Well up until the point where his leg falls off, it could represent his humanity or innocence leaving his body when he decides to do what he wants. I have no explanation for most of the middle, but when his cut out portion fills with the paper it could represent him regaining that humanity/innocence/whatever, but it can never truly return to the way it was.

Probably just some hipster trying to be unfathomably deep though.
