Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

that's one of the nicest rear views of a console case mod I've seen.

[–]thecoolsteve 136 points137 points ago

Dat ass. :3

[–]skyman724 36 points37 points ago

I'd like to put my cable in dat socket........

[–]eduardog3000 31 points32 points ago

What's wrong with your dick?

[–]kwent589 68 points69 points ago

Uncircumcised

[–]The_Ginja_Ninja 9 points10 points ago

Circumcision gone horribly wrong.

[–]goblinpiledriver 6 points7 points ago

captain circumcision got a bit overzealous.

[–]skyman724 2 points3 points ago

cable

[–]eduardog3000 2 points3 points ago

Well I read that wrong.

[–]Lightning_Saix 2 points3 points ago

It's in a socket

[–]ChetBenning 19 points20 points ago

Yeah, beats the usual mess of bondo/hacked up tupperware one usually sees.

[–]SixshooteR32 7 points8 points ago

Does the controller ports work with an emulator or am I a dreamer?

[–]ChetBenning 9 points10 points ago

Just from looking, probably not. It would be possible to do that, but you would need an N64 to usb adapter on each port going to the motherboard.

[–]SixshooteR32 6 points7 points ago

yea, i have seen those with 4 ports in one before.

[–]dipsnap86 3 points4 points ago

The one I have has 2 ports on it, so you'd only need to sacrifice 2 USB ports to do this. What would be better is to embed USB ports where the original controller ports are so you have more options about what you plug into the "console".

[–]Rodents210 0 points1 point ago

USB can support over 100 devices per controller, so you would just need a hub inside the case and you could theoretically attach all four ports to a single USB controller on the motherboard and still have that controller run out to an outside port. In fact, there are DIY projects for N64 to USB adaptors that are extremely simple.

[–]dirice87 -5 points-4 points ago

Looking at the hookups in the back, it looks like it even retained the original parts, and can play games without an emulator, straight from the cartridge. I'd really like to see it opened up as its pretty impressive to fit all of that in there plus a whole computer, while keeping it cool, and leaving a sizable space in the middle for the cartridge.

EDIT: Apparantly it can't. I'm looking at pics of the internals and can't figure out what the coaxial connection is for, I've never seen them on a modern motherboard. First guess is audio, but why?

[–]KazakTheSpaceDog 12 points13 points ago

The original parts are gone bro, it no longer has the n64 guts. just look at the cartridge slot, its a fan vent now.

[–]Viper_H 7 points8 points ago

Which coaxial connection? The two gold screw-ports on the far right? They're for wi-fi aerials.

[–]unlimitednights 27 points28 points ago

Its a small thing, but I like that the ports are actually properly cut around. Usually when people do case mods its just a shit show in the back of big cut outs and it looks awful, this is great.

[–]Halequin 4 points5 points ago

I helped build the toaster computer a few months back, I would link it but Im on my phone. If you search Toaster Computer it should come up. Anyway, that was probably the most difficult thing in the entire build in my opinion. I have respect for this man who did this mod.

[–]a1blank 1 point2 points ago

[–]Halequin 1 point2 points ago

[This](www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/ym3bs/build_complete_toaster_oven_computer/) We cut the back wrong. We measured twice, cut once, and cut about 3/4ths of an inch to the lower left. DON'T LOOK AT THAT DUCT TAPE.

[–]The_Director 18 points19 points ago

If the controller ports work, it would be an awesome emulator.

Mario Party 2 at 1080p mixed with a drinking game? Yes please.

[–]The_Director 26 points27 points ago

Not if the emulator renders it at 1080p instead of upscalling it, and use the proper 4:3 resolution. 1440x1080.

[–]Xx420xcirclejerker69 21 points22 points ago

I'll have whatever you are smoking please.

[–]The_Director 29 points30 points ago

You can actually play console games on emulators at higher resolutions, even with AA.

This is Skyward Sword at 1080p, not upscaled.

This is Final Fantaxy XII, left 1080p, right 480p

[–]DeliciousDoughnuts 11 points12 points ago

I'm playing through FFXII in 1080p right now! (well, not RIGHT now) It's pretty fantastic being able to play through the game that I own but can't play because my ps3 has no backwards compatibility.

Plus, it looks ultra sexy instead of just having upscaled everything.

