they are all pretty much the non-youtube links from that subreddit.

[–]thetoethumb -1 points0 points ago

Yes, you're right, they are all from that sub. I was pleasantly surprised to see that three of the gifs in that album were made by me.

[–]quaterindie 19 points20 points ago

Very cool!

It would be nice to get a list of what all of the reactions are.

[–]thetoethumb 2 points3 points ago

Mod of /r/chemicalreactiongifs here.

  1. Chemiluminescence using Nitrous Oxide and Carbon Disulfide

  2. Cesium reacting with water

  3. (Probably ethanol) burning inside a jar

  4. Burning Lithium

  5. Elephant toothpaste reaction (essentially produces soapy, foamy water). Here is another example.

  6. Explosive polymerization of P Nitro Aniline.

  7. Manganese (VII) Oxide explosively reducing organic matter (paper in this case). (Details)

  8. Sodium Polyacrylate, the stuff they use for fake snow

  9. A super saturated solution of Sodium Acetate. (I explained supersaturation over here)

  10. Japanese candy

  11. Detonation of nitrogen triiodine using a feather

Edit: Added more links

[–]Carvinrawks 0 points1 point ago

FIVE.

[–]souzaphone711 0 points1 point ago

That last one is a Nitrogen Tri-Iodide explosion. # 3 is just coating the inside of that container with a little bit of pure alcohol and lighting it. #10 is a candy, but as I recall it's not sold anywhere in the US, and the name escapes me at the moment. Hope that helps a bit.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 0 points1 point ago

Looks like big league chew when it comes out. Then they cut it into tabacco shaped form, and sell it to children. It's ok, I'm sure no children chewed tobacco because of the appeal. (Hint: I'm lying I did).

1)? Probably burning a column of hydrogen 2) Alkali metal and water. Probably potassium, judging from the energy of the reaction 3) Burning solvent vapor in a bottle. It only burns at the top where there is enough oxygen 4)? 5) Elephant tootphaste 6) Explosive Polymerization of p Nitro Aniline with sulfuric acid 7) Probably tissue soaked in something flamable dipped into a strong oxidising agent like manganese superoxide 8) Expansion of a hydrogel (I might be wrong with that one) 9) Saturated sodium acetate solution crashing out 10) Japanese candy 11) Nitrogen triiodine. Touch explosives. Super fun.

Thank you

[–]ayrfield2 1 point2 points ago

Personally, i also recommend this one; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nyzlt-dVgWQ

Thank you!

[–]iLurkkkkk 0 points1 point ago

Hahahaha, I like how every other one is well thought out and explained except for 10. Simply, Japanese candy!

[–]invisabill 13 points14 points ago

[–]mrguy123 5 points6 points ago

You'll be lucky if they let you be near serious chemicals in high school.

[–]megustcizer -2 points-1 points ago

We play with lye and copper sulfate all the time. Those are pretty serious in my opinion, considering you will be blind instantly if it gets in your eyes.

[–]rushpup 0 points1 point ago

You might be interested in crossposting some of these to /r/chemicalreactiongifs

[–]McJaeger 2 points3 points ago

They're all ripped straight from that subreddit. OP.

[–]CrazedRedditor[S] 0 points1 point ago

I know.

[–]Average_Toaster 1 point2 points ago

This didn't make me laugh... But you still earned my upboat with science.

[–]RaVNzCRoFT 4 points5 points ago

The second to last one is actually a type of Japanese candy.

[–]GreenAdder 1 point2 points ago

So we're just going to find obscure subreddits and then make albums out of their animated gifs? This is going to be a thing now?

[–]IamSparticles 2 points3 points ago

If you're not a subscriber to the Periodic Videos series on YouTube, you should be.

[–]Toothpicke 2 points3 points ago

His hair and his serious enthusiasm for the subject turned those videos into a must-see!

[–]rcbrice 2 points3 points ago

Oh but that's how they lure you in! They show you all sorts of amazing chemical reactions to get you interested in the topic. And that's all fine and dandy while in high school but college is a different story. No...in college chemistry goes from mixing all sorts of amazing chemicals to applying derivatives in chemical equations and stressing over iterations (essentially educated guessing) measurements while trying to calculate Van der Waals equation values.

After 3 general chemistry labs and 2 organic chemistry labs, the most fun I've had in chemistry was during an aspirin synthesis experiment. While I did feel like I was in the middle of a "Breaking Bad" episode half the time, the real highlight of the lab was when someone decided to make the observation: "[Impure] aspirin sort of looks like cocaine!" Everyone giggled.

TL;DR: Chemistry goes from neat volatile reactions in HS to mainly mathematical calculations and (mostly) nonreactive mixtures in college!

[–]prydek 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, it gets better... if you're a chem major that is.

