Funny thing actually ... Back in the day they would put fire extinguishers over trash cans because back in then they were the most common thing to go up in flames. Unlike our fire extinguishers of today they usually consisted of glass bottles filled with water with a heat trigger set to break the glass if it got too hot. Once it breaks the idea was the water would put out the flames the problem was they were never that good either the trigger never released or the bottle was missing. The bottle was kind of cool too as they meant it to be kinda like a fire grenade you either left in its spot or grabbed from its holder to throw at a fire.

Soooo yeah kinda useless info but I thought it was cool.

All I know is you're not supposed to use water to extinguish a fire that has any oil involved. Since the water is heavier than oil, it will sink to the bottom, then when it gets over heated, all of it will explode out creating a bigger flame than what you started with.

That wouldn't actually work. The fire would burn the string and cause the bottle to drop, but the water in the bottle would prevent the plastic from melting and releasing the water. You can try it for yourself with a lighter and a water bottle.

To go even further, if you fill a balloon with water and hold it over a flame, it won't pop. You can sit there until the water boils.
