And suddenly, sepia

[–]passerby5 79 points80 points ago

Instantly Instagram.

[–]brown_felt_hat 31 points32 points ago

InstaInstagram?

[–]Nuggetry 16 points17 points ago

A more instantaneous gram than usual.

[–]xSPYXEx 5 points6 points ago

Well that got meta as quickly as I had assumed it would.

[–]MostInterestingDuck 1 point2 points ago

So that's how the deloreon travelled back in time, makes sense, they were known for leaking oil.

[–]flaskandbeaker 0 points1 point ago

Very vintage

[–]Early-Cuyler 107 points108 points ago

And suddenly, sepia I'm in China.

Edit: Who knew joking about China's pollution problem would offend so many? You're a fickle mistress, Reddit.

[–]Dobott 23 points24 points ago

I'm pretty sure it was assumed you were being racist and referring as to the yellowish coating with the people of china.

[–]Early-Cuyler 27 points28 points ago

That could be. Didn't think about that.

[–]KiloNiggaWatt 17 points18 points ago

Congratulations, you're not racist.

[–]CitizenBonks 4 points5 points ago

I think you guessed it right. The more I think about it the more I can see how someone might interpret it that way.

[–]KilowogTrout 8 points9 points ago

Ah. People are dumb.

[–]KilowogTrout 22 points23 points ago

Whoa, a lot of people didn't like this.

[–]Kevlar_socks 9 points10 points ago

as a chinese guy, need more smog.

[–]flying-sheep 14 points15 points ago

maybe they didn’t understand it and just thought it was random.

[–]Drawtaru 15 points16 points ago

Maybe they're not disliking the comment, maybe they're just disliking China's pollution levels.

[–]Dr_fish 3 points4 points ago

I was saying boo-urns.

[–]A_Stupid_Cat 11 points12 points ago

It's okay, I still love you.

[–]Hajile_S 2 points3 points ago

Maybe, like me, they know that sepia only occurs naturally in Mexico.

Edit: I suppose I should have learned my lesson: No, I was not being racist; I was referencing Breaking Bad.

[–]Lolworth -1 points0 points ago

Actually China is very much like this. The fine coating of dusty, sandy orange stuff gets EVERYWHERE. If you don't seal up your doors and windows it blows through your keyhole and everything into your house.

[–]deruke 360 points361 points ago

Was this shot taken in Mexico?

[–]MaxOpower 30 points31 points ago

Well that was 163 points of karma that I'm not getting.

[–]I_am_Mexico 25 points26 points ago

There, an upvote from México itself.

[–]arkanemusic 44 points45 points ago

I'm glad I get this reference.

[–]qnnplmr 217 points218 points ago

[–]SpinkickFolly 170 points171 points ago

[–]qnnplmr 69 points70 points ago

Mmmm... getting there. Is this from a thread somewhere? I mean it's obviously shopped, the sky is sepia toned.

[–]InNomine 295 points296 points ago

In breaking bad all the shots of mexico are in sepia so people can tell if it's in new mexico america or mexico.

[–]qnnplmr 58 points59 points ago

Ohhh thanks! Man, I'm slow. I've watched all of that show thus far and never caught on. Now I'm up to speed :)

[–]redds56101[!] 198 points199 points ago

[–]AQUA2 26 points27 points ago

Fucking thank you.

[–]i_rape_moms 8 points9 points ago

While we're on the subject...What's Breaking Bad about?

A middle aged man who's apparently travelling often to Mexico...You just picked my curiosity.

[–]Quinn3333 11 points12 points ago

A middle aged man, who is a teacher, who cooks meth- And travels to Mexico.

[–]AdrianBrony 11 points12 points ago

you need to watch it. now. the first four seasons are on netflix and it's fantastic.

A high school chemistry teacher who is barely supporting his family learns he has lung cancer and will probably die from it.

He wants to leave something behind for his family so he starts making crystal meth using his skills as a brilliant chemist. His product is superior to everything out there but there are complications with distribution as this squeaky clean outsider becomes more and more involved with the drug trade.

the longer the series goes on, the more terrible things he has to do to stay in the industry. To complicate matters, his brother in law is a very respected DEA agent so he has to keep his job a secret from everyone.

[–]495 5 points6 points ago

piqued your curiosity, rather

themoreyouknow.jpg

[–]JavaPants 3 points4 points ago

A middle aged man who is a Nobel prize winning chemist turned high school chemistry teacher gets terminal lung cancer and decides to make crystal meth in order to leave money for his family after he dies.

