Found here.

RCMP member on his way to the office was flagged down by a motorist on the side of the highway in Baddeck. The man had hit an eagle that flew in front of his car while it was trying to pick a dead partridge off the road. DNR was immediately notified but the members stood roadside protecting the eagle. The Eagle became agitated by the torrential rains and used his wings to drag himself far in the woods on the side of a large ravine. Fearing the eagle may climb over the side the member took the eagle in his hands to protect it until DNR Wildlife Technician arrived.

[–]C4N4DI4N 89 points90 points ago

Crazy! That bird looks like it could seriously fuck you up

[–]Badwoolf 34 points35 points ago

Yeah, even though it's seriously injured and looks almost dead, I would still be afraid to hold it like that.

[–]famikon 43 points44 points ago

birds are very clever and it could probably recognize that he was helping it.

My cat brought a bird into my bedroom in it's mouth, I kicked the cat out and then spent 10 minutes trying to shoe the bird out the window.

When I decided to go outside and whistled at it, it flew outside and landed on a tree branch near me and just chilled, like it was my avian-bro. I was like GET OUT OF HERE BIRD MY CAT WILL FUCK YOU UP

[–]bigcitycrows 22 points23 points ago

Speaking as someone who has held eagles for normal and medical procedure, I have to say whether injured or not and whether you're trying to help them or not makes no difference in the likelihood of them trying to bite your nipples off.

An injured, struggling eagle can fuck you up in the worst ways imaginable simply by accident in attempt to escape.

and the guy pictured was cruisin' for a bruisin' the way he's holding it.

Also, not to be a downer but the bird in your story was most likely in extreme shock.

[–]famikon 9 points10 points ago

Aw, I felt like he was my bro :(

[–]darkstar3333 2 points3 points ago

The eagle likely can exert enough pressure in its jaw to bite clean through your finger. Google says ~400PSI about as strong as a Wolf.

I had a cockatoo once, he lost his footing and to stabilize himself he used my hand and his beak. Missed the bone but went right through skin with little to no effort.

[–]KameraadLenin 2 points3 points ago

This person understands what is good.

[–]eMan117 1 point2 points ago

not that there is any force in this world strong enough to make me pick up an actual eagle, but for the sake of knowledge, how should one pick up an injured Eagle in a way that lets them keep all their fingers and not get raked by their claws?

[–]bigcitycrows 5 points6 points ago

Coming from the back and firmly grasping the eagle's legs just above the feet in one hand, with something in between both ankles to prevent it from getting them crushed together, and the other hand around the front of the neck. In this way the wings are folded under the holder's elbows. This is complicated by the strength of the eagles, you want to keep the wings in because they can literally "punch" you with the tops of them just like a person could, and they're kick with their legs while opening and closing their feet, and sometimes they'll realize they might be able to turn around and get some flesh but it's better to be bitten by an eagle than to let it get one talon in you.

Inexperienced persons or those not under the direct order of someone who has plenty of eagle experience shouldn't try this, and should instead attempt to herd the eagle into a large box with a broom or should try, if it's not too hot out, to use a thick towel around the entire eagle. A towel is also useful for giving their feet something to grab, because they can accidentally puncture themselves with their talons.

[–]NotYouHaha 20 points21 points ago

Does that little anecdote not demonstrate that birds don't exactly understand the intentions of humans? You wanted it to leave but it came to you. Anyways, why did you whistle at it anyways? If they're as clever as you say it would've just flown away.

Besides, this is a bald eagle, whose instinct is more violent than what I'd imagine the bird in your situation was.

[–]generalblake 7 points8 points ago

You don't get it, His cat is a mountain lion and the bird is a bald eagle.

[–]famikon 4 points5 points ago

it demonstrated that the bird exactly understood my intention. to save it, not harm it.

it did not understand the situation of being in a house and the only exit is a window that barely opens and wasn't letting any light in.

It also did not understand that my cat still wants to fuck it up

[–]I_RAPE_PEOPLE_II 11 points12 points ago

Birds also don't speak English.

[–]Ricekrisper 3 points4 points ago

It took a rapist to tell him for him to understand that.

[–]KameraadLenin -3 points-2 points ago

That demonstrated nothing apart from a cool experience you had with some bird your cat almost killed. To be so arrogant as to infer that all birds will act the same as your anecdote, without even taking into account the difference in temperament a raptor would have over whatever seed eating bird your cat almost killed, nor stating that your one story could never accurately reflect upon the whole of ave kind. it's like a cancer on scientific thought and you are the tumor.

