It is also the ultimate chick flick. Two chicks fighting to the death over a pair of shoes.

[–]Saiing 311 points312 points ago

Isn't that basically a description of every episode of Sex and the City?

Granted, I've never actually watched it.

[–]wow_great_name 275 points276 points ago

It also features binge eating and dildos.

[–]the_Magnet 186 points187 points ago

Sex and the city or the Wizard of OZ?

[–]wow_great_name 133 points134 points ago

Tin man wanted to ask Oz for a cock but they edited it to a heart for a PG audience.

[–]GarbageElitist 112 points113 points ago

While this is funny, it doesn't begin to describe how much of the Tin Man they actually edited to make it PG. In the book, I do believe he chops himself up into pieces or some shit when he's still human. It's pretty messed up.

[–]Asifys 81 points82 points ago

Shit, now I want to read the book.

[–]AadeeMoien 95 points96 points ago

Book(s) it's like an epic 12 part saga, the movie covers the first book, which was a walk to the corner store in terms of Oz (my teacher was a huge fan).

[–]bab270 122 points123 points ago

Shit, now I don't want to read the book anymore.

[–]Revoluzzer 41 points42 points ago

Because you want to read the books.

[–]Ingenium21 8 points9 points ago

I would love to read all of these fantastic stories, if it wasn't' for that pesky reading part.

[–]Electrorocket 14 points15 points ago

I have a friend with parents that have a bookshelf completely dedicated to the Chronicles of Oz. They have multiple editions of every book in it.

[–]HotRodLincoln 5 points6 points ago

Also, coupled with the fanfic prequal series including 'Wicked', 'Son of a Witch', 'A lion among men', and 'Out of Oz'.

[–]HogwartsNeedsWifi 5 points6 points ago

Those books do not mesh well (stylistically) with the Oz books.

[–]genital_furbies 8 points9 points ago

Here's s a great short film that tells the sad story of the Tin Man: "Heartless"

[–]luke2063 16 points17 points ago

Free as ebooks on Amazon! I'm reading The Wizard of Oz after just finishing reading Wicked, and it's really interesting to see the cleverness of some of the Wicked references.

[–]brandaustin 7 points8 points ago

Wicked is a genius work. The book not the musical. The amount of in references to the original and the new meaning from metaphor on what was already a book filled with symbolism is almost overloading.

[–]KenuR 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. I remember reading the first 3 books when I was a kid. What a journey that was!

[–]6times9is42 5 points6 points ago

There's an animated version I saw when I was really young that actually didn't change this part of the story. Wish I could remember which language it was dubbed into english from.

[–]thunderclapper 35 points36 points ago

the Japanese did it. bless their sadistic little hearts.

[–]GarbageElitist 6 points7 points ago

Perhaps German? I know their fairy tales can be pretty gruesome.

[–]bender_2982 31 points32 points ago

There once was a boy who liked to suck his thumbs. His mother asked him to stop but he wouldn't. So, she cut off his thumbs. Now he has no thumbs. Good night.

[–]PirateMud 3 points4 points ago

I had the Struwwelpeter book as a kid... completely horrifying tales. From the story of Johnny Suck-a-thumb, to a story about a girl that played with matches until one day she died in an inferno, a kid that took the piss out of black kids so a God dipped him in an inkwells, etc. They are available online now with all the illustrations, but I'm on my phone ATM... so I'll deliver when I get home!

[–]Charwinger21 1 point2 points ago

Yes.

[–]ENKC 61 points62 points ago

Go on.

[–]Cptn_Sisko 75 points76 points ago

Nope, thats about it.

[–]h2sbacteria 30 points31 points ago

Needs more penis.

[–]ImApigeon 118 points119 points ago

That is such a Samantha thing to say.

[–]OmegaArcadia 18 points19 points ago

It also features binge eating and dildos.

Needs more penis.

Wait, are we still talking about Wizard of Oz?

[–]kosmotron 14 points15 points ago

No, the other Oz.

[–]AadeeMoien 5 points6 points ago

My services have been requested?

[–]h2sbacteria 3 points4 points ago

Not while the sausage fest continues... another day on Reddit.