[–]Lolworth 1 point2 points ago

And while we're at it, why is it called "Breaking Bad"?

Those two words don't fit together.

[–]liberalis 1 point2 points ago

/r/breakingbad It seems perhaps you may have not been to this subreddit, where every nuance of Breaking Bad is broken down to its minutest detail. Ignore the memes, and read the storyline posts.

[–]lemonkster 0 points1 point ago

Ohhh. And here I thought the joke was LA ELECTRIC SUPPLY in the background.

[–]Saint947 1 point2 points ago

Really, it started with the movie Traffic. All the scenes in the US are blue tinted, and shot in a modern look. All the scenes shot in Mexico are sepia / yellow toned, and shot on oldschool 8mm with super cheap looking subtitles to give it that 3rd world feel.

[–]Fleme 42 points43 points ago

Breaking Bad. Every scene shot in Mexico is in sepia, whereas the scenes in and around ABQ are all in regular colors.

[–]qnnplmr 12 points13 points ago

Ohhh thanks! Man, I'm slow. I've watched all of that show thus far and never caught on. Now I'm up to speed :)

[–]Groke 23 points24 points ago

Deja vu

[–]jhoff23[S] 5 points6 points ago

Sir, I took this photo on my iPhone at work at uploaded it right after. It is oil draining from a car that I am standing under.

[–]qnnplmr 9 points10 points ago

No no, not your post OP. The comment above mine.

[–]jhoff23[S] 2 points3 points ago

Ahh, my bad.

[–]speaker_fan_1337 3 points4 points ago

[–]neverboredhere 1 point2 points ago

Only the middle part is Mexico.

[–]comrade_canada 86 points87 points ago

So that's how you go to 1970

[–]NonSequiturEdit 11 points12 points ago

Yep. Colors first invaded our world in the nineteenth century, but it took them a long time to infiltrate the entire planet. In the '70s, the yellow factions still maintained dominance, as this was well before the Blue/Orange Accords of the late 1990s - which itself built upon the turbulent Color Rights movement of the previous decade, where colors broke ranks and began running rampant and doing all sorts of crazy shit together.

[–]WcJessen 6 points7 points ago

Yeah what is this "Instagram" nonsense everyone talks about? This just looks like a picture from the 70's. Maybe I'm old.

[–]Mastaj3di 257 points258 points ago

We could make glasses that contain a thin layer of oil between two pieces of glass housed in stupidly large frames and make millions selling them to hipsters at absurd prices.

[–]Nithel 206 points207 points ago

So they would work kinda exactly like sunglasses?

[–]Kevinmeowertons 131 points132 points ago

STOP STEALING OUR MARKET

[–]RPrevolution 42 points43 points ago

But OIL

[–]Fallout 54 points55 points ago

Butt oil?

[–]danguro 19 points20 points ago

brown gold!

[–]solzhen 11 points12 points ago

Tex's Ass Tea

[–]WithForte 6 points7 points ago

I like that this pun thread fizzled out not because there were no more puns, but because everyone involved is operating under the restrictions of the song.

[–]Bluedit5 45 points46 points ago

You should go on Shark Tank.

[–]thecoworker123 12 points13 points ago

I want 51% of the hipster magnet for $750,000

[–]vijrox 2 points3 points ago

But Mr Wonderful will give you a million for no equity as long as you give him a $3 royalty on every $4 pair of sunglasses you sell!

[–]thecoworker123 2 points3 points ago

I'll give you $1.5 million for 51%

[–]vijrox 1 point2 points ago

Daymond, Cuban and Robert: "I'm out."

[–]thecoworker123 2 points3 points ago

I am prepared to give you half of my karma for 51% of your hipster glasses

[–]limer 3 points4 points ago

Oil tank

[–]dogstarchampion 10 points11 points ago

Already done, it's called "HD Wrap Arounds"

[–]VinRayd 7 points8 points ago

Oh the gullible people in that commercial.

[–]dogstarchampion 15 points16 points ago

THE WORLD IS SO MUCH CRISPER FROM THIS MAGICAL ACCESSORY THAT IS OBSTRUCTING MY VISION EVER SO SLIGHTLY!

[–]rifk 1 point2 points ago

I think that HD sunglasses are designed for people that have vision problems like near/far-sightedness, so they would do nothing for people with proper vision anyway.

