taken a better photograph in higher resolution, probably with a tripod, of the very thing you're photographing. Download it and look at it, instead of wasting your time.

/rant

By the way, I'm a lot like you. I take very few photographs.

[–]ihatemaps 1 point2 points ago

Do they still make cell phones without cameras?

[–]seanmharcailin 2 points3 points ago

i went to a city and color concert and Dallas said "Just for this one song, put away your phones and cameras and just enjoy the music". It was amazing. so much better without everybody trying to capture it.

[–]Foxtrot56 4 points5 points ago

I made this argument in another thread and got a lot of downvotes.

People hate to admit it but when they take pictures they generally are taking them to show off to other people. People like pictures with celebrities because they value more highly the proof that they met the celebrity than the experience with the celebrity. I don't get those photos because I live in the moment and not for reddit, but for myself.

I am cool as fuck.

[–]allwittynamesaregone 1 point2 points ago

Of course. Life is all about getting likes on facebook and sweet sweet karma/upvotes here

[–]Icovada 3 points4 points ago

I have a friend who would keep suggesting stupid shit to me. Like: "Let's go to $bigtown/Switzerland/San Marino/Montecarlo". And when asked why the fuck would we need to go there "Well, to check in on Facebook for starters..."

When I told him he is wasting his whole life doing things not for himself but for the others alone, he is consuming his time and money chasing the lone "like" from people he thinks to be best friends with but who never call him, people who he praises for taking "cool" photos on their private plane but who never invited him on it, he answered: "Damn right I am!"

K, see you never again, asshole

[–]LukaCola 0 points1 point ago

Clubs...

[–]n1c0_ds 1 point2 points ago

That's why I take less and less pictures in general. I love looking at old pictures, but I tend to appreciate my trip less when I'm just thinking about photo ops.

[–]Soltheron 0 points1 point ago

Unfortunately it's true, and it seems like most people nowadays only half-experience things because they are too busy capturing it and sharing it rather than just being there.

When I first visited my girlfriend in the US (I'm from Norway), we went to Sea World. I had my camera with me and I recorded practically everything. I was, in fact, so focused on recording it that I totally missed out on the opportunity to truly experience it myself.

Then I got back to Norway and no one really cared to watch the footage, anyway.

Since then I haven't recorded anything at all while on vacation.

[–]M4rtinEd3n 0 points1 point ago

Good evening, Mr. Fromm.

I thought you were dead. Could you do an AMA for us, please?

[–]Swedish_chocolate 0 points1 point ago

I had a high school teacher who pointed this out. I had never thought about it much before. But now, I don't take many pictures. Especially at concerts the picture quality is so shitty anyway I just take two or three then I'm done. If a friend askes me to take more I usually just hand them my phone So they can do it.

[–]morelikemajorjayn 78 points79 points ago

Rehosted webcomics will be removed. Please submit a link to the original comic's site and preferably an imgur link in the comments.

http://pandyland.net/71/

[–]Mispey 20 points21 points ago

Solid point.

Never enforced.

[–]SirFancyMcFancePants 3 points4 points ago

Actually enforced if you report the link and message the mods as instructed. You don't see the rule being enforced because once you saw the post, you won't find it odd that you don't see it again. You also don't see posts that are already removed.

[–]Golden-Calf 2 points3 points ago

Actually enforced if you report the link and message the mods as instructed

The second part (messaging the mods) is most important. You can't expect them to instantly recognize every single webcomic and know that it should be removed. It's also easy to overlook where an image is hosted. If you see a problem and care about fixing it, then you have to message the mods if you expect anything to be done.

[–]Mispey 3 points4 points ago

Let's see this one get enforced then. I'll report this one.

[–]SirFancyMcFancePants 3 points4 points ago

Good :) Think about me when it's been removed.

[–]sodypop[M] 0 points1 point ago

Removed, thanks for reporting. It's even more helpful if you send a link to the moderators explaining why you reported something, but we'll take the help any way we can get it. The link to message us is in the sidebar above the moderator box. Cheers!

[–]shadmere[S] 0 points1 point ago

The actual link was posted by someone months ago. It got 14 upvotes and was seen by almost no one. I try not to repost things that got a lot of attention, but it's not uncommon that a webcomic "fails" on reddit because of simple bad luck or bad timing. The exact same thing can be posted twice, once getting 3 upvotes and once getting 3000, with no apparent difference between posts.