[–]aequitas3 7 points8 points ago

And binge eating dildos

[–]wow_great_name 2 points3 points ago

Deep throating dildos helps with the inevitable purge.

[–]aequitas3 3 points4 points ago

But then you are just hungry again. Must be chinese food dildos.

[–]Dshark 1 point2 points ago

Don't those dildos know that's unhealthy?

[–]gospelwut 17 points18 points ago

Sex in the City was originally intended to have a more satirical angle. Unfortunately, nobody got it and thus became fairly popular. After the first season, they dropped the satire in favor of pandering.

At least, that's what a (fairly smart) ex told me once.

[–]Oo0o8o0oO 10 points11 points ago

Sex and the City is to women as Entourage is to men. Vapid entertainment with excellent writing and occasionally fantastic acting.

[–]GTiernan 4 points5 points ago

excellent writing and occasionally fantastic acting? I must have missed this the few times I have watched it.

[–]Hexxas 1 point2 points ago

I tried watching 10 minutes of that show. All I remember is my testicles shrinking.

[–]trampus1 1 point2 points ago

It's a better show than you think. It was a dark time, I didn't have cable. There was nothing better on at that time slot.

[–]DocWarlock 10 points11 points ago

So how many years ago did you read that joke on the internet?

[–]aequitas3 66 points67 points ago

Heard it by word of mouth. It is a dying medium.

[–]DocWarlock 62 points63 points ago

The Psychics I murder are also dying mediums.

[–]aequitas3 50 points51 points ago

I foresee what you did there...

[–]ponyboycurtis22 25 points26 points ago

Well they didn't :(

[–]queenielios173 0 points1 point ago

I knew there was a reason it was my all time favorite movie. Girl goes through depression, kills 2 sisters, and says it was all a dream.

[–]Rasheeke 85 points86 points ago

Someone should make this into a game.

[–]Teotwawki69 209 points210 points ago

Call it Horror Movie. Two teams, write out titles of non-horror movies on slips of paper. Swap papers. Each team must give a horror movie description of the film they draw, but they're not allowed to use any words from the title of the movie (except articles and conjunctions.)

Example: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

"Eccentric businessman invites five children to his manufacturing plant, where each of them suffers an horrific accident in a macabre game to find the next CEO."

[–]wickerlicker 122 points123 points ago

Back to the Future.

The life of a defiantly rebellious teen takes a dark turn when he oversees a brutal murder, and goes on an incestuous, violent, selfish rampage in the past that will irrevocably destroy lives.

[–]tethur 130 points131 points ago

Toy Story: Two men from different backgrounds fight for the love of a young boy.

Men in Black: young black cop joins naturalisation and immigration services and learns about undocumented immigrants

edit

Band of Brothers: A group of mismatched American teens become friends during sightseeing tour through Europe

[–]ersatztruth 72 points73 points ago

I apparently suck at horror stories, but anti-stories are always fun, too...

A nerd with poor social skills studies math. - A Beautiful Mind

A pubescent boy discovers bodily functions he didn't know he possessed. - Harry Potter

A civil servant finds himself in reduced circumstances. - Gladiator

Two innocent men are hanged; no one is particularly bothered. - Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead

[–]bieberhole 47 points48 points ago

Highlander: Elderly Scottish immigrant gets head in New York city

[–]Youtubemoney 31 points32 points ago

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Maury Povich paternity results, in space.

[–]divinesleeper 41 points42 points ago

Mrs. Doubtfire: after a divorce, an irresponsible father undergoes a gender change in order to stalk his children and attempts to murder the new love interest of his ex-wife.

[–]justhadto 41 points42 points ago

Wall-E: trashy robot uses biological weapon to return humanity to the past.

Mary Poppins: telekinetic nanny makes children speak in tongues.

[–]vivvav 25 points26 points ago

The Lion King: Animals kill each other.

Spirited Away: A young girl is enslaved in Japan.

[–]sprucenoose 8 points9 points ago

Beauty and the Beast: Girl kidnapped by a man driven insane by his grotesque disfigurement grows to love her captor in a case study of Stockholm Syndrome.

