Solar Flare Up Close (i.imgur.com)

[–]mikebeer 109 points110 points111 points 17 hours ago*
Solar physicist/NASA employee here.
This is a C-class flare from August 31, 2012. This image is captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). It was viewed in the 304 Angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light. This event hit the Earth on September 3rd. Here is the dynamic spectrum of the event as seen by the twin STEREO spacecraft. On the right of the figure, around 20:00 UTC, you can see that this event was pretty powerful (particularly in the direction of the STEREO B (Behind) spacecraft). The features shown are characteristic of a complex type III solar radio burst (the presence of a fast frequency drifting type III and, simultaneously, a slower drifting type II). The STEREO B spacecraft measured Langmuir wave packets at the plasma frequency as a result. I made a close-up figure from STEREO B to illustrate this.
Here is the SDO youtube channel. If you scroll down on the right, this event is the "Magnificent Outburst." There are 3 movies for this particular event: a full disk shot, the close-up, and a composite image.
Wiki link on solar flares for those who are interested.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I will try to remember to check back here, but for now I have to head to a meeting. Sorry about the ramble, I don't get to go into detail about work very often.
Edit: As cynognathus has pointed out below, the event I linked is different from the original gif. Everything I posted pertains to the August 31 event that I am currently studying. I work more with the hard numerical data (particularly with STEREO and Wind) than I do with the images, so I confused the two at first glance. Sorry for any confusion.

I'm kinda late to the party but: How much time would you say elapsed in that video? Or is it in real time?
Also, you have my dream job.
[–]mikebeer 12 points13 points14 points 14 hours ago
This is sped up a bit. The entire event was probably a few hours. If you look at the dynamic spectrum from my first link, you can see that the intensity is decreasing.
These things are BIG and powerful. This one was around the size of 30 Earths side-by-side. The flare put out about 1/6 of the total energy of the sun each second (wiki puts this into perspective by stating that it's about equal to 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT), blowing out at 900 miles/second (1,450 km/s).

Relative to the prominence eruption in the OP gif, from this brief video's description where it shows the 30 Earth images you mention side by side:
The clip was recorded over a period of 90 minutes in 24 second intervals. Per NASA: "This particular eruption was not directed toward Earth. If it were, the material released and its imprinted magnetic field might have triggered a geomagnetic storm, with bright auroras and the potential for disturbance in communications and electrical power networks."

