[–]MindlessSpark 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry, did you just say domesticated jumping spiders?

[–]MintyDoom 1 point2 points ago

Yes, and hopefully enlarged to the size of a dog without it's body collapsing into itself, their really cute :3

[–]Maschalismos -2 points-1 points ago

This Naib knows our ways, Sietch-brothers! a DISTRANS bat shall be made available to you! All of the fremen shall listen to your messages!

[–]Mad_Max_Rockatansky 24 points25 points ago

Bats are cute. They are just scared mice with wings. We had so many in our office by the park. People were afraid for no reason. I learned to catch them alive in trash bags and let them go. They eat mosquitoes. Bats are helpful.

[–]F0XK1NG 8 points9 points ago

Seeing as this is a positive post about bats I wanted to bring this to everyone's attention.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_nose_syndrome

White Nose Syndrome is a disease that is wiping out bats in the North East and is spreading. I used to see hundreds of bats flying around on hot summer nights. This year I only saw 2 individual animals. I hope a cure and the cause can be discovered before it's too late.

[–]tmassey110 1 point2 points ago

That as well as the massively declining honey bee population. Both are very scary scenarios.

[–]elegylegacy 3 points4 points ago

People were afraid for no reason.

Rabies.

http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/bats/education/index.html

the most common source of human rabies in the United States is from bats. For example, among the 19 naturally acquired cases of rabies in humans in the United States from 1997-2006, 17 were associated with bats. Among these, 14 patients had known encounters with bats.

[–]moratnz 2 points3 points ago

Except that's a fruitbat, so it's more like a terrier with wings (and eats fruit...).

[–]Mad_Max_Rockatansky 1 point2 points ago

ok thanks

[–]papilio_glaucus 1 point2 points ago

You are awesome.

[–]Bmjslider 21 points22 points ago

Conflicting feelings.... what to do...

I've never wanted to find a bat adorable before... Something is wrong... Is this shopped..?

[–]Nisas 58 points59 points ago

Have you never seen this picture?

[–]Swampfyr 28 points29 points ago

Or this one? Bats are fucking awesome.

[–]KiXpiX 32 points33 points ago

looks like yellow pigs with fur.

Brushy Brushy!!! I love that photo. I dont know if i have ever seen it, but damn that is cute.

[–]tourm 3 points4 points ago

All bats are more or less tiny dogs with funny arms and legs.

[–]done_holding_back 2 points3 points ago

Bats ARE adorable. There's nothing creepy about them, but since they tend to live in dark spaces a lot of people are creeped out by them.

[–]nizo505 2 points3 points ago

Some bats look like little dogs with wings; they aren't all awful looking.

[–]drunkanddumbass 133 points134 points ago

I might get downvoted to oblivion but his eyes kinda say "please, don't squeeze me!" rather than "I'm cute and full of love"

[–]mMelatonin 54 points55 points ago

Pretty much all megabats look sad or pitiful in a painfully cute way regardless of their situation. Poor buggers.

[–]endlegion 36 points37 points ago

Megabat?! That gives me an idea for a new Caped Crusader graphic novel.....

To the man-cave!!!

You mean your parents' basement?

.... Yes....

[–]SpeedyVT 12 points13 points ago

[–]esoomenona 3 points4 points ago

Dafuq you say, crime?

[–]Levitlame 1 point2 points ago

Nothing says Mega Bat quite like... Whatever that is.

[–]madmax21st 0 points1 point ago

YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!

[–]ChaosChaser 2 points3 points ago

Don't fret lil' bat. Would you like some fruit? Or some crickets?

[–]mMelatonin 2 points3 points ago

Oh, yes, thank you. Fruit would be nice, cricket legs get stuck in my teeth.

[–]ChaosChaser 2 points3 points ago

You're very welcome! Have some fruit salad, sweetie.

[–]FortuitousExplosion 1 point2 points ago

aaaaaaaand rabies.

[–]Nisas 17 points18 points ago

Yeah, he looks like he's gonna crush it to death. He should be charged with battery.

[–]a_man_called_jeyne 25 points26 points ago

You want him to squeeze it and electrocute it? you monster.

[–]TeamKOOK 3 points4 points ago

Lennie over here, squeezing the poor guy a little too hard maybe

[–]hydrohamster 1 point2 points ago

that makes me want to squeeze him all the more... dawww

[–]Sirusavath 14 points15 points ago

I had a little bat crawling around my garage a couple months ago (don't think it was the same kind as this guy, since he was brown) and let me say watching them crawl is rather creepy and they make quite a horrible noise when they're startled. But using a shovel I got him out of there and I didn't even scream, because I can be manly sometimes. Honestly I'm not terrified of bats or anything I'm just not too keen on getting a rabies shot.