[–]famikon 3 points4 points ago

want to smoke a bowl bro?

you should smoke a bowl.

[–]KameraadLenin -2 points-1 points ago

No I smoke too much weed already.

You're still wrong, though.

[–]gizmogadgets 6 points7 points ago

I read that last part in Aziz Ansari's voice

[–]StupidButSerious 5 points6 points ago

I kicked the cat

You're living the dream.

[–]mrglubglub 2 points3 points ago

A lot of people don't know this, but according to cat psychology your cat was actually bringing you a gift thinking it was feeding you. Don't punish him for it.

[–]Bravo-31 1 point2 points ago

I reward my cat for dead animals it brings to me. No birds yet just mice and snakes.

[–]famikon 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I try to keep my temperament somewhere in between "you stupid cat now there's feathers and bird shit all over my bed" and "thank you SOOO MUCH!! "

[–]ikidd 1 point2 points ago

I think those gloves might delay him losing a hand for roughly 1/10000ths of a second. Look at that goddamn hook on the beak.

[–]iwasntgoingtocomment 10 points11 points ago

I agree! I sneaked up on an eagle once as he was looking over a bay of sealions. I wanted to take a great picture. As he swiveled his head around to stare at me, I realized he was actually enormous. Sorry! I'm just leaving!

[–]thats-a-repost 3 points4 points ago

I was hunting a couple days ago on my day off work and had a nice spruce grouse in my sights, however I was on an ATV and had to take my gun out, load it and get off the ATV for it to be a legal kill in that time a bald eagle swooped down and grabbed the spruce grouse scared the shit out of me was one of the craziest attacks I've seen first hand, I know they are known for snatching small pets (cats, dogs) in some areas as well. I am investing in a helmet cam as soon as I have the extra coin wish I would have had that on film.

[–]JTMTL 2 points3 points ago

My Mother rescued a Raptor on a busy street a few months back. Only after was she informed that it could have broken her finger if it had bit her. We then went out and visited the rescue center and I was blown away at how many birds are rescued. They gave us a tour and left us with such a good feeling. We all donated money happily, for the amazing work they were doing. I live in montreal and attached is rescue center information.

[–]jjremy 1 point2 points ago

I just now realised how enormous these birds actually are.

I would not want to fuck with that.

[–]juliusseizure 7 points8 points ago

Title should read "In a symbolic gesture, RCMP officer single-handedly rescues the USA"

[–]neuter 2 points3 points ago

So how is it doing now? What injuries did it originally sustain?

[–]DanWallace 2 points3 points ago

That dude looks awfully dry for having just been in torrential rains.

[–]nahmean 1 point2 points ago

That doesn't make sense considering there are two cars... if one offer was flagged down, where'd the other car from? Did he seriously call for backup?

[–]Cheese_Bits 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, how else would he be able to hold back traffic and take care of the eagle? He's an RCMP officer, not robocop, he can't do everything on his own and there's plenty of regulations they need to follow.

[–]didaskaleinophobic 52 points53 points ago

Even at its worst, its such a majestic animal.

[–]Zorbane 21 points22 points ago

It looks hella badass

[–]trolloc1 2 points3 points ago

Too bad its calls aren't as badass as a hawks or it'd be the ultimate motherfucker.

[–]Everyone_Loves_Ramen 0 points1 point ago

In your own words, please describe the difference between a hawk call and an eagle call

[–]trolloc1 2 points3 points ago

Hawk calls are badass. Bald Eagle calls sound like a bunch of people wearing sneakers on a court.

[–]nourez 0 points1 point ago

Actually a pretty apt description. What most people thing is an eagle call is actually a hawk call.

Here is a video for reference.

here is what you tried to link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlq2kcYQcLc

and the badass hawk call for comparison:

[–]nourez 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the fix. I hate linking via my iPad.

[–]Canoo 4 points5 points ago

so prehistoric looking

[–]StoryGopher 19 points20 points ago

I would shit my pants if I had to approach a wounded bald eagle. Those things are intense animals.

[–]vileSpanishiwa 2 points3 points ago

i saw one live during a bird show at grouse mountain, holy FUCK their wingspan is insane.

[–]Dorkside 15 points16 points ago

It's always refreshing when something positive about the police is posted on Reddit.

[–]Gary_the_Goatfucker 12 points13 points ago

Hug da police!

[–]DinoBenn 1 point2 points ago

[–]Laffs 14 points15 points ago

Fuck, those birds are awesome.

[–]anhydrouscake 38 points39 points ago

All I'm thinking is that beak could fuck you up

[–]bigcitycrows 4 points5 points ago

It's the feet he wants to look out for, you're supposed to hold them i such a way that you're "hugging" the body with the wings in and grasping the "ankles" firmly.

