The term "a homeless" makes me uncomfortable.

[–]StreetSage 24 points25 points ago

Thank you. It bothers me too.

[–]justdowhatitellyou 2 points3 points ago

Don't be such a gay

[–]GangsterMail 4 points5 points ago

I prefer 'free-range' human

[–]muddzm 13 points14 points ago

Yes, but "DIFERENCE" doesn't bother anyone?

[–]AivasVilates 0 points1 point ago

the only things about this image that don't bother me are the easy to read font colors and lack of jpeg

[–]Assistantshrimp 0 points1 point ago

I thought you were referring to the title rather than the picture at first and I was already getting my pitchfork out.

[–]Black_Apalachi 5 points6 points ago

How many can you jump over?

[–]Inamanlyfashion 4 points5 points ago

Ollie the magic bum?

[–]Richie_16 3 points4 points ago

Isn't the correct term "outdoors men?"

[–]beccaonice 0 points1 point ago

OP is dedicated to phrasing is that way, it's in the image and the title.

[–]phliuy -2 points-1 points ago

how about "a black", "an asian", "whites", etc?

[–]JesusSwallows 11 points12 points ago

I never hear "a black", "a white", or "a homeless". I think there are only certain adjectives that sound ok as nouns. "A German" or "a Canadian" sound fine; "a French" or "a Japanese" sound weird.

[–]JustRuss79 3 points4 points ago

That's funny...A Canadian sounds like a national identifier while A French sounds like a slur. Interesting, I wonder if that is me projecting or just the way the words run together?

[–]bric_a_brac 0 points1 point ago

Germans, French, Canadian, and Japanese are nouns. They are a people as well as a language. When people use adjectives as nouns, they are either displaying ignorance, disgust, or elitism. People who refer to others as "a black" or "a homeless" aren't doing so because they don't understand language. They either have no experience with that group or consider themselves superior to that group.

So, it doesn't just sound weird, it's also usually a sign of ignorance and/or prejudice.

[–]Waidawut 5 points6 points ago

French is also an adjective, not a noun--the noun would be Frenchman (or French person). The way to tell is to see whether it can be pluralized, which you can check by using the word to mean "the people of <x> nation":

For France, you would say "The French," where French is an adjective modifying the implicit "people." For Germany, you would say "The Germans," where Germans is a plural noun, or "The German People," where German functions as an adjective. You would not say "The German," though, because that would mean a singular person from Germany.

So: English, French, Black, White, Homeless, etc. are only adjectives;

Whereas German, Canadian, African American, etc. are nouns that can also function as adjectives.

As bric_a_brac said, using a word which is only an adjective as a noun (or visa-versa: cf. the Republicans' insistent use of the phrase "The Democrat Party") effectively says "I don't care enough about x group to refer to them properly."

When you say "a homeless" instead of "a homeless person" you are, by removing the "person," implicitly demoting them from person-hood. I'm not sure why this same thing doesn't happen when you use a plural adjective to implicitly mean "the <x> people," but there you go.

Sorry for being so long-winded!

[–]JustRuss79 0 points1 point ago

I find it funny that in the UK they refer to peoples situation or style in the same way they refer to their profession.

"So a Priest, a Rabbi, an Emo, a Homeless and a Hipster walk into a bar"

[–]OilySalmon 5 points6 points ago

Finish the joke.

[–]JustRuss79 16 points17 points ago

Um okay..lets see here...the Priest orders a scotch, the Rabbi has wine, the Emo asks for something to kill the pain, the Homeless takes a bath in the sink and the Hipster left this joke 5 minutes ago, he's already into the next one.

[–]OilySalmon 1 point2 points ago

I'm surprised at how well that turned out.

[–]JustRuss79 1 point2 points ago

I think I was more surprised than you, I should try improv more often

[–]Aurilion 0 points1 point ago

I thought he did finish the joke. Bars and beer are too popular for hipsters

[–]rawbamatic 54 points55 points ago

Since when did "homeless" become a noun?

[–]suspiciously_calm 11 points12 points ago

Yeah. Just because you can verb nouns doesn't mean that you can noun adjectives.

[–]stoy4nov 8 points9 points ago

verb nouns

So meta.

[–]UnorthodoxGentleman 0 points1 point ago

Substantives bro.

[–]suspiciously_calm 1 point2 points ago

Can you substantiate that?

[–]UnorthodoxGentleman 0 points1 point ago

Occurs more often in Romance languages, but substantives are essentially adjectives that are used as nouns. Examples would be "Give to the poor." The poor...what? The object "people" is implied, so it's really "Give to the poor (people)." Or "The good, the bad, and the ugly." Really it's "The good (things), the bad (things), or the ugly (things)."

