Time to start building upwards, not outwards.

[–]brian1987 145 points146 points ago

I say, we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

[–]chickenshirt 81 points82 points ago

"Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others!"

[–]NurRauch 15 points16 points ago

We have the technology.

[–]BaconCanada 1 point2 points ago

"don't blame me, I voted for Kodos"

[–]drums2k11 3 points4 points ago

Dustin Browder says the technology isn't there yet.

[–]limitedimagination 5 points6 points ago

"What is this, some kind of tube?"

[–]SomeFokkerTookMyName 0 points1 point ago

That's 'cause you got a little high.

[–]llcbdavis 1 point2 points ago

you just made me love politics

[–]shif 40 points41 points ago

its a heavy earthquake zone

[–]Cerveza_por_favor 6 points7 points ago

You mean like San Francisco? Which has absolutely no high rise buildings?

[–]awesomemanftw 2 points3 points ago

US: Rich first world country

Mexico: Poor third world country

spot the difference?

[–]SomeFokkerTookMyName 1 point2 points ago

It's funny because poor buildings fall down quicker than rich buildings.

[–]porgio 2 points3 points ago

Me gusta tu nombre.

[–]buttluvin 0 points1 point ago

yo tambien

[–]ThatHighCracker 6 points7 points ago

Ahhhh! I was thinking it was probably due to the extremely high cost of building material and heavy-duty equipment. Glad to know there is a practical reason. Thanks!

[–]nitrousconsumed -1 points0 points ago

All houses here are made of concrete/wood so building materails are insanely cheap actually. All one needs is a pick-up truck, a dolly, and friends.

[–]adelafuentep 7 points8 points ago

Concrete cheap? Are you even Mexican? Cemex controls most of the market and sells it at ridiculous prices.

[–]DeviousCheese 11 points12 points ago

Yea, do you even build, bro?

[–]adelafuentep 0 points1 point ago

Me building has nothing to do with overpriced concrete in Mexico. Cemex is corrupt and has ridiculous prices. Cemex products are cheaper in Europe than in Mexico, compare minimum wages and taxes; the building business in Mexico is just corrupt.

[–]pink_pucker 3 points4 points ago

Bro don't even build.

[–]mhelliwell 2 points3 points ago

Whoosh

[–]buttluvin 0 points1 point ago

like Los Angeles?

[–]Sh0rtR0und 1 point2 points ago

Not entirely true. Mexico City does have a CBD w/ skyscrapers. There's just 20+ million people living in that metro area. Population is spread out like n US megacities.

[–]pacofvf 13 points14 points ago

[–]Litre 2 points3 points ago

I was just there earlier this month on business. Definitely the jewel of the area, but smells like shit when it rains as it's built on top of a landfill.

[–]pacofvf 5 points6 points ago

well to be fair to Santa Fe, smells bad because people throw garbage in the streets and sewage gets stuck because of the garbage. The landfill wasn't from organic garbage so it does not produce methane or other smelly gases, those were mines and then refilled with land from other excavations like the subway.

[–]Aschebescher 2 points3 points ago

Looks very nice, actually.

[–]knightsword2010 0 points1 point ago

Whats the point of the traffic circle in the second pic?

Its look as though the traffic is stopped in two directions and vehicles cant turn left?

[–]pacofvf 3 points4 points ago

haha no, this is a one way street with a double way street controlled roundabout junction. All the intersections of this avenue are controlled roundabouts with monuments, fountains, statues, etc, in the center.

[–]knightsword2010 0 points1 point ago

Ah, I see the one way now. Interesting.

[–]systmh 22 points23 points ago

That really starts to suck when everything is built by self-taught engineers and there's no building code.

Not to say that this doesn't suck too. I went to stay there with some Israeli friends of mine (descendants of the Jewish WWII refugees who was denied port at the US so they went down to Mexico). That place is scary. A popular burglary deterrent is to build 10-foot concrete walls and set hundreds of broken bottles into the mix before it dries. long glass shards extruded out of everything. It actually looks kinda pretty, in a frightening sort of way.

[–]ThatHighCracker 44 points45 points ago

All I can picture is a bunch of stereotypical Mexicans managing to stack their houses on top of each-other like bunk beds, screaming "Tanto espacio para las actividades!"

