I took a chemistry of AIDS class in school and was blown away to find out that the transmission rate to get HIV from having unprotected sex with an AIDS positive person was around .1%.

That said, there are around 34 Million people living with AIDS/HIV as of 2010 so if that was the case, then you would in fact contract HIV 34,000 times.

I don't remember the medical resource I originally read, but here are the values from the wikipedia page (clearly the highest authority on these kind of things):

Blood Transfusion 90%

Childbirth (to child) 25%

Needle-sharing injection drug use 0.67%

Percutaneous needle stick 0.30%

Receptive anal intercourse* 0.04–3.0%

Insertive anal intercourse* 0.03%

Receptive penile-vaginal intercourse* 0.05–0.30%

Insertive penile-vaginal intercourse* 0.01–0.38%

Receptive oral intercourse*§ 0–0.04%

Insertive oral intercourse*§ 0–0.005%

The huge amounts of infected are a result of the pandemic level that exists in certain parts of the world with terrible health standards.

It blows me away that it is so heavily associated with sex, and that students are mislead to believe a single encounter will result in infection (This is what I was taught in a private secular school's sex education program). Perhaps it is due to the fact that our society has almost entirely resolved the highest probability route of infection (transfusion), but teaching that 1 contact will result in 1 infection is simply untrue.

I am all for caution, but scare tactics are utter horse shit.

That is a 1 in 300 chance of contracting HIV. You have almost 10 times betting on a single number in roulette. Also I am not sure if you are aware of this, but based on your comment I feel the need to write this out for you: you do not dies the second after you contract HIV. As a matter of fact there have been so many advancements in the field of HIV/AIDS treatment that it is not uncommon to prevent someone with HIV from ever progressing to AIDS, and every year we come closer to a cure (especially this last year).

But by all means reddit, give some upvotes to the virgin who doesn't understand statistics and defends intimidation based sex education.