Looking at this picture, I'm like "pull up, you fool! In the talons go, straight through the femoral artery..."

[–]Reformed_Asshole 6 points7 points ago

That is why an American officer of the law, known for their intelligence, would have just shot the bird and arrested the car.

[–]VasiliiZaytsev 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, someone should really tell that officer to beak careful.

[–]SirTonberry 6 points7 points ago

There's no talon how it'll react.

[–]webbman1001 68 points69 points ago

Symbolic of the current economic state?

[–]chingyduster 34 points35 points ago

If it was a Chinese man holding the eagle maybe.

[–]trolloc1 3 points4 points ago

A Chinese Canadian supporting America?

[–]WonderBread10 9 points10 points ago

It's like a vision into the future...

[–]grammar_soviet 6 points7 points ago

Canada confirmed for future economic savior!

[–]KiaAngel 17 points18 points ago

Gets hit by car

Still looks majestic as fuck

[–]internet_butt_raper 7 points8 points ago

lol that guy arrested me last weekend

[–]Rayofpain 7 points8 points ago

RIGHT.

[–]lestercg 7 points8 points ago

If I may... Direct everyone to the claws and beak on that beautiful creature. Scared just looking at those. Amazing animals.

[–]ZillahGashly 4 points5 points ago

Those leather gloves look exceptionally thin after looking at that eagle's beak. I'd want a pair of those shark gloves on, myself.

[–]kiosis 11 points12 points ago

I knew instantly this must've been in Cape Breton. I've been here a little over a month and I've seen 6-7 bald eagles already.

[–]RDuncan66 7 points8 points ago

My hometown, you can see 20-30 a Day. Moved to the city as a child.. and during a class field trip we saw one perched on top of a tree.. and the attention it got confused me, everyone was so excited.. haha, after seeing them in numbers all my life.it wasn't until then I realized there weren't any in the city.

[–]nhlfan 2 points3 points ago

What the hell? Where did you grow up?

[–]-ProbablySomeone 7 points8 points ago

Here. it's a small fishing town.. very remote. Natural surrounding. it's beautiful there.

[–]sjs 5 points6 points ago

How do you know where RDuncan66 grew up? Do you know each other?

[–]-ProbablySomeone 4 points5 points ago

Same person. haha, computer is linked to more than one account. Every once in a while my laptop will just decide it wants to switch. it's fairly new, still working out all of the settings.

[–]sjs 2 points3 points ago

Bella Bella sounds pretty cool. Can you drive or get a ferry out, or only fly?

[–]-ProbablySomeone 2 points3 points ago

there is weekly ferry during the summer peak hours from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert.. it stops by Bella Bella. so, if you can get to either you can get to Bella Bella. I think it's every 2 weeks during the off season, not too sure.

[–]Badwoolf 5 points6 points ago

I've only seen one bald eagle, it was sitting on the top of a lodgepole pine in Alberta when I was driving down the highway, and I was so excited that I almost swerved off the road. Goddamn things are fuckin' majestic, man.

[–]whitbyrudie 3 points4 points ago

West coast has a huge bald eagle population as well.

[–]Maelstrom78[!] 0 points1 point ago

Especially around the Bras D'or Lakes area of Cape Breton there are huge numbers of them. In the 1980's numerous breeding pairs were taken to the North Eastern US to help re-establish populations. Which appears to have been a success. It's not uncommon when I go back to visit the folks that I see several on the cliffs along the water at any given time. They are so big they actually look like dogs from a distance.

[–]GhostRooster 3 points4 points ago

It looks so...vivid. I don't know how to describe it but it's amazing

[–]alcabazar 9 points10 points ago

Why is he helping the enemy? He should have brought in a Canada Goose to finish the job.

[–]canad93 2 points3 points ago

Seriously. Stupid protected species that knows it's a protected species.

[–]TJerky 3 points4 points ago

There is a lake (really just a big pond) in my town that has no aquatic life left in it, entirely because of goose poop. No frogs, no fish, nothing, all because of people feeding the geese so much they decided to stop migrating in the winter. Now the water's this murky brown colour and the grass is covered in the stuff.

[–]Gary_the_Goatfucker 2 points3 points ago

everywhere literal fields of goose clart

[–]Caesar1313 4 points5 points ago

And attack wandering children.

[–]BaconCanada 2 points3 points ago

Good on the officer but the look on it's face....the eagle looks like it gives zero fucks. Fairly intense.