[–]spazzvogel 7 points8 points ago

So at what point do they become Mexican Jews? How long have they been there, and do they plan on staying? Because you can't be Israeli Jewish forever, at some point, the Mexican has to come into play.

[–]pablothe 6 points7 points ago

History of Jews in Mexico. With the amount of racism and elitism in my country most Jewish descents just keep getting companies their parents had and it's an on-going circle. If the Jewish were to mix with the natives they would be taken out of the Jewish community.

[–]spazzvogel 2 points3 points ago

That's really tragic amigo, I'm a guerro and I married a Duranguense. Sure our cultures are pretty different, but I don't think her parents will ever kick me out of their community. You know the Jewish nepotism lives in every culture where they live. Not just Jewish folks though, Asian and Indians are really big on that too.

[–]Xam1324 0 points1 point ago

Fucking ouch dude lol why dont people just break them with rocks?

[–]Fuckin_Hipster 17 points18 points ago

Because extra-broken glass is still broken glass.

[–]systmh 1 point2 points ago

Because there's a lot of them and you'd have to dangle from a wall with one hand and smash 'em with another? Maybe? I dunno, I actually hadn't thought of that. I just looked at it, went nope and walked away.

I did see a few places with bloody bottles though. Fresh bloody bottles.

[–]Amorougen 0 points1 point ago

They throw blankets over them - or did in some of the Northern cities.

[–]werdna314 -1 points0 points ago

sand the glass down to be flat against the wall

That propably will make it more pretty.

[–]tboner6969 1 point2 points ago

gotta hand it to third-world ingenuity and jury-rigged hack jobs. but then again, an obstacle such as this can easily be negotiated by someone with a heavy duty canvas sheet and enough motivation.

[–]V1ruk 1 point2 points ago

You just described the security for most of south america. It's cheap as hell, and as good as razor wire, if not better.

Carpet can defeat it pretty easily though, so most people do use curls of razor wire now, or electric fencing, if they have the cash.

[–]Consinneration 0 points1 point ago

Not without Carnegie Steel, bro.

[–]cbarrister 2 points3 points ago

You see that shit on the History channel?

[–]snarkyaardvark 4 points5 points ago

Kang: My fellow Mexicans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball; but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

[–]AshsToAshs 3 points4 points ago

7 seconds too slow :(

[–]dudekillsbears92 0 points1 point ago

Clearly you don't live in Mexico city, we are prone to have earthquakes at any time, and the city was built in a valley, in what used to be a huge lake, so yeah we are sinking like a few inches every year. You don't see that many tall buildings either...

[–]ohhaayreddit[S] 194 points195 points ago

Original Post here from a year ago. I found it breath taking, maybe there are some like myself that have yet to see it? If the general consensus is against the post I'll delete it.

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/ggs07/mexico_city_looks_like_an_urban_ocean_from_up/?already_submitted=true

[–]diemockingbirddie 191 points192 points ago

Do not delete. 2 reasons. 1) Many people, myself included, have not seen it. 2) It is okay to talk about things more than once.

[–]PianoTrumpetMax 15 points16 points ago

Reddit rules clearly state to not bitch about reposts. So anyone out there that does... Quityabitchin

[–]wurz81 14 points15 points ago

It only bothers me when the poster claims it as their own. They don't even have to say its a repost. The r/aww post of the cat and deer is a repost. The title of it makes it sound like it is in their front lawn. It is not and is deserving of downvotes.

[–]PianoTrumpetMax 4 points5 points ago

That's something we can both agree on then.

[–]w2tpmf 33 points34 points ago

Better yet, lets give credit to the photographer. Here is his page.

[–]grinch337 7 points8 points ago

No. You weren't a scumbag about it by claiming it as your own - and you even linked to it within the post. IMO, that's exactly how you should do it. So, thanks.

[–]bestbiff 2 points3 points ago

I didn't know but it was actually a repost when I posted it too. I did the search function and everything. Didn't see anything. Oh well can't win e'm all. still a nice picture.

[–]rummuds 1 point2 points ago

I like the system of people reposting cause there is no real way to tell.. as long as people downvote things they have already seen here so that you are more likely to see new content

[–]juanzy 12 points13 points ago

You can't understand how big Mexico City is until you see it in person. Contrary to popular belief, there are some very nice areas; I've heard NYC called the concrete jungle, well Ciudad is the concrete ocean.

