De nada.

[–]Chambowsquared 131 points132 points ago

I LOVE this quote, but for future reference, it's 'Her Majesty'. Everyone else except the Monarch is 'Highness'. Forgive the pedantry.

[–]crevzb 0 points1 point ago

As a King, I thought you'd know that.

[–]KING246 11 points12 points ago

As a King I have people that know that for me. Leaving me to more, Kingly things.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Like knowing about swallows?

[–]mikefromengland 2 points3 points ago

Yet after calling her "Majesty" once you are expected to say "Maam" instead. The same would go for "highness" and "sir/maam" for another royal.

[–]xayzer -2 points-1 points ago

...aaand, it's gone.

[–]goots 3 points4 points ago

Majesty this!

:grabs balls:

[–]NiceGrammarNazi 3 points4 points ago

Only Princes and Princesses are referred to as "Highness". Earls, Dukes, Counts, and other ranks of peerage (and their feminine counterparts) are generally referred to by title alone, although sometimes as "Grace". In addition, the Pope is "Holiness", and cardinals and ambassadors are "Excellency".

[–]RedAero -2 points-1 points ago

Is it not appropriate to refer to the regent as His or Her Royal Highness?

[–]SamTheEnglishTeacher 0 points1 point ago

Governors General are called 'His/Her/Your Excellency'. There are other titles in modern usage such as Honorable, Right Honorable, Lord, etc.

[–]CoryBarksdale 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm yes, shallow and pedantic.

[–]ryguy_1 32 points33 points ago

For the queen it's "her majesty"

[–]bangonthedrums 10 points11 points ago

Her Majesty

"Highness" is a title for a prince or princess, not a queen

I think this is incredibly cute.

[–]PrayForMojo_ 13 points14 points ago

It's the mischievous grin. I love this picture because you get to see an always composed and proper lady look like an 8 year old girl playing at Queen.

[–]Neodymium 5 points6 points ago

Prince Phillip always seems to get a smile out of her. It's nice that such a long marriage seems to still be one of happiness.

[–]imsabbel 3 points4 points ago

You do good work

[–]TwoLives 3 points4 points ago

Yep, I did try to remove that comment, knowing full well that I'm not OP. Guilty as charged! -hopes he's not alone-

[–]damendred 1 point2 points ago

What a smart ensemble she has on there.

[–]spacec0re 195 points196 points ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the context of this was he dressed as a palace guard and went about business with the others to see if she'd notice. She did, hence the laughing.

ETA: Apparently I am wrong, his uniform is different and he in fact just looks silly. :D Thanks for correcting me!

[–]teeyul 66 points67 points ago

This is actually Philips's uniform for Trooping the Colour, so it is likely that OP's title is closer to the mark.

On a side note, here's a little article about the Queen's apparently great sense of humour. There are no sources listed though, so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

[–]sir_grumph 14 points15 points ago

I very much want to believe that article.

[–]FluxCapacitorFluxing 10 points11 points ago

'Bodies everywhere" is pretty great.

[–]teeyul 3 points4 points ago

As do I, although I think one or two of the "quotes" are at least a little dubious.

I WANT TO BELIEVE.

[–]UncleOxidant 0 points1 point ago

...but she didn't crack a smile once after parachuting into the Olympics.

[–]cdawg414 5 points6 points ago

I find Best Western's journalism to be second to none and am therefore quite comfortable taking that article as gospel.

[–]iLie4Love 3 points4 points ago

I doubt either the OP headline or this theory are on the mark. Pictures freeze moments in time that look strange out of context but were perfectly normal in motion. The queen is just smiling or speaking at someone out of the frame and this snap caught it at an odd looking moment. Phillip being at the same place in his uniform is probably unrelated.

[–]teeyul 1 point2 points ago

I fully agree, but whereas spacec0re's comment about dressing as a palace guard is definitely wrong, OP's title has at least a small chance of being correct. Hence, closer to the mark, not on the mark.

But you're right, chances are this is just a lucky shot.

PS. For future reference, Prince Philip spells his name with one L, rather than the more widely used two. The more you know! ;)

[–]hafetysazard 7 points8 points ago

Given that his uniform is quite different from the common palace guards, it would be immediately obvious that he wasn't one. Although, it would be quite funny to see a family member in full military dress. If I am not mistaken, he appears to be in Scots Guard officer's dress.

[–]TheUncle 2 points3 points ago

You can clearly see the flaming grenade on his collar and the evenly spaced buttons on his tunic - he is in a Grenadier Guards uniform.

EDIT - stupidly wrote Coldstream instead of Grenadier...

[–]hafetysazard -1 points0 points ago

What are the distinctive royal features does his royal uniform have? Besides his medals.