[–]dapendragon 4 points5 points6 points 15 hours ago
One question: is there a live video feed of the sun from one of the observatories around somewhere? Kind of like the linked image but of the whole sun?
[–]mikebeer 3 points4 points5 points 14 hours ago
I'm not sure about a publicly available live feed. Every few minutes there are new video and image updates on the websites for STEREO, Wind, SDO, and SOHO in a variety of wavelengths (and from a variety of angles). You can find recent images and videos of the sun on any of those sites. Many of the sites also have publicly available data, such as the dynamic spectra, solar wind speed, magnetic field, temperature, ion speed, etc, if you're more into that sort of thing.
This is one of the better resources for imagery of solar activity: http://jhelioviewer.org/
The jhelioviewer software allows one to view specific events or to create sequences based upon arbitrary dates and times. While there is a bit of a learning curve and the image resolution at times can be a bit low, this resource is one of the most accessible for the average curious individual.
Edit: For those not wanting to download their software they have a web based version with essentially all of the same functionality: http://helioviewer.org
[–]cynognathus 3 points4 points5 points 13 hours ago
Are you sure it's the August 31, 2012, flare and not the February 24, 2011?
[–]mikebeer 4 points5 points6 points 13 hours ago
You know, I'm not. I saw the gif from my cellphone at lunch. I'm working on a paper for the August 31 event and thought it looked familiar, so I made my post without looking at the original post again. Everything I've said pertains to the August 31 event, though I believe you are right that the original gif is the Feb 24th event. Sorry for any confusion.
[–]Creativation 1 point2 points3 points 9 hours ago*
It is from February 24, 2011. Also this is not a solar flare but a prominence eruption. A solar flare is a sudden brightening on the surface of the sun while a prominence extends in the form of a plume away from the surface. This NASA Goddard page goes into much more detail about this event: http://geeked.gsfc.nasa.gov/?p=5651
Edit: I'm not sure who has downvoted this comment but just to back this up further here is another NASA page that goes into this: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/news/News022411-monsterprom.html
When a rather large M 3.6 class flare occurred near the edge of the Sun on Feb. 24, 2011, it blew out a gorgeous, waving mass of erupting plasma that swirled and twisted for 90 minutes.
Lower on the page is an explanation for what solar prominences are.
[–]eyehate 3 points4 points5 points 10 hours ago
Can I ask some really dumb questions?
What would the surface of the sun feel or look like? Say we were impervious to heat and fire, could we walk on it? Is it solid or is it a rolling surface like water? What about Jovian planets, is there a solid core that would actually be a surface? How much smaller is the surface than the cloud and gas that shroud the planet?
Feel free to disregard those if the explanation is too long or they are just dumb questions.
[–]mikebeer 3 points4 points5 points 9 hours ago
Not really something you could walk on. The visible surface of the sun is the photosphere. The photosphere, made up of protons and electrons, has a particle density a little more than 1/3 the density of air on Earth (at sea-level). You can think of the sun as a bunch of gas that gets denser and denser as you approach its core. It "looks" like there is a tangible surface, but there is not. Imagine flying in a plane over a storm, the opaque cloud below appears to be a solid mass, when in reality it is not. This is basically what you see when looking at the sun.
As for the Jovian planets, they may have a rocky core of heavier elements, but they lack a well-defined solid surface. The heavier elements sink towards the center and are put under immense pressure from the gasses above. This rocky core would not have an appreciable size in comparison to the rest of the planet.
[–]eyehate 2 points3 points4 points 8 hours ago
Awesome!
Thanks for the answers.
[–]MaximumParsimony 2 points3 points4 points 9 hours ago
This. It's an insane question.... But I also want to know if I could pat the sun. If I was fireproof and magically cooled with liquid helium what would happen if I got smacked by a CME? Is it just some hot gas or a fearsome tsunami of plasma that would squash me like a bug?
[–]viralizate 2 points3 points4 points 13 hours ago
Wow! Just wow!
I didn't find the information here so maybe you can answer me.
How far from the sun does the SDO orbit?
What temperature does it have to withhold?
Thanks!!
[–]mikebeer 3 points4 points5 points 13 hours ago
SDO orbits around 1AU (about the same as Earth). It is in an inclined geosynchronous orbit. It basically does a figure 8 above White Sands, New Mexico. You can find the current location of SDO here. We do this so we can have continuous observations and a very high data rate.
Thank you for the answer!!
Ohh I thought is was really close to the sun! On the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do we zoom so much?? Or does it just looks like the image is really close?
[–]mikebeer 3 points4 points5 points 12 hours ago
It really boils down to extremely precise instrumentation. Here is a link to the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument onboard SDO that links to papers giving its specs.
[–]viralizate 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago
Thanks man! I'll take a look, thanks for all the info. Keep up the good work!

I'd love to hear more about what a typical day is like for you at NASA, but I wouldn't even know where to start or what questions to ask. What is your educational background? What do you see for the future of NASA?
[–]Mercury756 0 points1 point2 points 14 hours ago
Can you illustrate how large the flare is in relation to the size of earth?
The flare is ~300,000 kilometers (~186,000 miles) across. This would be roughly 30 Earths side-by-side.
[–]Mercury756 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago
Thanks, that's fricken awesome.
[–]with_an_axe 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago

