Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It's the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-130), photographed by James Vernacotola. Source.

Next time you want to mis-represent a photograph, try not to choose an award-winning image.

[–]gaoshan 43 points44 points ago

I was just grateful OP didn't title it something like "A photo my friend took last night of a shooting star".

[–]MrUpp07 22 points23 points ago

Agreed, my bullshit detector was at defcon 1.

[–]colonial31 1 point2 points ago

"Snapshot of Felix Baumgartner's record breaking jump" would have been better

[–]Picklwarrior 0 points1 point ago

"He says it's no good, prove him wrong!"

[–]TornadoDaddy 25 points26 points ago

Thank you... It wasn't even that well thought out.. It would take a sizeable object to make that long of a streak, and the streak would be brighter at the higher elevations and the path would appear mostly straight. Not to mention, how would he have known where it would end up to perfectly frame the shot.... Looking at the upvote count, there are too many stupid people for it to matter anyway

[–]brandonchicago 119 points120 points ago

Thanks for clarifying this NeilFraser. You're a good and vigilant redditor. We can't just give karma away to cheaters. BTW, check out this totally original picture I took of my uncle!

[–]tristanisneat 7 points8 points ago

Thanks. Knew it couldn't have been a shooting star. Fantastic image anyway.

[–]a_culther0 12 points13 points ago

5:1 upvote to downvote ratio.. unfortunately most of the silent majority on reddit don't mind being moronic

[–]LeInterwebsFTW 8 points9 points ago

Vote totals are fuzzed for anti spam, so it has both upvotes and downvotes added that don't actually exist.

[–]citizenmira 2 points3 points ago

What's even more insulting is that this pic with similar title was posted not that long ago.

[–]Infinity02 2 points3 points ago

Also, a shooting star looks nothing like this when exposed for a long duration of time.

[–]asshatnowhere 3 points4 points ago

jesus christ. Add that to the fact this has been posted a thousand times before with the SAME FUCKING TITLE. it doesn't even look like a shooting star

[–]Ihavenogoodusername 2 points3 points ago

I looked at the pic and was like hey " that is fucking cool" then was like, lets click comments... FAIL! this pic went from up vote to down vote... thief.

[–]IamTypingWithOneHand 2 points3 points ago

he probably found this image somewhere without context and his best guess is that it was a shooting star.

[–]soyabstemio 1 point2 points ago

Eight year olds, dude.

[–]invalid_password 1 point2 points ago

SS was my first guess too. Bolides are not that even in their brightness.

[–]atc_like_a_boss 1 point2 points ago

Well now I have changed my up vote for him as a down vote for him and an up vote for you. 2 point karma swing!!!

[–]stakkar 202 points203 points ago

That's not a shooting star, that's a spacecraft launch.

[–]havestronaut 33 points34 points ago

It's reflected in a canal in Florida to boot. "Long exposure" on a shooting star wouldn't mean dick. They last for a fraction of a second, whether you're exposing longer or not.

[–]fourvalleys 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't longer exposure bring out the brightness of stars around it, diminishing its appearance anyway?

[–]havestronaut 1 point2 points ago

It wouldn't "diminish" technically, but yes the stars would expose brighter than the shooting star. It would be very dim if even perceptible, I imagine.

[–]biggmclargehuge 4 points5 points ago

That's no moon...

[–]joetromboni 12 points13 points ago

agreed, I've seen it before and it is the space shuttle launch.

I'd rather see Hayley Williams' boobs. Well, go on. That's my wish.

[–]FOOGEE 7 points8 points ago

[–]KingLiberal 4 points5 points ago

Thanks. Next wish: find out who the hell this is. I still get one more, right?

[–]fourvalleys 2 points3 points ago

If you don't, count that one as mine. Yowza!

[–]Roadside 23 points24 points ago

I both love and hate logging in just to down-vote a repost with an erroneous title.