[–]poo_22 20 points21 points ago

What if you make a lens filter that contains oil between two plates of glass, but you can rotate it and the pieces slide apart with more oil being sucked in from a reservoir. This creates a thicker layer of oil and your filter has more of an effect. An adjustable filter! Also you could swap out the oil for different colors. I should patent this shit.

[–]baculumsucker 6 points7 points ago

They came up with this several years ago, but it was used for adjustable strength glasses for people in third world countries. It allows you to make really cheap lenses that can adjust to someone's near sightedness or farsightedness.

[–]Pravusmentis 2 points3 points ago

/r/crazyideas brother

[–]liberalis 0 points1 point ago

Now see in HD!!!!

[–]jojjo223 0 points1 point ago

Its like a live, even more instant version of instagram.

[–]wtfisdisreal 565 points566 points ago

Instagram is leaking.

[–]REDDITvTIDDER 193 points194 points ago

You're supposed to get a hipster change every 30,000 miles or this happens.

[–]lurkingallday 54 points55 points ago

Wait too long, they start smoking.

[–]hdooster 12 points13 points ago

That's nothing, when the pipes start breaking you've got real trouble.

[–]Squid-Bastard 12 points13 points ago

"well, here's your main problem, your hipster's altern(ative fashion)ator is leaking pabst at a steady rate"

[–]Xeeke 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, his scarf is clearly worn down too far. You're gonna need to buy a whole new smug, self righteous attitude. And those aren't cheap.

[–]Phallic 2 points3 points ago

Instagram is the least "hipster" thing I can imagine.

Hipster would be to take photos with a film camera and then develop them in your own darkroom.

[–]PartyBusGaming 81 points82 points ago

I guess this would be called an... oil filter.

[–]SpectralFlame5 4 points5 points ago

[–]PartyBusGaming 3 points4 points ago

[–]Lost_in_the_woods 20 points21 points ago

My god!

If you passed through that, it would* take you back in time to the 70's!

WE HAVE DISCOVERED PORTALS

edit: 12 hours later, nobody corrected the fact that it said "it's would take you back in time"

[–]RommelTJ 2 points3 points ago

I tried to go through one of these portals... I was highly disappointed.

[–]GARlactic 19 points20 points ago

What kind of car is this? My oil reservoirs always drained in a single stream rather than this cascade like yours. Unless this is the transmission oil or something.

[–]jhoff23[S] 15 points16 points ago

It's a ford explorer. There is actually a shield on the crossmember to stop the oil from going everywhere, and when it hits that shield, it looks like this.

[–]hotrodllsc 1 point2 points ago

Came in here to post this. I've actually considered taking this picture.

[–]fattmable 0 points1 point ago

that seem like it would just make a huge mess... what year explorer?

[–]semanc 3 points4 points ago

Its probably hitting some cross member causing it to do that. Some Dodge Durangos do this.

[–]GARlactic 7 points8 points ago

Seems like poor design.

[–]semanc 1 point2 points ago

It definitely is. You have to use a dog bone just to get at the drain plug.

[–]jimaug87 0 points1 point ago

That's because it is. The engineers don't care.

[–]KiloNiggaWatt 2 points3 points ago

It's not that they don't care. I can guarantee they do, but sometimes other things are more important.

[–]Xeeke 1 point2 points ago

There are some trucks where the exhaust pipe wraps around right in front of oil drain plug. This causes the oil to hit the exhaust, slash everywhere and smoke like crazy. It's horrible. Don't even get me started on the Subaru ring of fire.

[–]raydio27 0 points1 point ago

It's engine oil; transmission fluid is a pinkish red.

[–]firebadmattgood 3 points4 points ago

Only in an auto. Most manuals use gear oil, which is basically a really heavy weight engine oil.

[–]omarfw 1 point2 points ago

That's what I thought. What car drains oil like this?

[–]Gigawatz 51 points52 points ago

I'm reporting this for being too interesting.

[–]Mackelsaur 11 points12 points ago

It took me a good 5-10 seconds to understand what was happening here. Real life Sepia filter!

[–]MrShow 8 points9 points ago

You have to drain the oil to change the sepia filter.

[–]meyouandmyfriends 4 points5 points ago

Maybe i´m an idiot but I still don´t understand

[–]weaver2109 2 points3 points ago

Oil is draining out of the engine/transmission of a car, the reason it's a thin, clear sheet is probably because the pan was taken off instead of the drain plug.

[–]DatBlackStar 1 point2 points ago

Wtf are those black stripes?? So confuuuused.