[–]jshan87 6 points7 points ago

Land Before Time: A Tyrannosaurus Rex stalks baby dinosaurs and ducky's voice actress is brutally murdered by her father.

[–]uptwolait 3 points4 points ago

Caddyshack: Two hours of lines you can memorize and throw around for popularity points at parties for years to come.

[–]Chosenwaffle 3 points4 points ago

Titanic: Teenage hearthrob Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) finds himself unwittingly triggering the wrath of the ocean when he attempts to break the cursed bond between a rich Rose Bukater (Kate Winslet) and her violent husband-to-be. Grim chaos ensues when the unsinkable ship becomes corrupted by the seven deadly sins, and even greater threat: the abyssal depths.

[–]redbeardo 3 points4 points ago

The Shining

A writer on a block takes his family to a beautiful vacation hotel in an attempt to inspire his next best-seller. Meanwhile, his young son discovers his magical abilities.

[–]GeneralPurpose 37 points38 points ago

The Human Centipede

Brilliant reconstructive surgeon's plans for innovation in gastrointestinal research are disrupted when he is killed by three foreigners.

[–]TheAristrocrats 4 points5 points ago

Spoiler!

[–]AxelCaprio 16 points17 points ago

Or do the opposite.. Make horror movies sound good...

Saw: "The elderly man John lost his first born... Now he wants to do research on the human nature!"

[–]McSquizzee 17 points18 points ago

The Ring: "When watched, a magical tape releases a young girl from her TV prison where she is forced to live in a dark and damp well."

[–]frownyface 8 points9 points ago

Nitemare on Elm Street: "A former murderer returns to the community he wronged to help people understand that life is worth living."

[–]AxelCaprio 5 points6 points ago

House of Wax: "A group of friends goes out camping and they find a quiet town with a great attraction, a wax cabinet!"

[–]ENKC 17 points18 points ago

I'm too lazy to make this a subreddit. Someone get on it.

[–]bmwill 16 points17 points ago

I got you at /r/ActuallyHorror

[–]therockingbed 5 points6 points ago

This seems really fun! My friends and I are about to play this!

[–]KingWilson 2 points3 points ago

Silence of the Lambs "Eccentric foodie seeks out aspiring dermatologist, hilarity ensues."

[–]hurdur1 9 points10 points ago

It'd be like 'Alice.'

[–]hurdur1 193 points194 points ago

Technically they never did meet. She just kills the person right away.

[–]1upthebumnoharmdone 84 points85 points ago

she wasn't responsible for her death, so she didn't actually kill her, if we're nitpickin'

[–]the_Magnet 171 points172 points ago

We prefer the term "manslaughter"

[–]1upthebumnoharmdone 123 points124 points ago

charge never would have stuck, the whole thing would have been thrown out under act of god, Dorothy would have walked

oh god I can't believe I just said that

[–]saqwarrior 53 points54 points ago

She wouldn't have gotten far without the right shoes.

[–]roadbuzz 29 points30 points ago

It was at least theft.

[–]SunsFenix 20 points21 points ago

But the body disappeared and it would have to be the claim of a dead person for theft. Glenda gave Dorothy the shoes IIRC.

[–]roadbuzz 15 points16 points ago

We don't know if the evil witch had any living relatives, who would have inherited the shoes. But either way, I think it is still theft if you take form a dead person and her body was still existent when her shoes were taken. So Dorothy is at least guilty of handling stole goods.

Is there a law student, who can assess the situation?

[–]naranjaspencer 20 points21 points ago

Isn't the Wicked Witch of Whichever Direction the First One is Not From her sister?

[–]CrimsonAcid93 15 points16 points ago

WWot East (the one crushed by the house) is the WWot Wests' sister yes.

[–]luke2063 6 points7 points ago

Not in the original books - but in some adaptations, and in Wicked they were sisters.

[–]MicroDigitalAwaker 18 points19 points ago

Dude, we totally know she had a sister, one who even hurried over to claim the shoes but that "good" bitch had already looted the corpse and given the drops out. And that's why the Wicked Witch was after the naive gal from dirt land.