[–]NorShallMySword 8 points9 points ago

The only other person I know of who has used the term 'a homeless' was Karl Pilkington.

[–]Black_Apalachi -1 points0 points ago

Since Cartman jumped over one.

[–]gabpalves 14 points15 points ago

This man is a brazilian homeless and ex-model with mental problems that became famous last week after his photo and history were posted on facebook and appeared on tv... Quite sad story

[–]hipster_response 234 points235 points ago

'Hipster' is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else's authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself. It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker. Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you've probably sensed the pattern on your own). Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, ironic Them. You can't define what that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That's because you don't use 'hipster' to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you. The twist, of course, is that if it weren't for your own insecurities, nothing that a 'hipster' could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - 'Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I'm certainly not like those filthy hipsters!' - so you project those feelings onto others. tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

[–]Chuckieshere 46 points47 points ago

I don't even care that you copy and paste this every time you comment, I love it.

[–]hipster_response 26 points27 points ago

Me neither. I, of course, didn't write this. But the first time I read it, it rang so true I saved it in notepad and have always wanted to use it for such a purpose. The word 'hipster' is thrown around left and right with no real thought. Perhaps this gets a few people questioning why they like what they like, and how they treat others who may not appear as they think they ought. And of course a lot of people angrily downvote me. Either way, I like this job.

*Edited "either to "neither" to get the stick out of tangopoppers ass.

[–]kidkush 13 points14 points ago

You're not a hipster if you have a job! Get him boys!!!

EDIT: And they use Windows! Grabs a pitchfork

[–]NewClearWinter 5 points6 points ago

Unemployment is too mainstream these days.

[–]Tyrone-asaurus 5 points6 points ago

While I agree with your over all point, as Trilling states authenticity is a state of being, while sincerity is the perception of your inner self by those around you. Therefore it could be said that so called "Hipsters" are indeed just people who strive to be authentic, therefore destroying this authenticity in the process.

[–]CranberryBogMonster 14 points15 points ago

I don't know why people are calling this a novelty account, because this is actually how I feel about the way people use the word hipster these days. I feel like I've seen it used to describe every single clothing choice, music preference, and vague action in existence. Everyone and no one is a hipster, apparently. Seems like a useless word at this point.

[–]beccaonice 14 points15 points ago

You like art? HIPSTER

You like a band that's not on the radio? HIPSTER

You enjoy artsy movies? HIPSTER

But if you like the mainstream? SHEEPLE

I don't know what the elusive middle ground is.

[–]EmperorNortonI 3 points4 points ago

It's in a special place where geniuses write satirical novelty accounts. The "middle ground" is just being able to laugh at the uselessness of the term while still hating the amorphous but pernicious attitudes it fails to describe.

[–]UncleTwinkleToes 0 points1 point ago

I got called a hipster the other day after I told one of my coworkers I loved the song "Night Call" by Kavinsky after I saw he had it on his mp3 player.

Apparently, because I knew about it without seeing the movie Drive it made me a hipster.

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point ago

You like art? HIPSTER

Corrected: Does the popularity of the art affect how you like it? HIPSTER

You like a band that's not on the radio? HIPSTER

C:If that band got airplay on the radio would you stop liking it? HIPSTER

You enjoy artsy movies? HIPSTER

C:But if everyone liked it, would you feel it necessary to point out you liked it before others? HIPSTER

But if you like the mainstream? SHEEPLE

Do you like the mainstream because it is liked by everyone and people won't think you're weird? SHEEPLE

I don't know what the elusive middle ground is.

THe elusive middle ground is not liking things because of its mainstream appeal or lack of appeal. I know a few 'REAL' hipsters, everything they do is because its quirky or surprising. What annoys people is the vanity and the denial of vanity at the same time. "I do what I want, but I'm deeply concerned about what you think about what I do"

[–]TrollyMcTrollster -1 points0 points ago

I don't know what the elusive middle ground is.

It's called NORMAL.

[–]beccaonice 2 points3 points ago

Normal is good, normal is best. Don't be unnormal.

[–]Clayburn 5 points6 points ago

Maybe this is the case around the world, but living in New York there's a pretty clear and definable hipster subculture. So, yes, maybe people misuse the term sometimes, but that doesn't mean it's fictional.

[–]3206 0 points1 point ago

Hipsters do exist though, they're the people who follow trends for the social status rather than genuine interest in what is trendy.

