So I found the average link karma that every repost of this specific gif based on angelathiest's comment and this one, and it is 152.1463 pts, or at least 100 karma with every repost. This approximation of >100 link karma per repost is true for 37% of all of the past reposts of this gif. The average of the 37% with >100 link karma is 366.66, or 366 pts.

TL;DR: If you decide to repost this specific gif again within the next month, you have about a 1 in 3 chance of getting about ~350 link karma, on average.

Reposts aren't just despised on reddit because people have seen them before. It's mostly about people abusing it for karma and taking credit for things that aren't their ideas. Yes they're "valueless internet points", but many of us want there to be a higher level of integrity to the anonymity of the internet. It's why users like karmanaut Trapped_in_reddit, who generate karma by copying top comments in reposts are looked down upon.

Also, think of the converse. If /r/funny was filled with nothing but pages and pages of the same jokes you've seen over and over again, would you still visit? The anti-reposters are pretty much the only thing preventing that from happening.

Still you see reposts on the front page everyday. Whenever I up or down vote I always remember that part of redditquette went something like 'a down pre doesn't necessarily mean you don't like the post, it just means you don't think it should be on the top page.

However, I think that the reason why reddit isn't flooded with the same joke over and over is the downvote/upvote system, not the people complaining about reposts.

My point is that it has nothing to do with who has or hasn't seen it before. It has to do with people taking credit for things they didn't create. There's a difference between posting "I found this story on the internet and thought I'd share it because it's funny" and taking someone else's story and saying "So this happened to me the other day". That difference has to do with honesty, integrity, and fairness to content creators.

The internet is an open environment, with relatively few rules regarding behavior, and while there may not be specific regulations prohibiting the wrongful claim to certain content on this site, that doesn't mean that there isn't anything ethically wrong about it. That is why people are upset by reposts.

IMO, Redditors don't have to repost it again, they do it purely for karma. But networks can't just keep cranking out endless OC. And it's cheaper to catch reruns than it is to go out and rent/pay for a stream for customers. Just my thoughts on it.

What "way" was I suggesting? I was being serious, I didn't post it just to be an asshole or be different. If i'm wrong then I'm wrong but, just my opinion, networks have a schedule that they need to fill. Redditors have the option of just not [re]posting stuff (i.e. there's no need for it).

One of the reasons for reruns is for people that missed it the first time. Another reason is maybe someone wants to see it again. Same can be applied here. Once something falls off the front page it is basically lost. How many time have your browsed your "liked" history? I've rarely done that, and I don't do much upvoting anyway so I will still miss content.

Anyway a lot of these so called "reposts" are new to me and a lot other people.

The only time I get annoyed at reposts is when I see several of the same post one the front page at the same time. This is very uncommon these days and is usually the result of breaking news which is understandable and even useful, but it used to happen a lot more often. Now that I'm thinking about it, reddit has always been really good at keeping the same content from showing up on the front page at the same time. I think it was Digg had that issue early on and it took them a few months to iron that out. But this is all ancient history.

While, I too, have seen this reposted many times. Every Wolfpack should occasionally be reminded of The Gentleman's Agreement.
