ORANGE HELMETED SPORTSMEN OF AMERICA is the funniest thing ever

[–]Manchester Cityitalia06823834 50 points51 points ago

The Blue Lions will crush your ORANGE HELMETED SPORTSMEN OF AMERICA! Unfortunately I don't think the Blue Lions can hold up against the Color Palets.

[–]ArsenalPackers91 16 points17 points ago

Actually that's probably one of 3-4 teams they CAN beat

[–]Tottenham HotspurHDnightlife 0 points1 point ago

Wait, is that the ORANGE or the Palettes they can beat? Or both?

[–]Chelseadb0255 122 points123 points ago

FC ORANGE HELMET

[–]Hapoel Katamon Jerusalemoreng 6 points7 points ago

Shortbusing it all the way to La Superbowl.

[–]Evertonfireinthesky7 17 points18 points ago

A little part of me wants to change to Browns flair just because of that.

[–]Evertonmcdvda 4 points5 points ago

I can't not hear that in John Oliver's voice.

[–]Chelsealeporello 109 points110 points ago

The thread in question.

EDIT: Tons more in here, particularly "I'm a bison with a severe eye wound."

[–]Tottenham HotspurFishtacoburrito 51 points52 points ago

As an r/nfl guy, that thread is even more entertaining now that flair has been restored. Sidenote; the April Fool's prank is what brought me to r/soccer.

Edit: grammar

[–]Borussia Dortmundthejerg 10 points11 points ago

Yep. Same here and Borussia dortmund turns out to be a cool team to support so it was a double win for me.

[–]West Ham Unitedgreg19735 4 points5 points ago

dortmund are probably the coolest team in world football at the moment. They're super young, talented and have won the league. They're only getting better. admittedly they didn't start the league that well.

[–]Real Madridcairdeas 18 points19 points ago

Has to be screenshots for me. The crests all reverted to their originals.

[–]Chelsea999realthings 8 points9 points ago

Great thread, shame the crest is gone.

[–]MexicoHurricaneHugo 5 points6 points ago

Or laser buffalo!

[–]Borussia Dortmundandersonb47 229 points230 points ago

This is especially hilarious as an American, who recognizes the crests/logos from both sports.

[–]Rcp_43b 38 points39 points ago

that truly made it more funny.

[–]Sporting CristalxUnderoath 26 points27 points ago

As someone from South America, who follows both EU soccer and NA football, this shit had me tripping balls.

[–]ArsenalMassacrMan 9 points10 points ago

Same here, lol!

[–]Houston DynamoZosoer 309 points310 points ago

This really was a hilarious day. Nice work mods.

[–]Barcelonareese_ridley 63 points64 points ago

I wasn't on reddit back then, what happened?

[–]Chicago Firespisska 176 points177 points ago

/r/nfl and /r/soccer swapped css templates and flair for the day, assigning flair more or less randomly.

One of the more amusing parts for me was seeing the team names people came up with here for NFL teams. The Orange Helmeted Sportsmen of America and the T-Comets were particular highlights.

[–]Evertonfireinthesky7 56 points57 points ago

I totally lost it at "Flaming Thumbtacks". Now that I live in Nashville and see that logo EVERYWHERE, I'll never be able to get that out of my head.

[–]ArsenalsomeBrad 9 points10 points ago

I believe Gregg Easterbrook came up with that over a decade ago when he wrote at Slate.

[–]Club AmericaFiatJustitia956 7 points8 points ago

formerly known as the Houston oilers ;0

[–]Manchester CityFortehlulz33 2 points3 points ago

EDIT: IT'S ON FIRE

[–]Tottenham HotspurOld-Hickory 48 points49 points ago

Flair was assigned randomly in /r/nfl based on how many people on /r/soccer had a certain flair (cause only 32 NFL teams and way more soccer ones than that).