[–]kellaorion 5 points6 points ago

You don't even have to get them in the stomach anymore.

[–]Sirusavath 2 points3 points ago

Really? Is it still a huge needle though?

[–]offwiththepants 4 points5 points ago

yes.... it's an intramuscular injection, so the needle will be about as big as any other intramuscular injection needles (like tetanus vaccinations)

[–]Sirusavath 4 points5 points ago

The last tetanus shot I got wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Hearing that it's like that and it won't go in my stomach makes me feel a lot better about the prospect of getting rabies.

[–]hgiq 2 points3 points ago

My brother was compaining for ages when he got a tetanus shot. This terrified me when I turned 12 and got the shot on my birthday. I didn't feel aaaaanything. My brother was not impressed.

[–]GypsyCrab 1 point2 points ago

and it's MORE than one, a lot more!

[–]offwiththepants 7 points8 points ago

iirc, it's just three shots over the span of a few weeks.

edit: sounds like it's five

[–]breakneckridge 4 points5 points ago

Well, it is more than one, but it's not many more. You're probably thinking of the old version which required 30 shots. That's no longer true. Today's version only requires 5 shots, as the other commentor said.

[–]GypsyCrab 0 points1 point ago

yes, scary stuff that old kind was!

[–]Mad_Max_Rockatansky 1 point2 points ago

An IM injection is the easiest injection to get. At worst you'll get a charley horse to rub out. It is so much less than a bee sting.

[–]kellaorion 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. You can check here for more info. Http://www.vaccines.gov/diseases/rabies/index.html/

[–]enlightening 1 point2 points ago

No, I went through the series a few years ago. First shot is at the wound site. Unfortunately mine was in the shin. And it was a huge shot. Damn!

[–]tourm 2 points3 points ago

Had mine last year (coincidently so that I could handle bats!).

It's a small shoulder shot once a week for 3 weeks. Side effects were that shoulder acheing a bit for a few days.

[–]wha7thmah 0 points1 point ago

Oooh!! Maybe it was Myotis lucifugus? Not the cutest bat, but definitely not the ugliest.

[–]EatMyNutella 13 points14 points ago

Not to be mistaken with "phat beats."

[–]I_am_a_white_guy_AMA 44 points45 points ago

Am I the only one here that is slightly terrified of those lil claws??

[–]jok5tr 30 points31 points ago

You and me both buddy. Rabies is like the Wu-tang Clan...it ain't nothing to fuck with.

[–]IsItReallyRequired 16 points17 points ago

In the UK we don't have rabies. smug face

[–]unclebeard 2 points3 points ago

Elaborate?

[–]IsItReallyRequired 11 points12 points ago

No rabies on the island hence the extreme quarantine animals have to go through (6 months in kennels before they're allowed in)

We do have isolated cases but they are extremely rare.

Edit: when there is even the smallest single rabies case it makes national news and people are warned of any signs so any inflection can be stopped from spreading.

[–]Rowdy10 19 points20 points ago

I saw 28 days later. Y'all got yours too

[–]IsItReallyRequired 4 points5 points ago

Whenever I read "Y'all" I assume you have a cowboy hat on. True story.

[–]Not_Your_Ham 2 points3 points ago

[–]Rowdy10 2 points3 points ago

Psh that's stupid. Excuse me though I gotta go ride my horse to work.

[–]neogod 3 points4 points ago

TIL

[–]agirlonthewing 1 point2 points ago

There's no quarantine any more from most countries as long as they've had rabies vaccs.

[–]unclebeard 1 point2 points ago

Holy crap. I had no idea. Makes me want to watch 28 Weeks Later now.

[–]lawesipan 2 points3 points ago

Through strict border controls and eliminating the disease where it exists the United Kingdom has no rabid animals etc. It does help that we're an island.

[–]nizo505 8 points9 points ago

Just wait until the horde of rabid chunnel rats finally get there.

[–]unclebeard 1 point2 points ago

Ah hah. Gotcha. I wasn't sure if it was like how Hawaii has no snakes, rabies was just never in the UK, or if they wiped it out there.

[–]Gangstasaurus_Rex 0 points1 point ago

But you still have EBLV.

[–]SlinkoSnake 1 point2 points ago

I'm imagining you lifting a cup of tea as you say that.