[–]bric_a_brac 2 points3 points ago

So, today's hipsters are yesterday's posers? I don't think we can ever truly quantify why people like what they like enough to make either of those terms have any meaning. Hipsters don't exist. It's simply a way for a person to illustrate how genuine and authentic their own tastes are by referencing a non-existent "other" whose tastes are not authentic.

[–]JustRuss79 5 points6 points ago

It is more like, a Poser just goes along with what is popular to be popular. A Hipster is on the bleeding edge of Poser, and as soon as it becomes mainstream they find it distasteful. Their identity is that they are better than the mainstream because they only like what is new and different, and because they liked what is popular before it was popular. I know several people who are like this, Hipsters exist, not that there is anything wrong with that. They only annoy me as much as any other classification or group of people.

[–]AllyoopMistrial 0 points1 point ago

Who cares, chief?

[–]3206 5 points6 points ago

I was making a comment on the topic at hand, isn't that the point of a discussion thread? Or would you prefer me to tirelessly flog dead horses?

[–]tylorjams 3 points4 points ago

I think the point is if someone you don't know dresses a certain way, acts a certain way, buys a certain thing and you find it so annoying that you feel the need to constantly comment about it it probably reflects some sort of insecurity on your part. Reddit is mostly a community of Internet "hipsters" who hate real life "hipsters" because of their own lack of social confidence. I use "hipster" with the reddit approved definition but as stated above, the term is too ambiguous to really mean anything at all.

[–]3206 -2 points-1 points ago

if someone you don't know dresses a certain way, acts a certain way, buys a certain thing and you find it so annoying that you feel the need to constantly comment about it it probably reflects some sort of insecurity on your part.

I don't know, I understand hating on people who start to like something just because it's trendy then contribute to ruining that thing.

Take Reddit for example, the explosive popularity of Reddit hasn't just meant it's no longer "obscure", the majority of new users have different tastes (like flogging dead horses way too much) than the users a few years ago, and the content and comments on the site backs me up on this.

Is it unreasonable for the older users to have preferred the content and comments which were posted a few years ago and hate on the people who have come in and ruined Reddit? I don't think that makes them insecure.

For another example, consider a band becoming more popular, yes some people are insecure about that and hate not being as obscure anymore, but other times the bands will alter the type of music they play to be more poppy, in such an instance I don't think hating on the new popularity of the band can entirely be classified by insecurity.

[–]JustRuss79 0 points1 point ago

Posers like something just because its trendy. Hipsters like things because they will become trendy. (ie Apple fanboys who stand in line for days to get the newest iPhone are hipsters. People who buy an iPhone to be cool without standing in line are Posers. People who buy an iPhone because they actually like it (normally the "not newest" model) and don't care what other people think about their choice in phone, are mainstream. Not to be confused with computer geeks who must have the newest hardware regardless of actual need. We are just geeks.

[–]beccaonice 1 point2 points ago

But... doesn't this apply to people who follow everything mainstream, because they want to "fit-in"?

Are fans of generic pop music and reality TV shows hipsters too?

[–]imacultclassic 0 points1 point ago

Eh, honestly most of the people that use the word hipster are probably classless slobs who don't have a fucking clue.

Believe me, there are definitely hipsters out there. And they are fucking awful.

[–]tangopopper 0 points1 point ago

It's a novelty account because he only does one thing, which is referenced in the account name.

[–]ryumast3r -3 points-2 points ago

Hipster doesn't necessarily describe a certain clothing style or musical preference. In OP's case, it might, but it is generally used to refer to someone who has the attitude of ".... before it was cool" and when it suddenly becomes "cool" it's too "mainstream" for them to like it anymore. Basically, it's someone who changes their opinion to be the opposite of whatever the majority hold at the time.

People tend to find this sort of behavior annoying, and, in my opinion rightfully so.

[–]skewedsound 4 points5 points ago

Someone who changes their opinion to be the opposite of whatever the majority hold at the time = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrarian

People falling out of love with a favourite band/artist because they evolve their sound away from what you initially enjoyed about them or because they adopt the latest in vogue musical genre or style in an attempt to garner more mainstream support, rather than continuing to plow what you perceived to be their own unique furrow = Perfectly normal.

Many music fans see their musical taste and favourite bands as a reflection of their own personality, so naturally when that band moves away from the sound that originally drew you to them, you stop being a fan and buying their records. Even in that situation, I doubt many people would throw out all the band's back catalogue and stop listening to them entirely. Most likely they would just stick to the 'old stuff', i.e when the music was still relevant to them or still said something to them about their life.

