I recall watching this scene on Planet Earth (I believe), and what the narrator explained was happening was basically what you think is happening. The second buffalo is sending the one being chased to its death. In doing so it allows the remaining herd to carry on without worrying about the pack harassing them, at least for a few hours/days.

*After finding and re-watching the actual clip with sound, it seems I was mistaken, the narrator believes that in the chaos of the moment, the bison didn't really know what it was doing and the young calf was just a casualty of war. I felt I was cheating reddit with all of these upvotes, please accept my sincerest apologies.

    It seems more likely they said that to add to the narrative, and in reality the herd was in a panic and when the big guy got that close to the wolves just freaked out more and trampled the young guy.

    Interesting, I don't know much about a buffalo's natural instinct to raise or lower it's head. In a moment of pure adrenaline maybe he just put his head down to move whatever was in his way, out of the way. It's not that your premise is less likely, because it seems believable. It's just that I have a hard time seeing a creature such as the buffalo make a premeditated decision to forfeit another buffalo by knocking him down in front of wolves, if anything, he put himself in more danger by entering the pack. It all just looks like panic to me.

    I'm more inclined to believe that the larger buffalo was merely in a panicky rampage and would have done what he did to anything that got in his way. I, for whatever reason, had convinced myself that the narrator explained it as I had in my original comment, but upon finding and watching the clip again, he definitely does not, so I edited my original comment.

    I watched this episode, I don't recall the narrator saying that? Additionally, buffalo are herd animals and not very bright, I'm fairly certain buffalo don't run logical processes so advanced that they think, "well, I better take that guy out but leave him wounded so the wolves are drawn to him, then we can all run away in the opposite direction." That's very advanced thought for a big, wild cow which typically have a thought process solely of "eat, run, mate."

    In all likelihood the buffalo were running away and like all cattle, they just freak out and do crazy shit when startled. The one in the back happened to be lined up with that poor guy and the wolves, he put his head down to hit the wolves but hit the other buffalo and just kept running away, not one part of it preplanned (christ am I really having to argue against buffalo having advanced planning, tactical strategy and a concept of their own mortality? These aren't apes or fucking velociraptors!)

          i was just thinking, why doesn't reddit have an automatic image search for when you post anything with an image that reverse searches the same subreddit for the same image... and if it's a ~95-100% match to a previous post within X months (or forever?) it's automatically spam filtered.

          wouldn't that ensure OC? the only problem i see with this is the chance of accidentally filtering out a small number of OC, but if it's spam filtered, mods can approve it at request if it's checked for OC manually...

          Intelligent people post content of their own which they directly financially benefit from onto reddit, and if it gets popular from a repost, then they win either way.

          I.E. Upvotes don't really matter at all.