Sorry for not noticing the rule, though. (Read the bullet points, missed the paragraph after them, apparently.)

[–]Mispey 0 points1 point ago

Reposting, I don't care.

Rehosting is not cool, not nice. Not at all. I'm glad that rule exists, but I wish more people understood.

[–]shadmere[S] 1 point2 points ago

I found the picture on Facebook, and Google image searched to find the comic. I tried posting it, but couldn't, because it had already been posted.

Does it make sense that it didn't seem like a post with 14 upvotes would have to be the last time that comic could ever be posted? I see what you mean, and you're actually probably right. But does it at least make sense what I was thinking?

[–]baxterg13 0 points1 point ago

dude, those guys are weird

[–]CriesWhenPoops -3 points-2 points ago

This should be higher up guys

[–]dimwhit 5 points6 points ago

Sometimes I think half of reddit is reposters!

[–]gamertje 6 points7 points ago

I feel sorry for the cat. It looks so sad :(

[–]RahadJackson 22 points23 points ago

Would be more accurate if her post said "Night in! Cocktail + Vonnegut + Mr Jingles=Awesomeness" or some such nonsense.

[–]batdad89 0 points1 point ago

MIND EQUALS BLOWN

[–]whitemamba83 -1 points0 points ago

Night in! <33333 >>>>> #cocktail #vonnegut #mrjingles #loveit

[–]Mrdoctorsomebody 27 points28 points ago

Fuck cats.

[–]WhiskeyAbuse 23 points24 points ago

kinky

[–]MayorEmanuel 3 points4 points ago

Should I say something about Colby now?

[–]literally_a_whale 4 points5 points ago

Definitely not.

[–]Mrdoctorsomebody 0 points1 point ago

lol

[–]moar_noaw 5 points6 points ago

In the true nature of the post: Fuck the people who do this, the cats are just cats.

[–]PancakeTune 6 points7 points ago

But can we fuck the cats, too?

[–]seancolorado 6 points7 points ago

If you're into that sorta thing

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 0 points1 point ago

Weirdos...

[–]morrgh 0 points1 point ago

Only if you ask them first.

[–]Mrdoctorsomebody 0 points1 point ago

thats what i meant, so many cats.

why not zoidberg?

[–]BlackZeppelin 1 point2 points ago

Fuck ancient Egypt

[–]jdk 9 points10 points ago

Yes, almost half of reddit reposts.

[–]Dawsdani 6 points7 points ago

As a massive Vonnegut reader the first thing i noticed about that picture is that "A man without a country" is nowhere near that thick. Its less than 150 pages.

[–]Lost_In_Transylvania 24 points25 points ago

Do you know how can you tell if someone reads Vonnegut?

[–]jordanminjie 10 points11 points ago

He'll tell you.

[–]WIDE_OPEN_BEAVERS 0 points1 point ago

Shit's getting real itt.

[–]bultonic 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. I don't think any of his books are usually that thick. Well, not the popular ones.

[–]robbyk123 0 points1 point ago

Never read Vonnegut before, but now that I look back at the comic, that is a huge book

[–]Ghenges 2 points3 points ago

I've seen this done before but with import beer and Carl Sagan's Cosmos and it was a Friday night.

[–]BeerSlayingBeaver 2 points3 points ago

This is literally the THIRD time I've seen this on the front page.

[–]TheHippyInTheSuit 1 point2 points ago

Think of it as a sign that you should switch off your computer, go outside and do something less boring instead.

[–]BeerSlayingBeaver 0 points1 point ago

OMG you're right.

[–]twist3dl0gic 3 points4 points ago

Please, I finish my drinks. Who the fuck wastes their alcohol like that?

[–]Thefriendlyfaceplant 2 points3 points ago

People who are occupied on Facebook.

[–]I_STAB_HIPSTER_FILTH 2 points3 points ago

I wish I could own a phone jammer. I fucking hate it when people come to hang out, then sit in a circle chatting on facebook to people who ARENT there.

[–]NutellaGrande 1 point2 points ago

looks up from phone

Be more interesting and maybe that won't happen!