Flair on /r/soccer was by "random" team. EG all Spurs (and a few other teams) were Steelers

[–]ArsenalMasstadon 6 points7 points ago

i was lucky enough to also get arsenal

[–]Manchester Unitedtraviemccoy 9 points10 points ago

Arsenal was lucky enough to get you.

[–]Naly_D 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure the flair on here worked as you said. I'm a Saints fan and I had Minnesota Stars FC flair, while other Saints fans had Man U, Arsenal and a few others.

[–]Seattle SoundersSonOfMechaMummy 10 points11 points ago

Thankfully they at least let the Seattle crests correspond so I had Seahawks flair for the day. I mean, I almost never watch Seahawks games but it's the principle of the thing.

[–]Seattle Soundersderekmyoung 25 points26 points ago

Loved the guy clearly from Seattle that ended up with Steelers. That would have killed my soul a little.

[–]Chelseaeagle0100 4 points5 points ago

As an actual Titans fan, I think I'm gonna start calling my own team the T-Comets

[–]Liverpoolshackleford_rusty 3 points4 points ago

They had to be fucking with me. In r/nfl they gave me Man United, and over here I got the Patriots. (I'm a Steelers fan.)

[–]Tractor Sazishamusmclovin 8 points9 points ago

/r/soccer and /r/nfl traded style sheets.

[–]Royal AntwerpRed_Dog1880 2 points3 points ago

Agreed, I think I spent a few hours just going through the threads, not commenting but laughing at some people's posts.

[–]Tottenham Hotspursmokey815 145 points146 points ago

I enjoy everything about this, and am disappointed I missed it.

[–]Readingyourtehdiction 20 points21 points ago

I was gutted to miss it, I was laid up with 'flu for the week that day was in.

[–]United Statesgeofish 74 points75 points ago

Isn't that the perfect opportunity to spend all day on reddit?

[–]Readingyourtehdiction 61 points62 points ago

I tried, the screen brightness was piercing my brain with the intensity of a hot needle.

[–]turboface 48 points49 points ago

Maybe in 2013 we'll be able to adjust that.

[–]FC Buffalocrackshot91 11 points12 points ago

Maybe this could help you if you find yourself in that position again. At least I hope it does. :)

Actually, I hope you never need it! :D

[–]Zacharius 6 points7 points ago

As someone that suffers frequent migraines but still has to work in IT, I very much approve of Flux.

[–]hockal00gy 2 points3 points ago

Wow, this is really gonna help when I'm trying to listen to music late at night.

[–]Zacharius 2 points3 points ago

Only downfall is that by default, Flux automatically detect your geo-location and set your timezone accordingly, so if you tend to do a lot of work later in the evenings, yeah...

[–]Hajduk Splitrokic 3 points4 points ago

Honestly, even late at night, flux is great for typing and such. If you do some color sensitive work it's a whole other story.

[–]Columbus Crewcameron432 3 points4 points ago

Using computers without flux since I started using it feels really weird. I love Flux.

[–]HAL SCIron_Maiden_666 4 points5 points ago

F.lux?

[–]Manchester CityLimpan 70 points71 points ago

Damn the Plymouth one had me snorting.

[–]Bristol Cityg0_west 17 points18 points ago

That was the only one I understood. The peoples responses to their own posts had me cracking up though.

[–]Plymouth ArgyleJimStyling 17 points18 points ago

It's 4am and I nearly woke up my house wheezing with laughter. Never made the connection between knitwear and the titans of the beautiful game that are Plymouth Argyle.

[–]Birmingham CityNoizeUK 5 points6 points ago

Green army!

[–]Nottingham ForestPerihelion_ 8 points9 points ago

Haha yeah. That where I cracked.

[–]Exeter CityGuardianista 3 points4 points ago

I might have to mention it next time I see a janner...

[–]AC Milanfua_neng 31 points32 points ago

I can't believe that "OUR QUARTERMASTER HAS TOUCHDOWN ABILITY" didn't get picked up as a best-of.

