E=MC2 because it's the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

[–]YouFeelShame 18 points19 points ago

Are you telling me that this sucker is nuclear?

[–]nothing_clever 30 points31 points ago

No, no, no, no, no, this sucker's electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity I need.

[–]bvanman 2 points3 points ago

[–]MadLintElf 5 points6 points ago

Yes indeed, first Nuclear aircraft carrier in the US fleet.

Keep in mind, it only has a nuclear reactor, not actual nuclear bombs, but it's still impressive (never runs out of fuel).

[–]smallblacksun 10 points11 points ago

never runs out of fuel

The Enterprise was refueled 4 times.

[–]ikantspeell 2 points3 points ago

I was going to say...I've seen carriers refueled in person.

[–]Carbon_Blob 3 points4 points ago

The Enterprise was built with 8 reactors. And carriers are often refueled once during their useful lifetime.

[–]valarmorghulis 8 points9 points ago

That's for Nimitz class carriers. The Enterprise refueled more frequently. Interestingly, the USS Enterprise is the fastest ship in the US Navy (not can reach the highest speed, but can get from A to B the fastest). This is mainly because being the first nuclear carrier they weren't sure what it'd require to power it. They over-shot the mark significantly with 8 reactors. Nimitz class ships have half that number (granted they are generations more recent designs), and cannot sustain the speeds that the Enterprise can. This is also the reason the Big E is the only ship in her class.

This is info I've gotten from a co-worker who was a nuke-tech on the Nimitz.

[–]phullolock 5 points6 points ago

Well technically it does, but it'll rust before that actually happens.

[–]MadLintElf 4 points5 points ago

Yes it does, just like a nuclear sub can stay underwater for an indefinite amount of time (until they run out of food).

Take care.

[–]stamatt45 3 points4 points ago

Wouldn't air or water be a problem before food?

[–]lukefwjross 12 points13 points ago

Use electricity to separate the Oxygen and Hydrogen in the water, bam air.

[–]molson8dry 0 points1 point ago

actually they carry nukes as well

[–]WiseCynic 1 point2 points ago

Those are sailors in their dress whites standing in formation - not a paint job, folks!

[–]blumpknz 17 points18 points ago

I was deployed on the enterprise for 6 months. We were at see on its 50 birthday and they took the exact same picture with all of us in our dress whites. Pretty cool to be a part of history like that. Its pulling back into Virginia shortly and this was supposedly the last deployment for it.

[–]Killfile 6 points7 points ago

It blows my mind that we live at a point in history where it's not completely insane to retire a nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

They still kinda feel like science fiction to me but so did the SR-71.

[–]vinnievon 5 points6 points ago

The sad thing is they have to strip down the Enterprise so much to retire it that the rest will be scrapped. It would have been nice to see her turned into a museum.

[–]Mangonesailor 2 points3 points ago

I heard that it was a plan that was up in the air to turn it into another NNPTU and dock it somewhere. Guess that'll never happen.

[–]vinnievon 4 points5 points ago

My grandfather was Air Boss on her during Vietnam I believe. They had just finished the USS Reagan and we swung by Norfolk to check them out. The coolest thing was they had both ships next to each other.

I've never thought a carrier could seem small until you looked at "first" and "latest" side by side. Awesome thing to witness.

[–]Keranth 3 points4 points ago

I didn't hear about a 50th year picture, and I didn't see anything about it at a quick googling. I was part of the 40th year pic, though.

Yeah, the Big E decoms in 2013, this is its last deployment.

[–]raskolnikov- 8 points9 points ago

The large, funny looking ship next to the Enterprise is the nuclear powered cruiser Long Beach, which is also a pretty interesting ship. The gigantic bridge houses experimental radar systems that led to the development of the Aegis system, I think. The third ship is the Bainbridge, which is also nuclear powered, although modern cruisers and destroyers are not.

[–]tarzan322 4 points5 points ago

You are correct sir. That is the USS Long Beach and the USS Bainbridge. All three were experimental and nuclear at the time.

[–]perdidoentx 2 points3 points ago

I was on the Bainbridge in the 80s. There were several more of the nuclear powered cruisers that came afterwards, up to the Mississippi, CGN-41. Turns out that gas turbines are more efficient for smaller ships, and they were all decommissioned in the 90s.

[–]Mangonesailor 2 points3 points ago

That's a shame. In NNPTC all the cruiser guys said they'd rather serve on another cruiser than a sub or carrier.

[–]Shadow703793 0 points1 point ago

Turns out that gas turbines are more efficient for smaller ships, and they were all decommissioned in the 90s.

In what sense? Cost?

[–]linearcore 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit. That's the Long Beach? My dad is always talking about being stationed on that ship.

Fuck me, that's weird.

[–]iLikeMen69 6 points7 points ago

This is the galaxy class, yes?

[–]vinnievon 5 points6 points ago

[–]Keranth 2 points3 points ago

1701-C I think =)

[–]MaximusTheDog 7 points8 points ago

I see an upvote in the back of the carrier.

[–]hZf 6 points7 points ago

UpBoat

[–]feor1300 3 points4 points ago

Looks like Phantoms and Crusaders at the bow, with Sabers aft, but I can't tell what the big planes at the very stern are. Anyone know?

