Barred Owl. I just started a subreddit called r/trailcam yesterday . Could you post this there too?

[–]OmegaGlory[S] 51 points52 points ago

Absolutely.

[–]ChrisVolkoff 29 points30 points ago

[–]Terra99 20 points21 points ago

Learned something new today. Always thought it was Bard Owl.

[–]neuromonkey 19 points20 points ago

I always thought it was a barn owl.

[–]is45toooldforreddit 30 points31 points ago

Barn Owl is a thing, but that is not a Barn Owl.

It's not a great pic, but it certainly looks like a Barred Owl.

Edit: changed barn owl link

[–]neuromonkey 81 points82 points ago

Oh. So... probably also totally different than a tard owl.

[–]ArgonGryphon 15 points16 points ago

That is some terrible taxidermy.

(Also, it's a Northern Hawk Owl. If anyone was curious)

[–]neuromonkey 1 point2 points ago

I was.

[–]clown_answer 0 points1 point ago

Or hard bowel

[–]ThatOtherGai 0 points1 point ago

I just made these worst(best?) shrill/laugh/noise after clicking that.

[–]Valiturus 2 points3 points ago

That barn owl link doesn't work.

EDIT: ty for fixing it. good choice to represent barn owls. Love the talons.

[–]is45toooldforreddit 2 points3 points ago

Hmm, it worked for me. Anyway, I edited it to a different pic.

[–]Wilcows 0 points1 point ago

I like the barn owl more.

[–]is45toooldforreddit 0 points1 point ago

I like barn owls too. Have you read Wesley the Owl? I highly recommend it :-)

[–]llcbdavis -1 points0 points ago

so will this thing eat a cat? i thought they swallow their food whole.

[–]Zeldagon 1 point2 points ago

I believe barred is a cross/hybrid between a barn and spotted owl.

[–]muchachomalo 2 points3 points ago

You obviously haven't been on Reddit long. You are supposed to just repost it and say it is yours.

[–]dirtymoney 11 points12 points ago

someone should start a subreddit called "cats_giving_a_fuck" for pics like the OP's

[–]YouthsIndiscretion 0 points1 point ago

Been waiting for a sub like this.

[–]UnDire 0 points1 point ago

A couple months ago one of these was sitting on a car in our neighborhood. Living near the woods is A1.

[–]SgtFury 57 points58 points ago

The owl is just being polite. "SIR, I FOUND YOUR CAT!"

[–]7Dayss 16 points17 points ago

He rescues the cat to take pictures and post them on reddit.

[–]auroraborememalice 60 points61 points ago

A pair of bald eagles nest behind my house. They are huge. One tried to take our old black cat which was walking across the field. She went up on her hind legs and fought it off!

[–]PoniesRBitchin 33 points34 points ago

And then smoked a cigar?

[–]wintercast 3 points4 points ago

I would let my indoor cat out into the back yard while i walked around with it. The cat went back to the back door and wanted in the house. The cat was proably at the door for about 1 minute before i walked over and let it in. I stayed outside to finish some gardening. I walked away from the back door, so my back was facing it. When i heard a loud bang (door was metal).

I looked and saw a red tail hawk had landed right at the door. It seemed a little stunned, then got up and flew away.

No clue if it thought it was going to get the cat or something else.

[–]ArgonGryphon 9 points10 points ago

I doubt they wanted to eat her, though I don't doubt they would have if they killed her. Bald Eagles are lazy fuckers, just as likely, if not moreso, to eat carrion or steal food from other birds (Osprey are common victims of this)

They probably just wanted her out of their territory.

[–]Mike_Facking_Jones 15 points16 points ago

The perfect symbol for a nation that also is lazy and doesn't care what it eats.

[–]ArgonGryphon 4 points5 points ago

Pretty much. Good thing Ben Franklin didn't get his way with the Turkey, or else it wouldn't match us so well now.

They are beautiful birds though.

[–]Zarfi 0 points1 point ago

On the plus side we wouldn't have to eat that boring bird on thanksgiving, everyone seems to love it though, don't get it.

[–]auroraborememalice 0 points1 point ago

I don't know much about eagles, but we have watched this pair hunt. They take the live Canada Geese from the neighbours' place in season.

[–]Modus_Pwninz 0 points1 point ago

Old timey boxing!

[–]shofet 35 points36 points ago

We have a couple of barred owls in my neighborhood. We don't let the chihuahua out at night after the neighbors pekingese went missing.

