wow....I need some context asap.

edit: found it

[–]Shucks88 18 points19 points ago

So he honestly thought the best time to take his hand off the bars and attention away from the road was at a blind corner on that tiny 2 lane highway?

[–]mnvcvfredfdf 20 points21 points ago

It looks like he was going too fast and had a bad angle of attack on the turn. In pic 10 he was at maximum lean, and not turning fast enough. From 10-14 he straightens up (stops turning) and is braking. He doesn't stop fast enough.

Unlike a car, motorcycles cannot slow down much while turning or they will fall over. They have to straighten out, then brake. If you enter a turn at the wrong speed you're in big trouble.

Slow Look Push Roll

[–]alphanovember 2 points3 points ago

He might also have been distracted by the photog.

[–]minichado 0 points1 point ago

Car breaking is also significantly improved when traveling in a straight line, traction is not divided between turning and breaking. But for bikes, any loss of traction on one wheel is a spill.. In his case, better he went over the vette and not under it?

yes.

[–]TurkFebruary 1 point2 points ago

I mean...makes sense right?

[–]curlsforgurls 16 points17 points ago

That really escalated quickly between pics 18 and 19

When two midlife crises combine.

[–]newtrawn 3 points4 points ago

I laughed way too hard at this

[–]minichado 15 points16 points ago

Saw this, knew immediately it was the dragons tail. All the riders out there are idiots. Either sports bikes going way too fast and clipping the other lane, or people who can't control their bikes drifting into other lanes... I went there in my car and nearly went off the road several times just dodging bikes (much like the Vette tried to do)

[–]InflamedFlamingo 8 points9 points ago

Same here. Awesome road, but too many people fail to put value in the mantra "DON'T CROSS THE YELLOW LINES." You have to respect that road or it will hand you your ass. There are skilled riders up there though, I had the pleasure of meeting several locals on their late night romp.

My last trip up there I ran up on a fatal accident. A cruiser and sportbike collided head on.

[–]minichado 0 points1 point ago

I went for fun but honestly I'd never go back. Glad my wife and I made it out in one piece!

Go on a week day in the winter (when not snowing or raining). It's dead. Me and some buddies drove it in a caravan and barely passed a single soul.

[–]seth11111 9 points10 points ago

What a dumbass, stay on your side of the road if you want to live.

[–]AJfromLA 0 points1 point ago

And dont spend so much time trying to get a glamour shot.

[–]AJfromLA 2 points3 points ago

I have gone to the Dragon for the last 3 years with a Volvo C30 forum I am active in. And every year without fail we almost have or witness and head-on from someone distracted trying to get a good picture.

Or bikers/drivers trying to set speed records on that road. Its a deadly road when not respected.

shitty

[–]redditor9000 1 point2 points ago

Look at his reflection on the corvette. Definitely a SUPERMAN!

[–]JoePants -1 points0 points ago

Did anyone else notice how the motorcycle rider, when he realized he was in the wrong lane and headed for impact, just froze and rode it into the car?

Sensory overload, yo.

[–]dagbrown 0 points1 point ago

It looked like target fixation to me. Instead of looking where it was safe to ride, he looked at the car he was heading towards.

Also, he'd probably put less than a thousand miles on that completely ridiculous bike he was riding (it was a Triumph Thunderbird which comes with a completely-stupid 1.8L engine).

[–]guyal 0 points1 point ago

Just wondering, what makes you say that a 1.8L engine is stupid?

Edit: please see my reply to tranceyan, as I think you'll find it quite informative.

[–]tranceyan 1 point2 points ago

On a motorcycle? It's just ridiculous. A litre engine is enough for either an extremely sporty ride or an extremely comfortable one (high torque, no need to shift down even with two passengers and lots of luggage). Anything over that is basically overkill. See also: Triumph Rocket

[–]guyal 1 point2 points ago

You've made a mistake in assuming that engine size is equal to power. This is not the case. A 1000cc sport bike would have far more power than an 1800cc cruiser. I'll give you an example:

The Triumph Thunderbird 1700cc outputs 97bhp. With a wet weight of 339kg, this gives a power to weight ratio of 0.28614 bhp/kg.

Now consider the Honda Fireblade, a typical "litrebike". Outputting 158 bhp with a wet weight of 199kg, this bike's power to weight ratio is 0.79397 bhp/kg.

There you go. 0.3 compared with 0.8. Quite a difference, no? And that's taking into account the weight- even if you just look at the raw horsepower of these two bikes (97 and 158 respectably), you can see a noticeable difference of over 50%.

As such, don't assume when you see a massive engine cylinder size that it means the bike will be able to race a jet.

[–]tranceyan 1 point2 points ago

I did mention torque.. which is where the difference lies (check out the linked stats, 112 vs 156 Nm - also, check out the usable power band on both and you will see the difference is even more extreme). And my point was that after some point, there is enough torque and everything above that is basically overkill. Unless you often give rides to medium-sized elephants.

[–]minichado 1 point2 points ago

unless you often give rides to medium-sized elephants

Have you seen a lot of cruiser riders lately?

[–]tranceyan 1 point2 points ago

Hah! :)

[–]NecroSyphilis 1 point2 points ago

This is a great real life example of how your survival instincts work against you when presented with a dangerous situation on a bike. When a person panics they generally hit the brakes and gold the handle bars tight which straightens up the bike. He could have avoided this by accelerating to turn more into the corner. Twist of the wrist, a video on good riding technique goes into this in better detail.

[–]mrbonk71 3 points4 points ago

Except for the fact that he's on a cruiser, which was already at max angle of bank by that stage anyway. Check out the series of images from the source site. This is the primary reason that I always said when I'm too knackered to throw my leg over a sport bike, I'll give up riding (so I did). A mate of mine continually offered me a ride of his Harley until I grudgingly accepted. First corner I got to, I had everything dragging on the ground and went "Wow...this is so not for me!".

[–]dagbrown 1 point2 points ago

The middle ground between sport bikes and cruisers is the venerable naked class. I have a naked bike and it's excellent for escaping situations like Mr. Midlife-Crisis found himself in. He probably wouldn't have considered it, of course, though, because my naked bike has a 250cc engine, which would naturally be way too wimpy for him to even consider thinking about.

Naked bikes are excellent. I love them. They're perfect for people who don't want to ride sports bikes any more, but would still enjoy riding.