[–]callmelucky 4 points5 points ago

popcorn.gif

this is good shit.

[–]tha_ape 16 points17 points ago

The ones in the books are silver. They changed them to "ruby" to show off Technicolor

[–]DisapprovingSeal 4 points5 points ago

I heard that (the first book at least) was written as a political book, with the yellow brick road making fun of the gold standard and the silver shoes promoting the silver standard.

[–]AxelCaprio 5 points6 points ago

She'd be sent to a mental hospital as she stood in the court room clicking her shoes and crying. "Why won't they work?!"

[–]attorneyatlol 5 points6 points ago

She might've been liable in a civil suit.

[–]akatherder 4 points5 points ago

Ok, I've seen this movie a dozen times, but it's been a while. Doesn't a tornado pick up Dorothy's house and land it on the witch? I don't see how she could be liable for an act of God.

Although looting afterwards was pretty classless.

[–]kermi42 2 points3 points ago

While the risk of crushing someone while occupying a falling house is not an insignificant risk, there was no reasonable action Dorothy could have taken to prevent the occurrence, nor was she on notice said house would become airborne during extreme weather conditions.

[–]egonil 11 points12 points ago

I'd argue that it's vehicular manslaughter with a dash of hit and run. The house was clearly moving and the weather was terrible, Dorothy should have pulled over to the side of the tornado until things calmed down.

[–]RTukka 11 points12 points ago

Also, my memory is fuzzy, but Glenda doesn't charge Dorothy with killing the other witch, does she? So the group doesn't set out to kill again. Their goal is to reach the Wizard so they can sort out their various personal issues. The wicked witch gets in the way, so they take her out.

[–]redmeanshelp 10 points11 points ago

No, Glenda says that Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch of the East with the house. The WWWest wants to get Dorothy for killing her sister, hence all the drama.

Edit: Do you mean "charge" as in "instruct her to" or "accuse her of?"

[–]0j0s 8 points9 points ago

If we are nitipcking, the whole thing happens in Dorothy's sick mind, and so she is responsible for both deaths. (one she even blatantly tries to cover up as help)

[–]redmeanshelp 12 points13 points ago

It's a dream only in the movie.

[–]0j0s 8 points9 points ago

It's a movie only in your reality.

[–]Chuymatt 3 points4 points ago

She takes her aunt and uncle there to live is the books later on.

[–]animusvoxx 5 points6 points ago

bullshit, this was a case of attempted breaking and entering - the witch was clearly intending on getting in through the floorboards. If Dot's attorney was any good he'd get her off clean.

[–]ofcoursemyhorse 0 points1 point ago

kids films these days, really promoting the right stuff!

[–]uhhhclem 137 points138 points ago

Hmph. I know the guy who wrote the original version of that, and it wasn't "Inquirer Television Writer Lee Winfrey." It was Rick Polito, then of the Marin Independent Journal, whose capsule summaries of TV shows and movies was reason enough to read that paper.

[–]Maeby78 36 points37 points ago

That's his most famous synopsis, and has been floating around for quite a while with his name attached to it. How did this guy have the balls to put his name to it?

Unless he wrote an article about either Rick, movie summaries, or The Wizard Of Oz and ended with that, and that's all we see.

Kind of unlikely, but I'm feeling kinda glass half full.

[–]nanolucas 27 points28 points ago

Are there any examples of his other synopses online? I would quite like to see some more.

[–]jimmery 2 points3 points ago

me too.

[–]boobatron 7 points8 points ago

that guy that you know, he's hilarious.

[–]blastfemur 6 points7 points ago

My favorite so far is for Phase IV: "Ants buck food chain, try for humans." I've always wondered who wrote that one. Was it Ron?

[–]thecoolaccountant 87 points88 points ago

So just to clarify, we're supposed to be looking at the thing that is circled and highlighted?

[–]PartialMilkHotel 20 points21 points ago

You're not a very good accountant, are you?

[–]AxelCaprio 24 points25 points ago

No.. he's cool.

[–]MetalGearFlaccid 10 points11 points ago

It's a screenshot from the tonight show with Jay Leno doing headlines. I watched it Monday.