[–]jhoff23[S] 2 points3 points ago

That's the oil lol. I don't really know how to explain it. By a lucky chance, the oil fit the shop door perfectly.

[–]jakek23 27 points28 points ago

Wow that oil is super clean! What vehicle is this from?

[–]joetromboni 13 points14 points ago

in Mexico, they are all Ford Piñatas

[–]redpenquin 4 points5 points ago

Since the undercarriage looks like it does, the car looks like it's at least a 2000's model of something, so a good chance it might be synthetic oil. Synthetic looks amazingly clean even after 4,000 miles.

[–]microcrash 3 points4 points ago

And in most cases you don't have to change your oil after 4,000 you can wait to 7-10,000 depending on the car and engine.

[–]yousedditreddit 3 points4 points ago

regardless of oil type, you change it when the car calls for it, the maintenance intervals are in your service manuals

[–]KiloNiggaWatt 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it's more about replacing the filter than the oil when using good oil. Even if the oil's still serviceable, the filter probably won't be.

[–]pedro19 -1 points0 points ago

It should. 4k miles is next to nothing for a synthetic. In Europe it is very hard to find a new car that has an OCI of less than 9k miles with synthetic.

[–]MikhailTheFail 6 points7 points ago

looks like my computer through F.lux really late at night

[–]UncleHouse 3 points4 points ago

Walter and Jesse must be in Mexico again.

[–]mahh_nigga 2 points3 points ago

So this must be how they flashback to the 1950's in TV shows.

[–]LearnAndReflect 1 point2 points ago

Hipsters would love this

[–]Superparrotclub 1 point2 points ago

Who the fuck need Instagram for filters?

[–]I_Typo 0 points1 point ago

cool pic, dude. it's a really nice idea.

[–]makehermeme 1 point2 points ago

So thats how instagram filters work

[–]THE_GREAT_SHAZBOT 0 points1 point ago

They must've shot Moonrise Kingdom like this.

[–]Chazz1022 0 points1 point ago

Walk through the portal to an alternate reality.

[–]meandthebean 1 point2 points ago

Does oil always drain from a car in a cascade like that?

[–]meth_just_this_once 0 points1 point ago

So that's how Instagram works. Never knew.

[–]Doldrir 0 points1 point ago

See the world in vibrant HD!

[–]theamishllama 0 points1 point ago

Oil has very similar optical properties to glass. Thats why we use mineral oil in oil immersion microscopy.

[–]i_need_downvotes_now 1 point2 points ago

thats clean oil, they must get it changed frequently

[–]Alxe 0 points1 point ago

So that's how they made Fallout New Vegas...

[–]Mandrew338 0 points1 point ago

So that's how instagram works..

[–]theGreatGoodbye 0 points1 point ago

I hate Instagram.

[–]skeletalcarp 1 point2 points ago

What kind of car drains the oil in a sheet like that rather than a spout? That's just bizarre. Shenanigans is underway, methinks.

[–]BeerPowered 0 points1 point ago

Colors are so beautiful.

[–]Method-Man -1 points0 points ago

So that's how Instagram works!

[–]gamekeeper1 0 points1 point ago

Gives a whole new meaning to 'oil filter'!

[–]wombtomb 0 points1 point ago

So thats why the 21st century is so blu.

[–]andrewwithnumbers 0 points1 point ago

why exactly is the oil draining in that wide of a pattern?

[–]btpo98 0 points1 point ago

Is that a portal to Mexico?

[–]theunhappypanda 0 points1 point ago

It's actually a portal to a sepia toned dimension.

[–]alexthes0ck 0 points1 point ago

So that's how they film Breaking Bad.

[–]eddiegratis 0 points1 point ago

[–]CreekRunner 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that's either a v8 explorer, mountaineer or aviator.

[–]nikchi 0 points1 point ago

The tint harkens back to a time when oil was cheap. And the draining oil further solidifies this point

[–]argusromblei 0 points1 point ago

GTA IV is just oil vision

[–]litterbin 0 points1 point ago

This picture is just absolutely amazing, so good that my whole body shivers in euphoria!

[–]Ladicius 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a portal to Mexico.

[–]Balls2TheFloor 0 points1 point ago

I think that's a 2500HD where the exhaust runs right in front of the plug. I think... So don't bash me but I'm pretty sure it's that truck. I also think that I might be a Lincoln navigator or aviator because some of them have have that splash thing in the way. Either way I like how that picture looks.

[–]lenswipe 0 points1 point ago