[–]TheUncle 4 points5 points ago

Basically, you can find all the information here, but since it's not very comfortable to navigate through there, I'll give a short summary:

The Duke of Edinburgh holds the position of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, and wears the appropriate uniform, including colonel rank epaulettes.

The Aiguillette is because he was Aide-de-camp to King George VI.

The blue sash and golden badge hanging from it denote him as a member of the Order of the Garter. It's hard to see but he has three large stars on his left breast, one each for the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Thistle and the Order of the British Empire.

In this photo you can see the three stars, and the medals of course, and note that he has wings above his medals, although I can't discern which design these wings are.

Please note that any one of these honors and medals can be earned and worn by any British person, and so do not identify him directly as a member of the royal family, except by their quantity.

[–]KempoRage 2 points3 points ago

Assuming this is right, I wish your comment was upvoted more for context instead of a joke about some guy being a mexican as the top comment...

[–]Cubone69 30 points31 points ago

The Royal Tub of Pudding is missing and she is laughing? Oh wait, thats Canada, nevermind.

[–]rahammer3rd 28 points29 points ago

...as is tradition.

[–]crevzb 26 points27 points ago

[–]YouGuysAreSick 46 points47 points ago

Maybe she was thinking about that one time she jumped out of an helicopter into the Olympic stadium with James Bond. Good memories for sure...

[–]rockne 4 points5 points ago

Ann Helicopter is a bitch.

[–]AidanChristy 4 points5 points ago

Maybe he's just British and it's pronounced "An 'elicopta" ... which is technically correct.

[–]rockne 0 points1 point ago

I didn't think of that. :)

[–]jrollinondubs 26 points27 points ago

Old people being cute together....dat feeling.

[–]mitharas 23 points24 points ago

I bet they had some kinky adventures with that uniform and she is reminded of that.

[–]Earlier_this_week 16 points17 points ago

eyes bleeding

[–]afondul 6 points7 points ago

She always has the BEST outfits. I guess you have to being the queen and all..

[–]jhra 6 points7 points ago

Could you imagine if she just said fuck it an started wearing purple sweat pants and beer t-shirts?

[–]Neodymium 1 point2 points ago

Oh god, why did you have to put such a ghastly image into my head! :D

[–]mlc2475 16 points17 points ago

well, in fairness, it IS a funny hat...

[–]davesidious 3 points4 points ago

Tell that to the guys who wear them :)

[–]mlc2475 1 point2 points ago

I have. They don't respond so I just assume they agree

[–]thatchelpage 6 points7 points ago

and how come the chin straps are never long enough

[–]Inphoar 10 points11 points ago

That's about the right size, actually. It's not to keep it on so much as to protect the face from sabre slashes.

[–]Neodymium 0 points1 point ago

The fur is made from bears :(

[–]Aines 9 points10 points ago

Somebody painted a murale out of this picture in London. I don't remember the name of the street...

You crafty motherfucker.

[–]Hellothereawesome 3 points4 points ago

TSM.

[–]stimulate_my_noggin 2 points3 points ago

I'm pretty sure that smirk on Her Majesty's face is the "Aw yiss, I tapped dat ass" grin. Because, not gonna lie, Prince Phillip still looks pretty fine in that uniform.

[–]cocorobot 10 points11 points ago

the Queen is human? go figure.

[–]FireShots 3 points4 points ago

Lies! The Queen of England has never even defecated in her life, and she would not even think of doing such a thing!

[–]FriendlyCommie 1 point2 points ago

Queen of Britain

Edit: I checked the Wiks and apparently she is first and foremost known as the Queen of the Commonwealth Realm

[–]airnoone 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for educating the colonial ingrates my good man.

[–]riohachachachacha 4 points5 points ago

This is literally the only picture I've ever seen of Her Majesty smiling.

[–]Pedro9000ish 7 points8 points ago

She smiles constantly when she is at the horse racing.

[–]Sir_Meowsalot 3 points4 points ago

Or when she is walking her gaggle of Corgies.

[–]lawyerlady 1 point2 points ago

do corgies come in gaggles?

I suppose a murder of corgies might take away from the cuteness.

[–]Sir_Meowsalot 0 points1 point ago

I would hazard that it most likely is a troupe of corgies. Much more entertaining then murderous corgies.

[–]Neodymium 1 point2 points ago

If you ever see a progression of photos from her coronation to present day she starts out beaming with apparent joy and then it's a very steady downward slope until the present unsmiling day.

[–]paracog 0 points1 point ago

Hers is pretty goofy too.

