My friend is now a quadriplegic because she did something similarly dumb. (Drunkenly grabbed the steering wheel while her boyfriend was driving her home. I'm not sure what happened to him or the driver of the truck they hit, but I imagine it wasn't good.)

Well here's a happy story, a 14 year old in my town broke his neck on a 4-wheeler and was paralysed from the neck down and in a coma for 17 days. After coming out of the coma and able for physical therapy, he regained all function and is able to walk and still play baseball when spring comes around.

I have a story like this! In my first term of university there was this guy in all of my classes sitting at the back in a wheelchair, I never talked to him or anything, but I always saw him around the building we both went to class in. After that first term I didn't see much of him at all. Skip to the second term of my second year, I'm in the gym running on the treadmill and some guy on the machine next to me holding onto the sides and walking really slowly. He clearly had a walking problem and was putting himself through some intense physical therapy, so I did my best not to stare. For that entire term almost every time I was in the gym he was there, walking on that treadmill. By the end of the term he wasn't even holding onto the sides anymore, so finally I approached him and congratulated him on his progress and boom, it's the same guy that was in all my classes in first year (I know, huge surprise right). I'm dumbfounded and tell him that what he's done is amazing. He seems pretty shy and embarrassed about the whole thing and tells me he still has a ways to go. Now skip ahead to about a month ago, the start of my 3rd year of university. I'm out for a run on the road that goes around my school's campus and some other runner just shoots in front of me. As he's passing me we make eye contact and he's got the biggest smile on his face, I can't help but stop and laugh as this same guy, who was in a wheelchair only 2 years before, is sprinting past me like I'm a pylon.

Uh when you say someone deserves to get paralyzed, or that you "hope" they get paralyzed for negligence then you're endorsing the idea that the justified punishment for negligence is maiming. My point was it would be horrifying to actually punish people this way, so how can we say it's totally correct and justified if it happens naturally? It's not, it's just as horrifying and tragic.

This is just a non-sequitor. The prospect of punishing people with cruel and excessive methods is not comparable to being glad someone got hurt for doing something stupid and dangerous.

Someone recently fell off a bridge in my town, because he was climbing it for fun. He got exactly what he bargained for, but I'm not exactly claiming we should throw stupid people off bridges.

    Yea. I'm really close with her sister and it is terrifying to hear about what it's doing to their family. They are essentially going to be penniless and will likely have to support her for the rest of her life, and they're all fighting with each other. (Not the girl who's paralyzed, though.) It's just really stressful, and the entire family will have their lives irrevocably altered because of one girl's stupidity. It's not that I don't sympathize, but if anyone deserves it, it's someone who does it to themselves. I guess I'm still pretty angry about it, which might be a tad irrational. I feel bad for being angry, anyway.

    :-(. I hate to say it of a friend, but that is certainly true. She never had the opportunity for a good education, and she was routinely beaten as a child, so she's definitely not very well adjusted. Now that all she really has left is her brain, I'm not sure what she'll do. She's singularly ill-equipped for quadriplegia.

      You know how after you turn you slightly let go of the steering wheel, to let it return straight on its own?

      Well, while I was doing that, in an harpin turn, on a fucking mountain, at night, a friend of mine decided it'd be a good idea to honk. He literally pt his hand on the steering wheel and pushed the centre to activate it.

      Of course this meant that the steering wheel was now locked in place, and that we were now pointing outside of the street.

      I have never been angrier nor have I ever shouted louder. I only later realised how close we got to a tragic end. Sadly this "friend" was no longer close enough to me to punch him in the face real hard.

      A chick did this to me! I'm fine, everyone is fine, luckily. 4 people in my truck (not extended cab, so we were +1 on maximum occupancy), windows down, little to no seatbelts. She grabbed my steering wheel from the 12 o'clock position and pulled it almost to 6 o'clock. We went off into a construction zone, flying through the air over rebar sticking out of the ground and shit (I was going around 45-50). Almost went off a bluff, but I managed to pull it back over to shoulder. Tried to drive and the engine just revved and no motion. Ended up ripping the bottom of my transmission off (or that's what I was told, I don't know much about vehicles). Left the truck there to go to my girlfriend's house. Drank. Her mom called the cops on us...cops were going to issue a warrant for my arrest the next morning for leaving a scene of an accident, but since they found me that night they weren't going to...ended up with no charges or anything, just had to walk to a gas station to get picked up because I was like 50 miles from home.

      Best way to handle this is a quick, sharp punch to the bony part of their wrist. You don't even have to do it hard to make them withdraw their hand and reconsider their decision to do it in the future. Follow with a punch to the face after you regain control if the person is an exceptionally big douche.           I was with a couple of friends in a car, my mate was driving and our crazy friend was in the back.

          He puts his hands over my friend's eyes and says "Guess who!?" My friend is like "Haha, that's pretty funny, man... you can let go now... ahhh, you can let go now!"

          Chances are she'll die he won't. Since he has a seat belt on and won't see the crash coming, he wont brace for it. This is key since a lot more harm will come if someone braces for the crash and a higher chance of dying. Thus why often times drunk drivers will kill the other person hit, but not themselves.

          I know someone whose girlfriend fucking did this to him and the girlfriend died when the car slammed into the back of a semi. On top of that they had both been drinking and as a result of the fatality, the boyfriend was charged with manslaughter and received a 5 year prison sentence and 5 years of probation.

          My friend actually did this to me while we were driving around blazing. Yes, we were at a stop light but still, that isn't cool at all. I was this close to telling him to get the fuck out of my car right then and there (about 8 miles from his house). For some reason he thought it would be funny? Why?? What's funny about that?! What if I freaked the fuck out and accidently hit the gas and blew thru light and got T-Boned or rear ended a car in front of me???