[–]ryumast3r 1 point2 points ago

...rather than continuing to plow what you perceived to be their own unique furrow = Perfectly normal.

I agree with this, that's not what a hipster does. For example, I didn't like how Ray William Johnson changed his show after he started getting huge amounts of subscribers (by this I mean comparatively). It had nothing to do with the subscriber count though, but rather his style changing. As Clayburn said, it's a pretentious attitude wherein they claim to be totally unique but are really just either contrarian or following some other trend.

[–]Clayburn 1 point2 points ago

It's more than a contrarian. It's a pretentiousness, an ironic claim of some unique creativity while following a trend to the letter.

[–]Stercu5 2 points3 points ago

I know someone who self identifies and ostentatiously tries to emulate "the hipster." From said friend, "She's a hipster, I wish I could be a hipster like her." (Said un-ironically, ironically) What say you?

[–]chainmailws6 1 point2 points ago

There are definitely worse things a person could aspire to be. So personally I don't give a shit.

[–]Stercu5 -1 points0 points ago

Neither do I, my response was simply " oh, okay." Just pointing out that the argument put forward is not entirely accurate.

[–]dhockey63 2 points3 points ago

but people actually brand themselves as hipsters, they claim to be hipsters

[–]Tyrannosaur 4 points5 points ago

I don't know why you're being down voted... On a college campus of 60k I've met a lot of people who consider themselves hipsters. Like self label. Shrug.

[–]YuRDeD 2 points3 points ago

I don't believe you.

[–]JustRuss79 -1 points0 points ago

didn't believe them before it was cool.

[–]MeatIsMeaty 3 points4 points ago

I realize that this is a novelty account, but I think the very last bit is very true.

...you are insecure about your own authenticity - 'Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I'm certainly not like those filthy hipsters!'

The opinions of others weigh heavily into whether you decide to like something. Before reddit, I didn't much care for cats.

[–]APWTSIS 6 points7 points ago

I still don't much care for cats

[–]maz-o -1 points0 points ago

that was too hard to read

[–]anarckissed 0 points1 point ago

[–]patentlyabsurd 0 points1 point ago

<shrug> I dunno, this is what I think of when I hear the word hipster... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVmmYMwFj1I

Or maybe just people who appear to be striving way to hard to be "unique".

[–]Jedimushroom 0 points1 point ago

I actually have a couple of friends who self-identify as Hipsters. Of course, they may be doing this ironically, but surely that's even more Hipster?

[–]SanityInAnarchy 0 points1 point ago

False on at least one count:

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster...

My brother wears emo-glasses. When I pointed this out to him, he took offense. "I am not an emo! I am a hipster!"

[–]HungarianFever 2 points3 points ago

Thank you.

[–]thefreq -1 points0 points ago

I define hipster as, "A person who takes too much pride in doing things that aren't the norm."

[–]feelsgoodonthedigits 17 points18 points ago

you are just as pretentious as the hipster because you actually took the time to make this shitty little picture for Reddit. If you pass judgement on a person based on their style of clothing you are what is wrong with society. The homeless are already homeless. There is no reason to try and belittle them further on the internet because most of them do not have access to it. pull your head out of you ass and lick the shit off of your lips. you are a cunt

[–]zanebob2 5 points6 points ago

He didn't make the picture. I saw it on a shitty funny pictures app someone showed me. OP's faggotry level is still off the charts though.

Honestly, in the Seattle-Portland-Vancouver area sometimes among the younger skinny people I have a really hard time telling the difference. [–]iratusamuru 0 points1 point ago

If you live on the street and can keep your hair that cleanly cut, I begin to question the reasons you are homeless.

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

Hipsters don't exist.

[–]Goldboy 0 points1 point ago

The difference between a reposter and a dick : one has balls.

[–]N1Nutta 0 points1 point ago

You forgot the Clark Kent glasses

[–]AaronG81 0 points1 point ago

Should be a blackberry. iPhone is too mainstream.

[–]evilpancake123 0 points1 point ago

please feel free to downvote me to oblivion but this is a fucking REPOST

[–]icenitribe 1 point2 points ago

[–]Richie_16 0 points1 point ago

According to Samsung commercials

[–]cave_de_simia 1 point2 points ago

He's probably homeless since he spent all of his money on an IPhone.

[–]LuckyDuck77 0 points1 point ago

Fuuuuucking reposts.