[–]SUCOL 1 point2 points ago

What do you think she has in her purse? I'd imagine she has all her needs already taken care of wherever she may be, so whats in it? some coins? old people things? chewing gum and candy corn from 1983?

[–]davesidious 31 points32 points ago

Her biographer revealed she has a mirror, lipstick, and a £5 note - for use either as a donation to church on Sunday, or ID.

[–]mewarmo990 6 points7 points ago

I love the idea that a monarch can just carry around some currency as picture ID.

[–]bangonthedrums 22 points23 points ago

Well, here's an idea that might tickle you:

When Prince Harry goes to a strip club, and tips the dancers, he is stuffing pieces of paper with his Grandma's picture on them into g-strings

[–]thomacocks 0 points1 point ago

What about the pearl handled pistol? (I can't find a source for wherever I read this, but it's a cheeky rumor.)

[–]Neodymium 0 points1 point ago

and some chocolates wrapped up in a hankie too, isn't there?

[–]bettorworse -1 points0 points ago

Not seen behind her is a guy carrying a backpack with all of the crap a woman normally carries around and more.

[–]hafetysazard 0 points1 point ago

Regal as fuck.

[–]_followthelight 0 points1 point ago

And this is why I love elderly people.

[–]Narkkhan 0 points1 point ago

"Enjoy Wearing that uniform for you shall never be king!"

[–]theheadgeek 0 points1 point ago

She is such a cute lady when she smiles.

[–]bettorworse 0 points1 point ago

[–]bedit 3 points4 points ago

I actually had the same reaction she did. It is a little absurd.

[–]Chambowsquared 24 points25 points ago

Not so absurd actually. The reason for its shape was when the enemy cavalry used to charge at the guardsman, the bearskins meant they had difficulty gauging where the head started. It meant they usually aimed high as, as you can see, he wears the chin strap under the bottom lip

[–]CodeMcK 9 points10 points ago

Why wouldn't they just aim for the face?

[–]reddidtorof2086 9 points10 points ago

Or anything below the chinstrap for that matter, can't imagine you'd be very agile balancing that thing on your head.

[–]Chambowsquared 18 points19 points ago

It sits on the head very securely, like any cap or hat that is all nice and snug around the crown. The inside of the fur is like a light basket weave to it is not top heavy. With regards to aiming at the face. Note the fur resting over the eyes in the picture, the face is nicely obscured but still very easy to see through. The French didn't get it when charging full pelt. Say thank you to all the confession bears for saving British lives.

[–]Turnshroud 0 points1 point ago

This does make sense, but it wouldn't work too well if you were facing a line of them since you'd be able to see them. For a skirmish or some sort of stealth maneuvering, perhaps

[–]bummer69a 2 points3 points ago

Fought in many line infantry battles?

[–]Turnshroud -1 points0 points ago

I'm a Napoleonic enthusiast if that's what you mean

And in general, the standard musket wasn't too accurate (with the better, baker rifles being reserved for skirmishing units or light infantry). You would have to aim, but most hits were usually to the chest region if I am not mistaken By which I mean, it would be easier to aim for the chest when advancing opt wanting to deplete the line

[–]Kratoyd 11 points12 points ago

The problem with aiming low from horseback is that the further down you swoop, the more balance you lose. If you have a long weapon, you don't want to pole vault.

[–]oxidentally 8 points9 points ago

I'm forever pole vaulting with my long weapon.

[–]Sappharos 6 points7 points ago

That's actually really fucking smart. Then again, I would say that because I'm English.

[–]wintercast -1 points0 points ago

why is the chin strap under the bottom lip? Why not under the chin, or no strap at all?

[–]Chambowsquared 11 points12 points ago

From a distance, when the cavalryman will begin to aim, a midst the smoke, the bouncing on a horse, disorientating noise, the head is in-distinctive and when one wears the chinstrap under the bottom lip, the head will seem higher to the cavalryman who does not know any better, he will be aiming for the head and aim high. It is not foolproof but lessened the chances which is always good. A lance to the head can be a bugger

[–]drevie 2 points3 points ago

That's more than she smiled at the Olympic opening ceremony

[–]priestess355 3 points4 points ago

She's old and got tired. That ceremony went for hours until past midnight.

[–]pretty_happy 4 points5 points ago

God I love her :)

[–]auroraborememalice 1 point2 points ago

Me too.

[–]olafthebent 1 point2 points ago

Phillip is an endless source of mirth

Especially where inappropriate comments about minorities are concerned

... or if he farts

[–]grghk 2 points3 points ago

Why is he not a king?

[–]30percentAlpaca 29 points30 points ago

While none of the other responses are incorrect, they probably don't clarify anything for you.

