this guy managed to ruin both mid life crisis'

[–]Backstop 27 points28 points ago

IN case you cae, there is a plural for crisis, it's crises.

[–]Anindoorcat 17 points18 points ago

I struggled with that one and went with my gut, but thanks. noted.

[–]GameMisconduct63 32 points33 points ago

Wow, then in this case, it was basically 100% the bikers fault, and not the Vette's

[–]NiceGuysFinishLast 24 points25 points ago

No basically about it. As a rider, that rider was 100% at fault.

Showing off for anyone, especially cameras or girls almost always has bad results... At least, in my experience.

[–]thewarehouse 4 points5 points ago

My wife has a titanium rod in her femur because my roomate in college was showing off while taking her on a ride on his motorcycle.

[–]conrick -2 points-1 points ago

The Vette's driver.

[–]tonypotenza 96 points97 points ago

Old guy in the car : business as usual.

[–]fourpac 19 points20 points ago

It's creepy that he has no reaction at all. I know this probably happened really quickly, but his head does not move, eyes straight ahead.

[–]drqshadow 30 points31 points ago

Probably because he's trying not to veer into the woods. He definitely knows what's going on, hence his going out of his way to give the biker room for correction.

[–]Kazurik 20 points21 points ago

This appears to be on the Dragon so chances are he isn't looking at the woods but instead is looking at a very steep drop off a mountain side.

[–]penny013 5 points6 points ago

I know exactly what turn this is. I think the photographer was probably Kilboy. I hope the cop I ok

[–]c0c0nut_crab 0 points1 point ago

Cop with camouflage pants?

[–]Gooberpatrol66 5 points6 points ago

Or more likely, his reflexes haven't had time to react by the time this picture was taken.

[–]fourpac 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, he tried to avoid it, but still... no "oh shit" face? The impact alone should have garnered some response. My guess? Terminator.

[–]Rosetta_Stoned88 9 points10 points ago

Did you guys notice his air bag is coming right at his face?

[–]sux9000 1 point2 points ago

Was just going to mention that. But maybe he likes to keep a pillow there.

[–]Tech_Support 4 points5 points ago

If you look at drakino's link, you'll see that the motorcycle veered in front of the car out of a turn. There was probably very little time to react on the part of the car driver.

I made the same assumption you did to start off with, but in this case it's just not his fault.

[–]nanarpus 0 points1 point ago

You can also see that the car is clearly slowing down and swerving to give the biker extra room.

[–]eugenesbluegenes 7 points8 points ago

You can also see that the car's airbag is in the process of deploying.

[–]ch00f 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know if a car can still be driven while/after the airbag is deployed? I feel like the steering wheel should stop taking input from the driver once his hands are forcefully removed from the wheel.

[–]bedintruder 0 points1 point ago

I think he was just referring to his facial expression.

[–]irish2owner 0 points1 point ago

He's getting hit I'm the face with an airbag. That kind've limits your range of facial expressions.

[–]Code347 21 points22 points ago

Fucking off, one hand on the bars, curve approaching = bad times.

[–]neva5eez[S] 32 points33 points ago

The car / bike were both written off the superman flying in the air survived and was walking / talking right after this, possibly broken wrist / forearm.

[–]Der_Dingel 16 points17 points ago

I had a similar accident where I also went flying for about 10 meters. Only difference was that the car I hit was an SUV with bull bar. All I had was a broken wrist too. Not counting the sore muscles all over my body the next day. Wear a helmet, kids.

[–]Godfodder 8 points9 points ago

How was the Corvette written off?? Surely there wasn't more damage than what the vehicle is worth.

[–]SkySilver 12 points13 points ago

Plastic costs money too.

[–]Godfodder 5 points6 points ago

Didn't downvote, but that much money?

[–]SkySilver 3 points4 points ago

It might be a Corvette, but probably 10 years old, at least 8. I'd bet that the bumper and fender alone will cost over 1000$.

[–]methshin 4 points5 points ago

Don't forget about the suspension, which probably took a beating as well.

[–]gsfgf 5 points6 points ago

And the airbag went off. And there were so many C5's built (and still in existence) that they're just not worth a whole lot these days.

[–]kg333 6 points7 points ago

It was a 2001 with well over 100,000 miles on it, if I remember correctly, and the bike did some major damage to systems underneath that corner.

[–]UFEngi88 1 point2 points ago

might have hit a tree at the end of the sequence though it looks like he was almost at a stop. Lucky he didn't end up 200 ft down the mountain side.