[–]Oznog99 12 points13 points ago

Hmmm... I'm looking at Naucalpan/Mexico City on Google Maps... it's more informative.

Mexico City itself is mostly squared off in regular, straight street grids. Naucalpan, which has grown together into Mexico City and there's no clear separation, well, it's not flat ground, which makes it hard to make into a regular street grid.

But it seems to notably lack arterial roads- there's the La Torres highway, and then just a maze of residential block after block. No main roads, you'd have to drive through dozens of neighborhoods to get anywhere from the outskirts. Few roads have any straight lengths or are notably larger than the residentials.

Google Maps shows a few in yellow that are apparently used as "main streets" but they're not straight and the line keep changing streets at corners. As in "it's a main drive up until this point, then take a left for the next main drive, then go around this turn and take a right" to traverse it.

[–]tazcel 6 points7 points ago

this is the look from the ground -> Google Street View

[–]cbarrister 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! That's awesome. I just took a virtual walk around for a few blocks and you can see people walking on the streets and look into the open storefronts. Gives you a really good sense of the area... amazing that wasn't possible even a few years ago.

[–]penguinrider 3 points4 points ago

I don't know about you guys, but I just spent like 15 minutes exploring the streets of Mexico on street view.

[–]Oznog99 1 point2 points ago

I did too- I think I just got shot at, on Google Street View.

Man, narrow streets with people parked on both sides, leaving room for like 3/4 of a car between them...

[–]cbarrister 1 point2 points ago

Anyone familiar with the area know how long an American who spoke no Spanish would make it wandering around this neighborhood alone? Is it relatively safe or super dangerous?

edit: also, /r/forts would love this. With no zoning laws there are tons of interesting hand made fortifications.

[–]bluehiro 2 points3 points ago

Large parts of Mexico city just happened, not a lot of planning involved. Especially the hilly parts. People will just steal power from a nearby power pole and start building shanty-towns. Over time these areas become more mature and they put in sewers and utilities.

In the end, some areas are just really difficult to get around. But that's part of Mexico City's charm.

[–]RC-1138 15 points16 points ago

Getting lost in that city would drive you absolutely mad.

[–]favela_astrobleme 3 points4 points ago

"Con...crete jungle!"

[–]ordnajelas 1 point2 points ago

Belive me, it's worse than you think it would be... I love this city (not this area) but getting lost here does drive you mad.

[–]ms_antoinette -1 points0 points ago

And probably get you shot.

[–]De4thDoll 24 points25 points ago

Fuck! this is a lot of people!

[–]GrinningPariah 17 points18 points ago

It is a ton of people, true, but I'd say a surprisingly small number. It's very low density sprawl, if you compared these neighborhoods to like Shanghai in terms of people per square mile.

[–]dizmog 4 points5 points ago

It's not that small, it's 3rd in the world and first in the western hemisphere. But if you wanted to compare density, look at Karachi or Cairo.

It's the only city on that list I've visited and in comparison to any city I've been to in the states, the amount of people and traffic is staggering.

Edit: looked again, I've been to NYC, still though, no comparison.

[–]Liberalguy123 0 points1 point ago

Can confirm that Cairo is fucking intense. Not the place to go if you're claustrophobic.

[–]ImMystikz 0 points1 point ago

21 million metropolitan area its pretty huge. I have been there and I will tell you that it is pretty dense.

[–]MrBurd 11 points12 points ago

Wasn't entirely sure if it was an actual picture or a still from 2012.

[–]mrpickles 61 points62 points ago

This picture terrifies me. Is this the destiny of humanity. Are we doomed to make the rest of the earth look like this?

Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species, and I realised that humans are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment; but you humans do not. Instead you multiply, and multiply, until every resource is consumed. The only way for you to survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern... a virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer on this planet, you are a plague, and we... are the cure.

[–]onion_cutting_champ 49 points50 points ago

I'm going to intject some totally baseless optimism here:

Fuck no we aren't. Bitch we are going to go into space leaving all dingy flats, broke down houses, creepy mansions, Milton Keynes etc. behind and make cool ass space bungalows lightyears away. Some day in the future your descendant will look out at the view of a beautiful mercury sea illuminated by two suns, before turning to wake their fine ass alien partner for some kinky as fuck out of this world (literally) sex.

[–]peacelovedope 21 points22 points ago

Reddit: I promise I will ALWAYS upvote out-of-this-world sex.