[–]fuzzybuzzer 178 points179 points ago

do urself a favor and let the chihuahua out so you can replace it with a real dog.

[–]harmala 101 points102 points ago

Torn between the humor and the unforgivable use of text-speak instead of spelling out "yourself".

[–]PoniesRBitchin 5 points6 points ago

Most of the shitty chihuahuas are products of their shitty owners. Any dog is going to have a bad attitude if the owner has no idea how to train it.

[–]ArgonGryphon 3 points4 points ago

Agreed, our Chihuahua was one of the sweetest dogs I've ever had, except to my mom's boyfriend who was just an asshole to him.

[–]carbonated_beverage -3 points-2 points ago

Fuck off, Chihuahuas are great.

[–]Alchemilla 0 points1 point ago

Personally, I would love to get a papillon, but I am so afraid of it being preyed upon like that. Our current dog is 30lbs so we can let her out to enjoy the nice weather and not have to worry about her being carried off by something.

[–]ultraheo044 12 points13 points ago

it reminds me of my dead cat.........

[–]kpep 26 points27 points ago

Poor kitty...

[–]nutbar 88 points89 points ago

It's okay, the cat ended up clawing the owl's eyes out and running back to safety. I saw it from across the pond.

[–]Sgt_Sweetness 13 points14 points ago

Probably. Think of it this way if you were walking out at night and your eyes adjusted to the dark then someone goes and flashes a bright light in your eyes; you are going to be blind as a mofo.

So either the cat was already dead or the owl ending up flying in to a tree and the luckiest cat in the world ran away as fast as it could.

[–]dangerevans007 38 points39 points ago

Trail cams don't flash. That would defeat the purpose of being stealthy. They throw out infrared light and the camera picks it up. Think of it like night vision goggles

[–]Skulder 15 points16 points ago

And before anyone says differently, no, owls can't see in infrared.

[–]n343 5 points6 points ago

But they can see in ultraviolet, which is pretty cool ;)

[–]FiL-dUbz 4 points5 points ago

And Ultra-Violent, the owl pics I see on reddit are vicious sometimes.

[–]jherazob 7 points8 points ago

And creepy, as evidenced by the so-called hellraiser owls gif

[–]GoofyPickles 3 points4 points ago

There are two different kinds of trail cams. This is of the flash variety. You are incorrect.

[–]Sgt_Sweetness 22 points23 points ago

I still believe what nutbar said. The cat is still alive. Hooray....

[–]Egam12 2 points3 points ago

This photo seems to have too much colour to be only infrared light, looks more like a flash.

[–]xeliasx 5 points6 points ago

there are trail cams that flash normaly too we have 2 different ones in our woods both flash. they can be seen at night when something walks in front of it

[–]YouthsIndiscretion 1 point2 points ago

Trail Cams come with multiple options, one of which is having a white incandescent flash to show color, or an infrared flash to avoid scaring the subject. This one looks like an incandescent flash, because of the lack of gray and slight coloring of feathers and leaves.

Edit: linkage.

[–]dangerevans007 0 points1 point ago

I stand corrected. Thanks for the information!

[–]saberxzero 8 points9 points ago

Owls are strong enough to carry a cat? damn

[–]AhhhClem 25 points26 points ago

The cat would weight about 12 lbs. The lifting capability of a coconut laden swallow er I mean owl is much less than that. A large great horned owl might be able to carry off 4 or even 5 lbs. I can see the pixels.

[–]TrolltasticLogic 24 points25 points ago

Are you suggesting that cats migrate?

[–]imakitty 10 points11 points ago

Are you suggesting we dont'?

[–]hells_cowbells 1 point2 points ago

Maybe if the owl gripped the cat by the husk...

[–]bigcitycrows 5 points6 points ago

Great-horned owls are, I doubt the barred owl got very far with a full-grown cat.

I'm amazed by this picture, though, because even that far up of a lift I wouldn't have previously thought a barred owl capable of. The cat would be twice as heavy as the owl.

[–]hey_its_katie 3 points4 points ago

Hate to be the skeptic but I'm really confused at why the cat's body seems to be behind the tail feathers when the talons would be at least in view of the camera from this angle. So, it's possible that your previous thoughts are still pretty accurate.