I've thought about it and have decided that Reddit is the only place in the entire universe where lols like these could occur.

[–]Liverpoolcupcakes_23 20 points21 points ago

Vikings- forever known only as the team on How I Met Your Mother.

[–]ArsenalKonigSteve 34 points35 points ago

Background information that makes one bit hilarious.

The Seahawks lost their only super bowl appearance ever to the Pittsburgh Steelers (color palettes), and many blame the horrible officiating for the loss (many non Seahawks as well).

[–]Liverpoolackbarofsoap 8 points9 points ago

Well they got one back due to horrible officiating this year (not a superbowl victory, but a victory nontheless)

[–]ArsenalPackers91 6 points7 points ago

sob

[–]Liverpoolackbarofsoap 0 points1 point ago

I feel your pain, man.

That was a rough weekend for me, Liverpool vs. Man United and that wasn't filled with the greatest officiating either.

[–]ArsenalPackers91 0 points1 point ago

You could feel his soul shattering as he saw his flair

[–]Pittsburgh RiverhoundsVapour428 17 points18 points ago

As an actual Steelers fan, I laughed a good bit from the begrudged Steelers "fan"

[–]Tottenham Hotspurnssmuckers 7 points8 points ago

Aye I've been feasting on Seattle tears for the better part of a decade now.

[–]Tottenham HotspurTheyDidItFirst 7 points8 points ago

still hurts

[–]Blackburn RoversGroundCtrl27 16 points17 points ago

That happened to be my first day on reddit (decided to join after hearing about /r/soccer). I was very confused.

"I AM A LIFELONG SUPPORTER OF THE ORANGE-HELMETED SPORTSMAN OF AMERICA. THE INTERNET TELLS ME THAT THEY ARE INCOMPETENT BUT I DISAGREE. IT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPORTSMEN THAT ARE INCOMPETENT. HOW AM I DOING." - ChristianSur

I'm sorry but that shit had me busting. LOL!

[–]Dundeethe_codfather 61 points62 points ago

I find it weird how Europe and America share so much culturally in terms of entertainment yet we obsess over completely different sports.

[–]Real Madridillstealurcandy 10 points11 points ago

Well, if you go back far enough, both footballs (and rugby) originated from the same sport.

[–]FC Edmontonkingminers 23 points24 points ago

Funny story, the Brits hate the use of the word soccer, but they're the ones who invented it.

[–]JB_UK 39 points40 points ago

Just the same way we feel about America!

I'm not even sure whether most British people realize this, but the reason it sounds awkward to us is because the word was formed from a very particular mechanism of upper-class slang, most of the words arising from which sound hopelessly contrived to the rest of the population. Other examples:

  • Jeremy - Jezza

  • Rugby - Rugger.

  • Champagne - Champers

  • (Stark) naked - Starkers

  • Crazy - Crackers

To combine this with an American accent (some of which have an uncanny valley like similarity to an upper-class English accent, with the same characteristic drawl) just adds to the nails on the chalkboard sensation. It is like scratching at an Englishman's soul.

[–]Southamptonmr-dogshit 14 points15 points ago

It should be pointed out that football is/was the working man's game.

The term 'soccer' was coined by members of the wealthier upper classes... nobody ever used the term but them - EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT THEIR FUCKING GAME!!!!!

WHY DON'T THEY CALL GOLF "GOLFUCK"??????

...ahem, lost my composure there, apologies.
*mumbles something about posh cunts*

[–]New England RevolutionMcoov 6 points7 points ago

Not the British, but the Oxfords.

[–]Oxford Unitedcalw 2 points3 points ago

People from Oxford are called Oxonians.

[–]slyfox1908 28 points29 points ago

I think the biggest difference is that Americans have integrated league and cup play, while Europeans leave them as distinct competitions. I think Europeans would be mystified by the idea that the top team in an American league can be knocked out in the first round of the "playoffs" and would consider their season a failure.