[–]onion_cutting_champ 8 points9 points ago

I'm pretty sure this would make the greatest presidential pitch of all time,

"My fellow countrymen, let me be frank, we are not in a good place; the economy is a jumbled mess, our biggest export seems to be war, we are slowly killing our planet and Kinder Surprises are still banned here. A brighter tomorrow is not guaranteed and the wounds of the past will continue to haunt us; but I can promise you this: we will go into space. And we will fuck the brains out of everything we find."

[–]DeadWade 3 points4 points ago

The next president of the united states...is this guy.

[–]onion_cutting_champ 2 points3 points ago

President Theodore "Space-Fucker" Plissken III

[–]RustyDynamite 1 point2 points ago

Sure why not!

[–]mrpickles 0 points1 point ago

I understand you're going for baseless optimism here, but FYI for those who want the numbers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=SP6A1FD147A45EF50D&feature=player_detailpage&v=CFyOw9IgtjY#t=205s

[–]onion_cutting_champ 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, but this does not include the key factor of "motivation to bang hot aliens", this needs some serious penis peer review.

[–]wtfisdisreal 1 point2 points ago

Classic cornucopian vs Malthusian arguments.

[–]lurking_bishop 0 points1 point ago

Consider this:

The drive for space exploration is another argument for us spreading like a desease, because the one thing that makes space desirable is that it's vast and as far as we know, empty.

However, it would only take a couple million years to colonise the complete Milky Way even if we could never master speeds larger than 10% Lightspeed. Which means that maybe, in the distant future, a distant relative of you will look at the space around a star and wish he could just get out of there

[–]kxq 12 points13 points ago

oh god, your comment just made me laugh. what an incredibly melodramatic statement

you are looking at one of the worst planned & maintained cities in the world. to declare that this is the future, or to worry like that, is remarkably silly.

a vast majority of developed countries ... and now a lot of the developing countries as well ... pay a lot of attention to having well planned / designed cities with plenty of park space & appropriate population density to enable enough greenery

[–]ScubaPlays 2 points3 points ago

To add on to this, if anything we're going up, leaving more ground space for vegitation. Along with that many cities (like Chicago) are adding more and more "green roofs" that at least gives back some of the space taken away by the footprint of the building.

[–]balooistrue 4 points5 points ago

No, there will be a point where the scale of population tips in the other direction. Perhaps it will happen dramatically with something like nuclear war or disease, or gradually once our resources begin to diminish.

[–]Atomic1337 0 points1 point ago

You know, once a virus managed to kill someone it usually moves to the next body, considering that we are not a virus to the planet, we are a virus in the universe that is about to move to the next body. Or even worse a cancerous tumor that is about to spread.

And even if our population starts to decrease someday once we manage to get off this rock we'll start to increase again no doubt, I mean what is supposed to stop us?

[–]balooistrue 2 points3 points ago

Does it need to stop? To the universe, life is just a thing that changes the configuration of a small amount of matter. In the end, the only thing that matters is "Will humans survive forever or will they not?" We are only a disease to ourselves, nothing else cares because it isn't able to.

[–]Amandil 0 points1 point ago

This is sooner then you think. Current projections top us out at around 12 billion, most countries are leveling out to no population growth and some slightly negative.

[–]Achalemoipas 0 points1 point ago

No, that won't happen.

We can't make the rest of earth look like that because if we make just a bit more of the earth look like that, about half of humanity will die. We'll kill ourselves before getting to that point.

[–]pink_pucker 0 points1 point ago

That's not true... we can turn earth into Trantor. It will be a tragedy on some level, but also an opportunity for 100 Billion of us to live and enjoy life in our subterranean warrens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trantor

[–]johnylaw 3 points4 points ago

Yeah it really kind of makes me ill to look at this picture. I get the same thing when I see really large equipment/vehicles. I don't mean Hummer, but like the giant industrial stuff. I would say the feeling is akin to vertigo.

[–]UraharaZR 0 points1 point ago

It kinda reminds me of WH:40k universum.

[–]Nolakpd504 1 point2 points ago

we occupy less than 1% of all earth's land. The earth is bigger than you can think unless you sky dive from space.

[–]complete_asshole_ 0 points1 point ago

Not if we get a good plague or two.