[–]bigcitycrows 2 points3 points ago

Pic looks authentic, as though the owl grabbed the cat more towards the head and dropped it not far from the ground- the legs are in front of its body and tail feathers, it's blared out by the brightness- but looking at it again it does seem much less dramatic in terms of how high it got and completely possible that the owl struck the cat and the cat leapt in fright or somesuch.

The picture alone isn't conclusive of a barred owl grabbing and lifting off with an adult cat all on its own, though, I think many people are seeing something like this with no prior knowledge of owls and fitting it into folkmyth like "owl dang old swooped down and flew off with Timmy."

[–]TriggerOrcutt -1 points0 points ago

Seems to me the talons are in view (sticking out on the owl's left side) and the cat is not in the owl's grasp

Edit: Looks like you were already replied to while I was looking at other comments

[–]thepdxbikerboy 1 point2 points ago

This is probably the apex. It grabbed the cat, the cat jumped, camera snapped.

[–]BanzaiTree 3 points4 points ago

The infection from the talon wounds will do it in eventually.

[–]earthwormjim91 26 points27 points ago

Sometimes. We had a cat that got grabbed by an owl and carried for a good ways up into a tree. Put up a fight and jumped out of the tree and booked it under the porch. Lived for another 6 years before a coyote got her.

[–]pourhouse 5 points6 points ago

I don't know why but I laughed at that.

[–]darklight12345 17 points18 points ago

it's the whole "what more could happen!?....oh....that." factor.

[–]TeachMeHowToBeBrave 1 point2 points ago

pourhouse is lucky to have someone like you in their life.

[–]kuroyaki 0 points1 point ago

"Roy was a good ole boy/ 'Til the dogs got 'im."

A rare species of Cowl...

[–]undearius 23 points24 points ago

His name is Simon, he's not that rare.

[–]hells_cowbells 0 points1 point ago

Simon Cowell is the king of the beavers, and he cannot deceive us.

[–]SamuraiJakkass86 25 points26 points ago

As a former resident of both a rural town in Kansas AND Maine - I find it funny how many people think the cat put up a fight and/or got away. These things (like most owls) are like flying snapping turtles. That cat not only flailed miserably before being tormented alive, but it probably passed out sometime before it bled out. I've witnessed it happen to 2 cats and known another person who lost a min-pin down the street.

[–]KM849 14 points15 points ago

People projecting their own limited experience onto the entire world. One person has a cat that got away, so this cat will probably get away. You saw cats that didn't get away, so this cat will probably not get away. The world does not center around you.

[–]WalterWhite_Jr 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes the bird gets the cat, and the balance of nature its restored.

[–]jaxspider 1 point2 points ago

Hey hey now! Quit using that darn toten logic around these parts.

[–]fatal_boop 0 points1 point ago

The talons on big birds are enough to break a cats back. Especially with owls or eagles.

I agree with your assessment. If the owl landed a good strike the cat is done for.

[–]riversofgore 3 points4 points ago

This makes me think a little differently about the owl I've been hearing out my window every night. I was glad because I figured he'd be eating any mice trying to get in the house. Maybe, he's trying to eat my cats.

[–]Ancientdinko 5 points6 points ago

if you have mice trying to get in your house and you already own cats, maybe it's time to get a new a cat anyway.

[–]riversofgore 13 points14 points ago

I was hoping they were working together. A cat-owl superteam completely securing my house from the pesky field mouse.

[–]solitary_sheep 2 points3 points ago

What I would give to see how this played out.

[–]aronotrigger 3 points4 points ago

I guarantee that cat didn't go gentle into that good night. That owl's got some battlescars at the very least.

[–]IvyGold 4 points5 points ago

I bet the owl couldn't gain significant altitude and ditched the cat a few yards later.

The cat's probably fine.

[–]CutterJohn 2 points3 points ago

The cat's probably fine.

Aside from half a dozen 1-1.5 inch deep puncture wounds.

[–]IvyGold 1 point2 points ago

Yeah there's that.

But for an outdoor cat?

That's the equivalent of a hoomin's reason to take it easy next weekend.

[–]wergerver 3 points4 points ago

oh look! the kitty is sleeping!

[–]Jrook 2 points3 points ago

Can anybody tell me, is this a domestic cat? And/or what do you think will happen to the cat or the owl? I would guess that the owl may be in for some hurt from the apparently conscious and obviously distraught cat, and the cat is probably got some severe cuts from the owl's talons. Is it common for owls to be killed from attempting to catch cats?