[–]flUddOS 3 points4 points ago

What settings are you using? I'm currently playing through FFXII on PCX2 from my actual game disk, and it looks awful. At first I thought it was due to nostalgia/poor rendering, but clearly that isn't the case.

[–]gsxr_jason 5 points6 points ago

I just played around with it and got some awesome results. In PCSX2 go to Config > Video > Plugin Settings.

From there I switched the Renderer to Direct3D11. Under D3D Internal resolution I switched it to 1920 x 1080. I enabled Shade Boost. I enabled HW Hacks and in the configuration for that I put MSAA at 2x and turned on AgressiveCRC.

[–]flUddOS 2 points3 points ago

Thanks! I can't believe how much better it looks!

[–]gsxr_jason 2 points3 points ago

Yep, no problem.

[–]dirice87 4 points5 points ago

But those are current gen games. Mario Party 2 still carries n64 textures, which I don't think can be helped by any amount of post processing short of a total texture pack overhaul

[–]The_Director 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, textures would look like crap, but the polygons would look really sweet and jagless.

[–]wtallis 5 points6 points ago

So? High-resolution texture packs for N64 games have been around for quite a while, and work really well, without much performance impact.

[–]Flukemaster 1 point2 points ago

The celshaded (or cartoon, can't remember) pack for OoT is particularly good.

[–]kkjdroid 0 points1 point ago

Well, a medium performance impact that you never notice because your computer can run it at 100FPS anyway.

[–]darkarchonlord 4 points5 points ago

As far as Nintendo games go, most of the 'textures' are barely more than colors so what you get is a game that 'feels' nostalgic but has sexy models, corners, and lines. Mario party looks great with an emulator.

[–]_Wolfos 5 points6 points ago

I'm playing through Wind Waker at 1680x1050 right now. It looks absolutely fantastic.

[–]Mikuro 2 points3 points ago

Out of curiosity, what kind of hardware do you need for those emulators to run well?

[–]The_Director 3 points4 points ago

Well... at 1080p you're going to need a decent one.

I wouldn't go lower than an i5 and a 6770 or 560.

Trying to emulate a different chip architecture without inside information is hard, so it consumes a lot of resources.

[–]Flukemaster 2 points3 points ago

You don't need a really good video card for emulation. It's more the CPU that matters. I can emulate most games on the integrated graphics on my 2500k if I desperately need to. Anything with 2 cores and more than 3GHz should be fine.

[–]zanotam 0 points1 point ago

Sorta. Most emulators are kinda low quality and then they have a bunch of hot fixes for specific games, versus doing proper emulation in the first place. At least, from what I've read on reddit, that's how things work.

[–]Xenxe 1 point2 points ago

Emulators run like a dream on my i5 and 560.

[–]TheBullshitPatrol 2 points3 points ago

Wow. I didn't fucking know that. I never would have assumed that you can upscale textures and whatnot like you can with your typical PC game, and I hadn't really ever played any newer console games on PC because the last time I checked (several years ago), the technology for it sucked ass.

Where are previous-gen emulators at now? Is playing PS2/GameCube/Xbox games actually an enjoyable and hitch free experience? If so, I may dig up my Xbox 360 controller and check it out. I'm on an i5-2400 and a GTX 670, FYI.

[–]Khaibit 1 point2 points ago

I don't know anything about Xbox emulation, but PS2 (through PCSX2) and GameCube/Wii (through Dolphin) are pretty well solid. There's always games that do weird things that don't quite work right in emulation, and some games take some tweaking, but through upscaling, AA/AF, and various other tweaks you can make games on that gen of consoles look pretty damn good.

[–]gsxr_jason 1 point2 points ago

What emulator / version of the game is that? I'd love to play through FF XII again in 1080p.

[–]Yourmyfavoritedeputy 1 point2 points ago

Alcoholics anonymous has no take on video games,

[–]harvest-moon 1 point2 points ago

Yup, my consoles are hooked up to a 1080p projector, and N64 Zeldas (actually most "3D" N64 games) are atrocious at 4:3 on my 106" screen. Everything else from NES to Wii are alright though.

[–]TeachMeHowToBeBrave 14 points15 points ago

So this is a mac computer in an n64? I am a bit tech challenged and confused.

[–]ChetBenning 19 points20 points ago

It's a "Hackintosh" which means non-Apple hardware modified to running a Mac OS.

