Even before the invention of critter cams and night vision deer have been weighing in and sparring like gladiators for corn. What you see as a simple and inexpensive vegetable the deer see good old fashioned cash. They use corn to purchase such items as sticks and dirt. Often the thing that confuses most newcomers is the ferocity at which these animals will go at each other for this corn. They really love their sticks and dirt. Don't ask. They aren't that smart. When you might simply pick up a stick or some dirt the deer don't think that linearly. They have a long history of complex rituals and involved processes involving games and betting. The deer in the background are betting for and against their family and friends. Nature, it is sure fucking weird. EDIT: spelling, deer hate bad spelling.

My old man told me a story when I was younger about a fight he saw while hunting. He was up in a tree in the middle of a thicket when he noticed that deer had surrounded the area in a big circle. They were standing shoulder to shoulder, a short while later two huge bucks stepped into the circle to fight. They had to have some prior knowledge of the fight to all show up in that spot before it started. It really was a sanctioned fight between deer.