[–]Barcelonajamsm 35 points36 points ago

Or what about the fact that many soccer leagues demote and promote teams from their leagues? Imagine the outrage if the NFL had a B league and the Raiders got knocked down? LA Riots v2.0 Oakland edition.

[–]Dundeethe_codfather 15 points16 points ago

If there's no promotion how do small teams get into the NFL?

[–]Barcelonajamsm 12 points13 points ago

They usually don't. Most of the time, "new" teams are just relocated teams with new names. The NFL is pretty static, I don't know of any team that is actually brand new. However, I'm not that much of an expert, I just pay attention to when the San Diego Chargers play.

[–]Dundeethe_codfather 12 points13 points ago

So it's not like here in the UK where every town has at least one team that aspires to one day be national champions?

[–]Barcelonajamsm 15 points16 points ago

Not at all, some cities have even lost their teams when richer cities have lured away their teams, usually with a better stadium.

My city's team, the Chargers have threatened to leave us for LA because they don't like their stadium. Recently, they wanted San Diego to invest about 600 million for a new stadium, but thankfully voters shot down that stupid idea. A football stadium would have cost the city twice that amount.

Before teams wouldn't even change their names, and you would have things like the LA Lakers that were originally from Minnesota (land of a thousand lakes).

I just looked it up, and it looks like there have been new teams added to professional leagues, known as expansion teams, and the last one added to the NFL was the Houston Texans after their original team, the Oilers, moved to Nashville and became the Titans. This was in 2002.

What to know another fucked up thing about the NFL? If home games do not sell well, the game is blacked out for the local area. Basically the teams punish their fans for not buying tickets to their games, because fuck you, that's why.

[–]sandrakarr 5 points6 points ago

I'd always wondered how they ended up with 'Lakers'. TIL.
edit: Blackouts aren't limited to NFL. I remember my dad and/or sister being miffed because NASCAR was blacked out locally. It's been several years though.

[–]EvertonRobertej92 2 points3 points ago

what happens with the old stadiums when a team moves out to another city? Just knocked down and redeveloped?

[–]Houston Dynamodreamingawake09 20 points21 points ago

That would make me go back to NFL full-time honestly. Would love to see the Cowgirls get relegated lol.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurdrwormtmbg 9 points10 points ago

My pants would never recover from such an occurrence.

[–]Club AmericaFiatJustitia956 3 points4 points ago

if by Cowboys you mean the Cardilulz, the Browns, the Lions, the Raiders, the Jags, the Bills, and even the Texans up until last year, then sure.

OH, WHAT NOW?

[–]Newcastle Unitedcapnza 7 points8 points ago

What a second, you mean teams don't get relegated in NFL ?

[–]Barcelonajamsm 7 points8 points ago

Nope. NFL is the only professional league, while college football is like the minors. For the longest time, baseball was the only sport with any kind of lower division, but MLS is starting academies.

[–]Newcastle Unitedcapnza 6 points7 points ago

Well you can have multiple professional leagues. In England for football we have Premier League -> Championship -> League One -> League Two which are all professional leagues.

Is the existence of a single professional NFL league limited by the number of teams or is it by design?

That is really interesting.

[–]Barcelonajamsm 4 points5 points ago

Current NFL came about when the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) merged into one. I don't think there could realistically be more teams because that would mean more games played, and players can barely stay healthy with the current schedule. There's either 12 or 13 games played during the regular season; all I ever hear on the sports news is what player is out for what games.

[–]Djurgårdens IFstenskott 5 points6 points ago

Actually it's 16 games per season, and the amount of teams doesn't matter, since it can be many years in between meetings of specific teams. The reason the nfl probably won't add more teams is they're at 32 teams now, which works nicely as eight divisions of four teams each, with 12 teams total making the playoffs.