[–]fatal_boop 1 point2 points ago

If its a house cat it probably got destroyed by the owl unlses it could get to a hiding spot quickly after being dropped.

owls are huge and have huge talons. It could have easily done fatal damage to the cat in one strike. It is unlikely that the cat would have been able to do significant damage to the owl.

[–]udder 157 points158 points ago

I wish that owl would fly to Reddit and carry away all the cat posts.

[–]le_trout 14 points15 points ago

And then the owl take over can begin!

[–]jaymill 5 points6 points ago

what...did I just watch?

[–]Shocking 3 points4 points ago

Ever seen the "Look at my horse, my horse is amazing" video? Same guy.

[–]Teflon_McDermit 2 points3 points ago

Next you need to watch narwhals.

[–]gloomdoom 2 points3 points ago

I think the best way to describe that is LOOK HOW WEIRD I CAN BE, INTERNET. JUST LOOK! I'M WEIRD! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!

Of course, the same can be said about most youtube content. So yeah...owls.

[–]hells_cowbells 1 point2 points ago

And now I have that song stuck in my head again.

[–]gloomdoom 7 points8 points ago

[–]CraptainPranet -1 points0 points ago

[–]Peachy88 1 point2 points ago

This is what happened to my first cat, Isis. She was a manx and in the dark looked like a rabbit. She however did not overtake the owl as she was rather tiny.

[–]vivalalexy 1 point2 points ago

[–]Bozowski 1 point2 points ago

Alright, this might be just me..but after I´ve seen this picture, browsing /r/aww is not the same, everytime I see a picture of a cat my mind pastes this owl behind the cat.

[–]medicinalkfc 11 points12 points ago

Damn nature, you scary!

[–]DICKSUBJUICY 3 points4 points ago

If this post gets more up votes I think owls will be the new Mitt Romney here on Reddit.

[–]redgroupclan 0 points1 point ago

My opinion of owls has dropped dramatically since viewing this post.

[–]1arrow24 4 points5 points ago

That...Isn't going to end well

[–]caffeinatedkitty 2 points3 points ago

This happened to one of my cats when I lived up there.... I miss Tigger.

[–]Magnesus -1 points0 points ago

And now I imagined an owl lifting a tiger...

[–]bonny_peg_o_ramsey 0 points1 point ago

That's intense. The owl looks like something straight out of Hades.

[–]project_twenty5oh1 0 points1 point ago

If this cat wasn't declawed, how good are it's odds against that owl? I've seen cats bend 540° on a pivot to swipe at something, and they have some serious claws. Yes, I know owls have serious claws too but most things it picks up with those can't fight back, and he's got this cat by the ass, not the head.

[–]bigcitycrows 4 points5 points ago

A barred owl's feet are bigger, sharper, and more powerful than a housecats' claws and jaws combined, and owls are also covered in a very thick layer of fur that protects them. Some, like the great-horned owl, specifically have thick feathers down to their toes because they grapple with things that have powerful bites (like possums, skunks, and raccoons- sometimes foxes) and it protects their digits.

At best the cat flipped around until it was free and escaped with some serious raking or punctures.

[–]99trumpets 0 points1 point ago

owls are also covered in a very thick layer of fur

....fur....

....FUR....???

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

ಠ_ಠ self

self what are you doing

I apologize deeply, it must be because I associate their down and fuzz and skinny individual facial disk feathers with fur.

[–]Merritt07atWork 0 points1 point ago

Has anyone seen my cat?

[–]Nogitsune 2 points3 points ago

We have neighbours who got 2 kittens including one who was sickly - and shut them out of the house at night. I always sleep with the back door open so within days they were sleeping on my bed. One day the little sickly one just went missing. Everyone in the house was commenting on how it must have been given away... I didn't comment about the humungous owl I have seen resting on our back verandah quite a few times... Anyway, I fed the remaining kitten up on 3 cans of food a day and now she is too big to be taken.

[–]RedPlaneswalker -1 points0 points ago

Then the remaining cat began to train in the martial arts to exact his revenge for his taken brother.

[–]Skyrimgirl321 0 points1 point ago

Did the kitty die? :(

[–]Ricos_Roughnecks 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say yes.

[–]MT_Flesch -1 points0 points ago

it may have, but i'd be willing to bet it took the owl with it

[–]Skyrimgirl321 0 points1 point ago

:(

[–]trm90 0 points1 point ago

Cat: "Dude, I got so wasted last night. You will never believe what happened to me."