Edited for generality

[–]hellowiththepudding 11 points12 points ago

The software is modified, not the hardware (okay sometimes specific firmware is needed, but not the point).

[–]ChetBenning 3 points4 points ago

Noted and edited, thanks.

[–]Koshercrab 5 points6 points ago

How did you cut the ports so precisely?

[–]luthiz 12 points13 points ago

I'll bet they traced the backplane insert that came with the motherboard.

[–]thecoolsteve 3 points4 points ago

clever!

[–]Koshercrab 3 points4 points ago

I mean the actual cutting. Usually when I see these computers shoved in game console, the back end is sloppy and they say something like "well, who ever looks at the back?" I'm impressed by how clean it looks.

[–]NextName 3 points4 points ago

It's pretty easy to chop a rectangular hole in the back of the console when it already has one, then just swap in the motherboard backplate.

[–]atleastzero 2 points3 points ago

Also, if there are no holes, you can still just drill a hole using a fat bit, then a dremel to get it into the right shape.

[–]Sammmmmmmm 6 points7 points ago

Probably a dremel with proper bits to do various cuts.

[–]draxor_666 39 points40 points ago

Yours now for only 1899.99

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 15 points16 points ago

Why would it be $1899.99?

  • N64 - $50
  • Cheap components - $200
  • White spray paint - $4

Total: $254

[–]BoxTopsMagoo 23 points24 points ago

I noticed a trace amount of aluminum and it looks pretty cool... +$1645

[–]RzK 42 points43 points ago

Im surprised that people dont ask your question towards Apple products

[–]KazakTheSpaceDog 12 points13 points ago

[–]spirgnob 9 points10 points ago

Labor - $1645.99

New Total: $1899.99

[–]sxepill 12 points13 points ago

Woosh.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow -2 points-1 points ago

See the other comments. There was no "whoosh" damnit!

[–]sxepill 4 points5 points ago

Was he not making a joke about how over-priced Apple products are?

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 7 points8 points ago

I think maybe he was, but this isn't an Apple product so I didn't think it fit. As we discussed in the other comments, it kinda fits. But I didn't find it fitting originally. We came to the agreement that it was a legitimate joke, just that it wasn't very funny.

Also, now I sound like a robot trying to understand human emotion.

[–]sxepill 3 points4 points ago

Haha yeah this getting awkward, I'm just gonna leave.

[–]g00dis0n 5 points6 points ago

It started getting awkward about 7 replies ago.

[–]Starwinds -1 points0 points ago

now-kiss.jpg

[–]Jourdy288 4 points5 points ago

You're forgetting labor.

[–]great_gape 7 points8 points ago

Who's building it? Alienware?

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 4 points5 points ago

Well, I'm assuming you'd do it yourself. But even if you paid someone else to do it that shouldn't cost $1.5k.

[–]MrCooper2012 59 points60 points ago

Or maybe he is making an Apple joke and it flew over your head at the speed of fucking light.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 5 points6 points ago

I considered that, but this is a "Hackintosh." It doesn't actually have any Apple parts, so that wouldn't make sense.

[–]MrCooper2012 10 points11 points ago

Right, but it's obviously going for the Apple look, wouldn't you agree? So I think going for an Apple reference works. I'm not saying the joke was funny, but last I checked no comedians were scratching out jokes due to factual inaccuracies.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, you're probably right.

[–]Adtwerk 5 points6 points ago

Am I allowed to laugh at draxor's joke now? Have we explained it enough?

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 1 point2 points ago

Sure, go ahead!

[–]xwhizdumbx -3 points-2 points ago

So spray painting something white, makes it look like an apple product(?) With that logic this white wall I'm sitting in front of is very mac influenced, apple should probably sue.

[–]MrCooper2012 1 point2 points ago

It's a "Hackintosh", so the Apple reference is pretty damn obvious. Also, don't give Apple any ideas.

[–]xwhizdumbx 2 points3 points ago

Luckily the wall doesn't have rounded corners.

[–]sarcasticmrfox 0 points1 point ago

That just means the components used enable it to run OSX.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 0 points1 point ago

Huh? OSX should run on generic components.

[–]greatchickenman -1 points0 points ago

I don't think the latest versions have been made to work on AMD processors.

Edit: actually, I may be wrong. It certainly seems like intel is preferred, though.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, Intel is the way to go for a Hackintosh.