[–]GerniePain 2 points3 points ago

Also, there is a report that another bike came around the corner later and crashed after hitting fluids that were still on the road. This second rider got very seriously injured.

edit :A messege from his wife, Mel

Jeff is now stable but still in critical condition. Injuries he has sustained include fractured skull at frontal lobe and orbital area, missing four front teeth with torn lip, facial reconstruction in the future, broken C1,C2,T3,L2,L3 and L4, broken ribs on both sides and collapsed lungs with lacerations to liver and kidney. Thank you for all your love, prayers, and support.

Apparently his arms and legs are okay. Holy Fuck! That is just wrong. I have chronic pain and the depression that goes with it sucks ass. I hope that he can deal with this well and have people around him that love and care for him.

[–]aceslick911 0 points1 point ago

If you check out the gif I think that's pretty much the whole story..

[–]kinkkulainen 5 points6 points ago

I love that it even captured the airbag while it was delpoyed.

[–]E-Squid 1 point2 points ago

I noticed that. Upon preliminary inspection, it looks like the car just plowed through the bike like a hot knife through butter and the driver goes on unphased, but you can kind of tell that the shot occurred in the split second after the impact where their brains would still be processing the impact and the moments just before it.

[–]theweeeone 0 points1 point ago

momentum

[–]slahaw 10 points11 points ago

How in the hell was the scene captured?!

[–]pizooozooo 50 points51 points ago

  1. Set up high speed camera

  2. Cause accidents

  3. Karma

[–]ilovecherries 9 points10 points ago

It's a very popular road for riding. There are photographers on every corner taking pictures and trying to sell them back to the riders.

[–]Tperk96 2 points3 points ago

Photographers like this will setup a camera around popular corners in the hills so riders/drivers can buy action shots of themselves.

[–]johnaldmcgee 1 point2 points ago

Looks like it's somewhere around here. People come to drive the curvy mountain road, and there are photographers at most of the curves taking pictures and selling high quality versions back to the drivers.

I went a few years ago and had a great time.

[–]qp9 11 points12 points ago

The bigger mid-life crisis always wins.

[–]Bravetoasterr 2 points3 points ago

Beautiful foliage in the background.

[–]drakino 135 points136 points ago

For the full sequence of events, start on the photo below and hit next. This one here is #19 in the sequence of 28. Looks like both involved came out of it okay.

http://xtremesportsphotography.photoreflect.com/store/Orderpage.aspx?pi=0QAK01AY080000&po=0&pc=28

This happened on US 129, aka Tail of the Dragon. Looking forward to riding it myself here in about 2 weeks, without a similar mishap though.

[–]TheN3rd 95 points96 points ago

...and this is why you should keep your eyes on the road, an not wave at the camera man while riding a motorcycle around dangerous corners.

[–]Cacafuego 14 points15 points ago

Looks like he wasn't paying attention to how tight the turn was and he got to choose whether to lay over and skid into the car or drive right into it. Apparently he chose right.

[–]Squeeums 74 points75 points ago

The bike could have made the turn, he got target fixation on the car and ran right into it. First rule of riding a motorcycle is to look where you want to go, he looked directly at the car.

[–]KEGEL_reminder 16 points17 points ago

that's exactly what i was thinking too, he just stood it up when he panicked

[–]fishbulbx 7 points8 points ago

That reminds me, I need to do my Kegel exercises.

[–]Napppy 0 points1 point ago

he might have hit the throttle too hard too when he got spooked and was conditioned to power out when in doubt. If you get on the power too much the bike naturally stands up. He probably just needed to maintain his speed and line once he had it, and would have been fine.. Good for him for walking away from that.

[–]jutct 8 points9 points ago

Like in racing, always look to the inside of the turn. Where you look is where you're gonna end up.

[–]Mr_Hank_Scorpio 21 points22 points ago

Alright I'm taking the afternoon off to look at sarah chalke.

[–]Red_means_go 7 points8 points ago

Fuck yes, Sarah Chalke.

[–]bofh420_1 0 points1 point ago

now I have to look her up... scrubs, hot, no nudes though

[–]TrafficRulesGuy 2 points3 points ago

Or.. he is new and turned the bars to the right instinctively and straitened the bike up and panicked. Sooo counter intuitive to turn the other way.

[–]Squeeums 2 points3 points ago

Look at photo's 11-18, he is staring directly at the car in all of them.