[–]BrotherSeamus 3 points4 points ago

Thanks for taking one for the team.

[–]terminal_velocity 185 points186 points ago

I disagree, I saw this one a few days ago... http://i.imgur.com/lX2wg.png

[–]TheOldeUltraViolence 78 points79 points ago

Well that's just not true at all. There is no empirical evidence of Mr. Wonka being on drugs (in the conventional sense). He may have a personality disorder or two, but he's a mad genius... it's to be expected.

Also, through their own avarice, the children were the cause of their own undoing.

[–]sprucenoose 19 points20 points ago

He also doesn't kill the children, at least not immediately. More likely they are disabled for life.

[–]nichiatu 32 points33 points ago

So: "A psycopathic mastermind is behind slow killings of kids in front of their own parents"?

[–]Shen4891 9 points10 points ago

So this is "Saw" with candy?

[–]GoSkers29 4 points5 points ago

I read this post in Gene Wilder's voice. It was that much better for it.

[–]SinisterRectus 0 points1 point ago

Chocolate contains psycoactive compounds.

[–]Elanthius 2 points3 points ago

Also, hardly any of them actually die. None at all according to the book at least.

[–]argv_minus_one 15 points16 points ago

Also, one gentleman is informed that he gets nothing, loses, and should have a good day.

[–]Username20x6 18 points19 points ago

Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker

[–]footballfan123 5 points6 points ago

Spoiler alert.

[–]b3242 20 points21 points ago

My personal favorite is the synopsis of Jaws played backwards, which went something like this: A shark vomits out people until they have to open a beach.

[–]nuclearblaster 14 points15 points ago

I too have watched Jay Leno

[–]LPodyssey07 8 points9 points ago

This is a good breakdown that sort of elaborates on this synopsis.

[–]zorospride 20 points21 points ago

I can't wait until Wicked gets a film adaptation.

[–]Jagrafess 5 points6 points ago

Disney had plans to make it into an animated film at one point... as a heterosexual male who didn't even like the play that much I would watch the shit out of that

[–]Zagorath 7 points8 points ago

There's been actual mention of plans to do this!? WICKED!

But it'll be based on the musical? That's a shame, a story twice removed from the original book seems…odd. But still, if it has Idina Menzel as Elphaba it can't be all that bad!

[–]eckliptic 0 points1 point ago

I see hte musical as a tightened up version of the book. Wicked the book really dragged in the middle

[–]pksquared 9 points10 points ago

For more, check out this 2010 AMC blog post about accurate but misleading synopses, which also gives a source for the Wizard of Oz synopsis.

My favorite is the synopsis of 2001: A Space Odyssey:

"A well-meaning computer's attempt to fulfill its mission runs afoul of a human crew with other plans."

[–]TheAtomicPlayboy 50 points51 points ago

[–]ElBoracho 80 points81 points ago

DOES SHE LOOK LIKE A WITCH?

[–]markedanthony 31 points32 points ago

TAP YOUR HEELS TOGETHER THREE TIMES MOTHEFUCKERRRRRRR

[–]xinzaku 7 points8 points ago

Check out the big brain on Scarecrow!

[–]SubtleRedditSatire 8 points9 points ago

Hey guys I've got a gif that mildly relates to the discussion!

[–]TheYe 9 points10 points ago

Just link it, don't tease us!

[–]shulz-nuggets 15 points16 points ago

that's pretty accurate.

[–]MeesterComputer 3 points4 points ago

Not at all. She doesn't "meet" the Wicked Witch of the East, and she's certainly doesn't kill her (she just happens to be in the house that lands on the witch as the result of a natural disaster).

Additionally, she doesn't team up "to kill again". First, the group teams up to go meet the wizard. When they team up again, it's to steal her broomstick. The actual death is an accident (but could be considered aggravated murder).

[–]StylingOnEwe 4 points5 points ago

"Pill-popping computer nerd befriends mysterious black man in plot to overthrow government. Donning shades and leather trench coats, this unlikely pair embark on a drug-induced rampage, taking out law enforcement agents along the way." - The Matrix

[–]Zugwat 3 points4 points ago

The good witch is actually the villan if you look at it.