Honestly, I was an AMD/ATI fan for a long time. But I have to admit they're really not a good idea. Way too buggy for most games. Unless a lot changes, my next build is going to be Intel.

[–]kngkeeper 0 points1 point ago

OS X has terrible hardware support though (because Apple only packages specific hardware). That complicates things.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 0 points1 point ago

That's true, but you can still buy compatible hardware for regular market prices.

[–]TheBullshitPatrol 0 points1 point ago

So much work to build the computer, dremel the I/O holes, and spray paint it white...

[–]Brad13186 0 points1 point ago

So where can I buy?

[–]itrollulol 1 point2 points ago

It's a mac.

[–]cptbil 6 points7 points ago

If it doesn't really use the NEC VR4300 or any other N64 hardware, it isn't really Nintendo 64-based. More of a case mod. Of course you can't run any mac OS on that hardware anyway.

[–]ONXwat 3 points4 points ago

If anyone does not have an n64, and can pay for shipping, i will ship you one minus the cords. It has a jumper pack, no expansion pack.

I am not joking. I have a hey you pikachu n64, and another n64 that i used the cables for the pikachu one. I have no use for my second n64. Keep in mind, it has a sticky reset key.

edit: someone has asked for it, but PM me anyway just in case that doesnt work out.

[–]DaveFishBulb 3 points4 points ago

Can't you just jizz in a tissue like a human?

[–]ONXwat 0 points1 point ago

bahahahaha, it is not sticky for that reason. i'm honestly not sure why it is, it just sticks.

[–]konyismydad 0 points1 point ago

Is this still a thing? Am I too late?!

[–]ONXwat 0 points1 point ago

sure, check your pms.

[–]ONXwat 0 points1 point ago

You are definitely not too late.

[–]OffendedWhiteGirl 3 points4 points ago

1 in a million chance of finding an albino N64!

[–]dickcheney777 6 points7 points ago

Why downgrade a superior N64 to OSX?

[–]Jourdy288 5 points6 points ago

That's pretty cool, but I think it would hilarious irony to use the thing for PS1 emulation.

[–]CocoDaPuf 2 points3 points ago

haha, I hadn't even thought of that. Although my first thought was "yeah, there's a great N64 emulator on the mac".

[–]RickVince 0 points1 point ago

My old NES has somewhat yellowed over the last 2 decades. What's the best way to make it look new again.

Take it apart and spray paint the shell? Anyone know what specific color I should use?

[–]overlord00 25 points26 points ago

This is so sweet, i love this kinda stuff. do you have pics from the design/build process?

[–]br_ion 2 points3 points ago

thanks man!

[–]jugsjudy 3 points4 points ago

I want it!

[–]AmantisAsoko 1 point2 points ago

You made that beautiful thing then put Mac OS on it? :(

[–]Schreber 0 points1 point ago

When and/or where did they release a white N64 unit?

[–]U_DONT_KNOW_TEAM 23 points24 points ago

The guy intensely modded the damn thing but you can't imagine that he might have spray painted it?

[–]aarond12 2 points3 points ago

Goddamn, some Redditors suck. Why the fuck does a HACKINTOSH thread devolve into a fucking "Mac/PC" thread? FUCK! It's a goddamned PC that runs Mac OS! You'd think Windows people would LOVE this mod!

[–]caltheon 1 point2 points ago

What i don't get is the need to even point out what OS it's running. It's just a Micro-ATX case jammed into an N64. Not really even original, if well executed.

[–]Tier4 3 points4 points ago

You mean a MicroATX motherboard, not case, and it's most likely mini ITX.

:P

[–]caltheon 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, mb not case. Not sure a mini and PS would fit in there.

[–]JarekBloodDragon -2 points-1 points ago

Why would you want a closed down OS that sucks?

[–]arlenreyb 5 points6 points ago

Probably because it's less bloated, faster, and costs $50 less.

Source: just built a hackintosh last month, that runs both Windows 7 and Mountain Lion.

[–]duhbeetus 1 point2 points ago

Linux. Fuck your OSs.

[–]nige111 1 point2 points ago

Took the words right out of my mouth.

[–]Ringwaul 0 points1 point ago

If you're going to build your own computer, at least have some self respect and put Linux on it...

[–]The_Mighty_Spork 0 points1 point ago

Hell if you really want Mac OS it's not even hard to make Linux look like Mac OS anyway, I made my old ubuntu laptop look like a Mac OSX clone.

