Yeah, it has been the meme in Russian part of intenets for a 3-4 years now, I think, to the point where the phrase "Why is Putin a crab?" (in Russian, ofc) was the #1 searched on Russian Google. It originates from some speech to Cabinet of Ministers (I believe???) by Putin, where he was was claiming that he was working as hard as slave on a galley (in Russian slave is "rab"). Some news website quoted him on that, but they made a typo, which made it sound, as if Putin was a crab on a galley, and it snowballed from there

This is Putin - crab, a popular meme in Russia.

It has appeared after a misquote of Putin in major media, where he actually said

"я пахал, как раб" ("I've been working as a slave")

but after a typo he was quoted as saying

The back story is this: Crab is Putin's nickname in Russia because of a misprint in a paper:

Мне не стыдно перед гражданами, которые голосовали за меня дважды, избирая на пост президента Российской Федерации. Все эти восемь лет я пахал, ка краб на галерах, с утра до ночи, и делал это с полной отдачей сил.

The word krab (crab) and rab (slave) are close enough for a misprint. So, instead of working like a slave, he was working like a crab. It's a Russian meme.