[–]In_a_Bookshop 2 points3 points ago

http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/1109/04010914.jpg

This is from another angle. Groovemonkey is correct, those are A-5s Vigilantes. Also, the smaller aircraft to the rear are A-4 skyhawks, not Sabers.

[–]feor1300 1 point2 points ago

ok, cool. hard to tell from the distance of the shot. Thanksto you and Groovemonkey.

[–]In_a_Bookshop 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, the op's pic doesn't make it very clear.

[–]groovemonkeyzero 2 points3 points ago

Looks like the A-5? Didn't know either, had to search it.

[–]rr777 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if this carrier will ever be retired. Not that I want it to, just wondering.

[–]turlian 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, it's interesting that it's the only one of its class. The other 10 US carriers are all Nimitz class.

[–]Flying_Engineer 2 points3 points ago

Funny you should ask... apparently it's right around the corner.

My father was on the USS Enterprise and is attending the decommissioning. It is at the end of November. He was able to secure a spot to walk through the ship with my mom. This will be her first time seeing where he spent his time in the service.

[–]tattedspyder 1 point2 points ago

Supposed to be decommissioned when the Ford is launched.

[–]SamTheGeek 2 points3 points ago

Sooner - it'll be decommissioned early next year, after it concludes the current tour of duty. It'll then be scrapped.

[–]spacedropper 0 points1 point ago

It's on it's last deployment now. It should be pulling into Norfolk for Decom pretty soon.

[–]The_Maddog 1 point2 points ago

[–]Keranth 1 point2 points ago

I was stationed on the Enterprise during its 40th year in service. We did another photo E=MC2 x 40. I was on watch, but if I recall I think my division (Reactor Electrical) was in the "x".

[–]An-Angel-Named-Billy 1 point2 points ago

Wonder when they will commission the Enterprise-B

[–]imcarljamesbitch 0 points1 point ago

That's fucking smart.

[–]wanttoseemycat 1 point2 points ago

My father served as a nuke engineer on this little boat. He says he seems to remember it was several years later that they took this picture, on one of it's early deployments, but by no means it's launch.

[–]dragonmoony 0 points1 point ago

E=MC2 < this is wrong (incomplete)

[–]ThereReallyIsNoHope 0 points1 point ago

That one seaman on the top-right corner of the "c" near the raised 2 is a bastard and is fucking with my OCD.

[–]da6alex 0 points1 point ago

Im glad it wasn't a cross

[–]zxcvbnmcomma 0 points1 point ago

Relatively cool

[–]govtofficial 2 points3 points ago

This picture was actually taken during Operation Sea Orbit in 1964, three years after she was commissioned in 1961. It was a show of force for the Cold War as we circumnavigated the globe without stopping/refueling.

The Enterprise is being inactivated on December 1 of this year. from this site:

Inactivation is a process that lays up a ship for long-term storage in the event of mobilization or for safe storage pending disposal. Enterprise will remain in an inactive status until all fuel has been removed. A portion of the crew will remain onboard to oversee this process and to remain with the ship until her official decommissioning date.

[–]jun815 1 point2 points ago

My dad was a purple jersey (aviation fuels) on the big "E" when I was a kid . I got to go on the ship on a Tiger Cruise from Seattle to Alameda at the tail end of one of the deployments. Needless to say, it was one of the coolest things I ever got to do with my dad. Being 100 feet away from an F-14 launched off the cats was awesome.

[–]Predditor_86 0 points1 point ago

Is it odd that I noticed the upvote at the stern before I noticed the equation?

[–]Derobosmi 0 points1 point ago

The should have wrapped it I brown paper and tied a rope around it.

[–]lightninghand 0 points1 point ago

Disappointed that it had nothing to do with Jean-Luc Picard.

[–]tacoridingcowboy 1 point2 points ago

This isn't at the launching, but the actual story is even cooler (I think). This is the first fully nuclear Task Force, comprising the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, a nuclear cruiser, and a nuclear destroyer on the first un-refueled cruise around the world. Pretty fancy

[–]vamosj 1 point2 points ago

You are correct in that it was the first all nuclear strike group. This picture of "Task Force One" was taking 31 July 1964. They completed the round world journey in 65 days without any replenishments at sea. Just to show the world they can go anywhere without stopping. Oh, another thing you are correct on is that the Enterprise was launched earlier than this pic. It was launched in 1960 and commissioned in 1961.

USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) USS Long Beach (CGN-9) Bainbridge (DLGN-25)

[–]toddsmash 0 points1 point ago

Excuse me, but the USS Enterprise is round at the front!

[–]djbeks 0 points1 point ago

looks like giant lines of coke

[–]TransparentCat -2 points-1 points ago

All I see is that white upvote.

[–]theflava 0 points1 point ago

I bet Einstein would've hated this.

[–]ryumast3r 1 point2 points ago

I think Einstein would've actually preferred this relatively peaceful use of nuclear energy to the destructive use that is the nuclear bomb. In general, I think that he wouldn't be extremely pleased about it. Indeed, I think that, while being a pacifist he was also extremely realistic about war and its inevitability and would have thought that this is a relatively good way of using an otherwise devastating technology.

I do agree however that he'd rather see purely peaceful uses for the technology.

[–]Vee_Vee -5 points-4 points ago

gay

[–]turtletree69 0 points1 point ago

There's an upvote on the back end of the carrier

[–]vamosj -2 points-1 points ago