When a king is the ruling monarch, and he marries, his wife is called the Queen Consort, simply Queen for short. The Queen Consort is not the ruler of the land, she is the King's (ruler's) wife.

When a queen is the ruling monarch, and she marries, her husband does not become the King, as the title "King" is above that of the Queen. Therefore, a queen's husband is called the prince consort, simply prince for short. The Prince Consort, much like the Queen Consort, is not the ruler of the land, but the Queen's husband.

QE2 is the eldest daughter of the previous ruling monarch, King George 6. As King George did not have any sons, his eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, became the ruling monarch as Queen upon his death. When this happened, Philip gained the title of Prince Consort.

[–]grghk 5 points6 points ago

So if she died, the throne or role would go to Charles. Phillip would not be King. Interesting stuff.

[–]cdnbroker 1 point2 points ago

Just like how Elizabeth's mom was the "queen mother" and not the ruler, as she was just the (deceased) King's wife...

[–]grghk 3 points4 points ago

Thank you.

[–]gnomishmidgets 0 points1 point ago

Throw this in as an edit mate, this is founded from George of Denmark who refused the title of King consort and deferment to his wife Queen Anne, allowing for one of the few successful Queen rulers, from there it became convention to be called Prince Consort, when Victoria tried to make albert king the people refused to buck the tradition.

[–]priestess355 -1 points0 points ago

And Camilla has indicated she wishes to be known as Princess Consort, not queen.

[–]CatrinEluned 1 point2 points ago

Because he's a Queens consort and not the actual ruler.

[–]MonaMonzano 2 points3 points ago

The title of King is > the title of Queen. Since no one is permitted to be above the monarch, in the event that the monarch is a woman then her spouse will not take the title King. So as not to be elevated above her. In the event that the monarch is a man, his spouse will indeed be called Queen, because that title does not overstep his.

[–]probablyaverage -1 points0 points ago

They do not let Kings marry in to the title.

[–]sometimes_i_work 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one that wants to know what she has in the little handbag?

[–]alltimeisrelative -1 points0 points ago

It's nice to see her laugh, let alone smile, for once.

[–]chilari 0 points1 point ago

I wonder who decides what the Duke's dress uniform should look like? I wonder if her Maj has any say?

[–]tapsauce 0 points1 point ago

Aww..shes sucha cutesy...if I had a grandma, shed be just like her

[–]Jorion -1 points0 points ago

she DOES smile!!!

[–]icydeadppl -1 points0 points ago

A friend of my mum saw this photo framed in a charity shop for about 50p about 10 years ago. She bought it for my mum as a joke birthday present and it still sits on the counter today. My mum makes people come up with caption for it when they come round.

[–]offensivegrandma -1 points0 points ago

They are very cute together!

[–]capt_ishmael -1 points0 points ago

I can't believe I never thought to ask this, but what is the deal with those hats? What is there function?

[–]XDHawkster 0 points1 point ago

cmd+f chambowsquared

He explains it very well :p

[–]LadyLurksAlot -1 points0 points ago

It's really not so bad until you get to the hat...

[–]simplicity541 -1 points0 points ago

I am genuinely shocked at the dire impressions of British vernacular. Her Majesty is having a royal chuckle at Prince Phillip's ghastly attire, most definitely the first time I've seen a sincere reaction from the Queen.

[–]i_am_not_sam -1 points0 points ago

Aw...

[–]tonym978 -1 points0 points ago

This was on pinterest several days ago. Reddit what have you become?

[–]Atheist_Simon_Haddad 0 points1 point ago

This is my favorite picture of the Queen.

[–]donrane 1 point2 points ago

Taken out of context - Just seconds before he flashed Prince Junior

bit of roleplay in the bedroom tonight

[–]I_am_the_Jukebox -1 points0 points ago

Apparently, she is amused.

[–]Connor6 -1 points0 points ago

Queeny is so cute

[–]Blasterion -1 points0 points ago

her majesty laughed?

[–]Maxwyfe 1 point2 points ago

"Fancy a shag?"

[–]YouDontSayBro -1 points0 points ago

isn't he a little too old to still be a prince?

[–]rspeed 0 points1 point ago

Ain't marriage grand?

[–]grinerohey -1 points0 points ago

Bitch wait til we get home....

[–]Frizz4real -1 points0 points ago

Science save the Queen!

[–]tronn4 0 points1 point ago

I bet he stuck that up her va-jay-jay the night before. That's the source of the giggle

[–]lowrads 0 points1 point ago

On second thought, let's not go there. 'Tis a silly place.

[–]iceyhot4 0 points1 point ago

she's drunk

[–]SonOfTK421 0 points1 point ago

She's the Queen...what could she possibly have in that little bag?