[–]NiceGuysFinishLast 1 point2 points ago

Actually, it's not counter intuitive at all. We've all been doing it since we got our first bicycles. So many riders do it intuitively that they will argue with you that they DON'T countersteer, which anyone who rides knows is impossible...

[–]ForensicFungineer 0 points1 point ago

Youre completely correct. Target fixation, not looking through the turn, and panic over calm.

[–]Kriicz 0 points1 point ago

Rule of driving anything*

[–]Divotus -2 points-1 points ago

came here to say this...

[–]Gottablender 9 points10 points ago

The biker went wide on that curve, but the motorcycle was absolutely capable of making that turn, especially with the extra room the motorist gave him. You can see the biker straighten the motorcycle out of the lean and ride right into the car. Basically the the biker got spooked and froze. It been mentioned already, but the phenomenon is referred to as target fixation.

[–]steve_yo 2 points3 points ago

I'm not so sure. In picture 10 he appears to be scraping his exhaust. If his exhaust came into contact with the road he would either have to layout the bike or straighten out a bit. I think he started scraping cement and straightened out.

[–]Gottablender 3 points4 points ago

Looking again you're probably right that was scraping/was close to scraping his exhaust. I still think he could have made the turn though if he hadn't straightened out all the way.

Or maybe not. He went into the curve on the inside rather than outside, started leaning too late, and probably had too much speed to begin with. Maybe his bike was incapable of making the turn given those factors.

[–]Farrit 2 points3 points ago

That's when you SHOULD slow down. Going at a slower speed, his bike would have been able to handle the tighter turn radius without scraping.

However, I think the general consensus on this is that this guy dun bad.

[–]jameson71 7 points8 points ago

Not paying attention on a motorcycle = this.

The guy is lucky as heck.

[–]fox00 22 points23 points ago

pictures 1-8: "hey, pay attention, asshole."

[–]Godfodder 25 points26 points ago

Wow, it was the biker's fault. It looks like he had a hard time waving and driving.

[–]SonofSonofSpock 2 points3 points ago

He probably would have been fine after that point if he hadn't fixated on the corvette and maintained his turn.

[–]RabidBlackSquirrel 15 points16 points ago

I definitely jumped to conclusions and was ready to blame the Corvette driver, because Corvette. Wasn't his fault at all though.

[–]YourLogicAgainstYou 16 points17 points ago

Funny, I did the opposite and immediately guessed motorcyclist. That logic hasn't failed me yet.

[–]BookwormSkates 3 points4 points ago

Well with all the crap the motorcyclist was carrying and the non sportiness of the bike I figured he would've been taking it easy.

[–]drmann1 2 points3 points ago

Live in Knoxville and often take a ride on the Dragon to clear my mind. I have seen these types of wrecks too many times. During the riding season you can hear about someone getting air lifted out at least once a month. That all being said I still love riding it.

[–]noeatnosleep 3 points4 points ago

Wow. Someone PLEASE gif this.

[–]Bennyboy1337 43 points44 points ago

Here is my own version.

[–]cheek_blushener 2 points3 points ago

Cool, now make it high resolution and remove the watermark, please!

[–]Bennyboy1337 0 points1 point ago

You have to pay for the non-watermark photos.

[–]cheek_blushener 7 points8 points ago

I was just making an unreasonable demand as a joke.

[–]Bennyboy1337 3 points4 points ago

[–]noeatnosleep -1 points0 points ago

Win.

[–]anonemouse2010 0 points1 point ago

You've done Gods work son.

[–]doubleu 15 points16 points ago

[–]Bennyboy1337 8 points9 points ago

Fuck, I just snipped all those damn proofs and made a GIF for no reason.

[–]noeatnosleep 0 points1 point ago

Awesome.

[–]pluffmudpie 0 points1 point ago

That is the only road I have ever felt remotely carsick on.

[–]Zachary9 1 point2 points ago

Well assuming that you're not a fat idiot, you should be ok.

[–]Anindoorcat 0 points1 point ago

A few people die every year riding on the tail..even though the speed limit is severely limited (35/45mph max)

[–]FlyenColors 0 points1 point ago

Having ridden it myself, I can say this was one of my biggest concerns. The oncoming traffic. Good luck and be careful around the switchbacks.

[–]kurin 1 point2 points ago

Maybe stay in your lane next time, guy.