[–]Newcastle Unitedcapnza 3 points4 points ago

For comparison, football teams in the Premier League play 38 league games in a regular season. If you have a good cup run and play in the Champion's League, you could be looking at 50 games a season.

Of course, I have no idea what the relative stress on the body of a game of NFL vs football is so comparison is of course difficult.

I suppose having grown up with this national division stuff where teams get relegated and promoted, I can easily see how NFL could be a nationwide division of 20 teams, with another division of 20 teams below, in which all teams play each other home and away.

Thanks for the replies. Really interesting, like I said

[–]Italyrools 7 points8 points ago

Your average AF (American Footballer) will run less distance in a game than a RF (real footballer) will. The toll on the AF is much greater because they are always running at full tilt, and they are always colliding with each other; usually pretty fast.

They're very different sports in terms of fitness requirements.

[–]Rcp_43b 5 points6 points ago

It will never happen, but I think that would be awesome to see for a few seasons. see how it plays out.

[–]Club AmericaFiatJustitia956 8 points9 points ago

In the Mexican league, you can be top of the league going into the playoffs and knocked out in the first round, too

[–]Saint-Peer 3 points4 points ago

I've only met a few Europeans (British) in life, but I've probably talked to many dozens on the internet. And it'll probably stay that way :(

[–]Newcastle UnitedAarcn 7 points8 points ago

Save up and travel a bit bud!

[–]Saint-Peer 7 points8 points ago

Once if I can assure myself a job before I graduate, I'm going to spend at least a month and a half traveling parts of Europe by this summer!

[–]Newcastle UnitedAarcn 4 points5 points ago

Good luck!

[–]RUN_BKK 16 points17 points ago

But no one likes Philadelphia, which is convenient because Philadelphia doesn't like anyone else.

As a Philadelphian I can confirm this.

[–]RelevantComics 4 points5 points ago

Philadelphia means brotherly love giggle

[–]RUN_BKK 6 points7 points ago

Ryan Howard was asked about the fans in Philly on a talk show and he actually gave a really eloquent answer. He likened their harshness to that of an older brother. One who beats you up and picks on you, but at the end of the day loves you like family. Brotherly love...

[–]Awesomeade 14 points15 points ago

I thought that the football fans were much funnier than the football fans.

[–]Argentinakimboslice11 12 points13 points ago

I cracked up on the.. oh god I'm the browns one.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurspurscanada 27 points28 points ago

The Tottenham Steelers won, and I got the number one post on /r/nfl because of posting a /r/soccer screenshot, it was a good day

[–]Tottenham Hotspurifthereis 11 points12 points ago

As a Ravens fan, this made me sad.

[–]Houston DynamoSleepy_One 29 points30 points ago

Good. I hope you feel bad for stealing the ORANGE HELMETED SPORTSMEN OF AMERICA'S team.

[–]Tottenham HotspurGalil 3 points4 points ago

I'm a Ravens fan too and Tottenham Steelers is just so wrong.

[–]Arsenallongboarderbandits 3 points4 points ago

Swansea City Raiders sounds pretty bad ass though

[–]Liverpoolackbarofsoap 11 points12 points ago

That would've been incredible, whoever had the Green Bay Packer crest and managed to still shit-talk the Cowboys is my hero!

[–]Manchester Unitedchris1ian 42 points43 points ago

This should become a sporadic occurrence.

[–]Manchester Unitedchris1ian 27 points28 points ago

I also thought it'd be funny if the badge changed to that of your rivals, but then I realised it'd happen to me as well. Damn.

[–]Athomeacct 4 points5 points ago

/r/MLS did this on this same April Fools. It was freaking hilarious.

[–]Arsenalcharitablemisanthrop 5 points6 points ago

Very much this, but not too frequently otherwise it won't be any good.

[–]Philadelphia Unionkanjiwatanabe 9 points10 points ago

That was beautiful. I lost it at flaming thumbtacks.

