I think the main reason the backwards thing began was because of actual emoticons being used instead. If I'm using Facebook, I prefer the backwards smiley to the foolish emoticon. I think it's strange when people still make them backwards in things like text messages. The worst offense I've seen was a girl who DREW them backwards.

I wanted something to distinguish myself, so I used the upside-down smiley emoticon. I continued using it on BBSes. By the time I first got on the web in 1995, it was a long-ingrained habit.

People on IRC in the early 90s used (-: to show that they're left-handed. I remember a USENET post by one of the early wizards of the Internet being the "official" list of emoticons. The left-handed (-: was included in it. I tried to dig it up but didn't have any luck; maybe someone else will remember it and have more luck.
