when do we know a racist joke become a super racist joke?

[–]bicycle_samurai 143 points144 points ago

When it takes like three episodes to transform.

[–]kiwiPanther 7 points8 points ago

bebo?

[–]buster2Xk 5 points6 points ago

That still exists?

[–]krazykellen 0 points1 point ago

My apologies. Next time I'll re-upload it to imgur.

[–]deltree711 10 points11 points ago

Allow me to explain with an example.

Way back in the day, I was playing some Brood War on battle.net (UMS, if you're wondering.) There was some kid trying to be offensive just to troll the other players, but he wasn't doing very well. I started teasing the kid about it, and eventually we got into a bit of a competition with black jokes. It was pretty racist. Eventually, one of the other players said that they were pretty upset, as they were black and found it offensive. (The N-word was being used quite a bit.)

My resoponse?

"Oh, I didn't know you could get internet connections in cotton fields."

That's where it crossed over to super racist. (The "offended" person had pretty much the same reaction as OP.)

As a black guy I find this to be hilarious and I'd high five you if I could.

Yeah, but there's no need to be rude about it. It's like making fun of the kid with down's syndrome.

[–]Llaq 116 points117 points ago

From OP's comment history:

p.s. im white.

And a little bit later:

Stereotypes exist for a reason (...) it's called common sense, you see 6 hooded black dudes walking towards you on the sidewalk, you cross to the other side, it's called "Minimizing risk."

Love the owned 9gag user in the comments

[–]freddy4940 9 points10 points ago

Really they're just feeding the troll.

[–]demenciacion 0 points1 point ago

probably a troll himself, basic counter-trolling

[–]The_Magnificent 13 points14 points ago

About the second quote, I just asked a black friend who used to be in a gang.

"Just continue walking on the same street. The moment you cross the street you are a target."

Showing fear is never good.

[–]KenuR 2 points3 points ago

That depends on how you look. You can look as a target no matter what side of street you are on.

[–]Fidena 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I should actively try to be at their mercy instead of proactively try to get safer. Fuck that, carry a gun.

[–]konechiwa -2 points-1 points ago

did you hear that everybody? HE KNOWS A BLACK GUY!!! WHO USED TO BE IN A GANG!!!!!!!!!!

[–]The_Magnificent -2 points-1 points ago

Because having a black friend who used to be in a gang isn't relevant to the quote?

[–]Chaings 0 points1 point ago

Yea i dont know, that sounds like it could go both ways, the guys might get offended that you didnt show fear, they should do a national geographic special on this. Gangstas in da Wild amirite?

[–]The_Magnificent 0 points1 point ago

It might, but on average I guess you're saver just continuing as you are. As soon as you move to the other side of the street you show fear, and if you're white and they are black, you show perceived racism.

And, groups of people, whether white or black or anything in between, are often more likely to mess with you if they think you are scared of them.

So far, I haven't once walked to another side, and not once got into any trouble.

[–]fateswarm 3 points4 points ago

To the Pitchfork it is.

[–]ated9000 -1 points0 points ago

Does it really matter? I'm sure most of the post titles here don't actually apply to the OP, they title it that to make the gif funnier.

[–]strebalicious 29 points30 points ago

I had this college course about the history of racism. There was one black guy in the class (he was from Namibia). Every time (which was maybe three times, total) the professor said "Nigger", the whole class would look at this guy to make sure it was alright. He would just shrug and everyone would turn back around.

[–]Jigsus 4 points5 points ago

why is Namibia in quotes?

[–]strebalicious 14 points15 points ago

Because I'm a ruh-tard.

[–]Jigsus 28 points29 points ago

I thought it was code for Detroit or something.

[–]pmille31 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it is!

[–]PovertyPoint 14 points15 points ago

What was the joke?

[–]Pablo_Picasso 19 points20 points ago

What's faster than a black man running with a tv?

His little brother with the DVD player

[–]mardob 18 points19 points ago

I think this joke needs a technological update.

[–]wedsxcrfv 7 points8 points ago

Replace TV with Macbook and DVD player with iPhone, done

[–]nateify 1 point2 points ago

His little brother with the Roku box

FTFY...?

[–]geetar_man 9 points10 points ago

I only watch this .gif to see whether or not it is playing in reverse. It can make all the difference.

Realizing your new girlfriend is a trap..

[–]OldWorldBlues 2 points3 points ago

[–]HabitOfCreature 4 points5 points ago

Telling racist jokes can be more about ripping on your friends the way you would if they were fat, skinny, tall, short, a nerd or bit dim. Ripping on each other can bring friends closer. I think it's because you're saying that these things don't bug you.