[–]IsItReallyRequired 1 point2 points ago

Actually I am! Although its a mug of tea and I slurp it. Tea, it one of those stereo types that is true. Americans always laugh when they visit our London office at all an entire counter full of different types of teas but the only coffee is crappy freeze dried stuff in the corner in a jar.

Also had a meat pie, mash & gravy for lunch today.

/cliche

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

Your lunch sounds wonderful. Gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme

[–]IsItReallyRequired 1 point2 points ago

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh my lanta! My taste buds are weeping with delight!

[–]moratnz 1 point2 points ago

Eating a pie with a spoon? My, aren't we la-de-da?

[–]IsItReallyRequired 1 point2 points ago

Wooden fork you!

[–]tau-lepton 7 points8 points ago

Oddly, although many bats have antibodies for rabies, far fewer actually carry the disease.

http://www.jwildlifedis.org/content/25/4/490.short

[–]ZEB1138 1 point2 points ago

Rabies is not much of a threat to anyone in the First World. Sure, you don't want to contract it and you should try to avoid it, but it's not a big deal if you get bitten. RabAvert is readily available in pretty much any ED and it takes the human body months to contract rabies after a bite. That's why you can get vaccinated after you're bitten and still not contract it.

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

Makes too much sense.

[–]SHITKEEPSFALLING 3 points4 points ago

It's almost like he has spiders for feet D:

[–]Mad_Max_Rockatansky 2 points3 points ago

Those claws are kinder than a domestic cat.

[–]LHB2010 2 points3 points ago

Absolutely not.. This creature looks like a hellspawn to me!

[–]TangentGrey 10 points11 points ago

A bat outta hell?

[–]tuesdayswithMrAaron 4 points5 points ago

Well, he would do anything for love...

[–]lightfragments 7 points8 points ago

So beautiful

[–]HarjiFangki 6 points7 points ago

Aww... It is as cute as death.

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 6 points7 points ago

And he will grow to be my friend and perform tasks for me.

[–]ChaosChaser -1 points0 points ago

Can't decide: Flying puppy, or flying monkey?

[–]viralkat 3 points4 points ago

I want to give it a smooch, but that's probably not a good idea.

[–]rhokad 3 points4 points ago

i bet it puts its sniffy nose in your ear all moist and wet sniffing for goodies

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 1 point2 points ago

My dogs do that..

[–]burningicaruswings 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I mean Batty has a cute face but the "feet" look like they're going to claw my soul.

[–]Abbacoverband 1 point2 points ago

Agreed. Lots of bats are fucking adorable, but their feet are decidedly NOT. And when they move, they look like the girl from The Grudge. Or maybe the Ring.

[–]vynusmagnus 3 points4 points ago

It's incredible how much his snout resembles that of a dog.

[–]dressiertugboat 3 points4 points ago

Stellaluna!

[–]darkwavechick 1 point2 points ago

I still have that book!

[–]builder17 0 points1 point ago

I haven't logged into Reddit for a long, long time so this is important. I used to work for and sell rabies vaccine so I know a bit about the disease. I'm not sure where you are from but you need to seek help. http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/exposure/animals/bats.html

This is what you need to do. 1- If you still have the bat, keep it. The health department will need it to determine if it is rabid. 2 - Go to your local ER, with the bat, and tell them what happened. I would insist on getting the rabies series if it is determined that the bat is the type that carries rabies. Bat teeth are very small and bites are hard to see or feel.

There is only one known survivor of rabies and I met her. She has severe neurological problems.

The disease is still considered 100% fatal. There is NO proven treatment for rabies once it has gone past a certain stage. Once the symptoms show it is too late to do anything.

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is not my picture. I don't have a bat. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet.

[–]builder17 -1 points0 points ago

Better to give unneeded info than stand by and say nothing. I'm happy you did not handle a bat. It would result in 5 or 6 painful and expensive injections.

[–]zenfaust 1 point2 points ago

..but don't most people who live anywhere other than some crappy third-world country have vaccinations to prevent rabies in the first place?

[–]builder17 0 points1 point ago

55,000 people die each year from rabies. Mostly in Asia and Africa. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs099/en/

[–]NickFlannel 5 points6 points ago

It's so cute!!!

[–]Asrichards 6 points7 points ago

you might consider getting rabies shots now. I worked at a pet store that took in a bat some idiot brought in because he thought it was in need of care. A coworker who handled it got a miniscule bite on her finger and had to get a round of rabies shots. Better safe than end up foaming at the mouth.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 2 points3 points ago

Dawwww. It looks like a rat, cross a dog, cross a claws.