[–]ArsenalPackers91 0 points1 point ago

That one was taken from Gregg Easterbrook on ESPN. He's got a similar nickname for most of the teams, usually for when they play poorly. The Pats are the Flying Elvii and he refers to the Giants and Jets as Jersey/A and Jersey/B (since both teams play in Jersey despite calling themselves NY)

[–]guns_of_navarone 9 points10 points ago

LOL DEAL WITH IT NERD

edit: JESUS CHRIST I THOUGHT THIS WAS /r/nfl

[–]this_sort_of_thing 19 points20 points ago

One of my favourite days on reddit. Even the /r/nfl comments were hilarious. Someone had Reading as their flair "Everyone be quiet, I'm reading"

[–]Real MadridTheJabrone 15 points16 points ago

This day was hilarious. Great collection OP, that last one had me in stitches.

[–]Real MadridAT_tHE_mIST 7 points8 points ago

ha... it's funny to see people who have no idea who the Titans are since I'm in Tennessee.

[–]Evertonfireinthesky7 6 points7 points ago

I just moved to Nashville. I won't be able to look at their logo without thinking "flaming thumbtacks" now.

[–]hustlerrr 7 points8 points ago

The one about the Steelers "GET IN" after finding out about most Superbowls was my favourite, but I loved all of these. Can this happen all the time?

[–]Birmingham CityQuackCandle078 6 points7 points ago

The one and only time I'll get that much comment karma!

[–]Chelseak3duckfan 6 points7 points ago

As a hardcore football fan and former soccer hater, this was my favorite thread in r/soccer and r/nfl history.

[–]ArsenalSullen_Choirboy 7 points8 points ago

I iterally LOL. Oh man, I wish I was on Reddit when this happened. Maybe the next one will involve /r/nba or /r/hockey. I'd love to know what /r/soccer would think of the Canucks logo.

[–]AC MilanStallyn19 1 point2 points ago

[–]LiverpoolThatsATacoJob 2 points3 points ago

[–]Arsenaljkonine 3 points4 points ago

They should switch them with Major League Baseball this year.

[–]Bayern Münchenctc003 3 points4 points ago

Can we please do this again?

[–]InternazionaleKlirisChi 2 points3 points ago

The last one had me loling hard

[–]Tottenham HotspurSouth_Dakotan 2 points3 points ago

What about the lazer eye'd buffalo?

[–]Stevenage BoroughJackpot777 2 points3 points ago

As (possibly) the only hardcore Stevenage fan in Pennsylvania (back from the Conference days, when they WERE The Boro, denied professional status because of some arbitrary grounds improvement deadline, forcing Newcastle to an FA Cup replay, etc.)... getting the Dirty Birds (Atlanta Falcons) instead of the Eagles royally pissed. Me. Off.

They should do it again next year, but switch to your competitor. Liverpool gets Everton. Lazio gets Roma. NY Red Bulls gets the Revolution or the Union. And yes, Stevenage gets Tranmere.

[–]Tottenham HotspurSkittlebean 2 points3 points ago

OMG, pure genius. I need to get my logo on NFL so that if it happens again I can have twice the lulz.

[–]FC Schalke 04jtoj 2 points3 points ago

Ironically, I was Arsenal that day.

[–]Liverpoolbuckeyes75 2 points3 points ago

Worst day ever, made me a Patriots fan and an Arsenal supporter. I don't even want to think about liking either of those teams.

[–]Brighton & Hove Albionsjk97 2 points3 points ago

I feel proud to have been a part of that. Orange-Helmeted Sportsmen of America killed me.

[–]LiverpoolFluffyPineapple43 2 points3 points ago

[–]Port ValeAccount_Eliminator 3 points4 points ago

[–]Tottenham HotspurJaksiel 4 points5 points ago

I wasn't yet subscribed to this sub-reddit when this happened. This is awesome. Despite everything, my favorite is "ARR IM A PIRATE."