[–]QcRoman 1 point2 points ago

This happened on US 129, aka Tail of the Dragon.

I looked at that one picture and it's the first place I thought of. Went once, loved it. It's the greatest road to drive on but it's also a scary one.

And no wonder people get airlifted out when wrecks happen, all the flashing lights and the sirens in the world can't make that ambulance go any faster around all those corners.

[–]NiceGuysFinishLast 0 points1 point ago

Meh, there are so many better, less congested roads around the Dragon. The Cherohala skyway, for one. Look out for Mile Marker 10, though. I hit that guard rail at 60mph... Not a fun day.

[–]drakino 1 point2 points ago

I intend to hit the other roads in the area too. Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to ride that one as well. Coming up on the last quarter of my 2 month tour, been awesome so far.

[–]x3knet -2 points-1 points ago

Hey... Here's an idea! Do your photoshoot on a closed fucking road!

[–]CrimsonAcid93 1 point2 points ago

poor Corvette...

[–]Bromskloss 2 points3 points ago

I'm trying to figure out which way the bike was coming from and what part of each vehicle collided with what.

[–]court12b 1 point2 points ago

I was too, The gif someone posted explains it all as well as why there was a camera man there.

[–]bump909 1 point2 points ago

If you ain't scrapin', you fakin'!

[–]iamagainstit 1 point2 points ago

not really perfect timing as it is a still from a video.

[–]iamagainstit 0 points1 point ago

at such a high frame rate that it might as well be film

[–]turnleftdale -1 points0 points ago

Haha what an asshole.

[–]ZeeHanzenShwanz 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god, is he okay?

[–]gliscameria -1 points0 points ago

Good thing he has those camo pants on. That should trick the road into not eating his legs.

[–]HoneyNinja 0 points1 point ago

I think he might need to check his forks after that one.

[–]khafra 1 point2 points ago

This is an actual perfect timing shot, bravo.

[–]varsitymk 0 points1 point ago

I see ACU pants, he should've had a pt belt on, this could've been prevented

[–]mynameisblair 0 points1 point ago

A motherfuckin' bird plane!

[–]GerniePain 0 points1 point ago

Also, there is a report that another bike came around the corner later and crashed after hitting fluids that were still on the road. This second rider got very seriously injured.

[–]A13X37 0 points1 point ago

The jump between 18 & 19 really grinds my gears.

[–]orphansince92 0 points1 point ago

Does he live?

[–]aceshighsays 0 points1 point ago

Oh My!

[–]thepolishcamera 0 points1 point ago

This is at the "Tail of the Dragon" right? I've been there. Cyclists share the road with Motorists and there are a ton of blind turns. People like to get loose and accidentally overshoot the lines. I bet this happens quite a bit. This photographer got a shot of a lifetime. Hope the dude is alright.

[–]Funkyfookarate 0 points1 point ago

Looks like tail of the dragon.

[–]Venrexx 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who thought "When pigs fly" when I seen this? lol

[–]Sup3rL33tBoss 0 points1 point ago

Well, there's your problem

[–]updatesforassholes 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand why he stood the bike up mid curve? To hit the Vette on purpose?

[–]jdk -1 points0 points ago

Perfect timing, stupid title.

It's head on. drakino provided a link to a gallery.

[–]Solarnynja -1 points0 points ago

DUMBFUCK

[–]culo_amor -5 points-4 points ago

Without looking at all the pictures, I just assumed the guy driving the Vette was at fault.

[–]ffn 9 points10 points ago

This is why you shouldn't make assumptions.

[–]culo_amor 0 points1 point ago

I assume you didn't read my reply correctly.

[–]ffn 0 points1 point ago

So what was the correct way to read your comment?

[–]wharthog3 2 points3 points ago

You would not be correct. There's a whole sequence posted in the comments now. Bike crossed over, target fixed and ran right into him.

[–]culo_amor 0 points1 point ago

You would not be correct. "Assumed" is what i said. I did look at the pictures and I know it wasn't the Vette's fault. Read my reply again.

[–]wharthog3 0 points1 point ago

Ah I see. I did not mean to offend (I feel like you took it that way) but merely wanted to provide you with more context if you hadn't seen it.

(I didn't downvote you either) Sorry for the confusion.

[–]mrbojangles9591 0 points1 point ago

I hope you never ever have jury duty.

[–]culo_amor 0 points1 point ago

I hope you never ever have to read something to save your life. I said 'assumed', past tense, I did look at the pictures.