[–]edtehgar 3 points4 points ago

This movie has a robot in it.

That's all i need to know.

[–]r_e_d_d_i_t 3 points4 points ago

Bitches be crazy.

[–]Ormstorm 3 points4 points ago

that shit cray

[–]deadpansnarker 12 points13 points ago

Seriously, how Dorothy isn't considered the villain is beyond me. She's a murderer and a thief

[–]revolverzanbolt 49 points50 points ago

She didn't control where her house landed, and she didn't choose to take the shoes. While she did kill the wicked witch of the west, that was after she was kidnapped and taken prisoner, and she didn't know that the water would kill the witch. At worst, she's guilty of manslaughter though.

Glinda, on the other hand, is completely guilty.

[–]tha_ape 20 points21 points ago

Yea that evil bitch not only knew how to get Dorothy home but she laughs about it in the end. She manipulated Dorothy to do her dirty work

[–]caseycoold 4 points5 points ago

Worse than that: she use to be Elphaba's best friend!

[–]smittysomething 5 points6 points ago

Imagine if I accidentally hit and killed you with my car, then got out and saw that you have a particularly trendy pair of shoes that I liked, took them from your still warm corpse, and then literally danced off down the road before the police arrived.

Innocent my ass. She should have gotten 5 years.

[–]revolverzanbolt 7 points8 points ago

The house was an freak accident, an "act of god" in insurance terms. She wouldn't be held liable, she wasn't driving the house.

Also, she didn't steal anything

[–]Moarality 10 points11 points ago

Because the authorities are really going to believe that they just magically appeared on her feet?

[–]MCL34N 2 points3 points ago

This implies Dorothy had control of the house. Had she not been there, wouldn't the house have still landed where it did?

[–]Camerongilly 3 points4 points ago

Isn't the whole book an allegory for the debate in the early 20th century about whether to leave the gold standard?

[–]Drasha1 8 points9 points ago

Maybe read wicked :P

[–]majortom1981 2 points3 points ago

I saw the play. It changes how you look at the movie. Makes the witch of the west a good guy and the wizard a bad guy.

[–]Frogman7 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget the dancing midgets!

[–]unmoralOp 2 points3 points ago

Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill her sister.

FTFY

[–]ThaMac 2 points3 points ago

On a side note, how does everyone feel about the upcoming Sam Raimi prequel to The Wizard of Oz? That's a pretty amazing cast that they put together.

[–]InternetCrank 2 points3 points ago

I think I prefer a synopsis of that god-awful film, Pearl Harbour that appeared in the papers here:

"The Japanese bomb a love triangle in the south Pacific".

[–]thatsgoodsoup 4 points5 points ago

Leave my childhood alone, assholes.

[–]TacitusKrekt 1 point2 points ago

This sums up politics to a T.

[–]its2012 0 points1 point ago

After reading it the first time, I thought they had just put it under the wrong movie.

[–]blavelle 1 point2 points ago

I'd love to see a wizard of oz trailer recut in this style.

[–]ans84 0 points1 point ago

8-10 pm? It's been a while but I'm pretty sure this movie is close to four hours.

[–]Selfbias 0 points1 point ago

They should have also mentioned it's best viewed while listening to Pink Floyd

[–]Johito 0 points1 point ago

"The film about the space hairdresser and the cowboy, he has a tinfoil pal and a wheelie bin, his dads a robot and he fucking fucked his sister and they all wear lego" the best synopsis of Star Wars i'v ever heard. Malcolm - the thick of it.

[–]no-game 0 points1 point ago

I fucking hated that movie when I was a kid.

[–]You_AWord 0 points1 point ago

r/movies

how do i make my response a link? ive been on reddit maybe four years now, haven't tried. thanks in advance, redditors.

[–]ParadoxN0W 0 points1 point ago

Not really accurate though, right? Dorothy doesn't gather allies to kill the Witch, she gathers them to see the titular Wizard of Oz. Duh.

[–]HilarityEnsuez 0 points1 point ago

Speaking of witch movies, I think it's time we watch this and this again. The second one is actually brilliant storytelling.