[–]I_STAB_HIPSTER_FILTH 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking up a cheeky insult, but to be fair, you're right. But english is my 3rd language, and I have zero people I would call friends from constant moving around. How exactly do I learn this?

[–]Maggot149 1 point2 points ago

[–]expiredtofu -1 points0 points ago

Where'd the paper umbrella go? D:

[–]Peetzaman -1 points0 points ago

Obligatory statement that most of reddit is not female.

[–]Politus -1 points0 points ago

Please, there's no female half of reddit.

[–]zajaczka -1 points0 points ago

Over half of reddit is legally unable to drink alcohol, so, no.

[–]rg5309 0 points1 point ago

I've been trying to get this point across on reddit, and kudos to you for succeeding to some extent. If you consider why this is the case, though, It makes sense. Reddit's ranking system is pretty cool. It lets the user decide, to a large degree, what will be popular and what will not. So, the constant barrage of obviously staged pictures with casual captions (I just so happened to BLEH BLEH...) is purely a reflection of the majority of the average redditors mindset. I truly hate this "average redditor", with a passion. But the positive response to these types of images creates an "evolutionary arms race". Someone sees this kind of image, realizes its popular, for some reason decides that it is necessary to recapitulate this behavior because they believe it makes them somehow more successful or happy in life, and they post crappy, thoughtless, and meaningless photos that end up doing quite well... because the average redditor is freaking idiot. But here is where I must digress. There is a subset of redditors that blow my mind. People that I truly consider kindred spirits. People that have a never-ending drive from curiosity and desire a thorough understanding of their surroundings, to contemplate the difficult problems, and are not afraid to post controversial topics and comments and get down voted, because to them... It doesn't really matter as long as just one of the culprits gets the message. This very small group of redditors is the only reason I even come here any more. So again, kudos to you and I hope that this resonates with a few people that will stop flooding this community with garbage. Because it truly has the potential to be so much more than cats and their low self-esteem owners who strive for fake points because it somehow validates their existence.

[–]Gibb1982 0 points1 point ago

Actually reddit is more like the friend who copies the picture and hyena posts it with the same title.

[–]ovenrash 0 points1 point ago

Only half?

[–]nothingkwt 0 points1 point ago

False. They are not that pretty

[–]himynameisphil2 0 points1 point ago

and sometimes I think almost half of reddit reposts like this

[–]t_o_o 0 points1 point ago

You forgot to add the picture of the person sitting on reddit hitting the refresh button on her profile.

[–]spock_block 0 points1 point ago

And the other half is just sitting there, masturbating behind their desks.

[–]Blame_The_Green 1 point2 points ago

"He does this all the time." Probably the second most-told lie on the internet.

[–]heyyo173 1 point2 points ago

half?

the other half are "oh I had a family member die...BETTER POST IT ON REDDIT" or "I am going to pretend a family member died and post a picture of some instagrammed pilot or pretty 1950's housewife"

whore me some karma

[–]SuperHorribleGaming 0 points1 point ago

does that mean /r/aww is half of reddit

[–]glowtape 0 points1 point ago

Not sure what the hate about cameras in here is about...

It all depends on the situation. If I'm on a concert, I don't expect to be able to take any usable pictures anyway, so I don't bring one and just enjoy the thing. If I'm in a museum or something, I can actually take pictures (mostly to train techniques than increasing the internet collection by one) and still take time to actually appreciate what I'm looking at with my actual eyes. You don't need to rush in that case.

Instagram close-ups on Facebook however...

[–]Clayburn 0 points1 point ago

Beyond Reddit.

[–]beer0clock 0 points1 point ago

Dog or Cat starts doing something incredibly cute or funny that it has never done before in its life. Sprint for the camera and take a picture quickly before it moves. If you're in the picture with the animal, make sure to look nonchalant like it happens all the time.

Post on reddit with caption "Stupid cat does this ALL the time"

[–]MeltingDolphin 0 points1 point ago

Repost!

[–]jules_am 0 points1 point ago

And the other half of reddit is repost-ers...

[–]malcatrino 0 points1 point ago

I agree except for the cat. He's not a victim just an asshole.

