They're probably trying to cope. You'd be shocked how many people have gone through such horrible situations. Our culture prefers to pretend it never happens and hide the symptoms rather than concern itself with the cure for the actual cause. Just like the family in the comic who pretends it isn't happening, which allows it to continue and get worse, rather than do something about it. The person who wrote this probably intended it to shock people into realizing what actually does happen and why. The very reason we are uncomfortable to read the comic or discuss it is why things don't get better.