[–]phillyphan09 2 points3 points ago

Never realized how huge their talons are. What a bad ass creature.

[–]Adidos 1 point2 points ago

You can't just limit this to /r/canada! ;)

[–]HillPeople89 2 points3 points ago

The Mounties. Purveyors of badass-ery since 1920.

[–]threat42 2 points3 points ago

YOU'RE WELCOME, AMERICA.

[–]InGordWeTrust 4 points5 points ago

This is what I call rescuing an animal. This is an actual rescue, rather than an adoption. Seems silly people would say otherwise.

[–]BaconCanada 13 points14 points ago

Well to be fair they are usually giving them food, shelter and paid vet bills for their lives as opposed to them being euthanized. If they want to call it rescuing that's fine by me.

[–]InGordWeTrust -2 points-1 points ago

I disagree. I hold it to the same standard as adopting a child.

[–]Capt_Underpants 5 points6 points ago

Except you don't usually euthanize children.

[–]gimpwiz 12 points13 points ago

No-kill orphanages are getting pretty expensive these days.

[–]DanWallace 11 points12 points ago

It's not a competition, dude.

[–]Crossfox17 2 points3 points ago

That b'longs to 'murica. Get yer hands off that majestic bird you dirty Canadian!

[–]Crossfox17 6 points7 points ago

Its a joke dude.

[–]eldorann 3 points4 points ago

To my understanding, the RCMPs are one of the last bastions of a mostly uncorrupted police force.

Also, Canada has great healthcare. If I can't get to Europe in a few years, I'll visit y'all hosers.

The last is a playful reference to "Strange Brew" with those two Canuck drunkards.

[–]nahmean 2 points3 points ago

RCMP are not at all "uncorrupted".

[–]zookeeperv 2 points3 points ago

They may be a lot of things, but squeaky clean is not one of them.

[–]Deimosberos 1 point2 points ago

I once saw about ten bald eagles hunting fish off lake Helen near Thunder bay. I didn't know Canada had a significant population of eagles until travelling up north. Beautiful birds for a beautiful country.

[–]MRTRIPS33 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yeah

[–]Canadian_Tardis 1 point2 points ago

Wow. You know eagles are epic when on a bad day they can still kill a human.

[–]Yage2006 0 points1 point ago

Good thing they still have a good food supply then.

[–]nbarnacle -1 points0 points ago

I love the gay pride flag on the cop cars there.

[–]Bravo-31 1 point2 points ago

These are majestic birds. I was in my duck blind last year watching a cormorant sit on a rock. Out of nowhere a bald eagle comes and snatches him. It was the most unbelievable sight I've experienced. It made me feel like a very inferior hunter.

[–]pangalactic42 1 point2 points ago

Bald Eagles are smart and dangerous, even when they are that weak. Brave man for picking it up like that!

I was going to ask what Wildife Rehab the eagle was sent to but then I saw it was in Nova Scotia, therefore it will definitely be going to Hope for Wildlife.

[–]AlabasterSlim -1 points0 points ago

Impossible. Everyone knows these birds are only in 'murica

[–]MikeTheSpike 1 point2 points ago

The eagle's going "ahh fuck, this is going on the Internet, isn't it?"

[–]Pole-Cratt 0 points1 point ago

Is the car ok?

[–]__derpy 0 points1 point ago

Even though the eagle is hurt it still looks badass.

[–]mandano 0 points1 point ago

Watch out for your eyes!

[–]NicholasHorror 0 points1 point ago

Ridiculously photogenic bald eagle.

[–]gypsystomper 1 point2 points ago

fuck yeah, 'MURICA!!

[–]Atheist101 1 point2 points ago

OYE, CANADA, QUIT HITTING OUR BIRDS!

-USA

[–]eric1589 0 points1 point ago

Those gloves can't save those fingers from that beak at all.

[–]Toolus 2 points3 points ago

this needs to be reposted on r/muricah

[–]Flo_The_Nerd -1 points0 points ago

Faith in humanity is restored.

[–]Wozzle90 -1 points0 points ago

A true American hero. He should get a congressional medal.

[–]mursematt -2 points-1 points ago

This is what you call "Canadian bad ass"

[–]overshortly -2 points-1 points ago

Impossible. He's not on a horse, he's not wearing a red blazer and he doesn't have a mountie hat on. More like Regular Canadian Lame-ass Police...

Also, thank you for your service.

[–]StevenDanger -5 points-4 points ago

your welcome Americans.

[–]Maelstrom78[!] 0 points1 point ago

They can actually thank Cape Breton for bringing the bald eagle back in the 1980's as well.
