Buddhism? I appreciate some parts of Buddhism, like a couple of the Four Noble Truths. One of my favourite philosophers (Arthur Schopenhauer) has a pretty great respect for it.

The Four Noble Truths, at least in mine (and Schopenhauer's) interpretation, can help explain exactly why life is so terrible. The problem is that Buddhism hits the problem right on the head:

Human beings are subject to desires and cravings, but even when we are able to satisfy these desires, the satisfaction is only temporary. Pleasure does not last; or if it does, it becomes monotonous.

Even when we are not suffering from outward causes like illness or bereavement, we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied. This is the truth of suffering.

Some people who encounter this teaching may find it pessimistic. Buddhists find it neither optimistic nor pessimistic, but realistic.

But I don't agree so strongly with:

Fortunately the Buddha's teachings do not end with suffering; rather, they go on to tell us what we can do about it and how to end it.

I guess I wouldn't know for sure unless I practiced it. It'd be interesting to try it, I suppose. Maybe I'll look into it more sometime.

To me this seems like a non-sequitur. What does the fact that a different set of atoms constitutes my body now compared to 10 years ago have on the meaningfulness of my being, sub specie aeternitas?

You should go through my post history because I've written about this extensively.

While that may be a good idea, I'm going to be honest and admit that I'm too lazy to trawl through a user's history to search for comments that may be half-relevant to what we're discussing. I'm working on a simple tetris implementation this evening; it's more fun. But feel free to post a concise argument of why I'm anything more than what I describe myself as - I'll read that.

Okay, lets start a dialog. First, how do you know you have a body in the first place? Second, if your consciousness was downloaded into a machine would it still be you? Third, Why is what you are limited to your body (why isn't your PC a part of you?)? Are your memories not a part of who you are?

To speak to your role in the universe, I would say that it is simply to act. Without you in the exact same action you are performing right now, this universe could not exist.

Don't listen to the sad sacks replying to you. I live an amazing, full, wonderful life and I'm 31. My commute consists of taking my kid to school and coming home and going to my office. I have lunch with my family every day, have hobbies and friends and an amazing family.

There is so much joy in life that if you're missing it then you must be actively trying to avoid it. There are great books available freely in every community. Beautiful parks. Fulfilling hobbies. Delicious food. If you can't find it then you're walking around with your eyes closed.

Again, you're missing the beauty and joy. The leaves this time of year are amazing. There's tons of great restaurants and bars in Lancaster. People are friendly and helpful, and I have a ton of friends. I'm sorry that you didn't get to experience that.

I admit that my job is an exception. But even my office jobs were fun.