[–]PrimevalDelano 0 points1 point ago

That owl has such a great facial expression. HOOT HOOT

[–]gardener1 0 points1 point ago

Wow. :-<

[–]djjuden 0 points1 point ago

bye kitty

[–]mirandapd 0 points1 point ago

Damn! Not even one "Owl and The Pussycat" joke?

[–]Veni_Vidi_Vici_24 2 points3 points ago

That owl must have been STARVING to try and take something that big. I doubt the owl killed that cat.

[–]ableskittle 2 points3 points ago

Reddit needs more owls

[–]Joebrauk 3 points4 points ago

Kitty :(

[–]Alchemilla 1 point2 points ago

It's ok. If the cats I've known in the past are any indication, then this cat used its almighty hell power to get free and then exact revenge on the owl with its freakish feline fury. So it's probably fine.

[–]daisydestruction 4 points5 points ago

I can't believe that NO ONE brought up the idea that things like this is why you're supposed to keep domestic animals under supervision. If you care about your cat, then keep it indoors. Where it can't be eaten by local preditors or killed by cars, diseases carried by ferals, or come to other sorts of harm.

[–]JungleSumTimes 1 point2 points ago

Dem eyes. Terrifying

[–]sectorfour 1 point2 points ago

The owl is telling me "YOU'RE NEXT" with his eyes.

[–]Deep_Black_Joe 2 points3 points ago

The Owls are not what they seem.

[–]tripl3troubl3 4 points5 points ago

That's what happened to my wifes cat Bonkers. Please come back and take her other cat too...

[–]CaptainGurl 0 points1 point ago

Great cat name!

[–]dirtymoney 2 points3 points ago

I like to think that the owl was startled by the flash and dropped Mr Whiskers.

[–]WeCameAsLlamas 5 points6 points ago

Noo!!! Put the kitteh down!

[–]Tahlkewl1 1 point2 points ago

So THATS what happened to Mr Whiskers...

[–]Trapline 2 points3 points ago

On a related note: fuck owl's.

Killin all my bunnies growin up... Assholes.

[–]ArgonGryphon 2 points3 points ago

Should have built better hutches. If they're not secured, all they were were very special bird feeders.

[–]Trapline 0 points1 point ago

We had them for years without issue and then there was an owl invasion, apparently. The same hutches that kept them safe for years were suddenly having their doors torn off during the night and our wittle bunnies were gone.

Majestic as shit but they are on my shit list for their bunny killing. I don't even care if you're a predator. HOW CAN YOU EAT A BUNNY?!

[–]dkeller52 2 points3 points ago

that's absolutely horrid - don't know whether to give you an upvote for the photo or a downvote for the owl

[–]lethargicwalrus 12 points13 points ago

It's the circle of life!

[–]CopyWrittenX 0 points1 point ago

and it moves us all!

[–]Jonthrei 15 points16 points ago

It's Karma.

I imagine that cat has murdered a few thousand smaller birds for little reason other than "lol they're funny when they die."

[–]ArgonGryphon 4 points5 points ago

It really is. I like cats, but I hate when people let their cats outside. I've had to rescue too many birds from the mouths of the neighbourhood cats to be able to let it go. Until cats can learn to only kill invasive species, they need to stay the fuck inside.

[–]ThisIsNotKate 5 points6 points ago

I upvoted for the pure novelty of capturing such a moment. But I feel your pain.

[–]MrFeelBadButtHurt 0 points1 point ago

HOO you lookin' at?

[–]ArgonGryphon 2 points3 points ago

Good Guy Barred Owl. Takes out feral/outdoor cat that would kill birds even though other birds mob the hell out of him if they find him.

[–]eidetic 3 points4 points ago

He's the hero other birds need, not the one they deserve. Or something.

[–]readforit -1 points0 points ago

Whats this? Birds eating cats now?

[–]HilarityEnsuez -1 points0 points ago

My parents let their little Chihuahua walk around leash-less at night with them on the dark trails out back of their Northern Arizona home. One night I saw a large dark form repeatedly passing overtop of the dog. I panicked and told them to pick up their (damned) dog. They didn't understand and even got mad at me for yelling at them when I explained why.

Most parents do not internet right. the dog was probably half the size of this cat.

I can haz wings?

[–]MarvinLazer -1 points0 points ago

Can an owl that size really carry a cat that size? It's gotta weigh at least a couple of pounds more than the owl itself.

Let's not make this into an African vs European Swallow and coconuts debate.