[–]GhostRape 0 points1 point ago

If anyone has a copy of Man Without a Country that they're done taking pictures of, I'll take it. Also any other Vonnegut books, including but not limited to:

  • Slapstick! (Or lonesome nomore)
  • Player Piano
  • Sirens of Titan
  • God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
  • Breakfast Of Champions
  • Time Quake
  • Galapagos
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Blue Beard
  • While Mortals Sleep
  • Mother Night

As I've given these books away over the years, they are no longer in my collection, if anyone wants to pay it forward, seriously, I'm your guy.

EDIT: I forgot this was r/funny and you guys don't give a shit. Carry on.

[–]Heablz 0 points1 point ago

This isn't how half of Reddit is, because it's not a fucking repost from 10 minutes ago.

[–]WeedMemes 0 points1 point ago

Thats instagram/Facebook. Things like this offend us redditors.

[–]rikashiku 0 points1 point ago

So did the other 20 people who reposted it.

[–]GreenFox1505 0 points1 point ago

I don't don't think "almost half" of reddit is female, but I guess I could be wrong...

[–]patricknayani 0 points1 point ago

REPOST

[–]Nsfw_1794 1 point2 points ago

Not half.. More

[–]typtyphus -1 points0 points ago

She forgot to pose infront what she wanted to post.

[–]Secret_Medicine -1 points0 points ago

Whoever has 'Man Without a Country' as their favorite book is one depressed mother fucker.

[–]SilverSpider781 -2 points-1 points ago

Who drinks a cocktail while reading?

[–]PrairieHarpy 1 point2 points ago

I do. You can't read Hemingway without a Cuba Libre in hand. At least, I can't.

[–]Potgut 3 points4 points ago

True, this is a great example of most of reddit, a repost.

[–]Drcakeboss55 -3 points-2 points ago

So don't mean to be rude but this is a repost. Maybe even the second or third time, but I remember this post from around a year ago.

[–]Jimmy2e 0 points1 point ago

Because you've seen it everyone must of right?

[–]mitharas -4 points-3 points ago

The other half of reddits just reposts old stuff. Like the OP.

[–]Ms_Freedom -3 points-2 points ago

Not an original post. saw this here months ago. downvoted!

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]RESET-REWIND 0 points1 point ago

Cell phone cameras are pretty good nowadays. Where have you been the last five years?

[–]LSYouTiger 0 points1 point ago

I'd say its more than half.

[–]HilariousMax 0 points1 point ago

"half"
ha
hahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Yeah, you're probably right ... "almost half" /nod

[–]ZombieV83 -2 points-1 points ago

All of my facebook friends will update their profile multiple times with pictures of what they're doing at the moment

I rarely upload pictures into my facebook account. In fact it's usually cause I'm tagged by another photo. Does this mean I'm not enjoying life because I don't have all these cool pictures every weekend? Hell no, I'm too busy enjoying each and every moment to worry less about making sure the internet knows how cool I am or how much fun I'm having.

[–]AmusedToDeath -2 points-1 points ago

As a lifelong Vonnegut fan, I was shocked and disappointed with the banality and superficiality of A Man Without a Country. Sad that that was his final work.

[–]BatCaveGuano 0 points1 point ago

I completely lmfao when i saw this! I've thought the same thing.

[–]SatansChronic -1 points0 points ago

I do this except with my dog and a beer.

[–]Susan_Astronomonov -5 points-4 points ago

Hmm... I'm guessing this is your alt account.

Because this account is too new to know about reddit's Vonnegut fanbase. So are half of the people upvoting this thinking it is only because of the cat.

[–]Fraidnot -5 points-4 points ago

Half lol, says the op with no original content.

[–]GARRETTKELLEY -4 points-3 points ago

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnd repost

[–]nbshark -1 points0 points ago

I like how the picture looks instagrammed.

[–]DeliciousT -3 points-2 points ago

This is so true. Kind of depressing, though.

[–]Larchierainbow -5 points-4 points ago

I love how the cat left in the last photo xD

[–]FiredFox -5 points-4 points ago

You forgot to say something negative about Apple and how you can't believe this great photo came out of your Galaxy S3.

Oh, and ow the existence of Mitt Romney proves that there is no god. (Lower case g is important here...)