[–]sickaments 3 points4 points ago

When I lay a silent but deadly fart in a crowded elevator

[–]asator -2 points-1 points ago

Thank you. Seriously. If we could all just lighten up and learn to laugh at ourselves the world would be a better place. Unless of course the person telling the joke is actually a racist, in which case, fuck that guy.

[–]ibowls 15 points16 points ago

How can you know the person isn't actually racist? And more importantly, how can you know that the people listening to the joke aren't reinforcing their racist beliefs?

[–]Daniel_Laixer 4 points5 points ago

It will reinforce racist beliefs for the people who takes it seriously

[–]shamecamel 1 point2 points ago

it's not hard to figure out if someone's actually racist. The trick is, racism isn't about what jokes you tell- racism is more about letting somebody's race determine how you act around them, or treat them. That includes censoring yourself and trying your best not to offend them by walking on proverbial glass. In the end, the best policy is to trust somebody to get the fact that you aren't racist- they're not dumb and can probably figure it out.

[–]asator -1 points0 points ago

Spend 5 minutes with them and I'll bet you can tell. A reaction of "Har-d-har-har" probably means they are racists. A reaction of, "Man, that's fuuuuuucked up!" probably means that they aren't. And more importantly, I wouldn't surround myself with racists, so the second part is a non-issue. I have a fairly good idea that, when my black friends, or my Iranian friends, or my Asian friends make jokes about their own culture, they have a pretty good sense of humor.

But you're absolutely right. Sometimes people play that shit like they aren't racist, when in fact they are. But like I said, spend a little time around a person and I'm sure you'll be able to tell. If it's all in good fun, laugh and be merry. If you detect actual hate speech, kick that fucker to the curb and say, "Man, that shit ain't right!"

The most fucked up black jokes I've ever heard were told to me by my downstairs neighbor, Rob, the biggest, blackest, nicest, ganja-smokenest motherfucker you'd ever want living downstairs from you. Seriously, his weed smoke use to come up through the vents. He'd always be like, "Man, if I'm buggin you wit the dank, let me know man and I'll keep that shit down." Rob was fucking awesome. First time he told me a black joke I didn't know whether to laugh or what. But he was like, "Man, listen. You gotta lighten up. I ain't out to fuck wit you or nuttin, I just like to have fun. We all gotta occupy this tiny-ass space, and when you live wit a mothafucka you gotta be able to joke around an laugh at yourself a little bit, you know what I'm sayin? I bet you know all kinds white boy irish jokes and shit, huh?"

Rob was fucking awesome and I miss him to death. Not just cuz he was super nice and watched out for me and my girlfriend, but because he was honest and up front. And because he was able to laugh at himself.

Anyway, like I said, spend a little time around a person and I'm sure you'll be able to tell if they are racists or not. If you can't, well then you need to work on your ability to read people.

Personally, I think it's easy to sense the malice that comes with actual racist comments/jokes/rhetoric. Maybe it's just me.

Sorry for the rambling, I'm drunk.

[–]trupakehd 2 points3 points ago

I think I might be in love with Rob. Just maybe.

[–]asator 5 points6 points ago

Rob was the fucking best. He told me one time, "Listen. If someone fuck wit you... just... look, I'm like a, like a.... like a fuckin' pit bull, man. I sit on the porch, and I don't fuck wit no one. I don't fuck wit no one! But if you fuck wit my own an I'll bite'cho ass as fast as a mothafucka. I don't play no games! You fuck wit my kin, you fuck wit me. If someone fuckin wit'chou or your baby girl, you let me know. I'll fuckin bite day ass. I'm not playing (my name)! You my boy. You right wit me. We in this shit togetha. This is our house, son. We gotta feel safe. And I want you and your baby girl to feel safe. We gotta protect our own."

The year after we moved, I ordered a Gameboy DS for my mum (gods rest her soul) for xmas. I called Rob and was like, "Dude, Rob, I ordered some shit and it's coming to my old address. Can you pick it up for me and keep it safe, and call me when it comes in?"

"Hell yeah, man! I'll keep that shit safe. I'll call you when it comes."

He called me two days later and we hung out. He got super high. A few months later I saw him at the St. Patrick's Day parade of all places. "Look at this Irish muthafucka here!", he said as he walked down the street.

I should really stop over and see that fucker. Maybe take my kid. He'd love to see that we have kids now.

[–]Cheese_Bits 0 points1 point ago

Rob sounds like an awesome guy!

Gameboy DS

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd -2 points-1 points ago

Racist people generally don't make humorous jokes about racism. At best they make overly offensive jokes. Racism is quite useful in humor and it's easy to be hilarious with it. Simply making a racial joke does not mean you're racist.

Racist jokes are not cool because racism is not something to laugh about. There are plenty of other jokes to tell, it's unnecessary to go there. I mean come on, it's the 21st century, let's get past that shit.