[–]nalydtnuc 1 point2 points3 points 12 hours ago
Can I get a job with NASA?
[–]mikebeer 7 points8 points9 points 11 hours ago
1) Go through undergrad as a STEM major.
2) Intern as early and often as possible.
3) Go to grad school (if necessary for you career path).
4) ????
5) Hope NASA has enough money to still be around.
[–]NotoriouslyGandalf 1 point2 points3 points 10 hours ago
My girlfriend is going into Aeronautical Engineering at RMC (hopefully) next year. What are her chances with getting into NASA?
[–]mikebeer 2 points3 points4 points 9 hours ago
Simply graduating with a degree won't really help you get a job anywhere. Tons of people graduate with STEM degrees every year. There will always be people from better schools with better grades. A lot of people complain that landing a job is really all about who you know, and this is definitely true. What most people don't consider is that you can be that person by putting your name out there and talking to professors nice and early. Sure it may suck working during the school year and over your summers for little pay (if you're lucky enough to get paid at all), but if you graduate with 4 internships and a 3.0 GPA you'll be picked over someone who didn't have any real research experience and had a 3.8 GPA. People often put off looking for internships until they are further along in their studies, whereas you could be graduating with 4 years of real experience under your belt and possibly even a co-authorship or two.
Internships are not hard to find. The easiest ones to get are through your professors. Summer research with a professor will give you great experience as well as an awesome letter of recommendation for the future. Find a professor who is doing research you find interesting and go talk to them, everyone likes to talk about their research. With any luck you'll make some great networking contacts, get some extremely valuable experience, and be on your way to doing whatever it is you enjoy doing.
[–]NotoriouslyGandalf 1 point2 points3 points 9 hours ago
what did you do for your education to get into NASA
[–]TheVGamer 1 point2 points3 points 10 hours ago
I have a very limited understanding on how these flares erupt so I have a question. Why doesn't it go vertically? What forces the whole thing to bend like that?
[–]mikebeer 1 point2 points3 points 10 hours ago
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares are caused by magnetic reconnection. The plasma ejected is primarily protons and electrons that travel along the open magnetic field lines.
[–]TheVGamer 1 point2 points3 points 9 hours ago
OK, that's what I thought but thanks for the clarification anyway, we need more people like you. :)
[–]LtCthulhu 1 point2 points3 points 4 hours ago

[–]troopah 19 points20 points21 points 21 hours ago

[–]viralizate 14 points15 points16 points 19 hours ago
How do we actually get this kind of footage? is the recreated?
[–]big-o-notation 28 points29 points30 points 19 hours ago
Filters. Filters everywhere.
[–]dexer 10 points11 points12 points 14 hours ago*
The 'light' that we see is actually called electromagnetic radiation(EMR). Every color you see is has a specific wavelength and frequency (frequency is how long it takes for the wave to go up and then down, wavelength is the amount of distance between the top and bottom of the wave). If you were to make a scale out of all the EMR that we know, you would get the electromagnetic spectrum.
That rainbow colored band there, the visible spectrum, is all that we can see with the naked eye. Notice how small of a position it holds on the whole spectrum? The sun emits a whole lot more than just EMR on the visible spectrum. What kind and how much EMR is being emitted by the Sun can tell us a lot about what's going on.
In mikebeer's comment he says that this video is taken using the 304 angstrom wavelength of extreme UV light. 1 angstrom = 10-10 meters so that would mean the wavelength is 0.000000304 meters long (or 304 nanometers, or 3.04*10-7 meters. Right about here). Comparatively, what we can see with the naked eye is from about 390 nanometers to 750 nanometers. To get pictures and videos like this solar flare, we use filters to block out everything but the spectrum that we want. We do this because sometimes things happen that are only visible within a specific range of the EMR.
I wish I had some links to show you where some of our Sun-inspecting probes are in space but I have nothing ready at the moment. Sorry!
[–]viralizate 0 points1 point2 points 13 hours ago
Thanks!!! :)
[–]haldean 15 points16 points17 points 19 hours ago
Any idea what the scale of that is (in either time or space)?
[–]QuantumlyCertain 25 points26 points27 points 16 hours ago
Not from this particular gif, but a while ago I made this rough scale image with the Earth next to a different bigass CME that was once posted here: http://i.imgur.com/DKNVD.jpg

[–]BitsAndBytes 5 points6 points7 points 17 hours ago
Solar flares last about one or two days I think, and here's an image of the sun that shows the size of a solar flare (the bright spot):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Sun_-_August_1%2C_2010.jpg
[–]Creativation 2 points3 points4 points 17 hours ago
As I mentioned in another comment on this thread: this video and its description go into details about this particular solar prominence eruption.
[–]tnoy 0 points1 point2 points 10 hours ago
Not a comparison to the size of the explosion, but if you were to have the sun take up a the entirety of an HDTV (1080 vertical pixels) the size of the Earth, to scale, would be around 10 pixels wide.
[–]LoudestHoward 24 points25 points26 points 20 hours ago