[–]DominicDom 37 points38 points ago

Shooting star? Common sense should tell you that this definitely is not a star. But you should check out /r/exposureporn for all long exposure shots

[–]tillder 15 points16 points ago

Common sense tells us all shooting stars are also not stars.

[–]jmc200 5 points6 points ago

But shooting stars are not stars...? They're meteors/meteoroids.

[–]DominicDom 1 point2 points ago

But what most people think are shooting "stars" would definitely not look like this

[–]HAsash 14 points15 points ago

why didnt you just assume it was a unicorn fart?

[–]TrollingFaggots 6 points7 points ago

OP is a cock sucker.

[–]DadsGettingDumped 10 points11 points ago

Space shuttle launch, not a shooting star.

EDIT: Source http://mechanicalintegrator.com/2010/space-shuttle-mystery/

[–]ultrablastermegatron 2 points3 points ago

that's a famous bridge to shoot from.

[–]ShuggaCheez 9 points10 points ago

How the fuck could this possibly be a shooting star? It's the Endeavor Space Shuttle launch. My god...

[–]costollie 6 points7 points ago

long exposure of a repost

[–]aablmd82 4 points5 points ago

x=-y2

[–]TJ-sylar 2 points3 points ago

Tilt your head.... It looks like cameltoe

[–]Kruse 2 points3 points ago

You mean a shooting space shuttle?

[–]Steve_J0bs 3 points4 points ago

Can somebody please tell me what the dot in place of the vote count means? wtf

[–]DroolingHobo 4 points5 points ago

Vote counts aren't immediately displayed, there's a delay of at least an hour, maybe two. Theoretically, it allows people to initially vote on the merits of the picture without being influenced by other people. In practice, RES makes that point moot.

[–]Steve_J0bs 1 point2 points ago

Wow, never thought of it as a 'vote for it on it's own merits' kind of way. That's awesome. Thank you!

[–]Asliceofpizza 2 points3 points ago

Dumbass

[–]Freis 3 points4 points ago

OP is a faggot.

[–]kinda_cheeky -1 points0 points ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhLrlhFzAjA&sns=em First thing that came to my mind ...

[–]comefirewaterkarma 0 points1 point ago

It looks like a fish!

[–]that_guy183 2 points3 points ago

I was going to say how excellent this was, but the I read the comments

[–]Spavid 1 point2 points ago

Increase your knowledge of the sky and subscribe to /r/Astronomy today! I would also recommend AstronomyCast for your podcast listening needs.

[–]alhart89 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to think of it as Master Chief upon re-entry

[–]OrangeMonkeyee 0 points1 point ago

I don't have a picture, but with the meteor shower the other night I saw a few decent ones burn up. Although I saw what looked like a pair of round grey things hauling ass zip across the sky I still don't know what it was. I'm use to seeing meteors burn up and still see the dark spot cover stars as it goes across the sky, but this was just a new experience for me. any thoughts?

[–]acsmith93 0 points1 point ago

Why did I just look at that while mentally adding the Dreamworks sound effect as background music?

[–]RoyalBlue712 0 points1 point ago

Where was this picture taken?

[–]bbmdc 1 point2 points ago

Nice picture. Even if it's not a shooting star.

[–]frankcblazik 0 points1 point ago

Reminded me of this

[–]diggpthoo 1 point2 points ago

[–]ERMAGHERDRERDERT 1 point2 points ago

All the upvoters clearly have never seen a shooting star... and that a shooting star lasts for at most 3 seconds, and that a long exposure is anywhere from 10-30 seconds... come on reddit!

[–]Yan_Can_Cook_Is_God 1 point2 points ago

Busted!

[–]I_am_Senate 0 points1 point ago

Somehow reminds me to Aerosmith song.... rips ears off

[–]allyourrickroll -1 points0 points ago

I hadn't seen this picture before, so I upvoted. Read comments, the upvote stays because I like the picture, but in my mind I downvoted it so it's okay.

[–]anton645 0 points1 point ago

Now I can make as many wishes as I want!