[–]shotijs -4 points-3 points ago

[–]PhilbertMcFilibuster 12 points13 points ago

How long does it take to get across town? Like, say I want to go watch a movie, and stop at cheesecake factory on the way home...

[–]bluehiro 11 points12 points ago

Depends on traffic. You have to think of Mexico City as a collection of cities grouped together. To cross the whole thing would take 3-4 hours depending on the path you choose. If traffic is bad it could take all day.

[–]pipian 1 point2 points ago

Sadly, there's no cheesecake factory there (yet). But usually there will be a movie theater close to your house, you don't have to go across town to get to it.

[–]LandonSharps -1 points0 points ago

Two to three weeks depending on how many times you need to change your gas mask.

[–]silviam 6 points7 points ago

Mexico City is gradually sinking as the city was built on a lake bed.

THANK YOU. You're the only person here who actually knows what's going on.

FYI to Brits: "The Mexican Wave" is only known as "the wave" in the states, not sure how you guys tacked the Mexican on there, but I'm guessing not alot of people get this reference.

[–]I_am_Mexico 7 points8 points ago

Because we showed the wave to the world for the first time.

[–]bluehiro 0 points1 point ago

Never saw any of that when I lived there. But it's been a while, I hear things have gotten a lot worse with the Government cracking down on the cartels...

This would be a terrible place for an earhquake or tsunami to hit. Too much man, You built too much.

[–]spaceboy79 0 points1 point ago

This was such a good movie. Man I loved Wall-E.

can also be personally experienced from taco bell

[–]cbarrister -1 points0 points ago

If that many people are going to live there, why doesn't the government condemn a few houses and put in a few main roads, parks, schools, etc?

[–]puffincurls 0 points1 point ago

I love this city.

You've never seen a virus have you?...

[–]bheklilr 0 points1 point ago

This is Mexico City, but Guadalajara looks very similar. It was astounding how many people lived in that city, many of whom don't have air conditioning, internet, or even electricity in a lot of cases. They seemed pretty content, though, it was just very different than what I was used to in the US.

[–]shif 7 points8 points ago

i lived in guadalajara for 2 years and its one of the most modern cities in mexico, all the high tech companies have factories there the mexican silicon valley is outside guadalajara, also its never hot enough to need AC, at least for what we mexicans are used too, its never too cold either, i really recommend visiting this city

[–]bheklilr 7 points8 points ago

I was actually there on a business trip with one such tech company. The city was amazing, I absolutely loved it there. It was mid December and about 60 degrees out. It wass also incredibly vibrant and culturally rich. Mariachi bands on almost every corner, tons of great architecture, the food was to die for, the women beautiful, and the tequila delicious. I would go back in a heartbeat.

[–]LaVidaEsUnaBarca 4 points5 points ago

Yes, as a general rule we (mexicans) usually do not believe that happiness is found in material possessions.

[–]bheklilr 6 points7 points ago

Where I'm from, if you don't have air conditioning, you can die in the summer. Literally. The local government can declare it illegal for the electric company to shut off someone's power if it's above a certain temperature. Those especially at risk are the elderly and the poor with young children. That's why I was so surprised to see a lot of places that were just open air.

And I certainly agree that material possessions are not the best source of happiness.

Heeeey, I'm from Houston too!

[–]bheklilr 1 point2 points ago

Arkansas here, actually, but definitely Houston, too.

[–]Daboo3 1 point2 points ago

That's a great picture --- first thing i noticed was the lack of vehicles ... nothing like US where there are 1 or 2 cars in front of every house.

Looks more like landfill than an ocean.

[–]BrutishElf -1 points0 points ago

This looks like it may be the worst place to live ever.

[–]hawks44 -1 points0 points ago

If we don't close the borders soon that's what California will look like............

[–]Motafication -1 points0 points ago

I live in Los Angeles and parts of the valley already look like the street view. 3rd world country.

[–]Your_Favorite_Poster -4 points-3 points ago

Just imagine how many stray dogs are wandering those streets. Astounding.

[–]Amorougen 1 point2 points ago

They don't stray long! Road kill comes fast!

[–]Pakislav -1 points0 points ago

Is this a real place somewhere? I want google street view of it.

[–]mind_the_gap 3 points4 points ago

Its Mexico City.

[–]bluehiro 0 points1 point ago

And yes, they have google street view for portions of it.