[–]sargENT_shart 0 points1 point ago

So are those controller ports live for emulator gaming? If not, I wonder why he didn't put 4 more USB ports in just for fun..

[–]Miningdude 0 points1 point ago

Nice... I like it!

[–]Vitagox 0 points1 point ago

That is going to attract dirt like a magnet.

[–]nige111 -4 points-3 points ago

More like attract dick like a mac user.

[–]SenatorIvy 0 points1 point ago

[–]Nwambe 0 points1 point ago

I must have one. I must. Who can make this for me, and how much?

[–]willanthony 0 points1 point ago

Stormtrooper helmet.

[–]toodrunk 0 points1 point ago

How is it N64 based? It's just the case...

[–]wimpy_10 1 point2 points ago

whete's the powersupply?

[–]powerz325 0 points1 point ago

There's probably an external AC adapter, like how a laptop would work on a charger.

[–]KDIZZLL2 0 points1 point ago

That is some beautiful aesthetic engineering.

[–]theidleidol 1 point2 points ago

I love my MacBook, but I will be very sad if the innards of this N64 didn't make it into some other epic case. The thought of murdering a console to put a Hackintosh in it is sickening.

[–]The_Mighty_Spork 1 point2 points ago

It could've been a dead console from spillage, power surge etc. Because we all know n64s don't die naturally.

[–]batfiend 0 points1 point ago

Can I have it?

[–]racerx52 -1 points0 points ago

Ahh. So it is doubly useless.

[–]Shermanpk -1 points0 points ago

I am pretty sure it is not a Hackintosh.

[–]bangupjobasusual 0 points1 point ago

No power supply?

[–]steakmeout -1 points0 points ago

That's not a Hackintosh. It's a Media Center PC.

[–]johnturkey 0 points1 point ago

[–]shhyguuy 0 points1 point ago

LOL I didn't catch it at first but you're right. Very relevant username.

[–]DollarsThanSense -5 points-4 points ago

It's just that some people seem to be under the impression here that Macs are only good for Facebook and that the OS can't stand up to the tried and tested Windows.

[–]malstank 6 points7 points ago

You'll find that real technicians could care less about what OS you use, provided it does what you need it to do. I just attribute mac purchasers to more dollars than sense, as Macs are extremely overpriced.

[–]randomaccn0 0 points1 point ago

Whilst it may have have been true in the past that Macs were overpriced, and probably is still true with at least the Mac Pro, I generally disagree.

It is not easy to make a laptop with the same specs as a MacBook Pro, or a MacBook Air, and not many manufacturers have managed that I've seen. Perhaps I'm not that up to date, but the few 'Ultrabooks' I've seen that can match similarly spec'd Macbook Pros are as expensive, or even more expensive.

Happy to be proved wrong, but I'm not convinced that they are 'extremely overpriced'. If you don't like them, that's cool.

[–]Jourdy288 5 points6 points ago

Looks around shiftily As a Mac and a PC user, I have to say that while I like OSX for being stable (most of the time), I have mixed feelings as to whether it's "better" than Windows or not. Sure, it doesn't crash quite as much, and it's harder to fill with junk, but quite frankly there's not as much junk to put on a Mac, and I'm kind of upset that the operating system is (only officially) supported on machines made by Apple.

On the one hand, there's the advantage of unified hardware- it's like a game console, what works on one will work with most, no Googling required. On the other hand, it feels monopolistic and like some sort of nasty restriction on better, faster hardware. Case in point, I can't upgrade the HDD on my Mac- I can only swap out RAM.

Therefore, my next machine will probably dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

[–]_Wolfos 1 point2 points ago

As a Mac user, that doesn't even make any sense. Yes, OSX is a fantastic OS but...

[–]imbarkus -2 points-1 points ago

May have new guts... still has no gaems.

[–]Seref15 -1 points0 points ago

But... why would you use a Mac OS for a gaming device?

[–]Jeeonta 1 point2 points ago

That is one nice Stormtrooper you have.

[–]Crunchatizme -3 points-2 points ago

I would shove my fat cock into the beautiful controller ports so I could be one with my video game fantasy of fucking Peach in the ass. Fuck Yeah

[–]caspissinclair 3 points4 points ago

If you can fit in the controller port then it most definitely isn't fat.