[–]jonnyo913 -1 points0 points ago

Mass effect anyone?

[–]Soss 1 point2 points ago

Its amazing that there are this many upvotes on a clearly false representation of the picture.

[–]Onixlee37 0 points1 point ago

This is one of them moments... When I wish I could catch a riiiiiiide on that star...

[–]kurosevic 0 points1 point ago

Nice shot, man.

[–]TRI-SARA-TOPS 0 points1 point ago

the second i looked at it i heard the disney music in my head. you know with the castle...i fuckin love disney.

[–]HarryPrickering 1 point2 points ago

Forgive me but... I thought shooting stars went pretty quick, how did you expose them for a long time?

[–]JakexZero 0 points1 point ago

Set this as my background 2 days ago, not sure if to be mad or happy.

[–]Teenageanxt 0 points1 point ago

Dude... This has been my iPod home screen for three months when it was posted last

[–]AJ401 0 points1 point ago

Thats Pretty Fucking Sweet

[–]cralldaddy4 -1 points0 points ago

Oh my, a shooting star! I wish for up votes.

[–]infinitesimal 1 point2 points ago

This photo has been posted on Reddit so many times. Am I not in on some joke that says you HAVE to upvote it every time you see it?

[–]Tridda1 0 points1 point ago

NUCLEAR LAUNCH DETECTED

[–]haddada 0 points1 point ago

High res? I would love to get it as one of my BGs

[–]gmick 1 point2 points ago

You're a karma-whoring idiot, but I'm sure you're a nice person.

[–]mrsplackpack 1 point2 points ago

1/10 reposts make it to the front page i guess

[–]Tstr76 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck could you do a long exposure shot of something that's visible for less than a second?

[–]anzl 0 points1 point ago

Was this used as album artwork for Yellowcard eons ago?

[–]anzl 0 points1 point ago

[–]scudmonger 1 point2 points ago

Its shit like this reddit: Not only is it a repost but it is a horrible misrepresentation of what it is.

[–]SoAwkward_ 1 point2 points ago

I know it's been said... But shooting star... Really? Shooting star? You disgust me.

[–]TheChief117 0 points1 point ago

Almost as if it is a fish of some sort with the moon as its eye.

[–]Lookatme7 0 points1 point ago

Simply amazing.

[–]darahen2004 0 points1 point ago

great shot

[–]eager_badger 0 points1 point ago

They're coming...

[–]Sage_ 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for uploading this hilariously mislabeled picture in stunningly low resolution for us

[–]tinlo[!] 0 points1 point ago

Don't let Neil deGrasse Tyson see how many idiots have upvoted this.

[–]bloonacho 0 points1 point ago

No such thing as a shooting star.

[–]Citisol -1 points0 points ago

As a Floridian: Not sure if shooting star, or space shuttle...

[–]dunnowins -1 points0 points ago

what kind of shooting star gets brighter as it gets closer to the ground?

[–]helium_farts 4 points5 points ago

The kind that's a space shuttle launch.

[–]haiku_robot 1 point2 points ago

what kind of shooting

[–]JSteamedham 0 points1 point ago

How exactly does one catch a long exposure of what should be a fleeting moment?

[–]MrPDubz -2 points-1 points ago

I love how it looks like its landing in the water.

[–]MajorLazy -2 points-1 points ago

If I have learned anything on reddit that is a time-lapse.

[–]eidetic 1 point2 points ago

It would appear you have learned nothing then.

[–]tamifromcali -2 points-1 points ago

Wow, what an awesome picture!

[–]GasManBob -3 points-2 points ago

Wish I could give more than one upvote.

[–]always3lefts -1 points0 points ago

This is one of the greatest photographs I have ever seen.

[–]xsited1 1 point2 points ago

Some people say that's a picture of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, but since that's in LA's California Science Center I know you must be telling the truth. ;)

[–]tomsfoolery -4 points-3 points ago

thats not just any shuttle launch pic, thats my friends shuttle launch pic from florida