[–]Haleljacob 0 points1 point ago

also hipsters have homes

[–]Lemonator8976 0 points1 point ago

Me an my friends like to play a game called "Bum or Student" in Boulder, CO. It's where find an ambiguous person on the street and each of us has to guess whether he's a bum or a student. Then we ask the person if he is a student at the college or not.

Winner gets bragging rights, loser has to either 1) tell the student that he should drop out of college because he already looks like a bum or 2) tell the bum that he should go to college and get a real job.

[–]edgesrazor 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't the difference be a home?

[–]vivazeta -1 points0 points ago

I am rocking a galaxy s3 myself. I phones are too mainstream

[–]vivazeta 0 points1 point ago

You only downvoted me because you have never heard of it.

[–]UncleTogie 0 points1 point ago

Hey, OP... You forgot the food, safety, and the roof over his head. :P

[–]41571 1 point2 points ago

I can confirm that the homeless one is the one with the phone.

[–]sirclickalot 0 points1 point ago

The homeless man is on the right.

[–]neweralt 0 points1 point ago

I would have also accepted the addition of a walkman.

[–]THIS_IS_NOT_A_GAME 0 points1 point ago

[–]mask_salesman 0 points1 point ago

yeah I mean one is into things that are currently hip and the other doesn't have a home, exactly the same.

[–]stretch_nuts 0 points1 point ago

"a homeless".

[–]brutalny 0 points1 point ago

also, hipster is waiting for the next payout on his trust fund to buy new clothes.

[–]rossryan 0 points1 point ago

Now wander around a shop, and ask if they have a charger you can borrow to charge your iDevice.

[–]thatotherothergirl 0 points1 point ago

iPhone 4? Nope, still a homeless.

[–]ScanExam 0 points1 point ago

Homeless is not a noun; it's an adjective.

[–]Not_A_Hipster_ 1 point2 points ago

I actually saw a homeless man waiting out side a soup kitchen waiting for breakfast while I waited in my car for work to start. Fucker was on an iphone. While I still have a shitty feature phone. A man who probably pan handles and eats at a soup kitchen ruined my day.

[–]Islanduniverse 0 points1 point ago

Also not having a home...

[–]biotroll 0 points1 point ago

How the actual fuck does this get over a thousand karma every single day?

[–]AgroSaxon 0 points1 point ago

Living in Portland we have an overwhelming abundance of both of these types of folks and yes, it can get confusing. The smell will tip you off and one smokes old cig butts and the other smokes American Spirits.

[–]lolpopp 0 points1 point ago

these hipster jokes were never funny and they never will be

[–]NamelessPurity 0 points1 point ago

I've been wondering... Are we hipsters for using the term hipster for certain people so much?

[–]the_birdie_finger 0 points1 point ago

Switch that iPhone with a flip phone.

[–]GreenSkreen 0 points1 point ago

a homeless? you mean a hobo

[–]Bwtw77 0 points1 point ago

Which one's which?

[–]ShipWreckLover 0 points1 point ago

I never understood this: Hipsters like things that aren't popular but the iPhone is the most popular phone out there!

[–]Blackashgallow 0 points1 point ago

maybe its an optical illusion but he actully looks happier with the phone in his hand even though its the same pic

[–]Cyberslasher 0 points1 point ago

in case anyone cares, the first photo is legit, the second one has the iphone shopped in. You can tell by the lower right corner, where it has GROWN THROUGH HIS FUCKING HAND. 2/10 shop, did not believe.

[–]MrAgentOrange -2 points-1 points ago

I think that there are actually hipsters who choose to be homeless around my campus.

[–]ducksauks 0 points1 point ago

I have the appearance of being homeless/hipster and I have been homeless for brief periods of time, but I usually have a place to crash. It sucks when you don't though.

[–]a2intl 0 points1 point ago

I was homeless before it was cool.

[–]MrAgentOrange 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure it really does suck. These guys walk around with all sorts of gear though. Like completely full hiking packs and stuff. I dunno, they're a weird group.

[–]Smilfink 1 point2 points ago

i'd say this is pretty accurate

[–]Thatguyispimp 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure you could swap out hipster for Male Fashion Advice Subscriber as well

[–]milliondollarmenu 0 points1 point ago

You'd literally never see mfa embracing something like this from Schneider

[–]a2intl 0 points1 point ago

My god, he's wearing a rug!

[–]milliondollarmenu 0 points1 point ago

It looks impractical but very nice in my opinion.

[–]onlynameicouldfind -1 points0 points ago

Are you a Northerner?

[–]Nooneway 1 point2 points ago

Also- teeth.

[–]Nodebunny 2 points3 points ago