[–]says_things_will_die 2 points3 points ago

Someday this bat will die.

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

D: you monster! He can hear you...

[–]says_things_will_die 2 points3 points ago

:`(

[–]Marzto 2 points3 points ago

Plot twist: Ozzy is holding the bat.

[–]roxyroxs 2 points3 points ago

Yes, little guy, you sure can give me all the rabies you want. Worth it!

[–]theuselessavenger 2 points3 points ago

I've always wanted a fruit bat as a pet. I like to think it would be like a flying dog.

[–]GoLightLady 2 points3 points ago

Dang it, I'm trying to be afraid of the little guy. Ok, he's freakin cute. Cute cute cute.

[–]redlion81 2 points3 points ago

If I had one, it would be called Adam West.

[–]Xdivine 6 points7 points ago

Human, what are you doing? Human, if you squeeze me any harder I'll end up on /r/WTF. HUMAN, STAHP!

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

Good..

[–]hivemind6 2 points3 points ago

The title makes me want to vomit blood.

[–]MackDeeZee[S] 0 points1 point ago

Good or bad?

[–]kittie0314 3 points4 points ago

I want one!

[–]cccrazy 3 points4 points ago

As an Australian, I understand that bats (especially flying foxes) are ecologically important, but their colonies are fucking disgusting. If hell had a sound and a smell, it would be a bat colony. They also spread fatal diseases. I fucking hate bats.

[–]tau-lepton 9 points10 points ago

You could replace bats with humans in that sentence (well, except for the ecologically important bit)

[–]cccrazy 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I fully agree.

[–]Diggity_Dave 0 points1 point ago

I AM BABCOCK AND I AM FOREVER.

[–]SkatBoodig -1 points0 points ago

[–]Mechatronical 1 point2 points ago

Them bat eyes! Gaaaaaaah im squealing and tingling inside!

[–]Munkeynz 1 point2 points ago

I love bats. (Which truthfully I typed accidentally as vags before it autocorrected)...

But seriously bats are underrated. They are super cute and I wish I could get a pet one.

[–]FormaSanko 1 point2 points ago

Whoe :D

[–]napsupuuro 1 point2 points ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer-headed_bat This one looks like a sheep, it disturps me :/ (also the fact that it might be the carrier of ebola virus)

[–]MsLadysmith 1 point2 points ago

They're like puppies, they grow into them.

[–]reddog323 1 point2 points ago

[–]bumlifeyo -1 points0 points ago

But...rabies?

[–]Ashcrexl 1 point2 points ago

Bats are X-men's Beast?!

[–]letseatpaste 1 point2 points ago

Them bats is smart.

[–]BoxOfDemons 1 point2 points ago

I own a cave that used to be a show cave about 50 years ago. It's full of cute bats that are about the size of your thumb. I wouldn't dare grab one though.

[–]raoul_llamas_duke 1 point2 points ago

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

[–]BitchGoddess 1 point2 points ago

I love bats! This one just knocked me out with the adorable!!!

[–]urmombaconsmynarwhal -1 points0 points ago

wtf is the :3 face supposed to look like

[–]HotterThanThis 1 point2 points ago

I posted this to my FB a couple of weeks ago. It is about the cutest thing in the world.

[–]ywkwpwnw 1 point2 points ago

I read fat beats.

[–]Mrpotatoeface 1 point2 points ago

[–]schwoopsies -1 points0 points ago

Just, nope

[–]floydbc05 1 point2 points ago

Cute in a very evil way.

[–]monobomb 1 point2 points ago

I think that is fucking terrifying

[–]Killzonintaing 1 point2 points ago

So... my computer is a bit laggy, and it loads about half the picture first. flashback Me: "aww!" Pic finishes loading D:

[–]bwalshy 1 point2 points ago

At a nature show I had a fruit bat hang on my arm and eat fruit from my other hand. It bit a little bit, but just in a light playfully way. It was awesome, but you how heavy there are! It's hard to think about them flying after you feel that weight.

[–]Cleptobot 1 point2 points ago

Potentially the creepiest little feet I've ever seen, coupled with a gutwrenchingly cute face - and I'm really confused with what to think...

[–]AgentBoJangles -1 points0 points ago

If you could just squeeze really tight, yeah that would be greeeaaatt.

[–]Daniel_The_Thinker -1 points0 points ago

OH GOD NOPE