[–]rcbrice 1 point2 points ago

(Un)fortunately (depending on your perspective), I'm actually a Biology major. To be honest, I actually enjoy Organic Chemistry a lot more than General Chemistry. Chemistry majors at my school (UCI) move on to Physical Chemistry and, from what I've heard, that's when the majority of Chemistry majors decide to switch to a different science major.

All in all, the topic is relatively fun but I guess it really depends on your professors.

[–]prydek 0 points1 point ago

Inorganic chemistry lab is where it's at. Seriously, that's where all the fun happens.

[–]KrunoS 0 points1 point ago

I am, and my experiences are so different to rcbrice. I love every aspect of it, except analytical chem lab, that can go to hell and rot.

[–]prydek 1 point2 points ago

haha is it all the error propagation? Or the fact that depending on the lab it can take aaaaalllllll day just sitting at an instrument?

[–]KrunoS 0 points1 point ago

It's the boring tedium of preparing solutions and then having to sit all day at an instrument.

Usually when i make mistakes i immediately realise that i fucked up, so even though it's a kick in the teeth it's just a single step.

I've only had 1 go experiment go wrong, and even though it went wrong, the calibration curve was relatively good considering how many steps were involved and how imprecise/incomplete our glassware is, it had the best R out of all other teams and arguably got the hardest one to do.

[–]prydek 0 points1 point ago

Ah the sweet satisfaction of a good results after completely fucking up the experiment. That's how real science is done.

[–]KrunoS 0 points1 point ago

I love those mathematical models, i wanna be a computer chemist and do molecular orbital theory.

The bangs are a plus. Though i hate my analytical chem lab, so much tediousness.

[–]leertandy -1 points0 points ago

reasons i took chem with an apathetic teacher? im an idiot.

[–]prydek -1 points0 points ago

And this is why I majored in Chemistry. In Inorganic lab you make explosives on the first day.

[–]fluffysanchez -1 points0 points ago

The old alcohol in water jug always makes me happy

[–]Lemon_Tile -1 points0 points ago

This is pretty much the first day of my chem lab in college. After that it was just boring titration junk

[–]aphan3 0 points1 point ago

I recognize the last one. Nitrogen triiodide. Tried to make that by taking the reagents from the AP Chem stock room, but I wasn't able to find the iodine crystals anywhere.

[–]gino3298 0 points1 point ago

What is the second from last one? That just looks awesome beyond words.

[–]jrten 0 points1 point ago

I took chemistry in high school, the only "experiment" I got to so was learn different ways to make soda flat....

[–]RedPandaMediaGroup 0 points1 point ago

I just took it because it's required.

[–]Sprocketlord 1 point2 points ago

And really all you got were mole calculation problems.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 0 points1 point ago

What 90% of redditors are thinking: "A) Do I currently have any of these? B) What can I blow up?"

[–]Dlockett 0 points1 point ago

TIL that I had an extremely boring Chemistry class.

[–]killerchipmunk 0 points1 point ago

I did the foam one at a science fair for my old middle school. We added some food coloring to the sides before the reaction an called it "elephant toothpaste." The looks on the kids' faces when the foam "exploded" were priceless.

[–]ieatcrayons 0 points1 point ago

Explain #6. Right fucking now.

Seriously, I'm going to get so much ass when I show this off next weekend.

[–]TheTeetotaler 0 points1 point ago

"This, is not Meth."

[–]fenney 1 point2 points ago

I didn't do any of this shit at school. None of those were titrations.

[–]A_Redhead -1 points0 points ago

apparently the 10th gif is some kind of Japanese candy if I'm not mistaken

[–]nowaffles4u -1 points0 points ago

SCIENCE FUCK YEAH!

[–]piepdarfur -1 points0 points ago

Science Bitches!

[–]jmikec93 -2 points-1 points ago

Chemistry is a gigantic pain in the ass

[–]eff_bawmb 0 points1 point ago

Motherfuckin' science, bitches.

[–]Uberschwanz 0 points1 point ago

really, and how many of these experiments would actually be allowed in a high school chemistry course?

[–]for2fly 2 points3 points ago

We used to do the corafoam experiment, made potassium nitrate, lidocaine, did water electrolysis (made hydrogen) burned magnesium powder, played with liquid nitrogen, dissected fireworks, exploded things, toyed with a Van Der Graaf generator, and a lot of other things in high school. Of course this was back in the late '70's.

All my biology teachers were interesting also. I learned a lot about plant-based therapeutic remedies.

[–]KrunoS 0 points1 point ago

This is the reason why i chose to study chemistry.

In fact, that last reaction is probably an nitrogen triiodide. We did that very reaction with potential future freshmen. It was really, really loud and we used a tiny amount. Can't imagine how freakin loud the gif's reaction was.

And i've been learning about those absorbant gels in reaction my kinetics and dynamics class. Some of them have 10km of surface area per gram, amazing stuff.

[–]heymrk -1 points0 points ago

It was a requirement for me.