[–]White_Luigi 4 points5 points6 points 14 hours ago
Who knew that solar flares are really just the sun barfing?
[–]ThickTarget 13 points14 points15 points 20 hours ago
The bright spot may be a flare but the ejection of material is not, that is a CME.
[–]matidaou 2 points3 points4 points 20 hours ago
what's a CME?
[–]Friendshipp 11 points12 points13 points 19 hours ago
Coronal mass ejection
[–]Psychomyth -9 points-8 points-7 points 19 hours ago
Coronal Mass Ejection. It happens once every 13 years (I think?) The threat of a large CME is pretty severe, considering that if one bursts at the right time (Which, it hasn't in the past) it could knock out power grids all across the globe, interfere with radio transmissions, etc, etc. The silliest part, is that even though it is a potential threat, we've done very little to prevent it from wreaking havoc on us.
[–]ThickTarget 8 points9 points10 points 19 hours ago
CME's happen every day at solar maximum, there is no pattern to large ones if that's what you meant. A lot of time and money has gone in to protecting power infrastructure and communications in case of a large CME and as a result it would take a very large one to do damage.
[–]notromanbellic 0 points1 point2 points 16 hours ago
What sort of protection does our infrastructure have? Is it similar to EMP hardening?
[–]ThickTarget 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago
Not really. CME's induce large currents along very large conductors such as power lines, normally this could cause components to fail. Risk management with these events involves upgrading older transformers which act a the weak link, having redundant transformers and strangest of all connecting as much equipment to the grid as possible come the geomagnetic storm. More equipment means the surges are divided into more manageable loads. They also need to be tolerant of GPS failure. More can be done by setting out equipment to block Geomagnetically Induced Currents, this is however expensive and can cause issues of it's own.
[–]Cyrius 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago
and strangest of all connecting as much equipment to the grid as possible come the geomagnetic storm. More equipment means the surges are divided into more manageable loads.
Everything I've read has said that protection in worst case scenarios involves disconnecting transformers to prevent overload.

[–]doovidooves 5 points6 points7 points 18 hours ago
Question: How close to real time is that?
[–]Hoser117 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago
I don't think close at all. They're supposed to take 1-2 days last time I heard. I'm also sure that size wise, many earths would be easily engulfed by all that molten goop.
[–]doovidooves 1 point2 points3 points 17 hours ago
In terms of logistical photography, I can't imagine the footage of that flare presented in the gift to take more than a few hours (given the difficulty of taking a time lapse photo of a distant object while the camera itself is located on a rotating body). While flares themselves can last for several days, I am sure that the eruption could be far quicker, but that is just an assumption on my part.
[–]burningrobot 1 point2 points3 points 16 hours ago
The camera could be on a satellite, in which case it could maintain focus. Just speculating, I don't know what was used to take the images.
[–]doovidooves 1 point2 points3 points 16 hours ago
This is true. The coordination would still be difficult, and would have to be taken from a satellite with a fixed orbit.

Thank you very much! This was still going through my head not making any sense...

This is actually not a solar flare but a solar prominence eruption. Here's a video that shows the size of this particular eruption: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=015cnqMt2i8
From this video's description there is a link to NASA Goddard that goes into more detail about this particular prominence eruption: http://geeked.gsfc.nasa.gov/?p=5651
[–]Chezzik 1 point2 points3 points 17 hours ago
...And a "solar prominence eruption" is a CME, which is a term that people are more likely to know.
Really, regardless of what name it goes by, it is spectacular!
[–]Creativation 1 point2 points3 points 17 hours ago
NASA Goddard specifically refers to this as a prominence eruption ("This type of event is called a prominence eruption."). The difference hinges on the manifestation of an eruption in the form of a prominence while CMEs are about solar winds.
[–]Chezzik 1 point2 points3 points 16 hours ago
Thanks for the excellent link. That really should be upvoted to the top :)
The Wikipedia article said that when solar prominences break open, they cause CME's, but it's written for a wider audience, so they probably felt like it wasn't necessary to make the distinction. TIL. Thanks!

This isn't actually a solar flare. This is a personal video of me after a heavy night of fourth mealing.

I'm very surprised that someone hasn't pasted a Brazzers logo on this yet.
